Anna Quindlen A Quilt Of A Country
In the article "A Quilt of a Country" the author, Anna Quindlen, is trying to say that the United
States is a concept that works despite the fact it shouldn't work. Many others believe that the United
States think that the U.S is the best country in the world and that we're the best, but we have many
flaws. "Children in social studies class and in the news of lynching of blacks, the denial of rights to
women, the murder of gay men." (pg. 4, line 14–16) This shows that many horrible things happen to
people that are considered different then the white people who run and founded the country. When
we are the immigrants here who took the land from other people that have already settled in the land
such as the Native Americans, but it also says how we're still a country who somehow are still
standing on their feet after all these disastrous events that occurred in American history. ... Show

"Today the citizens of the United States have come together once more because of armed conflict
and enemy attack." (pg. 5, line 58–60) On the dreaded day of September 11, 2001 we were attacked
by terrorists in New York. These terrorist targeted the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. They
tried to crash into the White House but they failed. On this day the U.S were as strong as ever, we
were together for those horrible days. No one saw it coming. Almost 3,000 passed away and 6,000
were injured. After this horrible attack the United States changed, we were never the same, but we
were stronger than ever. Also the controversy that is happening in Charlotte, North Carolina there is
unity in the black community where the Black Lives Matter Movement has started after an African
American man was shot dead unarmed by police who abuse their powers, the black community is
coming together and is tired of all the disrespect that their community gets. Hopefully they get what
they deserve after thousands of years of

Anna Quindlen A Quilt Of A Country Summary
1. Anna Quindlen claims in "A Quilt of a Country" that America is special on an unprecedented
front. Written during the tragic aftermath of the World Trade Center September, 11th attack, Anna
Quindlen's story describes the various cultures that America is composed of and suggests that
America would not be as prestigious under different circumstances. 2. Anna Quindlen described
America as being "like the crazy quilts that have been one of its great folk–art forms." As a personal
interpretation of the metaphor, I believe the author claims that America still holds racism and
bigotry however it is all talk and no action. Thus, America in a quirky sense is full of people of all
different walks of life and for that sole reason, America is prospering.

If I'm being completely honest, I didn't read a lot of books out of this textbook. I hardly read at all
this semester. These facts are probably fairly obvious due to my less than satisfactory grades, but
despite the blur of words that are difficult for me to remember, there still are stories that stand out to
me. These stories, such as The Unknown Citizen by W.H. Auden, The Gift by Li–Young Lee, and
One Day, Now Broken in Two by Anna Quindlen have left a huge impact on events that have gone
on in my life. To start off, The Unknown Citizen is more of just a funny interest. Throughout the
story the author is bashing on the government due to giving out citizens social security numbers. He
criticizes that these numbers make us seem less human and more like robots instead of actual people
with interesting lives. He writes as if for an obituary for a dead man, saying that this man had lived a
totally happy and perfect life. Much of this short poem is written in sarcasm, such as the last line
where Auden says "Was he free? Was he happy? The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She wrote it on the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on 9–11, talking about how her son was
born on 9–11 and how many people found this surprising and almost sad. She speaks about how the
country seemed split in two after the day of the attack, and how some people were stuck in the past
and how others completely ignored it instead of being aware of it yet not letting it stand in the way
of them living their lives. My favorite line in the story is "The closest I could come to describing
what I felt was to describe a bowl that had broken in two and was beautifully mended... the crack is
scarcely visible. But I always know it's there" (1396). It's a beautiful metaphor, and this entire essay
that she has written is amazing, and hands down my favorite text in the entire

Your Happiness Affects Everyone Theodore Roosevelt said, "The welfare of each of us is dependent
fundamentally on the welfare of all of us." All of the stories help me form evidence for my claim.
My evidence for my claim is in 9/11 when the family members died there family was sad as well,
but when the family was sad they made the rest of the united states sad as well. When something
bad happens to the world the family gets sad first then the world does because the welfare of all of
us is dependent on the welfare of one of us. So try to be in a good mood every day because when

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Guilt By Anna Quindlen
The United States is looked at by the rest of the world as a country of chances, a place where it
doesn't matter who you are or where you came from. In reality, however, it's quite different. Many
say that America the Great will always be divided. Despite being an improbable idea, it is possible
for the U.S to succeed by seeing the problems with division and clash, and allowing the benefits of
unity to outweigh its own prejudices. In her essay: The Quilt, Anna Quindlen utilizes pathos to
engage her audience and demonstrate to them that no matter how improbable, America can come
together. Quindlen first describes the horrors of the U.S when she writes of "the lynching of blacks,
the denial of rights to women, the murders of gay men" in order

The world can not buy happiness, love, or dignity. People can buy things to look nicer, physically
bigger and stronger, but does it give joy and comfort? In this article Anna Quindlen is saying that
simpler is better and that we can not define that we are grater than others by the items that we bring
into our lives. She is focusing on the danger that we have put the human race in because of the
compulsive need to have the next big trend on the market. She believes that it is better to live a
simpler life that appreciates more than a person who gets what they want when they want it, making
them non appreciative of the world around them. I completely agree with what Anna Quindlen

Black And Blue By Anna Quindlen
The book "Black and Blue" was written by Anna Quindlen. This book was based on a story of a
women named Frannie Benedetto who got married at a young age to a police officer who brutally
abused her. What makes this story even worse is that there was a child involved. The husband never
abused the child, but the child did witness what was going on to his mother as he helplessly heard or
watched the commotion. Frannie after twenty years came to the decision that she had to leave her
abusive husband. Frannie was a nurse and with the connections of the hospital, she met this women
who helped other women that suffered from domestic violence. With the resources of this women,
Frannie was able to successfully escape from her husband and relocate to Florida. Frannie leaves
everything behind in New York and the identity of her and her son completely changes. The success
of the escape does not last for long. Robert, her son was only ten and was not ready for this
transition and he constantly missed his father. Robert eventually contacts the father and because his
father was a police officer, he had the resources to trace the call and find his wife and son. Frannie
survives another brutal attack from her husband, but she loses her son who takes off with the father
and disappears.
What I enjoyed about this book is that it makes me anxious to keep reading. The story picks up
quickly after the first chapter and I am intrigued. My curiosity on what is going to happen next
expands. There are

