The Labyrinth Conflict
The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan Setting The story first takes off at Goode high school in
modern day New York. Percy was attacked by two empousai in the band room while the orientation
was going on. It proceeds to Camp Half Blood, the demigod training camp that Percy visits every
summer. Throughout most of the story, the group is traveling in the Labyrinth, an intricate maze that
leads to every place possible. They come upon Alcatraz, which is a famous military prison in San
Francisco where they rescue Briares. Percy cleans out the stables at the Triple G Ranch which
houses Geryon. Percy falls off Mount Saint Helens and causes environmental damage to the area.

The camp becomes aware of a growing threat that will come to attack them. Annabeth asks the
oracle for a quest to find Daedalus. Percy, Grover and Tyson accompany her even though Chiron
warns her that only two may go. They run into Janus and Hera, who explains to them that Percy
knows how to find the entrance to Daedalus's workshop. They release Briares, a timid and rare 100
eyed giant from Kampe. They wound up into Geryon's ranch where Percy must clean the flesh
eating horses' stables to free his friends. Before they leave, Bianca, Nico's deceased sister helps him
forgive Percy for her death. The group separates to find Pan and Hephaestus's workshop. After
falling from a huge mountain, Percy washes upon the island of Calypso. She cares and falls in love
with him but in the end has to send him back. Percy realizes how he can navigate the labyrinth and
returns to the camp. He finds Rachel, a human who can see through Mist. They get captured by
Antaeus who challenges Percy to a fight. They escape with the help of the whistle and discover the
workshop where Quintus reveals that he is Daedalus. They flee from the workshop with wings and
finds Pan in a cave. They come back to camp just in time for battle. Daedalus destroys the labyrinth
with Luke's army inside by killing himself. The book ends with Percy's blue themed birthday

Minotaur Myth Essay
One day the Minotaur was out walking around the labyrinth. When he came across a room in a very
far off passage that hasn't been used. When the Minotaur went and checked it out he had found
nothing but evidence that something was living in the room. So the minotaur decided he would
come and check on the room every day to find out what was living in there. Each day he would
come at a different time to try to catch it. The next day the Minotaur came back and he still couldn't
find anyone. This infuriated the Minotaur. But he did find a HUGE footprint in this room something
bigger than anyone had ever found before. There was a fire pit in in the center of this room and it
was still smoldering. This told the minotaur that the figure would be coming ... Show more content

When the monster opened the door he saw the minotaur and he ran. But the minotaur caught him
because he ran down the wrong corridor and it was a dead end. So now the minotaur asked it who it
was and what it was doing. The monster replied that it was bigfoot. He was down there because he
wanted to be able to hide from the humans when needed. The minotaur told him that he needed to
find a different place to live. But Bigfoot refused to move he said that he liked living in the
labyrinth. So they settled that the next day they would have a battle and the person that wins stays.
They have their choice of one person or immortal to have there. They set to meet at the center at
noon. The next day the Minotaur shows up with Poseidon and Bigfoot with Artemis. They started
off and the Minotaur takes the first move and takes bigfoot by surprise and knocks him back. He
gets back up and goes after the minotaur and couldn't catch him. The Minotaur asks Poseidon to

Similarities Between Flowers For Algernon And The Battle...
C.G. Jung once said, "The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical
substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed." In the novels, Flowers for Algernon by
Daniel Keyes and The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan displays a powerful relationship with
the characters Charlie Gordon, Alice Kinnian & his bakery friends (Joe, Gimpy, and Frank) as well
as Percy Jackson and Annabeth. Through the novel, they demonstrate friendship, love, and loyalty.
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is about a 32–year–old, mentally challenged man named
Charlie Gordon. He attends the Beekmin College For Retarded Adults where he learns new things
because he has a motivation and willingness to learn new things. In The Battle of the Labyrinth by
Rick Riordan is about Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase leading their friends in a quest to find the
inventor of the legendary Labyrinth, when they discover its role in a dark plot against the camp by
Kronos' Army. To begin with, both novels share multiple similarities with the characters. In Flowers
for Algernon Charlie demonstrates friendship with Alice Kinnian. Whenever Charlie is at the
Beekmin College For Retarded Adults, Miss Kinnian supports Charlie in every way she can. "She
likes me alot becaus I try very hard to lern everything not like some of the pepul at the adult center
who don't really care." (Keyes 12) As Charlie described Miss Kinnian at the Beekmin College For
Retarded Adults, she was a teacher who supported him and had a friendship which made Charlie
feel closer to her. Through their friendship, Miss Kinnian wanted Charlie to get smart giving him
help and support which Charlie needed, "She wants me to get smart. I know ." (Keyes 12) Due to
the good relationship with each other, Charlie states, "One thing? I, like about, Dear Miss Kinnian:
(thats, the way? it goes; in a buisness, letter (if I ever go! into business?) is that, she: always; gives
me' a reason" when– I ask. She"s a gen'ius!" (Keyes 39) She never gives up hope on Charlie and his
motivation to learn. Through their relation at the Beekmin College For Retarded Adults, they create

Palace Of Knossos Essay
Sir Arthur Evans discovered the Palace of Knossos (Fig. 1) when looking for the legendary labyrinth
of King Minos on the Island of Crete. According to the myth, King Minos had a complex labyrinth
built to house the Minotaur, a monstrous creature his wife gave birth to. The palace's construction
was a maze of rooms with no logical set up and led Evans to think the palace itself was most likely
the labyrinth. The myth states, every year seven girls and seven boys of a young age were chosen as
tribute to enter the labyrinth.1 The myth of the labyrinth in connection with the Palace of Knossos
can be linked to a right of passage or a coming of age ritual in Ancient Greece. The tributes entered,
wrestled with their thoughts and finally emerged as adults ready to take their places in society. The
Palace of Knossos located on the island of Crete, a few miles from the city of Herakleion covers
many acres. Sir Arthur Evans is typically credited with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When looking at the architectural plans of the palace there appears to be no logical order to its
arrangement. With no central axis, the rooms seem as if they were placed in random spots making
the navigation of the palace confusing. The maze–like design of the complex (Fig. 7) lead Evans to
think the palace complex was the labyrinth. When examining the ground floor of the palace, Evans
discovered a meander pattern decorating the floor. The pattern only ran in one direction, towards the
center of the palace. The center was an open courtyard where the ritual sport of bull leaping most
likely took place. The myth states that the battle of Theseus and the Minotaur took place in the
center of the Labyrinth, making a connection the central court of Minos' palace. "The labyrinth,
whose linear form is the meander [pattern], represents a difficult passage; it was confusing [and]
hard to follow... but eventually lead back to the

