Self Reliance By Ralph Waldo Emerson Analysis
Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote "Self–Reliance", a piece that comments on what people should focus on in their lives, and becoming self–reliant.
Self–reliance is the idea of doing things for yourself, focusing on yourself rather than what you're doing for societal reasons. This is an interesting way
to look at one's self identity. When looking at life through a self–reliant individualist view, one can find different perspectives or take a ways from
different literary pieces or when analyzing an individual's actions or motivations. When looking at, "Rip Van Winkle", "William Wilson", "Ministers
Black Veil" and "Wakefield" we can gather a different take away when looking at how the main characters go through different identity crises and how
it correlated to self–reliant individualism, in the ways it all affected the main character and others in the stories. When looking at these four stories, the
main characters go through identity crisis's, that affect themselves as well as other characters who slowly begin thinking about their own self–identity.
In "Rip Van Winkle", the readers learn about a man who goes out into the woods to go hunting, he meets a man by the name of Hudson, who he
drinks with along with a few other people, and he eventually goes to sleep under a tree. He awakes, and twenty years has passed since he left for
hunting, and feel asleep. The main character comes to the realization that all this time has passed, his wife has died, which he seemed to be
indifferent to, and his son and daughter are grown now. He realizes that his whole world, the small and quant town, his family/friends, have all
moved on without him and he's left in his old ways. The town and society itself have changed in big ways, for example, the small inn is now a large
hotel named Yankee, and the Revolutionary War has already happened, so the once small Dutch town is a growing town under George Washington,
where all the people who inhabit it are described as active and concerned citizens, who are more focused on material possessions and change rather
than the desire for stability. Rip Van Winkle is welcomed back and accepted, even though he is seen as a quirky man who is almost blissfully ignorant,
while being completely harmless

Each person possess a series of strengths and weaknesses that compile their persona. After an analysis of my traits and abilities, I conclude I show
strength in cooperating with people, and in communication. When working with other people, I believe everyone has the same potential and
capabilities. I do not rank or judge anybody on the level of their intelligence or additional factors. Each and every person had amazing capabilities, and
that is why I also attempt to listen to everybody's thoughts and ideas, and see through their eyes. For instance, in science class, we were supposed to

In this case, we had communicated with each other as a whole group to pick a general topic and had also continues to work together efficiently
when deciding our experiment. Another example, was during a game of capture the flag in P.E. Along with all of the members of the team I was on,
we had collaborated to create a game plan. We shared ideas and made sure the final play included everybody so no person felt left out.
I believe one of my greatest areas of improvement in both leadership skills and life in general, is in my confidence and self–awareness. Ever since I
was a child, I have not been very outgoing, confident, or definite with my choices. This often creates difficult or uncomfortable situations. For
example, my family has a tradition of dinning at a restaurant as a way of celebrating birthdays. When it was my birthday, I could not choose a
location as I was afraid of upsetting someone with my selection and I was not very sure of my choice in general. This befalls to be an obstacle I
have been aware of for some time now. I have already taken some steps towards improving this skill. One thing I had done, despite not being the

One of the hardest things to do is to figure out who you are as a person. For a long time I thought I knew who I was. My parents taught me to be
selfless and kind despite what others do to me. I lived a life sheltered from the harsh truth that sometimes being kind all the time leaves the door
open for someone to walk all over you. The people that showed me this side of the world were none other than the girls I called my best friends. After
that, I learned a little something about myself and something that I could teach other people. I learned about being confident in myself and that
standing up for yourself makes you a stronger person, Since grade 6, I have been friends with the same people. Being new to the school, I took the

discovered how to defend who I was and who I wanted to be. My journey to the person I am today began, the moment I finally had the courage to
leave them. With that one action, I blossomed into a rose; beautiful and sweet, yet I still had thorns to protect the person I became inside and out. Not
one person pushed me around ever again because I learned to value myself above all

Analysis Of Alice Walker Beauty When The Other Dancer Is...
What would you do if you suddenly become blind in one eye? Would you still act like yourself? Or would you become self–conscious of your
imperfection? This situation occurred in Alice Walker's life. She wrote the short story "Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self" to describe
events that impacted her life. Walker first illustrates her personality when she was younger; she was a cheerful, outgoing girl who wanted to be "the
prettiest" in town. However, when Walker's brother shoots a pellet at her, she goes blind and a scar forms over her eye. She becomes self–conscious
of her appearance and changes into a different person. Her personality goes from being social and friendly to being depressed and reserved. This is
more than... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the short story, Walker writes quotes about what other people say about her speech. She remarks "Oh, isn't she the cutest thing!" frequently floats
my way. "And got so much sense!" they gratefully add." This shows that Walker cares about what other people think of her. It answers why she
becomes insecure when she goes blind: she thinks everyone will make fun of her flaw. Walker becomes so absorbed into what others think of her
that she fails to recognize that they treat her the same. Furthermore, Walker uses parallelism to show readers her main idea of the passage. The
recurring sentence "You did not change" starts out as a general hint to readers that Walker's changes were not apparent to others. However, with each
subsequent "You did not change," it becomes clearer and more obvious that the change in her life was all in her head. If Walker only included one of
these sentences in the story, her intentions of the passage would not be as evident to readers. As Walker concludes the short story, she incorporates
many details and descriptions. This is an effective way to support her purpose of describing how her lifestyle change stemmed from her inner thoughts.
Although there could have been too much information for readers to comprehend, her syntactical choices prevent this from occurring. This is shown
after Walker describes her countless memories. She writes "But mostly, I remember this:" and talks about a meaningful event

I was essentially brought up in a peaceful, suburban neighborhood in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. My household consists of my father, mother, a
younger sister, and me. We originally came from South Korea (except my sister who was born in the U.S.), but we have lived in Oklahoma the longest
(not including my father and mother). In the time we spent in South Korea, including summer vacation, it is always wonderful to meet my relatives
once more. Though I have difficultity in communicating with my extended family, I still have a special connection with them, even though they haven't
been in my life that often. Moreover, my family is able to talk to our distant relatives through phone/face–timing apps. Also, my family attends the

My effort to be the best, especially in school, started in middle school when the teachers would separate the grade based on intelligence. I always
wanted to be in the highest difficulty class because in my eyes, that meant that I was able to show people that just because I may sound different,
doesn't mean I can't be as smart. I made sure I was placed in the accelerated classes even if it was a subject I'm not as strong in. I worked my butt
off in most cases so people couldn't tell that I might be struggling on a certain topic. This persistence of trying to be the best and "faking it till I
made it" taught me that working hard and striving towards a goal can lead to major accomplishments. However, as I've learned only recently,
always taking all the APs and honors classes available without taking into consideration one's strengths or weaknesses will only lead to great
amounts of stress and a sense of failure when you don't meet your expectations. I've come to realize that taking a regents level class or a less
challenging elective doesn't make one anyone dumber than someone who takes all APs. Accelerating in all different parts of school has allowed me
to challenge myself, prove to myself that I'm capable in succeeding, and allowing myself to be seen as normal in the eyes of my classmates. My speech