Anna Quindlen And The Immigration Contribution
Compare and Contrast
Steadily walking the streets of New York, yellow, blurring lights began to blind you, and all you can
see is the people that pass you. You begin to take notice of the people that are a completely different
race then you; wondering are all these people immigrants? Soon you come to a realization that our
whole county is built on immigrants. In the book, "A Quilt of a Country" written by Anna Quindlen
and "The Immigration Contribution" written by former president Kennedy you can start to see all
the differences and similarities that both of the books have.
Both the essays have some very clear similarities. In the essay written by Anna Quindlen called
"The Quilt of a Country", it states that "America is an improbable idea. A mongrel nation built of
ever changing disparate parts, it is held together by a notion, the notion that all men are created
equal, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, in the essay written by Quindlen, she has stated that, "Many of the oft–told stories of
the bigotry. Slavery and sweatshops, the burning of crosses and the ostracism of the other. Children
learn in social–studies class and in the news of the lynching of blacks, the denial of rights to women,
and the murders of gays".(Quindlen pg.14) What Quindlen is saying is that, us kids, learn things in
social–studies class about these stories; of all the negative effects that has caused our nation as a
whole to create conflict between each others differences. On the other hand, "The Immigration
Contribution", written by John F. Kennedy focuses on the positive things that immigrants have done
for us, it doesn't say anything bad. For example, "Similarly, every aspect of the American economy
has profited from the contributions of immigrants." (Kennedy pg.24) As you can see, both if these
essays have differences on what they believe immigrants have done, or how our society has reacted
because of their

Rhetorical Analysis Of Anna Quindlen
In May 23, 1999, Anna Quindlen, an extraordinary American writer gave a commencement speech
at Mount Holyoke College to a group of students, that were graduating. The speech revolved around
on perfection, and making individuals choices around communities . Quindlen believed in constant
improvement for the class for their benefit. She stresses the importance of being themselves and quit
the dreams of being perfect. Her rhetorical language left the meaning of true life on the college
students which allowed it to be precedent for their future lives. Through all her emotional anecdotes,
allusions, imagery, and tropes she inspired the graduating class to stop striving to fit society's
standards. Through her appeals Quindlen believes in making individual decisions for themselves
before they forget who they really are. Anna Quindlen creates imagery through tropes to persuade
the class to think about what their backpack can represent. For example, her use of similes provides
much conscious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to do so she sparks emotion when she links the young class to parenthood as an allusion.
She states "So that another reason that you must give up on being perfect and take hold of being
yourself is because sometime in the distant future, you may want to be parents too. If you can bring
to your children the self that you truly are, as opposed to some amalgam of manners and
mannerisms, expectations and fears that you have acquired as a carapace along the way, you will
give them to, a great gift(298)". Quindlen puts forth a heartwarming experience the class would
possibly be encountered by the students. As she explains, her tone along gets very sympathetic
allowing the students to feel how truly she is giving advice for their possible future kids but for their
life to be honest and real. Although starting with oneself, the students, to actually help their kids be
who they would want to

Anna Quindlen Essay
Rhetorical Analysis
Anna Quindlen describes in the essay "Abortion is too Complex to Feel one Way About" the
different situation that we as a human race are put in everyday. She talks about the topic of abortion
in a way that one feels they have had to make the decision of whether or not a person is pro–choice
or pro–life. She uses references that are of different personal experiences in the essay that are vital
to the audience. Quindlen is writing to state her point that one should never put their self in this
situation because one should take the proper responsibility. In this paper you will read about the
conflict with abortion and what Quindlen thinks about this issue.
The author presents an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Evidence stated in this essay is less than what one would think because when this issue is usually
discussed the writer lets their emotion over run the issue. She uses her family enough to let her
audience know that she has a little credibility with the situation. Asking her husband a question
about what if she accidentally got what would he want her to do? He says "and waste a perfectly
good human being"(628)? He said this being sarcastic and really meaning that even though they
might struggle with having a third child that they would still keep it and love it as much as their
other children. She used her husband to show that the choice is not just for the female but for the
male also.
Her third strategy used is ambiguity. When legally we have the right to say yes but morally, is this
the right decision to make? The right to choose is a choice that she has already made but she
chooses to stay behind both sides of the lines depending on what situation the person is in. Allowing
her audience to choose without her having to drive a certain side into their brains. This choice
should be made before we are put in to this situation before we decide to lye down with that person
or before we even think about that person in a sexual way, but our society today thinks after and not
before. Quindlen lets her audience know that it is not easy raising children even when you think it is
the right situation or the

Quilt Of A Country Anna Quindlen
In this speech I will be talking about whether or not I think that individuals can live together as one
human race. I will use quotes from three passages. Those three passages will be Quilt of a Country
by Anna Quindlen, Once Upon a Time by Nadine Gordimer, and Rituals of Memory by Kimberly
M. Blaeser. All three of these passages have something to do with diversity. In conclusion, I don't
think that individuals can live together as one human race.
In the passage Quilt of a Country by Anna Quindlen, there are many things that allow me to believe
that individuals can't live together as one human race. For example, when Anna Quindlen says, "The
notion that all men are created equal, though everyone knows that most men consider themselves
better than someone", she is giving me a reason to believe that individuals can't live together as one
human race. This helps me to believe that individuals cannot live together as one human race,
because if someone thinks that they are better than someone else, then it will be difficult to not have
conflict in with that person. Therefore, in my opinion, individuals can't live together as one human
race according to Quilt of a Country.
In the passage Once Upon a Time by Nadine Gordimer, there is proof verifying that individuals
cannot live together as one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Blaeser has parts that make me think that individuals can't live together as one human race. For
example, where it says "The innate patterns of ourselves that always keep us returning" which
means that we all have different patterns that separate us from other people. This proves that
individuals cannot live together as one human race, because if everyone is different, then everybody
will have different opinions which will most likely lead to problems and confrontations. Finally, the
passage Rituals of Memory has parts that make me think that individuals can't live together as one

Compare and Contrast of Quindlen and Lutz
Compare and Contrast of Quindlen and Lutz Upon reading and examining two essays, "Life under
the chief doublespeak officer" a narrative by William Lutz and "Homeless", a descriptive by Anna
Quindlen, I firmly believe that Quindlen provides the preferred essay due to the gravity of her
subject, greater personal relevance, and that her material allows the reader to sympathize with the
subject matter. William Lutz's essay addresses the growing trend in Corporate America to disguise
actions with words and or phrases that mask the intention of the company. In Lutz's essay he says,"

her homeless friend Ann. Quindlen's description of the photograph allowed me feel as if I had lost
something, even though there was no physical connection. Lutz addresses a topic that has spread
like an uncontrollable virus fueled by political correctness. However, I question the social relevance
of the topic. Lutz's essay comes off as having a chip on his shoulder and cold disdain for current
trends in corporate communication. Lutz's thoughts, accurate as they are, are nothing more than a
rehashed Andy Rooney editorial. Quindlen however, delicately reminds us of how important a place
to call "home" is. Quindlen eloquently says, "Home is where the heart is. There's no place like it. I
love my home with ferocity totally out of proportion to its appearance or location. I love dumb
things about it: the hot–water heater, the plastic rack you drain dishes in, the roof over my head,
which occasionally leaks. And yet it is precisely those dumb things that make it what it is––a place
of certainty, stability, predictability, privacy, for me and for my family. It is where I live. What more
can you say about a place than that? That is everything." (Quindlen, n.d.) This is how Quindlen
separates her work from Lutz's work; by making her