Pantheon And Colosseum Research Paper
Roman ingenuity in architecture has far surpassed time, and some of the major developments are
evident in two of Rome's most famous structures; the Pantheon and the Colosseum. The Romans
were able to construct these massive feats with their technical advancements in the use of the arch,
baked brick, cement and concrete; allowing them to build bigger and higher than ever before. The
Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, is by far one of the greatest architectural
engineering gifts left behind by the Romans; the most famous and most recognizable buildings in
the world. The amphitheater served as a stage for entertainment, such as gladiator and animal fights,
public executions, and even naval battles. Construction of the Colosseum ... Show more content on

Very similar in shape to the epic Colosseum which is oval, but different in its purpose. The
Colosseum also boasts greater heights than the Pantheon, but that does not make it any less
impressive. The Pantheon is a major Roman monument that showcases simplistic structural design
but is amazing in the sense of its dimensions. With columns garnering 12 meters in height, and
weighing 50 tons, made of solid granite; it is incredible that they were able to transport them in one
piece from such great distances. Atop of the columns were lintels made of marble weighing 30 tons.
However the greatest example of the Roman's advancement in their use of materials is seen in the
coffered dome of the Pantheon, which is made entirely of concrete; 5000 tons of it. Nothing larger
than the dome of the Pantheon was built until the 20th century. The inside diameter of the dome is
almost 44 meters wide, half the length of a football field. The concrete in the dome has no steel
reinforcements, which is something that would not be attempted today. To admit light and
ventilation throughout the building, a 29 foot oculus (eye) is left open to the sky at the top. That just
shows how bold and ingenious the Romans really were because the dome itself is a perfect
hemisphere. It is astounding the achievement that Romans have made with the Pantheon, having to
come up with an original device, and experiment with building materials, in order to construct such
magnificent dimensions. It would not have been possible to do this without the Roman's invention

Pan's Labyrinth Themes
Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane A child's imagination is the most powerful weapon he or she can be
armed with and it is within Guillermo Del Toro's captivating and Academy Award winning film,
Pan's Labyrinth that we are presented with this concept as well as themes of existentialism and
duality. Various motifs such as; brutality, innocence, childhood and war, allow Del Toro to construct
two worlds that are all too real and very similar for one young girl. Set in Spain 1944 during a time
when people are forced to choose between their beliefs and their survival, Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) is
compelled to choose her faith in fantasies over her hope in humanity. Ofelia is in a battle of good vs.
evil vs. innocence and must realize that all three cannot thrive. The opening and ending scenes of
Del Toro's film show Ofelia's birth, death and rebirth while simultaneously providing the answers to
the frequent philosophical questions Del Toro exhibited. The ... Show more content on

At this stage of the movie, the faun character is completely rejuvenated and is with Ofelia but is
fixated on opening the labyrinth's portal. The faun's transformation from old to young was done
intentionally so that Ofelia's character could be judged properly. It is much harder to say "no" when
temptation presents itself in a beautiful form. Ofelia's good nature and pure heart would be revealed
in this moment and this was something del Toro wanted to exemplify. Ending a film with a child
dying is disturbing however; del Toro chooses to make her death about redemption since she
regained her innocence through death (i.e. rebirth). Ofelia would be "born again" and assume her
role as Princess of the fantasy realm she desperately desired to be apart of. The final shot of Ofelia
mirrors the opening shot of the film but this time, blood drips down and out of her nose while the
nostalgic song plays softly, signifying the

Analysis Of Percy Jackson And The Battle Of The Labyrinth
Percy Jackson And the Battle of the Labyrinth Draft Prompt: In this book, Hera talks about how
important family is. However, we then learn that she really only values people who are perfect.
Write an essay describing three characters in this book who have flaws and imperfections. Are these
characters still useful? You should write a paragraph about each one, and make sure to describe a
time where they were helpful because of their imperfections. Then, write a fourth paragraph about
how a real person or event in your life was better because of some kind of mistake or flaw. In the
exciting book, Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan, a son of Poseidon

Nico is a son of Hades and can summon undead warriors and metals and holds a stygian iron blade
which can slice through any monster but Titans. Nico's flaw is that he can't forgive. When his sister
died he always blamed Percy for her death because Percy secretly went on the quest and told Nico
he would protect his sister. Nico now tries to revive his sister who continuously tells him to stop
trying. One time, Nico is filled with so much rage after his ghost mentor King Minos betrayed him
to the Titans that he dispelled Minos forever and all the monsters in the room were destroyed. Even
as an eleven–year–old he revealed all the dark things in him and showed a much colder side to him.
He helped Percy and his friends get back to Camp Half–Blood to help stop an invasion they found
out. Him not being able to forgive Minos's trickery allowed his rage to dispel Minos and his
monsters. The last example of someone flawed is Daedalus. Daedalus is the ancient inventor who
has cheated death and is an adult demi god swordsman who controls the Labyrinth. Daedalus' flaw
is the flaw of jealousy. He killed his nephew Perdix for suggesting that Perdix might become
smarter than him. He then stole Perdix's scrolls on how to create a new body for a human and
transfer their animus (spirit) into the new body. Then Daedalus used the scroll and created himself a
new body, then fled to the safety of his Labyrinth. Daedalus' jealousy of how good Percy was