Family And Self-Perception Of Beauty Analysis
One's family influences self–perception of beauty because of personal insecurities. Our self–perception of beauty are influenced by several different
factors, but one important factor is the influence of family. In the online blog titled,"Body Image:Influence By Your Family" the author, Emily Rosen,
informs the reader why family is a factor of influencing self–perception of beauty. This is evident in the article when Rosen states,"If weight has been a
source of stress for us, we might assume the fault lies in our physical appearance, and believe that if we can only lose a little weight, our family
members will show the love we deserve."(Rosen 7). This notion of losing weight in order to gain our family's love and respect reinforces that fact

In conclusion, the goal essentially is in other to communicate more effectively, you have to be willing to improve your self–esteem. Now that I am

I guess I blamed myself and tried to hide any feminine behaviors and created self–hatred of my inner self.I know I'm weak, and scared of guys, even
though I'm attracted to them. I realized all of my male friends in my life have always been alpha, dominate guys; I seek that out because I feel safer

The other question: then follows:
Why?
I realized I'm weak, unable to care, defend myself. basically, I'm useless, and therefore the only people who'd ever love me is my family. If I act
feminine or accept my gender feelings, they'd desert me and I'd die alone and unloved because I'm such an imperfect person already.
I envisioned my mom, always berating my sisters and me, always telling us, 'why couldn't we act as polite and friendly like her friends' children, be as

As an older individual who has had several jobs in my twenty–five years of working, I have done several self–assessments. I have always felt they were
fairly accurate in describing my personality. I have tried over the years to use these to help myself improve and was successful at my last job as a

tell me I needed to go to school to change myself to be more like her so I could be successful. My relationship with this manager never worked, as I
can't change myself and she never learned how to deal with others who weren't like her. For the most part I agree with all the assessments I took
for this paper. There are some where I see elements on both ends, but I can see where I am stronger on one end and can see why I fell there. On
spheres of control and locus of control I scored differently. While on sphere I scored a sixty, making me high internal, on locus I scored right in the

This is when an infant learns whether or not the world can be trusted. If dependable care is given and the infant's needs are met, the basic virtue of
hope will develop (Engler, 2009). I was adopted in my infancy and given more than adequate care. I personally do not believe that my adoption
caused me any issues until my later years. The second psychosocial stage is autonomy versus shame and doubt, which arises during the second and
third year of life. This stage deals with a toddler's ability to control their body and bodily activities, as well as independence. The basic virtue that

industry versus inferiority, which occurs during ages six to eleven. During this stage children must learn to master skills that they will need to be

Analysis Of `` On Self Respect `` By Joan Didion
Dear I've read a few essays in the past two weeks and learnt a lot. When I put two of those essays together, their different and yet similar ideas have
triggered my new concepts about individual and public. And I would love to share that with you. "We are peculiarly in the thrall to everyone we see,

that to alien from self is to to free us from the expectation of others ,to remain indifferent and to achieve self–respect.Upon reading, I began to wonder
if I am self–respect. Character? Free from expectation ?The ability to face up mistakes ? Maybe not.The article written by Joan Didion, I believe,
serves as a reminder to the rest of us, reminding us of the relationship between individual and public.Always trying to fit in the imagination of others,
people live merely as puppets, controlled by those who tells you what to do. And this, according to Didion, is the person without self–respect. In the
article, Joan Didion mentions the novel The Great Gatsby, which reminds me of another character in this particular novel –Gatsby. Trying to attract
Daisy, Gatsby purchased a magnificent mansion in Long Island, where he made himself a name in society by throwing party every weekend to
everyone. Unfortunately, his affection for Daisy turns into an insatiable ambition for social status and wealth that leads to his ultimate

Hypnosis And Positive Self-Talk Analysis

If you like and are comfortable with who you are, then chances are you do not need to work very hard at becoming a more appealing and charismatic

If you feel satisfied with the person you are now then you are probably one of those people that worked hard to obtain a lovable personality. Common
people who are most comfortable in their own tegument are not the rabble who nose* to improve on or alter their personalities.

What sorts of things should people say to achieve this change in their personalities?
People should begin and end by reinforcing their own worth as human beings. It can be enormously helpful to make a list of all the kind of things you
have said in the past concerning your personalities.
It can also be helpful to include a few compliments on physical appearance as well, since these also make us feel good and project confidence, but
they should not be the focus of the self–talk, as physical attributes can change quite rapidly and should never be the focus of our evaluation of our own

The Presentation Of Self In Everyday Life By Erving...
In Erving Goffman's book, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, he bases his literature and knowledge off of dramatological theories. According
to Goffman, an individual appearing before others is a performer appearing before his or her audience. These performers have many motives to put on
an act enabling the possibility to control their impressions given off in their performance. He then furthers his belief within a given setting, there is no
true self. On the contrary to Goffman's work, Julia Woods explains the westernized view of self that eachindividual has a true inner identity. But, if we

characteristic aiding to an individual's front is manner. Goffman claims this aspect is unstable and can change depending on your mood, but ultimately

Sartre Self Deception Analysis
The last character that Sartre portrays to show self–deception is Estelle Rigault. To commence, Estelle submits herself into self–deception for the
reason that she complies to bad faith. This is shown when Estelle enters the room in hell with the other characters, and is asked why she is in hell.
Sartre himself writes, "'What have you done? I mean, why have they sent you here?' 'That's just it. I haven't a notion, not the foggiest. In fact, I'm
wondering if there hasn't been some ghastly mistake...Isn't it better to think we've got here by mistake?'" (9). Estelle is perfectly acting in bad faith,
for she is lying to herself that she has no knowledge of why she is in hell. She refuses to acknowledge that she is in hell for her actions she made on
earth. This is self–deception for she denies any responsibility for the consequences of her action that led her to hell. According to Sartre, every person
has consciousness, free will, and one is responsible for one's own actions. Unfortunately, Estelle keeps failing at overcoming bad faith by being
asked yet again, for what act she did to be in hell, later in the play. Sartre writes, "'Your turn. What have you done?' 'As I told you, I haven't a notion. I
rack my brain, but it's no use.' 'Right. Then we'll give you a hand. That fellow with the smashed face, who was he?' 'Who––who do you mean?' 'You
know quite well'" (15). Estelle keeps deceiving herself that she has no idea what she has done to be put in hell. However, this exposes that she is
indeed lying to herself, and others, by hesitating to answer them. Estelle is deeply in self–deception, for the fact that even when it is obvious she has
bad faith, she continues to do so anyway. Estelle really knows what she has done to be in hell, but will not take the responsibility for her actions.
Not only does she refuse any responsibility for her fate, but also continues to deny free will. For instance, Sartre agrees when he writes, "'I lost my
parents when I was a kid, and I had my young brother to bring up. We were terribly poor and when an old friend of my people asked me to marry him I
said yes. He was very well off...My brother was a very delicate child and needed all sorts of attention, so really that was the right