Theme Of Melting Pot By Anna Quindlen
The short stories, "Melting Pot"(MP) by Anna Quindlen and "Dark They Were and Golden–Eyed"
(DTWAGE) by Ray Bradbury, have similarities and differences based on how they display the
theme of how we relate to a new place depends on our previous experiences. Both MP and
DTWAGE have characters that use their previous experiences to support the theme or a decision. In
"Melting Pot", Quindlen relates back to her experience in New York "[with] a lot of old Italians...yet
somehow [they've] seem to have reached a nice mix [of people]" (Quindlen, par. 3). Anna Quindlen
is using her past experiences in New York to conclude on how the city of New York is like a
"melting pot" where sometimes people come together and sometimes draw apart. Similarly, in
DTWAGE, Mrs. Bittering relates back to her past experience in her old home when she says, "'[The

Mrs. Bittering relates back to how her furniture looked in her home in Boston to decide whether the

singles him out from another group. In MP, Quindlen shows acceptance and connection when she
writes, "I am... a true resident... I am one of them, and one of us" (Quindlen par. 6). Throughout the
story, Anna Quindlen uses her experience from New York to lead up to now where she feels like a

In "Doing Nothing Is Something" by Anna Quindlen, she explains that the children need leisure
time during summer because it can be beneficial for them to use their imagination and ability to
think for themselves. From her own experience, Quindlen points out that this leisure time was
essential to become the person who she is (82). Although Quindlen's argument for children to have
leisure time is reasonable in scope, she fails to recognize the essence of the problem; the lack of
leisure time is the result of today's inflexible work culture which pressures families and children. In
every culture, there should be a moderate balance between work and family. According to Quindlen,
"there is a culture of adult distrust" that sees leisure time as unproductive for children (83).
However, children at this stage of life need flexibility from their parents. Children should be raised
in an environment that encourages good habits, but at the same time, time for leisure. Quindlen says,
"I don't believe you can write poetry, or compose music, or become an actor without downtime, and

Melting Pot Anna Quindlen
Melting Pot or Anti–Melting Pot? Surprisingly, the melting pot is a unclear piece of the American
Identity. The melting pot is an idea about how people (immigrants) all over the world come in one
place and share their different cultures. America is one example of a melting pot since immigrants
all over the world visit, live and share thoughts and ideas to create one big unique culture. While
most Americans are proud of the United States to be a country of big culture, some Americans do
not like the notion of immigrants coming from other countries to live in America. Although many
writers demonstrate that the melting pot exists, some authors show that there are Americans who

These Americans want to keep their culture unmixed with other ethnic groups. For instance, White
Americans once segregated African Americans. Not only are African Americans segregated, but
other races are segregated as well. Daniel Thames, a author from the Washington News states, "But
yet, you witness this persistence of segregation [in all races], the fragmentation, all these fights over
resources, this finger–pointing. You would have to be blind not to see it" (Thames 2). It seems
although there are indeed immigrants from other countries, that actually makes competition for
resources (such as jobs) for Americans harder. Therefore, some Americans are not interested in
seeing another immigrants' culture. In fact, some Americans may dislike immigrants for taking
resources from them. . Metaphorically, this represents Americans trying to put a lid over the melting
pot, so that no races enter the pot. Only white Americans would exist inside the pot. In addition,
Noy's situation is similar to a situation called nativism. Nativism is the political idea where people
born established in a country are more important than immigrants. The atmosphere of Noy's story is
similar to nativism. Noy's classmates and neighbors appeared to be superior and more important.
Nativism was actually common throughout United States history.

Analysis Of Stuff Is Not Salvation Anna Quindlen
Jamie Payne Amber rife Composition 1 In "stuff is not salvation" Anna Quindlen argues that
Americans desire for junk over things they really need. Quindlen wants her readers to understand
that "stuff does not bring salvation" (322). Quindlen starts of her writing by telling us how a worker
died because he was rushed by tons of people that were trying to get all of the discounted goodies
during a Black Friday sale then she talks about how Americans will be a trillion dollars in debt by
2010. She then goes on to talk about how kids want all of the newest items that are advertised on TV
but then in a few months those things will be unappreciated. Well I agree and disagree with the
statement "stuff does not bring salvation" because in my own experience buying some "junk" does
make me happy. Would buying an Xbox one make me happy? Yes it would. Do I need a Xbox one?
No I don't but that doesn't mean you can't buy something that you don't need especially if you
worked hard to buy it. She also doesn't state any facts or surveys from other families that support
this statement. But I also agree with Quindlen because she tells us about her personal experience

Quindlen uses anaphora a few times in her speech when she is talking of "giving up the backpack"
and "setting aside" society's standards. In doing so she is giving off a powerful vibe and sense of
authority while drilling the idea of letting go of expectations into the audience. Quindlen also takes
advantage of her sentence structure and uses many delayed sentences to keep her audience's
attention. For example, she she uses the sentence, "Begin with the most terrifying of all things, a
clean slate." By saving the main point of the sentence for the end she can draw her audience in and
deliver the final statement with their full attention. Even more, Quindlen uses analogies to compare
multiple things in her speech and in doing so can let her audience visualize something complex by
comparing it to something everyone knows. One analogy being the call of normality in society and
individuality to the sound of monotone music and symphonies. Another analogy she uses is the
comparing of society's expectations and regulations to kids coloring outside the lines in the

made me feel very appreciative of my life. Quindlen made me realize how lucky I am to have a roof

don't have what you take for granted, such as a home.
As I began to read this essay, I thought it was going to be more about Ann, her struggles with being
homeless and how it affected her personally. When instead, it talked more about what a home is,
different perspectives on homes, how much homes have changed over the years and the qualities
that make them so special. My favorite part of the essay was when "Home is where the heart is" was

where you were afraid to come back to each day. By this I mean having an abusive parent or spouse.
Some people do everything they can to avoid going home because they are scared. How would that
effect your future and future home decisions? I often asked myself this question throughout reading
this essay. I tried to put myself in other peoples' shoes while I was reading, although it was difficult
at times to do so. The author managed to make me feel happy and grateful, yet sorrow at the same
time. I was thankful that it made me appreciative of having a home to call mine at the end of each
day, but also sad at the fact that many people do not get that same feeling of

Rhetorical Analysis Of Anna Quindlen
In her essay responding to handling of mental issues in America Anna Quindlen employers parents,
educators, and politicians to recognize mental issues in teens as a legitimate medical condition
rather than a character flaw. Qunidlen's use of rhetorical strategies such as tone, bias,
understatement, and concerned diction allows her to demonstrate to her audience that teens such as
Kip Kinkle and Sam Manzie are teens who need support from the array of people surrounding them.
Quindlen utilizes a worried and aggravated tone by showing fury towards those adults who believe
that teenagers have nothing to be depressed about. She mentions that these beliefs are getting in the
way of those troubled teens who actually do need help. She uses also uses diction to create a
concern tone by stating that Kip Kinkel's examination took "less time than it takes to eat a happy
meal". By stating this, it shows her beliefs that his examination was abrupt and unproductive.
Another way Quindlen creates this compassionate tone is by ... Show more content on