The Labyrinth of Life in The Garden of Forking Paths by Yu Tsun
A labyrinth is classically a human construction designed to confuse. It can trap our lives, hiding our
past and future and constantly forcing us to make choices, even though we may not know what the
consequences of those choices might be. The confusion of the puzzle may even tempt us to run
blindly through the labyrinth, ending in disaster. Life itself is often considered such a labyrinth, and
by adopting the strategies of travelers who came before and choosing our path cautiously while
playing close attention to the patterns of our lives, we may find the right path through the maze.
Although the Labyrinth appears to be an intellectual challenge, every turn is ... Show more content

Similarly to Yu Tsun on his fatal journey, we are constantly confronted with choices, but we are
dimly aware of the presence of most of these choices, and even less aware of the full consequences.
Once Albert turned his back, Yu Tsun ?readied the revolver?(579) and ?fired with extreme caution?
(579). Yu Tsun did not consider any ethical consequences of his actions; he just killed a man who
spent his entire life unraveling the history of Yu Tsun's ancestor. Even worse is the chance that the
best intentions can still lead to disaster. Yu Tsun remembers that the key to ?certain labyrinths? is ?to
turn always to the left? (575). Unfortunately, the labyrinth of life lacks such simple rules to guide us.
In fact, keeping a path which is too constant may result in walking in circles. Therefore, whether the
labyrinth is a maze of our own construction or a trap we have found ourselves in, there is no easy
way to escape any predicament.
Yu Tsun chose to ?impose a future as irrevocable as the past? (575) when trying to choose his path,
but it is the past that defines is, and provides us knowledge of how things could occur in the future.
Not only is Yu Tsun ignoring his past, but by ?[imposing] a future as irrevocable as the past? (575),
he is completely bypassing any ethical decisions he has to make. By forcing himself to believe that
he must kill Albert, he is denying the fact that

Laberinto Del Fauno
For my third cultural project I watch El Laberinto del Fauno, by Guillermo del Toro Gómez. The
film is known in English as pan's labyrinth but the direct translation would be the labyrinth of the
faun. The film was rated R and it deserves this rating. The film was dark fantasy and had many
scenes suited for adults. It was a Spanish/Mexican film("EL LABERINTO"). It was enjoyable and
did provide some insight into the life and culture of the setting.
The movie took place in 1944 Spain. The setting is important to several plot points. In 1944 Spain
would have only recently ended its civil war (Encyclopædia Britannica). The war was between the
republican government and the nationalists. Both had foreign support. The nationalists got support
from fascist Germany and the republicans from the Soviet Union (Encyclopædia Britannica). This is
helpful in understanding the why they made the speech about people having food. Ensuring that
people are fed is a hallmark of socialism and communism. The nationalists won the war but
continued to be plagued by pockets of resistance (THE FRANCO YEARS). These resistance
fighters are what brings the captain out into the fields and with him Ofelia and her pregnant mother.
Outside of Spain the world is nearing the end of the second world war, this was referenced in the
newspaper talking about D–day. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

of violence in this movie. Other than children, who should not see this film, people should be
warned that is not happy and the violence is very realistic I had a hard time watching the scene
where the captain uses a wine bottle to smash in a farmer's face. It does have wonderful scenes and

with her stepfather, an evil Capitan, and her pregnant mother. In an overgrown labyrinth, she
encounters a magical faun who believes she is a lost princess and aids her in a journey to prove
herself. The trials Ofelia faces are comparable to the trials Odysseus faces before he can return to

Ofelia, must pass through many heroic trials before she reaches the end, similar to Odysseus in The

The Battle Of The Labyrinth Chapter Summary
Journal 3 In the books, The Titan's Curse and The Battle Of The Labyrinth, personalities of various
characters have been exposed to the reader. In the book The Titan's Curse, some of the characters
were forced to make indelible decisions because if they make the wrong choice, they will have to
live with it forever. At the end of this book, Percy took a path on which he basically had the world
on his shoulders. He saw the Goddess of the hunters carrying the sky on her shoulders, and Percy
had to take the burden from her so she could fight the God of war. Percy described it saying it felt
like his bones were going to be shattered any second. Many of the characters true colors were

The Hunger Games And The Greek Myth Of Theseus
Research Paper Final Draft: President V.S. Minotaur In both the Hunger Games and the Greek myth
of Theseus and the Minotaur, children were used as sacrifices to make the Capitol and/or Minotaur
seem unbeatable. Children were offered as sacrifices to make the Capitol/Minotaur seem unbeatable.
In the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur as punishment for displeasing Crete, seven youths
and seven maidens were periodically sent into a labyrinth containing a Minotaur which was half
man and half bull. This cycle doesn?t end until Theseus volunteers to go into the labyrinth and kill
the Minotaur. Theseus is successful in killing the beast and becomes the epic hero of this story.
In the Hunger Games, children were sent into an arena to kill each other as sacrifices this was a
symbol of the capitol?s power. Once a child reached the age of twelve their name was entered into
the mix for the Hunger Games, a fight to the death broadcasted on live TV. Katniss?s twelve–year
old sister Prim gets picked and Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and the other district twelve
tribute, Peeta are the last two survivors and defy the Capitol by trying to kill themselves at the same
time. At the last second they are stopped and both come out of the arena victorious.
Once in the labyrinth, there was no escaping, much like the Hunger Games, the only way out was to
be the last living tribute. Katniss talking to Peeta says, ?Careful, there?s a force field up ahead?