Analysis Of Lee 's Speech On Self Identity
Self identity is, perhaps, society 's most important component. It's the element that differentiates each and every individual from a collective group to
create diversity. In a metaphysical sense it answers the question "Who am I?" for each individual. Despite the fact that self identity is one of the
building blocks of the human psyche, it is not permanent nor solid. Decreased social interaction and doubt of one's role in society are two of the most
common cases for a loss of self identity, while life milestones are the leading cause behind the fluidity of identities. Lee's Native Speaker approaches
changes in internal identity through character's interaction with language in society. As I will demonstrate, Ahjumah and Pete Ichibata are cast as the
primary devices to convey these transformations as one is near absent of language and the other is an artist with language. In other words, in Native
Speaker, Chang–Rae Lee uses Ahjumah and Pete Ichibata to elucidate that language is the medium that establishes, destroys, and transcends people's
self identity in society. Ahjumah's lack of interaction with languages leaves her absent of identity symbolizing the loss of self identity. Ahjumah's lack
of interaction with language is made apparent quite early in the novel when Henry begins recounting her description: he says, "she spoke only when it
mattered" or when something "needed to be done, or requested, or acknowledged" (Lee 64). Lee is using Henry–and Ahjumah's lack of

The Evolving Self Analysis
We are cultured to believe that we must continuously be following the rules that have been set before us and we must respect our elders because they
know what is best and we obviously do not. Mihaly Csikszentmihayli, a Hungarian psychologist who graduated from Clarement and the author of "The
Evolving Self", wrote an article which discusses the need to recreate ourselves into the best person that we can be as well as the many struggles that
we face in trying to achieve the perfect self. His essay recognizes our own individual uniqueness as we try to generate some sort of harmony amongst
ourselves. Csikszentmihayli mentions many ideas about both of these factors while Barbara Mellix, who has a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing

She grew up in a family that spoke mostly "Black English", as dubbed by Mellix, and then had to be forced into learning proper English. Black
English is a nonstandard form of English spoken by black people, and tends to be more of slang words, whereas proper English is the standard form
and is spoken by most people: it is what we are taught in schools today. Mellix articulates, "[w]e felt foolish, embarrassed, somehow diminished
because we were ashamed to be our real selves. We were reserved, shy in the presence of those who owned and/or spoke the language" (page 260). In
saying this, Mellix does a great job conveying how she, and others in similar situations, felt having to adjust the way they spoke. She had to change
who she really was to try and fit in and actually be acknowledged for what she knows. Although Mellix faced raced–related challenges throughout her
life, as well as many others, she never completely gave up on who she really was as a person. The new language she spoke would never change
who she really is and where she came from. Mellix, along with others in this world who are constantly facing challenges and being judged based on
the way they speak and other insignificant aspects about them, are aiming toward achieving a "more desirable state of being" to attempt to fit in with
the society as a whole and get where they believe they need to be (Csikszentmihayli page 221). Although most people would believe that they might
lose whom they really are if they try and change themselves, if the right approaches are taken, such as the ones Mellix portrays, one will not lose
oneself. One will simply become a better

overcome changed my perception of the world and my personality. In first grade, I moved from South Korea to the United States, In korea, I was
outgoing and confident. I lived in the countryside where my mother was a nurse practitioner so I always had the best toys and the best resources for my
education. This allowed me to excel in school and gain numerous friends. However, my move to America changed all of that. I did not know a word
in English and barely knew the alphabet. It was such a bleak contrast to my life in Korea as I was belittled for my lacking English skills and inability

After days of sorrow and helplessness, I contemplated quitting everything. However, I then got results that I had been accepted into my second
choice university. I realized that I did have a future, just not the one that I had planned perfectly. I could still become a successful nurse and still help
others by taking a different route. This experience taught me to become flexible I was so used to everything taking place the way I wanted it to that I
forgot that some things are beyond my control. This challenge helped me to realize that there are more paths than one in life. With an optimistic
attitude, I can still succeed and contribute to society. I also learned that my time spent studying and participating in extracurricular activities was not
wasted. The memories that I made from participating in the activities are worth the time and effort. As a result, I came to not regret my spending a
great amount of time toward my education. It still helped me develop into a well–rounded student. I learned that I will continue to face more difficult
challenges in the future as I enter college. However, I will continue to persevere with a positive outlook because the challenges will one day serve as
memorable experiences that I can learn

Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self Analysis
As a teenage girl, I understand and can empathize with the ins and outs of daily stressors, peer pressures and insecurity. The short story "Virgins",
from the novel Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self by Danielle Evans describes the life of the narrator, Erica, as she embarks on her journey into
womanhood. Throughout the short story, it seems evident that she lacks love and highself–esteem. Erica and Jasmine find themselves searching for
acceptance and affection in all the wrong places. "Self–esteem refers to the regard in which an individual holds himself or herself, and it enhances
resilience by motivating behavior" (Gecas 1982; Rosenberg [1965] 1989). Self–esteem effects teens, especially girls in many ways. Some girls have ...

Tupac was a well–known, successful rapper and poet who often talked about violence, sex, drugs, as well as political issues in his music. All of
Tupac's music wasn't "explicit", he told stories that taught lessons, especially to the youth. "But according to researchers at Florida International
University, the more time African American adolescents spent watching the sexualized images in Hip Hop videos, the more likely they were to
engage in sexually risky behavior themselves and endorse it in their peers." (Jackson 2015). Rap music can be effective in either a positive or
negative way, but mostly negative. The content in the music is what appeals to teens and when it appeals they may want to do the things that the
rappers are talking about because they want to relate. Teens eventually start to do what they here in the music, like sex. In my opinion, the story
alluded to Tupac because it had to do with what Erica and Jasmine thought about sex. Music and society influenced them to think that sex is something
that you must engage in to be "cool" or to be a woman. Erica reflects on a time her mother criticized her for following Tupac, "...Keep believing
everything these rap stars tell you. I'm telling you, the minute a man set him up for anything, you run, because he's about to set you up for something."

Add Cake, Subtract Self Esteem Analysis
Once upon a time, women were celebrated for their curves. Weight was a symbol of wealth and fertility in a woman. During this time, women were
subjugated to being a housewife and nothing more. As time and society progressed, a woman's prison became her body and no longer her home.
Women had the freedom to vote, work, play, but could no longer be fat. This new beauty standard of thinness affects women in many ways. In "Add
Cake, Subtract Self Esteem" written by Caroline Knapp, she describes her own personal experience on how this impossible standard affects women's
eating which leads to eating disorders and an unhealthy relationship with food. In "The Beauty Myth" written by Naomi Wolf, she describes the mental

(4) Knapp describes how" the average American woman is bombarded with ads on a daily basis... which shows a controlled appetite, prerequisite
for slenderness, connotes beauty, desirability, and worthiness." (8) The daily reminders from society resonates in a woman's psyche which leads to
anxiety towards hunger. The anxiety that women feel leads to an insatiable desire to be thin no matter the cost because of fear of being fat, and the
negative connotation associated with being fat. "The Beauty Myth" written by Naomi Wolf is an essay written to present how the advancements of
women in social power lead to a societal backlash that lead to a woman's value being equated to her appearance by both sexes. This devaluation of
women has led to a harmful relationship with food and women subjecting themselves to mental and physical torture to be thin. Wolf describes in the
1920s was the first time that women became "preoccupied with dieting and thinness" after receiving the right to vote. In the 1950s, women's curves
were celebrated again because "their minds were occupied in domestic seclusion." According to Wolf, when women were in male spheres, "that