While describing the crimes that Kip Kinkel and Sam Manzie committed, Quindlen leaves out a
mass amount of details pertaining to the multiple murders being committed by these two teens.
Quindlen was unsuccessful in mentioning how these crimes were committed or how many people
were injured in the process of committing these crimes. After further research I discovered the
appalling details of the murdering of Kinkel's parents. Further exploration also revealed that Kinkel
injured 25 students on top of killing two students at Thurston High School. As for Manzie's
misconducts, Quindlen failed to mention most of the ghastly details of the murdering of 11– year
old, Eddie Werner. If Qundlen would have included these fine points of the homicides it would have
made her argument ineffective and it would seem as though Quindlen was trying to shield these teen

Essay about Anna Quindlen
The author presents an interesting outlook on a volatile ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With Quindlen being a freshman guidance counselor and witnessing what these girls are
experiencing says this causes her to become pro–choice. Other strategies she used in her essay are
evidence and ambiguity. The evidence she uses in this essay refers to her family and what she went
through having her children. Evidence stated in this essay is less than what one would think because
when this issue is usually discussed the writer lets their emotion over run the issue. She uses her
family enough to let her audience know that she has a little credibility with the situation. Asking her
husband a question about what if she accidentally got what would he want her to do? He says "and
waste a perfectly good human being"(628)? He said this being sarcastic and really meaning that
even though they might struggle with having a third child that they would still keep it and love it as
much as their other children. She used her husband to show that the choice is not just for the female
but for the male also.
Her third strategy used is ambiguity. When legally we have the right to say yes but morally, is this
the right decision to make? The right to choose is a choice that she has already made but she
chooses to stay behind both sides of the lines depending on what situation the person is in. Allowing
her audience to choose without her having to drive a certain side into their

Summary Of Homeless By Anna Quindlen
Interestingly, "Homeless" by Anna Quindlen provides an intimate portrait of the plight of the
homeless starting with a woman's name Ann. The first examination started with a person's name
Ann, a woman who once possessed a home. Notably, Ann carried an assortment of photos of one
house she once resided in. Each photo discloses an important part of her life, particularly striking up
a story. The author begins to now understand the plight of Ann, namely viewing her not as a
caricature produced by society. Furthermore, the underlying motif of the story details how homes
exist only in the heart with a story or history about the place fabricating a sense of uniqueness.
Considering the account, the author reveals the overlaying thought of the homeless,

Out For Summer By Anna Quindlen Summary
Starvation in America?
Do you know what it's like to go through child starvation? In School's Out for Summer by Anna
Quindlen, she addresses the problem of child hunger in America. She believes that the people of
America can make less fortunate people happier by giving back to them. It shouldn't matter who you
are, people should get the same treatment for themselves & their children. No child should have to
wonder if they're going to eat at night. Anna Quindlen wrote this essay to persuade Americans to
help stop the problem of child hunger. In the text Anna Quindlen says, "we Americans like need that
takes place far from home, so we can feel simultaneously self–congratulatory and safe from the
possibility that times could be lurking around the corner." By this quote she means you'll never
know when your going to wake up & go through a struggle of surviving. You'd rather be safe than
sorry because problems occur at any moment. She also states that, "the Agriculture Department
estimated in 1999 that twelve–million children were hungry or at risk of going hungry." Since then,
there's been more children in the U.S. that's going through the same thing. Over the years the stats of
child hunger are going up. More & more kids go hungry daily. However, she wants to have people

right. In America." By this she means people may not have much but, that's when you step in to
make a difference. She believes if everyone helped pitch in, American would be a better place. It
takes more than 1 person to make a change. If someone truly wants change, then they will help &

Whoever We Are Loss Finds Us Anna Quindlen Summary
In "Whoever We Are, Loss Finds us and Defines Us", by Anna Quindlen, she brings forth the
discussion grief's grip on the lives of the living. Wounds of death can heal with the passing of time,
but in this instance, the hurt lives on. Published in New York, New York on June 5, 1994, this is one
of many Quindlen published in the New York Times, centered on death's aftermath. This article,
written in response to the death of Quindlen's sister–in–law, and is focused on an audience who has,
currently is, or will experience death. Quindlen–a columnist for the New York Times and
Newsweek, Pulitzer Prize winner and author–has written six bestselling novels (Every Last One,

The effective use of pathos is the crowning jewel used throughout Quindlen's article. The emotion
portrayed in each testimony gives light and drives the forces of the lasting effects of death and grief.
Mrs. Quindlen's specific examples and hard hitting emotional ties of her own experiences delivers a
fatal blow to the heart strings of the reader. Quindlen conveys, "My great journalistic contribution to
my family is that I write obituaries. First my mother's, 22 years ago, listing her accomplishments:
two daughters, three sons. Then that of my father's second wife, dead of the same disease that killed
his first one." There is more than meets the eye with his statement, carried throughout the article.
Anna Quindlen makes use of repetition in two different occasions, further making her points
stronger and more intense. Repetition as seen in the article in multiple occasions is used describe the
absolute strength of grief. Quindlen uses and repeats the phrase "more than" three times in a row,
each striking harder than the one before. Mrs. Quindlen stating grief's power over us as stated,
"more than sex, more than faith, even more than its usher death", this statement illustrates the power
of grief. Repetition, found in another section of the article, in this instance, one of the examples used
to support the author's position. The repetitious use of the word "loss" gives greater meaning to the
loss of a loved one such as a mother.

Anna Quindlen Vs Amy Cunningham
When defining the word gender from The Oxford Living Dictionary it describes it as "either of the
two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural
differences rather than biological ones" (Gender). Two authors who explain gender are Anna
Quindlen and Amy Cunningham. They both talk about how women have a harder role in society
than men. While Cunningham shows that society depends on women, Quindlen proves a better
perspective of why people do depend on women more. Anna Quindlen offers more comparison
between male vs. female, women's looks vs. feelings, and manly vs. proper.
Amy Cunningham talks about how today's world relies on women's smiles more than men because
they smile more often. She goes on to say how from the beginning females learn to smile more than
males (Cunningham 173). While reading her essay I came across how men say women should smile
more by making comments to them. She tells how a famous male, Oscar Wilde, viewed that "a
woman's face is her work of fiction"(Cunningham 172). With that being said, it goes to show that

meaning (Cunningham 173). This psychologist was named Paul Ekman. While studying the smiles
he discovered that they can show love, fear, confusion, and many more things. Cunningham talks
about how many times in life a woman is judged by how approachable they are by their smiles
(Cunningham 174). In addition to her talking about how women are judged by their smiles, she also
talked about how a friend of hers was pulled aside after class to ask if she was okay because she had
not smiled that day. With that being said, it is known for people to notice when a woman is not
smiling that something is wrong, compared to if a woman was smiling that nothing is wrong. Of
course that is if the smile looked proper or