Departure, Initiation, and Return in Jorge Luis Borges' "The Garden of Forking Paths"
At first glance, Jorge Luis Borges' short story, "The Garden of Forking Paths," tells the tale of a
Chinese agent for the Germans against the English during the first World War. In this short story, Yu
Tsun (the spy) learns that a fellow agent has been eliminated. This means that he will undoubtedly
be the next to be arrested and killed. This will probably happen before the end of the day. Yu Tsun
has a mission that must be performed: send the name of the city containing the English air base to
Berlin without the message being intercepted before he is captured. Yu Tsun, although a flawed
hero, is the story's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this moment, the situation seems hopeless; he appears helpless and unable to complete his
mission. However, "[s]omething–––perhaps the mere vain ostentation of proving [his] resources
were nil–––made [him] look through [his] pockets"(264). He finds, among other things, a "revolver
with one bullet"(264). This gives him the idea that "a pistol report can be heard at a great distance"
(264). The "something" could be related in a mythological sense to supernatural aid. While atypical
because there is no form (of either flesh or spirit), it is help from a source outside of his conscious
thought (264). He looks in the telephone book for a name and formulates a plan that is not
immediately revealed to the reader. He sets out on his journey and goes to the train station. He gets
in his seat and the train begins to move when he sees "[a] man whom [he] recognized running in
vain to the end of the platform" (264–265). The man is his pursuer–––Captain Richard Madden. Yu
Tsun is frightened and "shrank into the far corner of the seat, away from the dreaded window" (265).
On the surface, this may look to be merely a narrow escape, but a mythological perspective takes a
deeper look. This could be viewed as a parallel to crossing the first threshold and going into the
unknown past a hostile guard. In The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Joseph Campbell says that, "
[t]he adventure is always and everywhere a passage beyond the veil

Theseus found his father,he heard about this barbarous beast, the Minotaur, half man, half bull, who

Theseus is a youthful mortal who wanted only, but to know who his father is, so he inquired his

Labyrinth In Looking For Alaska
In the engrossing novel, "Looking for Alaska," John Green uses multiple discrete characters to seek
for the purpose of life, death and suffering. He symbolizes these ideas with a labyrinth. Its meaning
is a mystery of the novel, although Alaska Young thinks that it's about suffering. An excerpt from the
book of a conversation between Miles and Alaska explains the concept: "It's not life or death, the
labyrinth." "Um, okay. So what is it?" "Suffering," she said. "Doing wrong and having wrong things
happen to you. That's the problem. Bolivar was talking about the pain, not about the living or dying.
How do you get out of the labyrinth of suffering?" (pg. 52) Each character's escape of the labyrinth
is different. The three main characters are Alaska Young, Miles "Pudge" Halter, and Chip "The
Colonel" Martin. Their lives are very distinct but somewhat relatable. The most empathetic character
is Miles "Pudge" Halter. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he arrives at Culver Creek, he befriends The Colonel (known for his charisma and strong
leadership qualities) who is blatantly, the opposite of Pudge. The Colonel tells Pudge when the
"Weekday Warriors" were hazing him that "We will deal with those bastards, Pudge. I promise you.
They will regret messing with one of my friends." (pg. 127) This implies that The Colonel is also a
loyal friend. Pudge also has a strange obsession with the last words of dead people. This may have
to do with Green's general theme of life and death. Pudge befriends the mysterious Alaska Young
through The Colonel. Pudge grows very fond of the so–called "hot mess" and describes her by
saying, "If people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane." (pg

Analytical Essay: The Battle Of The Labyrinth
The essay that I am writing is why you should read this awesome book "The battle of the labyrinth".
A brief statement about this book is that, it combines multiple themes like action when Percy and his
friends slays multiple monsters. I am going to give the summary of the book, character traits of the
main characters Percy, Annabeth, Tyson, and Grover. Like the example I gave above I will be giving
more themes of the book that I feel that comes from the book while reading. A brief summary of the
book that I think you should read. Percy just arrived at his new school for his 9th grade orientation
tour. He finds an old friend during a tour "Rachel Elizabeth Dare" (Riordan 6). The orientation tour
went all wrong. There were cheerleaders ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Camp Half–Blood, because they weren't safe where they were. When Percy and Annabeth got to
camp their friend Grover on trial to get his searchers license taken away because if you have one

So the quest that Grover was==== supposed to complete was taken away. Grover begged them for
one more chance, and they gave him one. His new quest was to find the labyrinth with the help of
his friends Percy, Tyson, and Annabeth. Then Percy finds out that a man names Luke is using the

Pan's Labyrinth Film Analysis
Magical realism is a concept that usually seems to coincide with an unsettling environment. For
instance, Pan's Labyrinth by Guillermo Del Toro and Night of the Shooting Stars by Giuliani G. De
Negri both focus on the idea of fiction centered around a destructive ambience. Both movies take
place in a deteriorating war zone in which the main characters manage to escape temporarily but still
witness horrific event that they manifest into their own type of dream reality. Pan's Labyrinth takes
place during the Spanish Civil War where a young Ofelia is immersed in the chaos after being
forced to live with her sadistic army captain stepfather. She is then encountered by a fairy owned by
the faun Pan, who informs her that she is the long–lost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both Pan's Labyrinth and Night of the Shooting stars have an ending that illustrates tragedy yet
happiness. For example, Ofelia dies as gun point by her stepfather but is reunited with her dead
bother and is granted immortality in her kingdom. For this scene, the powerful image of Ofelia
looking lifeless after she falls, and a trail of blood leaves her nose. That single stream of blood along
with the subtle smile on her face illustrates the short–lived pain she encountered due to her
imagination. Her imagination allowed her to create her own reality in which she could cope with
death in her own individualistic way. In Night of the Shooting Stars, Cecilia absorbs the violence
and manifests these feeling towards incantations and classical heroism at the end. Cecilia also
witness's numerous deaths yet ends up creating a life of her own at the end when she's telling her
baby her story. This idea of light in the darkest of times is also displayed in Slaughterhouse–five.
The ending of the book demonstrates a blood–filled war along with Billy Pilgrim as a prisoner of
war. As the book shifts from real war times to Tralfamadorians due to time–travel, the novel ends
with the prisoners emerging from confinement after the war is over and a bird exclaiming "pootee–
weet?". This not only emphasizes the lack of mention