1. One of the first things that I know did not assist me in experiencing success was the fact that I kept avoiding my fears. This made it difficult for
me to put across my thinking clearly in many situations and it prevented me from getting actively involved in discussion where my point of view
might have played an important role. I came to leave particular tasks until the last moments as the deadline was approaching in spite of the fact that
I later observed that I had no problems in completing them effectively. The fact that I sometimes tend to employ too much concentration in
learning ideas instead of understanding them also played a significant role in preventing my academic success in the previous semester. I invested
most of my resources in trying to accumulate as much information as possible. As I was doing this I became unable to actually understand this
information from a practical perspective. My tendency to focus too long on one topic before addressing the next one represented a serious
impediment in making it possible for me to provide all teachings with similar attention. This is another reason why I had problems memorizing key
aspects of last semester and this experience enabled me to devise a more effective learning strategy. 2. I recently acknowledged that I need to read as

Rembrandt Self Portrait Analysis
1.Rembrandt Self Portrait with a Wide–Brimmed Hat 1632
In the Baroque period, artists started to depict themselves as the main subject matter more often. Rembrandt had painted a lot of self–portraits in his
entire life. In his self–portrait did in 1632, Rembrandt is the focus and he is dressed fashionably. Like most of the self–portraits in Baroque, he only
painted his upper body so his face can be seen clearly. At the age of 26,Rembrandt showed a sense of youth and pride in his gaze. The painting is done
in a realistic way which the details of clothing can be seen clearly. Back in the time when camera did not exist, painting is the only way to capture the
world in graphics. Self–portrait is the record of a person's physical appearance. At that period, self–portrait was not only appreciated as art but also a
record of the people and the society.

Analysis Of Why Social Comparison Is Better Than Self-Esteem
comparison is not good if one is just trying to gain a sense of superiority or avoiding challenging himself to do better. In order to be at a comfortable
level of self–esteem one must be able to uplift himself without the influence of others. Also, one's reaction to social comparison can vary depending if
the person feels inferior or superior to the other person. Ergo, depending on one's own perception of self–worth is more reliable because it is always
consistent. Mirroring the concept that self–esteem based off of social comparison is unreliable, Olga Khazan offers another solution for when one's
self–esteem seems to be distorted in the article, "Why Self– Compassion Works Better Than Self– Esteem" (2016). She asserts that self–compassion is
more effective than self–esteem because self–esteem results from a comparison to peers. She instead suggests talking to yourself like you would your

that, in comparison with the general population, the sample were more likely to have lower self–acceptance and self–esteem, and higher levels of

Blackburn and Khazan propose self–compassion. I agree that encompassing both traits is important and believe that a blend of these two work best
instead of one standing alone, or viewing self–esteem as unchangeable. I understand Khazan's perceptive that self–esteem may fail, but we can't rule it
out as if it doesn't exist. Perhaps, the better alternative is to constantly approach one's own self–esteem with gratitude and self–love in the moment

Self–Analysis Paper A self–analysis may be beneficial for a nurse's career. It can lay the foundation of a self–examination that focuses on weaknesses
as much as strengths. The purpose of a self–reflection is to be able to identify areas that need improvement whether on a personal level or professional
level (Pappas, 2010). In a self–analysis, a person may reveal facts about his or her personality and effective or ineffective communication skills. A
self–analysis may also help the nurse identify her or his compatibility and incompatibility with career choices. Understanding my character is
critical to improving my personality to be successful both in life and in my workplace (Pappas, 2010). In this paper, I am going to provide an overview
of my person from personal and professional viewpoints. I will also provide a self–critic of myself as a DON student at Winston Salem State

Narcissism And Self-Esteem: A Thematic Analysis
While some researchers defined narcissism as an inflated form of self–esteem, others argued the two traits were different in their origins, development,
and consequences (Brummelman et al., 2016). In contrast with narcissism, high self–esteem does not include a sense of entitlement, and individuals
with high self–esteem are happy with themselves but do not feel superior to others (Orth & Luciano, 2015). Research has supported the idea many
individuals who are high in narcissism actually have low self–esteem (Brummelman et al., 2016). These individuals see themselves as superior to
others, but they are not actually happy with themselves. In addition, people who are narcissistic often need validation from others in order to feel they

Brummelman, Thomaes, and Sedikides (2015) conducted a systematic review to define narcissism and self–esteem separately and stressed the idea
they are not the same trait. Narcissism was defined as a feeling of superiority over others, while self–esteem was defined as feeling worthy, but not
necessarily better than others (Brummelman et al., 2015). In another study by Campbell, Rudich, and Sedikides (2002) narcissists and high self–esteem
individuals were shown to have positive, yet unique self–views. As supported by other research in the literature, this study found narcissists wished to
be admired, while high self–esteem individuals wished to be popular and well–liked by others (Campbell, Rudich, & Sedikides, 2002). These findings
suggested narcissism was not simply high self–esteem, as the two traits differ in their presentation. Individuals who are narcissistic often have a
preoccupation with self–appearance and vanity, which may be a result of low self–esteem (Lipowska & Lipowski,

Throughout the course of our existence we search for ourselves and what makes us truly happy. It makes sense that when we do not feel happy or
content with ourselves that we find a way to change that. That's where my adventure begins and continues to this day. This entire chapter of my
life has been a battle with family, friends, and myself. I still think that no matter what others think my happiness and love for myself is more
important. There's times I let others opinions go before my mental health, I've always worried what others think. It may be why I still have
problems today with this topic around my parents. The more I grow up the more I realize I don't have to be what everyone else has labeled me as,
I can be myself and be happy. Of course all this had to start somewhere. This can go all the way back to the seventh grade, but the major points in
my life happened in a week's time. Before that awkard and dreadful week I had constant battles with myself on who I was. I couldn't figure out
what was wrong with me and why I couldn't be the daughter my parents wanted me to be. Over a 3 month time span I became extremely depressed
and overall detached from myself. At this time I had given up trying to find the answers among the people I know and like most people my age I
went to the internet to find answers I desperately needed. I felt detached from my body, everything about myself was causing distress and then I
found an umbrella term known as Transgender. Over the course of those 3 months I constantly searched for more information on this term and it
just fit like a puzzle piece. I was in complete denial and didn't know what to do with this information or myself. I didn't think that was me and I was
in a constant state of fear of what others would think. I finally started to get my confidence back as I got closer to this very important week. It felt
like someone lifted the elephant off my chest when I found my answers. I thought to myself, maybe it was time to talk and tell someone I know and
trust. Eventually, I had enough in me to talk to two of my closest friends. It was the first step in trying to be myself and learning to love who I am. It