Sex Ed By Anna Quindlen
Quinden worked at The New York Times. She became a reporter for the New York Post after college
before returning to the Times in 1977. "Sex Ed" by Anna Quindlen in the Wake Tech Reader is an
article that distinguished her as being a feminist. Even though "Sex Ed" was written long ago, it is
as relevant today as then because teens today are not much different from then. In Anna Quindlen's
essay, 'Sex Ed," she expresses that parents and teachers need to come together and talk to teenagers
about sex. In Quindlen's essay she talks about when she was sitting in a clinic in the poorest
neighborhood in New York City. She sat with a group of young teenagers who amazed her with their
knowledge of sexuality. Quindlen talks about someone mentioning the thought that sex education in
school would lower or prevent teen pregnancy, but students will do whatever they want to do. Even
though it is good to teach young teenagers about sex and possible risk of the act, it could create
confusion in students, wondering the class is teaching them about contraceptives or abstinence. The
essay explains how half dozen young teenage girls show off that they are having sex, getting
pregnant, and having babies. (Quindlen uses) Comparison/ Contrast by looking at herself and other

Summary Of Driving To The Funeral By Anna Quindlen
The short story "Driving to the Funeral" by Anna Quindlen discusses about the appropriate age to
start driving. The author starts out by stating that "car crashes are the No. 1 cause of death among 15
to 20–year–olds in this country." Many teenagers start driving at 16 and that is the reason why the
number of car crashes continue to go up for their age group. Quindlen questions why parents of 16–
year–olds allow their kids to start driving right away without giving it much thought. Their
recklessness only leads to missing countless high school memories that last a lifetime. Teenagers
who start driving early are known to break protocols, which is one of the reasons of fatal car
crashes. One protocol is that they are not allowed to carry more

Summary Of The Oklahoma Bombing Memorial Address By Bill...
Bill Clinton wrote the "Oklahoma Bombing Memorial Address" in order to comfort the families
who lost a loved one the night of the bombing. Anna Quindlen wrote "The Quilt of a Country" in
order to send a message to the readers about how they unite specifically. She is saying that how they
unite is similar to a quilt.Even though the "Oklahoma Bombing Memorial Address," by Bill Clinton,
and "A Quilt of a Country," by Anna Quindlen, both emphasize the importance of uniting in time of
tragedy, they differ in that Clinton's address compels the audience to move on from tragedy while
Quindlen's essay appears to stress ironically the importance of embracing tragedy.
"The Quilt of a country" by Anna Quindlen and "Oklahoma Bombing" by Bill Clinton talked about
how they all should unite as a nation. Bill Clinton uses pathos to show sympathy to all those who
lost their lives all though the audience did not lose a loved one they must show them that they are
going to help them get through life even when an accident like the bombing happens. "This terrible
sin took the lives of our American family, innocent children in that building, only because their
parents were trying to be good parents as well as good workers; citizens in the building going about
their daily business; and many there who served the rest of us."He uses that quote in order to make

who lost a loved one. Because they feel

partially because of their ability to unify during times of crisis. In the essay, A Quilt of A

that America can join together in times of distress. In her work, she wrote that violent acts such as

Summary Of Doing Nothing By Anna Quindlen
The authors utilize the rhetorical appeals of ethos and pathos to show their conflicting argument on
if children should be micromanaged. In the first article, Anna Quindlen claims that children
shouldn't have every minute of their lives scheduled because "downtime is where we become
ourselves" and that allows children to grow. Her use of vivid imagery prompts the audience to
empathize with the children. She describes the nostalgia of having "day trips to the beach" and
"pickup games" that are no longer available to today's generation. Quindlen also established herself
as a sincere person since she explains how "'doing nothing' is when human beings actually do their
best thinking", it is that unstructured free time, that allows for children

Starvation of kids
Do you know what it's like to be starving without no food? There's a big problem with kids and not
eating in America, and i'm sure in other places too. School for children is a very important place for
them. Some kids don't get to go home and have a meal or even eat at all. Many school give free food
to kids while they're at school, these programs such as schools or free camps save starving children
that never get to eat. In the story Anna Quindlen points out that getting food stamps for people that
actually need it takes more time then selling weapons. "Stamp application is twelve often
impenetrable pages; a permit to sell weapons is just two." This shows we have a big problem in
America.

In the past few weeks, I have read two essays regarding the immigrant population in the United
States. They both pass along the same meaning, yet they are still quite different in abounding ways.
The two articles that I am exposing are "A Quilt of a Country", by Anna Quindlen, and "The
Immigrant Contribution", by John F. Kennedy. They both converse with the theme in relation to
immigration. To establish ways in which they are similar, we will obviously first take a look at their
theme. I took an excerpt from "A Quilt of a Country", that says, "...the new immigrants are not so
different from our own parents or grandparents." (Quindlen 7). I took a second excerpt from "The
Immigrant Contribution", that stated, "...I discovered that the immigrants ... Show more content on

First off, the pair's tones are very differential. You'll see that Quindlen uses more of a sophisticated
tone and that the words are a little bit lengthy. There is nothing wrong with that, it's just that you can
tell that it may not have been aimed at the younger generation. A quote from Quindlen's paper
explains, "This nation founded on a conundrum, what Mario Cuomo has characterized as as
'community added to individualism.'" (Quindlen 3). Kennedy's piece has more of an informing tone.
In one of his lines, he says, "So, of the fifty–six signers of the Declaration of Independence,
eighteen were of non–English stock...", (Kennedy 3). I was unaware of that basis and I thought that
it was interesting. The following difference is that Quindlen's article seems to focus more on the
immigrant themselves, and Kennedy shows more of the factor of equality that the immigrant has.
Quindlen's quote is expresses, "'The old neighborhood Ma–Pa stores are still around. They are not
Italian or Jewish or Eastern European any more. Ma and Pa are now Korean, Vietnamese, Iraqi,
Jordanian, Latin American.'" (Quindlen 7). Kennedy's quote from his article that shows the prospect
of equality is, "...in a democratic society there should be no inequalities in opportunities or in
freedoms." (Kennedy 16). This is showing us that equality doesn't mean actual equality of persons
or freedoms. It means that we all have the same chance to

Ann's situation. Ann on the other hand did not believe she was homeless and showed Quindlen a

Ann was trying to teach her that no matter where you are in life, you are your own home and that

She makes mention that "by 2010 Americans will be a trillion dollars in the hole on credit–card debt

statements come in the mail. To make correlation with her first point, she goes on to say that "there
is still plenty of need" in America: "For the first time this month, the number of people on food

Quindlen highlights how individuals often obsess over their possessions. I am guilty of wanting

belongings because I moved on to something better. As I get older, I've realized that it's not about
how much I have. It's more about how I utilize what I have. A materialistic person will always want
more. For instance, everyone always talks about what they would purchase if they won the lottery.
In reality, if I were to win, I would be content by helping others financially. Like Quindlen
mentioned, "Stuff does not bring salvation"(379). No one will ever be