Imagination Leads to Subservience in Pan's Labyrinth and...
Guillermo Del Toro, the director of Pan's Labyrinth, and Neil Jordan, the director of The Company
of Wolves, use the idea of imagination to escape reality. The movies depict the heroines, Ofelia and
Rosaleen using imagination to escape the real world's despotism. In Pan's Labyrinth and The
Company of Wolves, Ofelia and Rosaleen utilize ire to invent a whimsical world that mirrors the
oppression of their physical world and momentarily provides them with control. But, ultimately
their minds become a source of enslavement for them.
In Pan's Labyrinth, Ofelia's anguish becomes beneficial for her when she constructs a realm of
magical creatures. Ofelia is abused by her fascist step–father, Captain Vidal and has a mother who
provides minimal support for her. In the movie, the first instance of abuse is seen when Captain
Vidal squeezes Ofelia's hand. He squeezes her hand to assert dominance and correction on Ofelia. At
the same time, her mother, Carmen, does not believe in Ofelia's fairy tales and assumes Ofelia is
behaving mischievously. The mother explains, "Fairy tales– you are a bit too old to be filling your
head with such nonsense" (Pan's Labyrinth). Ofelia becomes embittered by the misery that
surrounds her and her anger inspires her to use her imagination. (Prove with examples) Through her
fantasies, she is now able to escape her mother's abandonment and her tyrannical step–father.

Princess Tutu Identity
Princess Tutu Princess Tutu is a Japanese anime series created by Ikuko Itoh and ran from 2002 to
2003. Drawing inspiration from various ballets and fairy tales, Princess Tutu follows the story of
Ahiru (literally translated at "Duck"), a simple duck who is given a magical necklace by a
mysterious man known as Drosselmeyer. This necklace allows her to not only turn into a human
girl, but also the mythical Princess Tutu. With this pendant, she must search for and gather all the
heart shards to restore the shattered heart of the prince, which will give him the power to do battle
with the evil Raven. Despite its fairly generic description, Princess Tutu ended up being one of the
more subversive and emotionally–charged anime series out there. It is, in my opinion, an excellent
portrayal of the young adolescent girl's struggle with identity and the narrow roles that have already
been defined for her. Unlike many other "magical girl" anime series, where the protagonists wholly
accepts their new life with little to no issue, Ahiru visibly struggles with her new identities and
wonders often who the "real" Ahiru is – and if that makes any difference in her accomplishments in
her Princess Tutu persona. Princess Tutu is, at its core, a message to young girls to be their true self,
but in a slightly different version. Princess Tutu is a story that is all about people regaining their
agency and rejecting the roles created for them in order to find their own path. Ahiru's true self is

Character Analysis Of Apollo
After being cast down from Olympus, Apollo, the former god of prophecy, seeks to reclaim his spot
in the Olympian Council. He meets a young demigod, Meg McCaffrey, who claims his service. With
her help, Apollo begins his quest to restore his godly powers. On his journey, he aids his
companions by providing limited wisdom, mainly from his own experience as a god. Apollo is
generally a very self–centered character and does not understand much about humans as he would
have liked. He also classifies as practical and sometimes sarcastic. Meg McCaffrey is Apollo's 12
year old demigod master. She is a daughter of Demeter, goddess of harvest and agriculture, and her
genetic father was killed by the Beast, who later adopts Meg as his own daughter. She is often very
childish and clever, yet she shows capability and confidence. Meg also grows wary and begins to
feel distrust later in the story, however, she was encouraged to continue on by Apollo. Using her
ability, Meg hopes to assist Apollo in his next mission. The demigod son of Hephaestus, Leo Valdez,
is one of the main characters supporting the protagonist, Apollo. He has a huge ego and great faith in
his abilities. During the quest, Leo provides comic relief and warmth. He is also the main mechanic
of the group, and without his help, the mission to get to Indiana would be in vain. Leo always
remains loyal to his friends yet still stays true to himself. Apollo has been cast down onto the human

advantage when an extremely powerful drug lord threatens to kill him and his family. The drug
lord's name is Gustavo Fring. Gustavo is in charge of a successful fast food chain that serves as a

Walt knows this, he goes to Hector Salamanca and they devise a plan. Because of their mutual
hatred toward Gustavo Fring, they devise a plan to kill him. He plants a bomb underneath Hector's

Violence In Pan's Labyrinth
El Laberinto Del Pan
El Laberinto Del Pan, or Pan's Labyrinth, is based on the turbulence that occurred after the Civil
War. It is set in post–Civil War Spain, in 1944, after the victory of the fascist Nationalists led by
General Franco. Though the war had ended, many republican rebels were still striking back against
the new oppressive government. Other citizens were exiled, or attempted to flee the country. A large
portion of those that did rebel hid in more remote areas of Spain, such as the region of Navarra in
Northern Spain, where Pan's Labyrinth takes place.
During the Spanish civil war, both Nationalists and Republicans killed, tortured, and attacked
citizens. Anyone either side disagreed with was likely to be harmed (school teachers, ... Show more

My feelings about Pan's Labyrinth are rather split, as I appreciate the storyline but disliked the
actual movie. When I first watched the film, I was shocked and horrified (I honestly thought it was
horrible). At the time, I was too hung up on the creepiness and violence of the movie to value
anything about it. After a few days of thinking about it, however, I was able to appreciate the
subtlety behind the story, as well as the uniqueness of the plot. Pan's Labyrinth is similar to a twisted
fairy tale, and has an interesting storyline, incredible effects, and good characterization. For those
reasons, I feel as if I should recommend this movie to others. Pan's Labyrinth is essentially a classic,
and is probably the kind of movie everyone should see once. Despite this, I cannot imagine possibly
watching the movie a second time. It is for this reason that I wouldn't recommend the movie to
others, as I did not enjoy it as I watched it. As I viewed the film, I was shocked and horrified by the
violence, annoyed with Ophelia's character, and slightly confused about the storyline. It was only
afterwards, during reflection upon it, that I could appreciate its good qualities. On one hand, I am
interested by Pan's Labyrinth, on the other hand, I hated it. Therefore, I do not actually know if I
would recommend this film to someone else or not. I think it would depend on the person and their