Oedipus Self Identity Analysis
The implications of self–identity are far ranging. The light we view ourselves in determines the very basics of who we think we are, and what action
we think we should take to fulfill our identity; to make it flourish. Men build these identities on many different foundations. For one man might say he
builds it on the goodness of his heart, another on his career. Yet every foundation, save that of Jesus Christ, has the tendency to crumble and fall apart
beneath us. When the good man realizes he has sinned; when the career of an old man fades away, their identities are no more. Oedipus, the mighty
king of Thebes, is such a man. In Sophocles' Oedipus the King, Oedipus lacked the unshakable identity that can only be found in Christ, and ... Show

The University of Denver published manual in 2012, categorizing how college students view themselves into twelve areas. These twelve can be
simplified into two basic groups: The performance of an individual (Intellectually, athletically, occupationally, or otherwise), and their relationships
with others. Of these two groups, the latter has been more definitive in our society today because media influences have put even greater stress on
those who build their identity on relationships. USA Today conducted a survey in 2014, revealing that almost all the college students they
interviewed have had a fear of being left out that has been generated by social media. Because they have let these relationships define them, they
are constantly placed in a state of potential identity crisis. A relational problem with a group of friends or a partner could lead to a serious
breakdown of how that individual views themselves. Though not as prevalent, the second group of characteristics based on performance can have an
equally severe impact if it is used to build an identity. Any number of events such as a loss of job, physical injury, academic failure, failure to reach a
goal, and old age can all tear that identity down. As we age, our mind and body both deteriorate, and with this change can come a host of physical and
mental shortcomings. As the young adults of our nation construct their self–identity on performance, they also build it on their frail bodies which at

I will start with my strongest characteristic which is respect. I always put respect first when it comes to talking to new people, since it minimizes
the chances of down play. Respect in my opinion is very important to not only me, but as well as to the people that I will be talking to. The simple
saying treat others the way you want to be treated can go a long way in the business field. Though some may argue that to a business person money
speaks louder than words. However, I consider myself a Christian business man; the point being is that I am more in the business to not only help
myself, but to help others. Lastly, I will mention another characteristic that has carried me through life which is conservativism. I believe that being
conservative is the best thing to be. The pros that come from conservativism is having the ability to choose what I want to do with my life. To add, it
allows people to be adventurous with their lives and take chances as well as make mistakes that can teach you great lessons. Freedom being a huge
part of being a conservative with the Laissez–faire approach in my opinion, is the best way to go. For example, if I own a business it is better off if it
can pay for itself and not require loans to keep it running. The same idea can be applied to the United States (U.S.) if the country can support itself

Analysis Of Didion 's ' On Self Respect
In Didion's emotional yet dominant essay, "On Self– Respect," found in Slouching Towards Bethlehem, she defines the true meaning of value to
oneself, while indicating that reactions of weakness and humiliation, based on the approval of bystanders, inhibits true acceptance. Her work was
published in 1968 by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux to an American magazine Vogue, in a time when many intellectual Americans believed they were
standing at the dawn of the Golden Age. The emergence of The Human Potential Movement, in the 1960s, would authorize full use of personal

As a result of this rejection, Didion developed the definition of self–respect that we all accept, one placing the opinion of others above her own. This
personal and vulnerable memory included in the essay marks a point in Didion's life where she encountered an unfair situation and began to struggle
with acceptance of self–respect. Here, Didion dismisses the preconceived notion that she always held full self–respect for herself by labeling herself
inferior to the sorority. Despite Didion's current achievements for the popular Vanity Fair magazine, this personalanecdote shows failure, allowing
Didion to appeal to ethos and pathos. She does not intend for the audience to sympathize for her shame, but to provide a personal example of the
negative impact an ordinary individual can encounter with the incorrect definition of self–respect. Didion also displays credibility by re–evaluating her
own level of self–respect to relate with the audience as they develop this characteristic. Didion uses inclusive pronouns such as, "we" and "our," to
once again highlight that she is relatable to the audience. This allows for construction of Didion's character by displaying credibility by appearance of
standard individual, rather than a famous author and model. Didion's use of ethos allows her to present

counselor does. It is not to say they do not ignore all my input, but at times, they forget about the personal and social issues of the students. There
have ben incidences where they do not allow students to come talk to me because they feel it is a waste of time and they are leaving the class
because they do not want to do classwork. This is preventing me from doing my job and being there for students, but it is also helping me to gain
more self– assurance because I need to advocate for the students, to show I am confident with my counseling abilities and myself. Learning how to
manage situations with confidence is important to me because I am always going to encounter situations, which I need stay strong and act with
confidence. I need to be a strong advocate for students and that starts with my own ability to be able to manage situations. When I was starting off as
an intern if a teacher told me I was doing something wrong and not doing my job correctly I would second guess all the knowledge I learned
throughout my courses. This was limiting deepening my relationships with students. I did not have the confidence to stick to my

Yijia Chen
In the article, "The self in the age of Information," Kenneth Gergen argues that under the information era, technology leads people to lose the "self"
and reflect this lost on the writing. Discussing the same period, Jeremy Rifkin in the chapter "A Postmodern Stage" showed a more positive
perspective about the change.
To support his argument, Gergen elaborates damages in the community and institution that nurtured independentself, the direct erosion to solitary self.
In the pre–modern world, people due to the lack of communication and transportation tools, have fewer opportunities to get in touch with various
people outside. Therefore, people form consistent relationships with others, which derive a strong sense of "being somebody" everyone is familiar
with. However, the advances in communication enable people to move household often and be in contact with a wider range of friends leading to
average weakening bonds with more and fast changing friends. As a result of the decrease in deep relationships, in Gergen's notion, people receive less
sense of identification. Moreover, the multi–voices raised today and the suspicions over speakers' motivations confuse people from faith to distrust.
Other than environmental factors, Gergen addresses the erosion of the essential self directly undermine the intelligibility of the tradition self. People
can't make independent and rational decision because of the conflicting stands they held in the same time and if

Self-Analysis
Self–Analysis The first section of this paper will contain a self–analysis utilizing self–assessments, class discussions, assignments, and the assigned
reading materials. The self–analysis portion of this paper will contain several important topics that we discussed during class along with my
assessment of how I view myself with respect to these topics with the goal of identifying the deficiencies and gaps that I see. The action–plan portion
of this assignment will contain the framework for turning the deficiencies that I have identified into strengths through constant practice and patience on
my journey to level three leadership. The self–analysis portion will hope to determine the "why" I did not get the manager position currently available...