Anna Quindlen, Woolf, And Cathy Song
At our inception we are simply biotic matter without any sense of gender. However as we age, our
sense of gender beyond the objective view of our biology reminds us that men are different from
women. Are we truly different entirely from one another, or are the differences in gender brought
about by our social interactions? Drawing on the works of authors of Anna Quindlen, Virginia
Woolf, and Cathy Song, it is apparent that these divides are not rooted in our genetics. Although, on
the surface, they agree that socialization is a cause of gender difference, they convey different
meanings for our expectations concerning gender. Woolf's claim is without an outlet by which
women can escape the gender expectations society expects of them, which reinforces ... Show more

Early on Quindlen writes, "It was wonderful to think of the time when it would no longer be there,
when the school gym would be a great meeting ground in which we would mingle freely, girl and
boy, boy and girl, person to person, all alike" (125). Basically, Quindlen is saying that she wishes
the social spheres of women and men were not there so that both parties could mingle openly. Here
many would probably object that a single kid's party is not that reflective of the gender issues,
however, Quindlen objects that this divide extends to the workforce as she states "I've spent a lot of
time telling myself that men and women are fundamentally alike, mainly in the service of arguing
that women should not only be permitted but be welcomed into a variety of positions and roles only
men occupied" (125). Essentially, she adds further evidence to substantiate the claim that
socialization can cause gender disparity. Moreover, she insists that though socialization brought
about gender differences, it can also shorten the divide between the sexes. Quindlen, herself,
testifies "My elder son has one of his best friends over, and he does not care that she is a girl, and
she does not care that he is a boy" (127). The point is that the younger generation–as cheesy as it
sounds–has the power to mitigate or even destroy the divides that exist among the sexes. Ultimately,
what is at stake here is the future of the way gender will be viewed: perhaps all of society will come
to accept gays, lesbians, and transexsuals; or perhaps women will hold more managerial positions.
All in all, Quindlen's claim gives us a sense that gender the expectations of today can be challenged