Use Of Irony In The Movie Labyrinth
"You remind me of the babe."
"What babe?" "The babe with the power." "What power?'
"The power of voodoo."
"Who do?"
"You do."
"Do what?"
"Remind me of the babe." These were David Bowie's famous words and conversation between a
goblin in the movie Labyrinth. Jim Henson uses three different types of irony in the movie
Labyrinth, to convey the feeling of surprise in the viewer. How is surprise created in a motion
picture? The author uses the literary device of irony. The three common types of irony are verbal,
dramatic, and situational irony. Initially, verbal irony is when a character says something but does
the opposite. To go along, dramatic irony is when the viewer/reader knows something that the
characters don't. Last but not least, situational ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Internal Conflict In House Of Leaves By Mark Z Danielewski
All humans try to find purpose in life. Their experiences are personal and interconnected with
others. At times, internal conflict can blur the lines between imagination and reality. This is most
evident with the novel House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. The novel is written with a multi–
layer of narratives, and a character that goes insane piecing together a documentary of a fictional
family and an uncanny house. The root of Johnny's conflict becomes apparent as he begins
exploring all the strange occurrences and realizes that almost none of it is real. Yet, the occurrences
were realistic enough to drive Johnny insane. Danielewski uses the multiple hallways of the
Navidson house to mirror the multiple dimensions of the character's psyches. The labyrinth theme,
and use of footnotes lead to confusion between imagination and reality. The layers of puzzles in the
House of Leaves forces the reader to wander through their own psyche's hallways in search of clues
and connections to help them discover new ways in which to interpret themselves. Danielewski uses
the Freud's uncanny concept to create the feeling of unsettled mystery within the walls of the
expanding house. Freud's definition of uncanny implies that "some things must be added to the
novel and unfamiliar if it is to become uncanny." [insert citation #3] Not only is the house uncanny,
but the complicated multi–layered narratives, footnotes and the book itself are just as uncanny. The
core story in the House of

Difference Between Theseus And The Hunger Games
Theseus and the Minotaur Vs. The Hunger Games
An ancient foundational story and a modern story that have some similarities are Theseus and the
Minotaur and The Hunger Games. Both have a storyline where one–person volunteers to protect
someone else and prepare to take on a difficult challenge that could end up being fatal in the end.
In the story between Theseus and the Minotaur, King Minos requested that seven boys and seven
girls come to Crete from Athens every nine years so his son the Minotaur could feast (Gods, Heroes
and Monsters, 4.11.). The Minotaur lived in the center of a very tricky maze called the labyrinth.
Theseus didn't like the idea of sending young children to Crete so he volunteered to go himself and
defeat the Minotaur. Theseus says to his father "When it is time to send the next tribute, I will go as
one of them and I vow that it is the last time the Minotaur will be fed with the flesh of any of our
people (Myths and Legends, 2006)". The bravery Theseus had to save his people is part of the
reason why he is considered a mythological hero. He volunteered himself to defeat the creature not
knowing if he was going to make it himself. He was confident and wise but the maze was confusing
and anyone who goes in doesn't necessary come back out. King Minos wasn't worried because if he
were to defeat his son, he wouldn't find his way back out. In The Hunger Games, there are twelve
districts. Every year a boy and a girl from each district is selected to enter

Essay about Fiction Fused With Reality
Yann Martel's magic realism novel Life of Pi (2006) and Guillermo Del Toro's dark fantasy film
Pan's Labyrinth (2002) fuses fiction with reality as they explore shared concerns such as faith,
survival and the importance of narration. These bildungsroman tales feature teenage protagonists
who undergo profound transformations as they strive to overcome confronting challenges.
Yann Martel is able to blend real elements with the surreal through the use of storytelling. "Without
Richard Parker, I wouldn't be alive today to tell you my story." Yann Martel not only forewarns of
the future events but also demonstrates the characteristics that Piscine has. Animal allegories are

Like Martel, Del Toro forewarns the responder of the battles that Ofelia and Spain are going to go
through. "Because it is in pain that we find the meaning of life" Del Toro uses Ofelia to symbolise
Spain and the horrible violence that happened during the 1930's.Ofelia's parallel worlds provide a
metaphor for two possible outcomes. The fictitious world provides the ending that would occur if
the socialist's won the war, meaning a free world. The "real" world is symbolic for the outcome that
would occur when the fascist's won, a cold controlled dictatorship in which the everyday person was
oppressed by a dictator.
Religion is used as a key issue in Life of Pi, which states that all religions lead to the same goal.
"'All religions are true.' I just want to love God." This idea is carried throughout the book and is
firmly believed by the main protagonist Piscine. Piscine's belief in God is tested regularly with
obstacles that hinder his path towards salvation. The island which Piscine inhabits for a period of a
time symbolises the binary oppositions of religion. The island is carnivorous during the night and
self sufficient and benevolent during the day. Martel suggests the darker side of religion can destroy
its surroundings and in the end destroy itself. Pi has a unique aspect to share with the reader as he is
born a Hindu but decides to practise Islam and Christianity. This emphasises the commonality of