Growing up in a Christian household, my brothers and I were always taught the golden rule; "treat people as you would like to be treated," as well as
learning the value and benefit that comes from always telling the truth, no matter what the consequences are. I have certainly maintained, to this day,
a great deal of the values and beliefs that were instilled in me at a young age. The values I learned during upbringing has surely served me well and
have been instrumental in shaping the person I am today. However, several life experiences have also proved effective in molding beliefs in me that
are less desirable characteristics, in which I struggle with to change. One of my biggest gaps lies in the ability to truly trust people and their motives. A
comment from my manager on my last personal development plan stated that I need to be more trusting of team members and people in the
organization. More often that not, I find life experiences reaffirming my hesitance to fully trust people, which, in turn, makes it harder for me to change
this undesirable

Self Reliance By Ralph Waldo Emerson Analysis

  • 1. Self Reliance By Ralph Waldo Emerson Analysis Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote "Self–Reliance", a piece that comments on what people should focus on in their lives, and becoming self–reliant. Self–reliance is the idea of doing things for yourself, focusing on yourself rather than what you're doing for societal reasons. This is an interesting way to look at one's self identity. When looking at life through a self–reliant individualist view, one can find different perspectives or take a ways from different literary pieces or when analyzing an individual's actions or motivations. When looking at, "Rip Van Winkle", "William Wilson", "Ministers Black Veil" and "Wakefield" we can gather a different take away when looking at how the main characters go through different identity crises and how it correlated to self–reliant individualism, in the ways it all affected the main character and others in the stories. When looking at these four stories, the main characters go through identity crisis's, that affect themselves as well as other characters who slowly begin thinking about their own self–identity. In "Rip Van Winkle", the readers learn about a man who goes out into the woods to go hunting, he meets a man by the name of Hudson, who he drinks with along with a few other people, and he eventually goes to sleep under a tree. He awakes, and twenty years has passed since he left for hunting, and feel asleep. The main character comes to the realization that all this time has passed, his wife has died, which he seemed to be indifferent to, and his son and daughter are grown now. He realizes that his whole world, the small and quant town, his family/friends, have all moved on without him and he's left in his old ways. The town and society itself have changed in big ways, for example, the small inn is now a large hotel named Yankee, and the Revolutionary War has already happened, so the once small Dutch town is a growing town under George Washington, where all the people who inhabit it are described as active and concerned citizens, who are more focused on material possessions and change rather than the desire for stability. Rip Van Winkle is welcomed back and accepted, even though he is seen as a quirky man who is almost blissfully ignorant, while being completely harmless ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Self Analysis Each person possess a series of strengths and weaknesses that compile their persona. After an analysis of my traits and abilities, I conclude I show strength in cooperating with people, and in communication. When working with other people, I believe everyone has the same potential and capabilities. I do not rank or judge anybody on the level of their intelligence or additional factors. Each and every person had amazing capabilities, and that is why I also attempt to listen to everybody's thoughts and ideas, and see through their eyes. For instance, in science class, we were supposed to get into groups of five and create an experiment. To come up with an experiment, my group had decided to pick a topic we all found interesting and to formulate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this case, we had communicated with each other as a whole group to pick a general topic and had also continues to work together efficiently when deciding our experiment. Another example, was during a game of capture the flag in P.E. Along with all of the members of the team I was on, we had collaborated to create a game plan. We shared ideas and made sure the final play included everybody so no person felt left out. I believe one of my greatest areas of improvement in both leadership skills and life in general, is in my confidence and self–awareness. Ever since I was a child, I have not been very outgoing, confident, or definite with my choices. This often creates difficult or uncomfortable situations. For example, my family has a tradition of dinning at a restaurant as a way of celebrating birthdays. When it was my birthday, I could not choose a location as I was afraid of upsetting someone with my selection and I was not very sure of my choice in general. This befalls to be an obstacle I have been aware of for some time now. I have already taken some steps towards improving this skill. One thing I had done, despite not being the ... • 3. Self Analysis One of the hardest things to do is to figure out who you are as a person. For a long time I thought I knew who I was. My parents taught me to be selfless and kind despite what others do to me. I lived a life sheltered from the harsh truth that sometimes being kind all the time leaves the door open for someone to walk all over you. The people that showed me this side of the world were none other than the girls I called my best friends. After that, I learned a little something about myself and something that I could teach other people. I learned about being confident in myself and that standing up for yourself makes you a stronger person, Since grade 6, I have been friends with the same people. Being new to the school, I took the opportunity... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With her support, along with the support of the rest of my family, in grade 10, I found the strength to fight back. The lamb became a lion and I discovered how to defend who I was and who I wanted to be. My journey to the person I am today began, the moment I finally had the courage to leave them. With that one action, I blossomed into a rose; beautiful and sweet, yet I still had thorns to protect the person I became inside and out. Not one person pushed me around ever again because I learned to value myself above all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis Of Alice Walker Beauty When The Other Dancer Is... What would you do if you suddenly become blind in one eye? Would you still act like yourself? Or would you become self–conscious of your imperfection? This situation occurred in Alice Walker's life. She wrote the short story "Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self" to describe events that impacted her life. Walker first illustrates her personality when she was younger; she was a cheerful, outgoing girl who wanted to be "the prettiest" in town. However, when Walker's brother shoots a pellet at her, she goes blind and a scar forms over her eye. She becomes self–conscious of her appearance and changes into a different person. Her personality goes from being social and friendly to being depressed and reserved. This is more than... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the short story, Walker writes quotes about what other people say about her speech. She remarks "Oh, isn't she the cutest thing!" frequently floats my way. "And got so much sense!" they gratefully add." This shows that Walker cares about what other people think of her. It answers why she becomes insecure when she goes blind: she thinks everyone will make fun of her flaw. Walker becomes so absorbed into what others think of her that she fails to recognize that they treat her the same. Furthermore, Walker uses parallelism to show readers her main idea of the passage. The recurring sentence "You did not change" starts out as a general hint to readers that Walker's changes were not apparent to others. However, with each subsequent "You did not change," it becomes clearer and more obvious that the change in her life was all in her head. If Walker only included one of these sentences in the story, her intentions of the passage would not be as evident to readers. As Walker concludes the short story, she incorporates many details and descriptions. This is an effective way to support her purpose of describing how her lifestyle change stemmed from her inner thoughts. Although there could have been too much information for readers to comprehend, her syntactical choices prevent this from occurring. This is shown after Walker describes her countless memories. She writes "But mostly, I remember this:" and talks about a meaningful event ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Self Analysis I was essentially brought up in a peaceful, suburban neighborhood in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. My household consists of my father, mother, a younger sister, and me. We originally came from South Korea (except my sister who was born in the U.S.), but we have lived in Oklahoma the longest (not including my father and mother). In the time we spent in South Korea, including summer vacation, it is always wonderful to meet my relatives once more. Though I have difficultity in communicating with my extended family, I still have a special connection with them, even though