Anna Quindlen A Quilt Of A Country

  • 1. Anna Quindlen A Quilt Of A Country In the article "A Quilt of a Country" the author, Anna Quindlen, is trying to say that the United States is a concept that works despite the fact it shouldn't work. Many others believe that the United States think that the U.S is the best country in the world and that we're the best, but we have many flaws. "Children in social studies class and in the news of lynching of blacks, the denial of rights to women, the murder of gay men." (pg. 4, line 14–16) This shows that many horrible things happen to people that are considered different then the white people who run and founded the country. When we are the immigrants here who took the land from other people that have already settled in the land such as the Native Americans, but it also says how we're still a country who somehow are still standing on their feet after all these disastrous events that occurred in American history. ... (pg. 5, line 58–60) On the dreaded day of September 11, 2001 we were attacked by terrorists in New York. These terrorist targeted the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. They tried to crash into the White House but they failed. On this day the U.S were as strong as ever, we were together for those horrible days. No one saw it coming. Almost 3,000 passed away and 6,000 were injured. After this horrible attack the United States changed, we were never the same, but we were stronger than ever. Also the controversy that is happening in Charlotte, North Carolina there is unity in the black community where the Black Lives Matter Movement has started after an African American man was shot dead unarmed by police who abuse their powers, the black community is coming together and is tired of all the disrespect that their community gets. Hopefully they get what they deserve after thousands of years of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Anna Quindlen A Quilt Of A Country Summary 1. Anna Quindlen claims in "A Quilt of a Country" that America is special on an unprecedented front. Written during the tragic aftermath of the World Trade Center September, 11th attack, Anna Quindlen's story describes the various cultures that America is composed of and suggests that America would not be as prestigious under different circumstances. 2. Anna Quindlen described America as being "like the crazy quilts that have been one of its great folk–art forms." As a personal interpretation of the metaphor, I believe the author claims that America still holds racism and bigotry however it is all talk and no action. Thus, America in a quirky sense is full of people of all different walks of life and for that sole reason, America is prospering. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Anna Quindlen If I'm being completely honest, I didn't read a lot of books out of this textbook. I hardly read at all this semester. These facts are probably fairly obvious due to my less than satisfactory grades, but despite the blur of words that are difficult for me to remember, there still are stories that stand out to me. These stories, such as The Unknown Citizen by W.H. Auden, The Gift by Li–Young Lee, and One Day, Now Broken in Two by Anna Quindlen have left a huge impact on events that have gone on in my life. To start off, The Unknown Citizen is more of just a funny interest. Throughout the story the author is bashing on the government due to giving out citizens social security numbers. He criticizes that these numbers make us seem less human and more like robots instead of actual people with interesting lives. He writes as if for an obituary for a dead man, saying that this man had lived a totally happy and perfect life. Much of this short poem is written in sarcasm, such as the last line where Auden says "Was he free? Was he happy? The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She wrote it on the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on 9–11, talking about how her son was born on 9–11 and how many people found this surprising and almost sad. She speaks about how the country seemed split in two after the day of the attack, and how some people were stuck in the past and how others completely ignored it instead of being aware of it yet not letting it stand in the way of them living their lives. My favorite line in the story is "The closest I could come to describing what I felt was to describe a bowl that had broken in two and was beautifully mended... the crack is scarcely visible. But I always know it's there" (1396). It's a beautiful metaphor, and this entire essay that she has written is amazing, and hands down my favorite text in the entire ... • 4. A Quilt Of A Country By Anna Quindlen Your Happiness Affects Everyone Theodore Roosevelt said, "The welfare of each of us is dependent fundamentally on the welfare of all of us." All of the stories help me form evidence for my claim. My evidence for my claim is in 9/11 when the family members died there family was sad as well, but when the family was sad they made the rest of the united states sad as well. When something bad happens to the world the family gets sad first then the world does because the welfare of all of us is dependent on the welfare of one of us. So try to be in a good mood every day because when you aren't you affect everyone. In her essay, "A Quilt of a Country," Anna Quindlen states, "Once these disparate parts were held together by a common enemy, by fault ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Rhetorical Analysis Of The Guilt By Anna Quindlen The United States is looked at by the rest of the world as a country of chances, a place where it doesn't matter who you are or where you came from. In reality, however, it's quite different. Many say that America the Great will always be divided. Despite being an improbable idea, it is possible for the U.S to succeed by seeing the problems with division and clash, and allowing the benefits of unity to outweigh its own prejudices. In her essay: The Quilt, Anna Quindlen utilizes pathos to engage her audience and demonstrate to them that no matter how improbable, America can come together. Quindlen first describes the horrors of the U.S when she writes of "the lynching of blacks, the denial of rights to women, the murders of gay men" in order ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Anna Quindlen Analysis The world can not buy happiness, love, or dignity. People can buy things to look nicer, physically bigger and stronger, but does it give joy and comfort? In this article Anna Quindlen is saying that simpler is better and that we can not define that we are grater than others by the items that we bring into our lives. She is focusing on the danger that we have put the human race in because of the compulsive need to have the next big trend on the market. She believes that it is better to live a simpler life that appreciates more than a person who gets what they want when they want it, making them non appreciative of the world around them. • 7. Black And Blue By Anna Quindlen The book "Black and Blue" was written by Anna Quindlen. This book was based on a story of a women named Frannie Benedetto who got married at a young age to a police officer who brutally abused her. What makes this story even worse is that there was a child involved. The husband never abused the child, but the child did witness what was going on to his mother as he helplessly heard or watched the commotion. Frannie after twenty years came to the decision that she had to leave her abusive husband. Frannie was a nurse and with the connections of the hospital, she met this women who helped other women that suffered from domestic violence. With the resources of this women, Frannie was able to successfully escape from her husband and relocate to Florida. Frannie leaves everything behind in New York and the identity of her and her son completely changes. The success of the escape does not last for long. Robert, her son was only ten and was not ready for this transition and he constantly missed his father. Robert eventually contacts the father and because his father was a police officer, he had the resources to trace the call and find his wife and son. Frannie survives another brutal attack from her husband, but she loses her son who takes off with the father and disappears. What I enjoyed about this book is that it makes me anxious to keep reading. The story picks up quickly after the first chapter and I am intrigued. My curiosity on what is going to happen next expands. There are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Anna Quindlen And The Immigration Contribution Compare and Contrast Steadily walking the streets of New York, yellow, blurring lights began to blind you, and all you can see is the people that pass you. You begin to take notice of the people that are a completely different race then you; wondering are all these people immigrants? Soon you come to a realization that our whole county is built on immigrants. In the book, "A Quilt of a Country" written by Anna Quindlen and "The Immigration Contribution" written by former president Kennedy you can start to see all the differences and similarities that both of the books have. Both the essays have some very clear similarities. In the essay written by Anna Quindlen called "The Quilt of a Country", it states that "America is an improbable idea. On the other hand, "The Immigration Contribution", written by John F. Kennedy focuses on the positive things that immigrants have done for us, it doesn't say anything bad. For example, "Similarly, every aspect of the American economy has profited from the contributions of immigrants." (Kennedy pg.24) As you can see, both if these essays have differences on what they believe immigrants have done, or how our society has reacted because of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Rhetorical Analysis Of Anna Quindlen In May 23, 1999, Anna Quindlen, an extraordinary American writer gave a commencement speech at Mount Holyoke College to a group of students, that were graduating. The speech revolved around on perfection, and making individuals choices around communities . Quindlen believed in constant improvement for the class for their benefit. She stresses the importance of being themselves and quit the dreams of being perfect. Her rhetorical language left the meaning of true life on the college students which allowed it to be precedent for their future lives. Through all her emotional anecdotes, allusions, imagery, and tropes she inspired the graduating class to stop striving to fit society's standards. Through her appeals Quindlen believes in making individual decisions for themselves before they forget who they really are. If you can bring to your children the self that you truly are, as opposed to some amalgam of manners and mannerisms, expectations and fears that you have acquired as a carapace along the way, you will give them to, a great gift(298)". Quindlen puts forth a heartwarming experience the class would possibly be encountered by the students. As she explains, her tone along gets very sympathetic allowing the students to feel how truly she is giving advice for their possible future kids but for their life to be honest and real. • 10. Anna Quindlen Essay Rhetorical Analysis Anna Quindlen describes in the essay "Abortion is too Complex to Feel one Way About" the different situation that we as a human race are put in everyday. She talks about the topic of abortion in a way that one feels they have had to make the decision of whether or not a person is pro–choice or pro–life. She uses references that are of different personal experiences in the essay that are vital to the audience. Quindlen is writing to state her point that one should never put their self in this situation because one should take the proper responsibility. In this paper you will read about the conflict with abortion and what Quindlen thinks about this issue. The author presents an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Evidence stated in this essay is less than what one would think because when this issue is usually discussed the writer lets their emotion over run the issue. She uses her family enough to let her audience know that she has a little credibility with the situation. Asking her husband a question about what if she accidentally got what would he want her to do? He says "and waste a perfectly good human being"(628)? He said this being sarcastic and really meaning that even though they might struggle with having a third child that they would still keep it and love it as much as their other children. She used her husband to show that the choice is not just for the female but for the male also. Her third