3. Where and what?
Our group chose to work at the Early Childhood Center
in Springdale. We met with Mrs. Angela DeYoung
and Mrs. Audrey Pascual with their preschool class
of three to five year olds. Our group’s main focus for
our project was to ask the teachers what they need
help with in their classroom. We know that teachers
are always busy and hardly have extra time. The
teacher, Mrs. DeYoung, and her assistant, Mrs.
Pascual, said that they would like to do something
that would involve the parents. Our group decided to
make activity bags that the students can rent from
the classroom, and take home and do the activities
with their parents. Since the teachers are too busy
with their class and lesson plan, our group decided
to make the activities ourselves.
4. Why?
We chose to do these activity bags because it
is very important to involve the parents in the
child’s learning process. We felt that by
making these activities, the parents would
become more encouraged to spend time with
their children. Many if not all of the students at
the ECC live on a very low income. They also
may not be getting the quality attention they
need at home. Therefore by making these
activities we hope to increase the time spent
between the parents and their child. Here are
a few of our activities:
5. Activity Bag #1: Albert’s
Alphabet
In this activity the
parents and child
will read the book
together. After
reading or while
reading the students
can use the letters
for letter recognition
and fine motor skills.
6. Activity Bag #2: Count on
Me!
In this activity
bag, the student and
parent will read the
book together. After
reading or while
reading, the
students can use
the materials for
number
recognition, addition
, and subtraction.
7. Activity Bag #3: If You Give a
Moose a Muffin
In this activity the
parents and child
read the book
together and use the
materials to help tell
the story. This
teaches the
students to pay
attention and uses
fine motor skills
8. Activity Bag #4: Dog’s Colorful
Day
In this activity the
family will read the
book together. The
activity that follows
uses skills such as
fine motor, color
recognition, and
sequencing. The child
along with their
parents can color the
spots on the dog as
told in the story or
however the child
likes.