they haven't been in my life that often. Moreover, my family is able to talk to our distant relatives through phone/face–timing apps. Also, my family attends the Church of St. Benedict where I was taught my basis of morals. I was raised in my family from my early childhood, and understand how my faith can help me through difficult challenges as well. There were always times where I didn't believe that I would succeed, but I often pull through, with multiple lessons learned here and there. Moreover, it is primarily due to my family, especially my parents, who shaped my life. Throughout my life, there have been the modest family squabbles, but there is nobody else in the world that I completely trust my well–being and life to besides my family. Afterall, they had the most impact on my life and done so much for me, even during times where I become very disagreeable. • 6. Self Analysis I spent most of my childhood in front of a two–way mirror tied down with microphones and bombarded with tedious questions. I made sure I was placed in the accelerated classes even if it was a subject I'm not as strong in. I worked my butt off in most cases so people couldn't tell that I might be struggling on a certain topic. This persistence of trying to be the best and "faking it till I made it" taught me that working hard and striving towards a goal can lead to major accomplishments. However, as I've learned only recently, always taking all the APs and honors classes available without taking into consideration one's strengths or weaknesses will only lead to great amounts of stress and a sense of failure when you don't meet your expectations. I've come to realize that taking a regents level class or a less challenging elective doesn't make one anyone dumber than someone who takes all APs. Our self–perception of beauty are influenced by several different factors, but one important factor is the influence of family. In the online blog titled,"Body Image:Influence By Your Family" the author, Emily Rosen, informs the reader why family is a factor of influencing self–perception of beauty. This is evident in the article when Rosen states,"If weight has been a source of stress for us, we might assume the fault lies in our physical appearance, and believe that if we can only lose a little weight, our family members will show the love we deserve."(Rosen 7). • 16. The Presentation Of Self In Everyday Life By Erving... In Erving Goffman's book, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, he bases his literature and knowledge off of dramatological theories. According to Goffman, an individual appearing before others is a performer appearing before his or her audience. These performers have many motives to put on an act enabling the possibility to control their impressions given off in their performance. He then furthers his belief within a given setting, there is no true self. On the contrary to Goffman's work, Julia Woods explains the westernized view of self that eachindividual has a true inner identity. During the analyzed performance between Anthony and Sandy, both of them are focused on maintaining their identity, through their appearance, manner, and setting. What we use through personal decoration is known as appearance. Goffman explains this characteristic as stable and unchanging for a person's identity. For instance, while Sandy is speaking so highly of just receiving her Real Estate License she is wearing an elegant woman's business suit, carrying an affluent designer bag. Based off of her appearance she is displaying a self–made successful woman front. The next physical characteristic aiding to an individual's front is manner. Goffman claims this aspect is unstable and can change depending on your mood, but ultimately is how the person says or does things. Proceeding to carry herself in such an egocentric manner, Sandy's conceited attitude indicates her front as a know it all because she continuously monopolizes every conversation back to herself. Sandy truly believes she has the right advice for every detail Anthony brings to her attention. Anthony's manner on the other hand, is more of the opposite. From his point of view, he has a good prediction for what his mother is going to say based off of her mannerisms and signals given and given off, explaining why he is short and subtle to his mother's statements. • 17. Sartre Self Deception Analysis The last character that Sartre portrays to show self–deception is Estelle Rigault. To commence, Estelle submits herself into self–deception for the reason that she complies to bad faith. This is shown when Estelle enters the room in hell with the other characters, and is asked why she is in hell. Sartre himself writes, "'What have you done? I mean, why have they sent you here?' 'That's just it. I haven't a notion, not the foggiest. In fact, I'm wondering if there hasn't been some ghastly mistake...Isn't it better to think we've got here by mistake?'" (9). Estelle is perfectly acting in bad faith, for she is lying to herself that she has no knowledge of why she is in hell. She refuses to acknowledge that she is in hell for her actions she made on earth. This is self–deception for she denies any responsibility for the consequences of her action that led her to hell. According to Sartre, every person has consciousness, free will, and one is responsible for one's own actions. Unfortunately, Estelle keeps failing at overcoming bad faith by being asked yet again, for what act she did to be in hell, later in the play. Sartre writes, "'Your turn. What have you done?' 'As I told you, I haven't a notion. I rack my brain, but it's no use.' 'Right. Then we'll give you a hand. That fellow with the smashed face, who was he?' 'Who––who do you mean?' 'You know quite well'" (15). Estelle keeps deceiving herself that she has no idea what she has done to be put in hell. However, this exposes that she is indeed lying to herself, and others, by hesitating to answer them. Estelle is deeply in self–deception, for the fact that even when it is obvious she has bad faith, she continues to do so anyway. Estelle really knows what she has done to be in hell, but will not take the responsibility for her actions. Not only does she refuse any responsibility for her fate, but also continues to deny free will. For instance, Sartre agrees when he writes, "'I lost my parents when I was a kid, and I had my young brother to bring up. • 18. Analysis Of Lee 's Speech On Self Identity Self identity is, perhaps, society 's most important component. It's the element that differentiates each and every individual from a collective group to create diversity. In a metaphysical sense it answers the question "Who am I?" for each individual. Despite the fact that self identity is one of the building blocks of the human psyche, it is not permanent nor solid. Decreased social interaction and doubt of one's role in society are two of the most common cases for a loss of self identity, while life milestones are the leading cause behind the fluidity of identities. Lee's Native Speaker approaches changes in internal identity through character's interaction with language in society. As I will demonstrate, Ahjumah and Pete Ichibata are cast as the primary devices to convey these transformations as one is near absent of language and the other is an artist with language. In other words, in Native Speaker, Chang–Rae Lee uses Ahjumah and Pete Ichibata to elucidate that language is the medium that establishes, destroys, and transcends people's self identity in society. Ahjumah's lack of interaction with languages leaves her absent of identity symbolizing the loss of self identity. Ahjumah's lack of interaction with language is made apparent quite early in the novel when Henry begins recounting her description: he says, "she spoke only when it mattered" or when something "needed to be done, or requested, or acknowledged" (Lee 64). Black English is a nonstandard form of English spoken by black people, and tends to be more of slang words, whereas proper English is the standard form and is spoken by most people: it is what we are taught in schools today. Mellix articulates, "[w]e felt foolish, embarrassed, somehow diminished because we were ashamed to be our real selves. We were reserved, shy in the presence of those who owned and/or spoke the language" (page 260). In saying this, Mellix does a great job conveying how she, and others in similar situations, felt having to adjust the way they spoke. She had to change who she really was to try and fit in and actually be acknowledged for what she knows. Although Mellix faced raced–related challenges throughout her life, as well as many others, she never completely gave up on who she really was as a person. The new language she spoke would never change who she really is and where she came from. Mellix, along with others in this world who are constantly facing challenges and being judged based on the way they speak and other insignificant aspects about them, are aiming toward achieving a "more desirable state of being" to attempt to fit in with the society as a whole and get where they believe they need to be (Csikszentmihayli page 221). • 28. Analysis Of Why Social Comparison Is Better Than Self-Esteem comparison is not good if one is just trying to gain a sense of superiority or avoiding challenging himself to do better. In order to be at a comfortable level of self–esteem one must be able to uplift himself without the influence of others. Also, one's reaction to social comparison can vary depending if the person feels inferior or superior to the other person. Ergo, depending on one's own perception of self–worth is more reliable because it is always consistent. Mirroring the concept that self–esteem based off of social comparison is