strategy used is ambiguity. When legally we have the right to say yes but morally, is this the right decision to make? The right to choose is a choice that she has already made but she chooses to stay behind both sides of the lines depending on what situation the person is in. Allowing her audience to choose without her having to drive a certain side into their brains. This choice should be made before we are put in to this situation before we decide to lye down with that person or before we even think about that person in a sexual way, but our society today thinks after and not before. • 12. Quilt Of A Country Anna Quindlen In this speech I will be talking about whether or not I think that individuals can live together as one human race. I will use quotes from three passages. Those three passages will be Quilt of a Country by Anna Quindlen, Once Upon a Time by Nadine Gordimer, and Rituals of Memory by Kimberly M. Blaeser. All three of these passages have something to do with diversity. In conclusion, I don't think that individuals can live together as one human race. In the passage Quilt of a Country by Anna Quindlen, there are many things that allow me to believe that individuals can't live together as one human race. For example, when Anna Quindlen says, "The notion that all men are created equal, though everyone knows that most men consider themselves better than someone", she is giving me a reason to believe that individuals can't live together as one human race. This helps me to believe that individuals cannot live together as one human race, because if someone thinks that they are better than someone else, then it will be difficult to not have conflict in with that person. Therefore, in my opinion, individuals can't live together as one human race according to Quilt of a Country. • 13. Compare and Contrast of Quindlen and Lutz Compare and Contrast of Quindlen and Lutz Upon reading and examining two essays, "Life under the chief doublespeak officer" a narrative by William Lutz and "Homeless", a descriptive by Anna Quindlen, I firmly believe that Quindlen provides the preferred essay due to the gravity of her subject, greater personal relevance, and that her material allows the reader to sympathize with the subject matter. William Lutz's essay addresses the growing trend in Corporate America to disguise actions with words and or phrases that mask the intention of the company. In Lutz's essay he says," With doublespeak, banks don't have "bad loans" or "bad debts"; they have "nonperforming assets" or "nonperforming credits" which are "rolled over" or ... Immediately, as a reader, I felt the emotional weight and connected to Quindlen and her homeless friend Ann. Quindlen's description of the photograph allowed me feel as if I had lost something, even though there was no physical connection. Lutz addresses a topic that has spread like an uncontrollable virus fueled by political correctness. However, I question the social relevance of the topic. Lutz's essay comes off as having a chip on his shoulder and cold disdain for current trends in corporate communication. Lutz's thoughts, accurate as they are, are nothing more than a rehashed Andy Rooney editorial. Quindlen however, delicately reminds us of how important a place to call "home" is. Quindlen eloquently says, "Home is where the heart is. There's no place like it. I love my home with ferocity totally out of proportion to its appearance or location. I love dumb things about it: the hot–water heater, the plastic rack you drain dishes in, the roof over my head, which occasionally leaks. And yet it is precisely those dumb things that make it what it is––a place of certainty, stability, predictability, privacy, for me and for my family. It is where I live. What more can you say about a place than that? That is everything." (Quindlen, n.d.) This is how Quindlen separates her work from Lutz's work; by making her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Theme Of Melting Pot By Anna Quindlen The short stories, "Melting Pot"(MP) by Anna Quindlen and "Dark They Were and Golden–Eyed" (DTWAGE) by Ray Bradbury, have similarities and differences based on how they display the theme of how we relate to a new place depends on our previous experiences. Both MP and DTWAGE have characters that use their previous experiences to support the theme or a decision. In "Melting Pot", Quindlen relates back to her experience in New York "[with] a lot of old Italians...yet somehow [they've] seem to have reached a nice mix [of people]" (Quindlen, par. 3). Anna Quindlen is using her past experiences in New York to conclude on how the city of New York is like a "melting pot" where sometimes people come together and sometimes draw apart. In MP, Quindlen shows acceptance and connection when she writes, "I am... a true resident... I am one of them, and one of us" (Quindlen par. 6). Throughout the story, Anna Quindlen uses her experience from New York to lead up to now where she feels like a true resident because she is accepted for who she is. Anna Quindlen In "Doing Nothing Is Something" by Anna Quindlen, she explains that the children need leisure time during summer because it can be beneficial for them to use their imagination and ability to think for themselves. From her own experience, Quindlen points out that this leisure time was essential to become the person who she is (82). Although Quindlen's argument for children to have leisure time is reasonable in scope, she fails to recognize the essence of the problem; the lack of leisure time is the result of today's inflexible work culture which pressures families and children. In every culture, there should be a moderate balance between work and family. According to Quindlen, "there is a culture of adult distrust" that sees leisure time as unproductive for children (83). However, children at this stage of life need flexibility from their parents. Children should be raised in an environment that encourages good habits, but at the same time, time for leisure. • 18. Melting Pot Anna Quindlen Melting Pot or Anti–Melting Pot? Surprisingly, the melting pot is a unclear piece of the American Identity. The melting pot is an idea about how people (immigrants) all over the world come in one place and share their different cultures. America is one example of a melting pot since immigrants all over the world visit, live and share thoughts and ideas to create one big unique culture. While most Americans are proud of the United States to be a country of big culture, some Americans do not like the notion of immigrants coming from other countries to live in America. You would have to be blind not to see it" (Thames 2). It seems although there are indeed immigrants from other countries, that actually makes competition for resources (such as jobs) for Americans harder. Therefore, some Americans are not interested in seeing another immigrants' culture. In fact, some Americans may dislike immigrants for taking resources from them. . Metaphorically, this represents Americans trying to put a lid over the melting pot, so that no races enter the pot. Only white Americans would exist inside the pot. In addition, Noy's situation is similar to a situation called nativism. Nativism is the political idea where people born established in a country are more important than immigrants. Quindlen starts of her writing by telling us how a worker died because he was rushed by tons of people that were trying to get all of the discounted goodies during a Black Friday sale then she talks about how Americans will be a trillion dollars in debt by 2010. She then goes on to talk about how kids want all of the newest items that are advertised on TV but then in a few months those things will be unappreciated. Well I agree and disagree with the statement "stuff does not bring salvation" because in my own experience buying some "junk" does make me happy. Would buying an Xbox one make me happy? Yes it would. Do I need a Xbox one? No I don't but that doesn't mean you can't buy something that you don't need especially if you worked hard to buy it. Quindlen focuses only a handful of personal experiences, mentioning friends who falter, and small rural farmers in Pennsylvania. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She makes mention that "by 2010 Americans will be a trillion dollars in the hole on credit–card debt alone" (321). She goes on to say that in today's world, people constantly use charge cards to pay for products that may or may not need, without knowing how much they're spending until their statements come in the mail. To make correlation with her first point, she goes on to say that "there is still plenty of need" in America: "For the first time this month, the number of people on food stamps will exceed the 30 million mark" (322). I don't believe that the data mentioned truly supports her argument. In both of these statistics the information is given in a future tense. Analyst and project that Americans will be trillions of dollars in debt. Or that the number of people on food stamps will go over 30 million. But neither is a fact as is yet to be seen as of the date written in the article. It is also important to mention that Quindlen doesn't make any reference to any of the statistics that she uses to support her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Summary Of Stuff Is Not Salvation Anna Quindlen "Stuff Is Not Salvation" by Anna Quindlen is eye–catching because anyone can relate to the essay. Quindlen highlights how individuals often obsess over their possessions. I am guilty of wanting certain items just because it's "popular". Then a few months later, I won't acknowledge my belongings because I moved on to something better. As I get older, I've realized that it's not about how much I have. It's more about how I utilize what I have. A materialistic person will always want more. For instance, everyone always talks about what they would purchase if they won the lottery. In reality, if I were to win, I would be content by helping others financially. Like Quindlen mentioned, "Stuff does not bring salvation"(379). No one will ever be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Anna Quindlen, Woolf, And Cathy Song At our inception we are simply biotic matter without any sense of gender. However as we age, our sense of gender beyond the objective view of our biology reminds us that men are different from women. Are we truly different entirely from one another, or are the differences in gender brought about by our social interactions? Drawing on the works of authors of Anna Quindlen, Virginia Woolf, and Cathy Song, it is apparent that these divides are not rooted in our genetics. Although, on the surface, they agree that socialization is a cause of gender difference, they convey different meanings for our expectations concerning gender. Woolf's claim is without an outlet by which women can escape the gender expectations society expects of them, which reinforces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Early on Quindlen writes, "It was wonderful to think of the time when it would no longer be there, when the school gym would be a great meeting ground in which we would mingle freely, girl and boy, boy and girl, person to person, all alike" (125). Basically, Quindlen is saying that she wishes the social spheres of women and men were not there so that both parties could mingle openly. Here many would probably object that a single kid's party is not that reflective of the gender issues, however, Quindlen objects that this divide extends to the workforce as she states "I've spent a lot of time telling myself that men and women are fundamentally alike, mainly in the service of arguing that women should not only be permitted but be welcomed into a variety of positions and roles only men occupied" (125). Essentially, she adds further evidence to substantiate the claim that socialization can cause gender disparity. Moreover, she insists that though socialization brought about gender differences, it can also shorten the divide between the sexes. Quindlen, herself, testifies "My elder son has one of his best friends over, and he does not care that she is a girl, and she does not care that he is a boy" (127). The point is that the younger generation–as cheesy as it sounds–has the power to mitigate or even destroy the divides that exist among the sexes. Ultimately, what is at stake here is the future of the way gender will be viewed: perhaps all of society will come to accept gays, lesbians, and transexsuals; or perhaps women will hold more managerial positions. All in all, Quindlen's claim gives us a sense that gender the expectations of today can be challenged or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