Analysis Of The Garden Of Forking Paths By Jose Borges
"What are the labyrinths in the Borges story and what fantasy themes/issues do they illustrate?" To
me, this response paper is an attempt to ponder, explore and, possibly, answer this question. In doing
so, I will connect my interpretations with the personal experience in order to critically reflect on the
meaning of labyrinths in Borges's story. Overall, I argue that the labyrinths help me understand how
the fantasies of time and imagination of nature are intricately connected with the male–centered
sociopolitical fantasy of triumph, motivation and desire. Through my interpretations, I aim not only
to reflect on my own fantasies, but also to imagine my future as a criminal and environmental
lawyer. In "The Garden of Forking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being stumbled and perplexed by this unexpected multiplicity of time, I had to re–read the story
more than once, and each time I found new meanings. I asked myself, "Who gets to make these
historical decisions and, consequently, create and recreate time and choices? Who benefits from
these decisions that seem to be grounded in male–centered fantasies of the German rulers, spies, and
other heroes? What is nature in this story?" The more I try to grasp the ungraspable meaning of the
story itself, the more I realize that the story can not be understood in linear dimensions. I have to
enter the labyrinth and journey together with Dr. Tsun's monologues and dialogues, as well as I have
to enter into the labyrinth of my sense of self. In doing so, I can develop a personal connection with
this story and understand it better. First of all, I think that Tsun was motivated by his resistance to
German nationalism and racism of the time. He served Germany not to support their war, but to win
his own battle field. He wanted to combat the dominant sociopolitical fantasy of his life. Even
though the German chiefs perceived him as being racially inferior to them, Tsun was highly
motivated and driven to disprove this socially unjust fantasy. His desire to triumph over racism has
led him to find inner strength in his past. Personally, I am surprised by Tsun's cultivated desire to
win over the dominant fantasy and to resist social injustice. I don't understand how one might

In front of Ofeila, the faun appears with a dagger and asks for the child's blood. Unlike in
Adamson's Narnia, there is no triumph in Del Toro's underworld; instead, there is one a final vital

Toro then skillfully fuses this scene with Ofelia's reality as she turns around to face Vidal and he
fires fatal gunshots at her. The director then lights up Ofelia's fallen body to denote the presence of a
heavenly force, and fades this scene into another brightly lit scene of a royal court where Princess
Ofelia joins her royal parents. Being killed by her stepfather is cruelty beyond what Ofelia can
perceive so her mind transforms the entire event into one that she can accept. Her crowning moment
is a justification of an inconceivable act of violence while the Pevencie children's moment of

The Battle Of The Labyrinth Relationship Between Percy And...
Long Write – The Battle of the Labyrinth
Priyanka Balla
For this long write, I decided to look at relationships between characters over time + themes. The
two relationships I decided to focus on were Percy and Annabeth, and Percy and Grover.
The main relationship in the books so far is the relationship between Annabeth and Percy. Annabeth
and Percy have been friends since Percy came to Camp Half–blood three years ago. Their
relationship is good and even though they argue they still get along. After looking at my notes, I
realized that there is a lot of love between the two even if the two don't realize what it is. "I'd missed
Annabeth probably more than I wanted to admit." (The Sea of Monsters) Both of them are very

After looking back at my notes I see now that Annabeth is jealous of Percy's new friendship with a

jealous when Percy would talk to another girl. This got me thinking that their friendship is turning
into love between the two of them. The start of that type of relationship in show the most in this
book "Put your cap back on," I said. "Get out" "What?" Annabeth shrieked. "No! I'm not leaving

now seems almost one–sided. I think that Annabeth realizes that she loves Percy but I don't think he
has figured it out. "Annabeth glared at me like she was going to punch me. And then she did
something that surprised me even more. She kissed me. "Be careful, Seaweed Brain" She put her hat
and vanished. I probably would've sat there for the rest of the day, staring at the lava and trying to
remember what my name was, but the sea demons jarred me back to reality." I predict that in the last

Aegeus Theory Of Theseus
Theseus, also known as Thiseas, is a Greek hero that ruled Athens as king. He was no god nor had
any special powers, just his strength and intelligence to give him a name for himself. There is many
theories on his origin, a question mostly of who his father is. One theory is his father is Poseidon,
his mother being Aethra. This comes into play later on when he is asked to prove his heritage to
Minos, which he does by retrieving his ring in the sea. He ends up being successful, but Minos just
laughs this action off as if it didn't matter much to him. Another theory is that Aegeus is Theseus'
father, which I've found more stories of because it aligns with the fact that Theseus was prince of
Athens, and to be that he'd have to be Aegeus' son. In both stories the mother is Aethra. Aegeus
needed an heir, which he left for Aethra to raise until he was ready to retrieve a sword and sandals
left by Aegeus himself. When Theseus became old enough to move the rock that was imprisoning
his birthright, he headed to Athens to meet his father and take his place as prince. This little
adventure, according to Pantheon.org, turned out to be quite rough, as Theseus encountered many
troubles along the way. Dangerous and unsettling, he ended up defeating multiple burglars, which
made him a hero once he returned to Athens. Such a hero, in fact, that Aegeus' wife was concerned
about people favoring him over Aegeus and set out to poison the man's wine. She does, but Aegeus
spots Theseus'

Wide Awake: Katy Perry Essay
The world will crumble because of the illuminati. It may be dramatic, but the Illuminati attack
simple minds through mass media. As a result, the evil conspiracy makes the worlds entertainment
look wicked. Katy Perry's, a successful pop artist in this country and around the world, popularity
skyrocketed with her danceable music and bold approach. According to
commonsceneconspiracy.com (2013), her hit song "E.T." made many believe Katy Perry "sold her
soul to the devil" or the illuminati to reach prominence. In other words, Katy Perry joined the
Illuminati and her music video 'E.T." gives proof of her joining the "dark side." Almost anybody

She enlightened that the song consist of important reality of breaking up and moving on with life;
does not mean she broke up with her husband right? She wants you to think in that naïve approach.
The album titled "Katy Perry: Part of Me" clearly symbolizes her songs have significance to her.
Why would Katy Perry want the public to believe her husband gave significance to the song if she
gotten over him a while ago? According to Drfunkenberry.com (2013), the answer to that question
resides in hiding the notion of how she went forth with "the Illuminati" and broke free from this
conspiracy hold.
Synopsis and Meaning of the Music Video
The music video begins with Katy Perry finishing her other hit video "California Gurls," and she
happily but discouragingly went to her dressing room. In the scene, it is noticeable that fame comes
easy to her. To make clear, the fame of what "the Illuminati" brought her became second nature. To
illustrate, Katy Perry asked a worker that leads her to the room "Do you think this is going to be a
hit?" the worker responds "For sure", and she states, "Yeah, I have that feeling." What feeling does
Katy Perry feel: a hunch? She obviously knows something that nobody else knows. To explain, Katy
Perry knows success will come to her because of the commitment she made with "the Illuminati".
The deal she made guarantees success for