unreliable, Olga Khazan offers another solution for when one's self–esteem seems to be distorted in the article, "Why Self– Compassion Works Better Than Self– Esteem" (2016). She asserts that self–compassion is more effective than self–esteem because self–esteem results from a comparison to peers. She instead suggests talking to yourself like you would your best ... As a solution to the negative impact of low self–esteem, Hamblin recommends gratitude while Blackburn and Khazan propose self–compassion. I agree that encompassing both traits is important and believe that a blend of these two work best instead of one standing alone, or viewing self–esteem as unchangeable. It can lay the foundation of a self–examination that focuses on weaknesses as much as strengths. The purpose of a self–reflection is to be able to identify areas that need improvement whether on a personal level or professional level (Pappas, 2010). In a self–analysis, a person may reveal facts about his or her personality and effective or ineffective communication skills. A self–analysis may also help the nurse identify her or his compatibility and incompatibility with career choices. Understanding my character is critical to improving my personality to be successful both in life and in my workplace (Pappas, 2010). In this paper, I am going to provide an overview of my person from personal and professional viewpoints. I will also provide a self–critic of myself as a DON student at Winston Salem State University. Next, I will reflect on my experience in the program, what I have learned, and my overall impression. Finally, I will reflect upon the University's vision, mission, and motto. I will also discuss my future aspirations. • 30. Narcissism And Self-Esteem: A Thematic Analysis While some researchers defined narcissism as an inflated form of self–esteem, others argued the two traits were different in their origins, development, and consequences (Brummelman et al., 2016). In contrast with narcissism, high self–esteem does not include a sense of entitlement, and individuals with high self–esteem are happy with themselves but do not feel superior to others (Orth & Luciano, 2015). Research has supported the idea many individuals who are high in narcissism actually have low self–esteem (Brummelman et al., 2016). Brummelman, Thomaes, and Sedikides (2015) conducted a systematic review to define narcissism and self–esteem separately and stressed the idea they are not the same trait. In another study by Campbell, Rudich, and Sedikides (2002) narcissists and high self–esteem individuals were shown to have positive, yet unique self–views. As supported by other research in the literature, this study found narcissists wished to be admired, while high self–esteem individuals wished to be popular and well–liked by others (Campbell, Rudich, & Sedikides, 2002). • 32. Self Analysis Throughout the course of our existence we search for ourselves and what makes us truly happy. It makes sense that when we do not feel happy or content with ourselves that we find a way to change that. That's where my adventure begins and continues to this day. This entire chapter of my life has been a battle with family, friends, and myself. I still think that no matter what others think my happiness and love for myself is more important. There's times I let others opinions go before my mental health, I've always worried what others think. It may be why I still have problems today with this topic around my parents. The more I grow up the more I realize I don't have to be what everyone else has labeled me as, I can be myself and be happy. Of course all this had to start somewhere. This can go all the way back to the seventh grade, but the major points in my life happened in a week's time. Before that awkard and dreadful week I had constant battles with myself on who I was. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me and why I couldn't be the daughter my parents wanted me to be. Over a 3 month time span I became extremely depressed and overall detached from myself. At this time I had given up trying to find the answers among the people I know and like most people my age I went to the internet to find answers I desperately needed. I felt detached from my body, everything about myself was causing distress and then I found an umbrella term known as Transgender. Over the course of those 3 months I constantly searched for more information on this term and it just fit like a puzzle piece. I was in complete denial and didn't know what to do with this information or myself. I didn't think that was me and I was in a constant state of fear of what others would think. I finally started to get my confidence back as I got closer to this very important week. It felt like someone lifted the elephant off my chest when I found my answers. I thought to myself, maybe it was time to talk and tell someone I know and trust. Eventually, I had enough in me to talk to two of my closest friends. • 33. Oedipus Self Identity Analysis The implications of self–identity are far ranging. The light we view ourselves in determines the very basics of who we think we are, and what action we think we should take to fulfill our identity; to make it flourish. Men build these identities on many different foundations. For one man might say he builds it on the goodness of his heart, another on his career. Yet every foundation, save that of Jesus Christ, has the tendency to crumble and fall apart beneath us. When the good man realizes he has sinned; when the career of an old man fades away, their identities are no more. Oedipus, the mighty king of Thebes, is such a man. In Sophocles' Oedipus the King, Oedipus lacked the unshakable identity that can only be found in Christ, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The University of Denver published manual in 2012, categorizing how college students view themselves into twelve areas. These twelve can be simplified into two basic groups: The performance of an individual (Intellectually, athletically, occupationally, or otherwise), and their relationships with others. Of these two groups, the latter has been more definitive in our society today because media influences have put even greater stress on those who build their identity on relationships. USA Today conducted a survey in 2014, revealing that almost all the college students they interviewed have had a fear of being left out that has been generated by social media. Because they have let these relationships define them, they are constantly placed in a state of potential identity crisis. A relational problem with a group of friends or a partner could lead to a serious breakdown of how that individual views themselves. Though not as prevalent, the second group of characteristics based on performance can have an equally severe impact if it is used to build an identity. Any number of events such as a loss of job, physical injury, academic failure, failure to reach a goal, and old age can all tear that identity down. As we age, our mind and body both deteriorate, and with this change can come a host of physical and mental shortcomings. The simple saying treat others the way you want to be treated can go a long way in the business field. Though some may argue that to a business person money speaks louder than words. As a result of this rejection, Didion developed the definition of self–respect that we all accept, one placing the opinion of others above her own. This personal and vulnerable memory included in the essay marks a point in Didion's life where she encountered an unfair situation and began to struggle with acceptance of self–respect. Here, Didion dismisses the preconceived notion that she always held full self–respect for herself by labeling herself inferior to the sorority. Despite Didion's current achievements for the popular Vanity Fair magazine, this personalanecdote shows failure, allowing Didion to appeal to ethos and pathos. She does not intend for the audience to sympathize for her shame, but to provide a personal example of the negative impact an ordinary individual can encounter with the incorrect definition of self–respect. Didion also displays credibility by re–evaluating her own level of self–respect to relate with the audience as they develop this characteristic. Didion uses inclusive pronouns such as, "we" and "our," to once again highlight that she is relatable to the audience. This allows for construction of Didion's character by displaying credibility by appearance of standard individual, rather than a famous author and model. Writing 2 Yijia Chen In the article, "The self in the age of Information," Kenneth Gergen argues that under the information era, technology leads people to lose the "self" and reflect this lost on the writing. Discussing the same period, Jeremy Rifkin in the chapter "A Postmodern Stage" showed a more positive perspective about the change. To support his argument, Gergen elaborates damages in the community and institution that nurtured independentself, the direct erosion to solitary self. In the pre–modern world, people due to the lack of communication and transportation tools, have fewer opportunities to get in touch with various people outside. Therefore, people form consistent relationships with others, which derive a strong sense of "being somebody" everyone is familiar with. However, the advances in communication enable people to move household often and be in contact with a wider range of friends leading to average weakening bonds with more and fast changing friends. As a result of the decrease in deep relationships, in Gergen's notion, people receive less sense of identification. Moreover, the multi–voices raised today and the suspicions over speakers' motivations confuse people from faith to distrust.