When the Minotaur went and checked it out he had found nothing but evidence that something was living in the room. So the minotaur decided he would come and check on the room every day to find out what was living in there. Each day he would come at a different time to try to catch it. The next day the Minotaur came back and he still couldn't find anyone. This infuriated the Minotaur. But he did find a HUGE footprint in this room something bigger than anyone had ever found before. There was a fire pit in in the center of this room and it was still smoldering. This told the minotaur that the figure would be coming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. Similarities Between Flowers For Algernon And The Battle... C.G. Jung once said, "The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed." In the novels, Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes and The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan displays a powerful relationship with the characters Charlie Gordon, Alice Kinnian & his bakery friends (Joe, Gimpy, and Frank) as well as Percy Jackson and Annabeth. Through the novel, they demonstrate friendship, love, and loyalty. Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is about a 32–year–old, mentally challenged man named Charlie Gordon. He attends the Beekmin College For Retarded Adults where he learns new things because he has a motivation and willingness to learn new things. In The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan is about Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase leading their friends in a quest to find the inventor of the legendary Labyrinth, when they discover its role in a dark plot against the camp by Kronos' Army. To begin with, both novels share multiple similarities with the characters. In Flowers for Algernon Charlie demonstrates friendship with Alice Kinnian. Whenever Charlie is at the Beekmin College For Retarded Adults, Miss Kinnian supports Charlie in every way she can. "She likes me alot becaus I try very hard to lern everything not like some of the pepul at the adult center who don't really care." (Keyes 12) As Charlie described Miss Kinnian at the Beekmin College For Retarded Adults, she was a teacher who supported him and had a friendship which made Charlie feel closer to her. Through their friendship, Miss Kinnian wanted Charlie to get smart giving him help and support which Charlie needed, "She wants me to get smart. I know ." (Keyes 12) Due to the good relationship with each other, Charlie states, "One thing? I, like about, Dear Miss Kinnian: (thats, the way? it goes; in a buisness, letter (if I ever go! into business?) is that, she: always; gives me' a reason" when– I ask. She"s a gen'ius!" • 4. Palace Of Knossos Essay Sir Arthur Evans discovered the Palace of Knossos (Fig. 1) when looking for the legendary labyrinth of King Minos on the Island of Crete. According to the myth, King Minos had a complex labyrinth built to house the Minotaur, a monstrous creature his wife gave birth to. The palace's construction was a maze of rooms with no logical set up and led Evans to think the palace itself was most likely the labyrinth. The myth states, every year seven girls and seven boys of a young age were chosen as tribute to enter the labyrinth.1 The myth of the labyrinth in connection with the Palace of Knossos can be linked to a right of passage or a coming of age ritual in Ancient Greece. The tributes entered, wrestled with their thoughts and finally emerged as adults ready to take their places in society. The Palace of Knossos located on the island of Crete, a few miles from the city of Herakleion covers many acres. Sir Arthur Evans is typically credited with the ... With no central axis, the rooms seem as if they were placed in random spots making the navigation of the palace confusing. The maze–like design of the complex (Fig. 7) lead Evans to think the palace complex was the labyrinth. When examining the ground floor of the palace, Evans discovered a meander pattern decorating the floor. The pattern only ran in one direction, towards the center of the palace. The center was an open courtyard where the ritual sport of bull leaping most likely took place. The myth states that the battle of Theseus and the Minotaur took place in the center of the Labyrinth, making a connection the central court of Minos' palace. • 5. Pantheon And Colosseum Research Paper Roman ingenuity in architecture has far surpassed time, and some of the major developments are evident in two of Rome's most famous structures; the Pantheon and the Colosseum. The Romans were able to construct these massive feats with their technical advancements in the use of the arch, baked brick, cement and concrete; allowing them to build bigger and higher than ever before. The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, is by far one of the greatest architectural engineering gifts left behind by the Romans; the most famous and most recognizable buildings in the world. The amphitheater served as a stage for entertainment, such as gladiator and animal fights, public executions, and even naval battles. Construction of the Colosseum ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Very similar in shape to the epic Colosseum which is oval, but different in its purpose. The Colosseum also boasts greater heights than the Pantheon, but that does not make it any less impressive. The Pantheon is a major Roman monument that showcases simplistic structural design but is amazing in the sense of its dimensions. With columns garnering 12 meters in height, and weighing 50 tons, made of solid granite; it is incredible that they were able to transport them in one piece from such great distances. Atop of the columns were lintels made of marble weighing 30 tons. However the greatest example of the Roman's advancement in their use of materials is seen in the coffered dome of the Pantheon, which is made entirely of concrete; 5000 tons of it. Nothing larger than the dome of the Pantheon was built until the 20th century. The inside diameter of the dome is almost 44 meters wide, half the length of a football field. The concrete in the dome has no steel reinforcements, which is something that would not be attempted today. To admit light and ventilation throughout the building, a 29 foot oculus (eye) is left open to the sky at the top. That just shows how bold and ingenious the Romans really were because the dome itself is a perfect hemisphere. It is astounding the achievement that Romans have made with the Pantheon, having to come up with an original device, and experiment with building materials, in order to construct such magnificent dimensions. It would not have been possible to do this without the Roman's invention of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pan's Labyrinth Themes Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane A child's imagination is the most powerful weapon he or she can be armed with and it is within Guillermo Del Toro's captivating and Academy Award winning film, Pan's Labyrinth that we are presented with this concept as well as themes of existentialism and duality. Various motifs such as; brutality, innocence, childhood and war, allow Del Toro to construct two worlds that are all too real and very similar for one young girl. Set in Spain 1944 during a time when people are forced to choose between their beliefs and their survival, Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) is compelled to choose her faith in fantasies over her hope in humanity. It is much harder to say "no" when temptation presents itself in a beautiful form. Ofelia's good nature and pure heart would be revealed in this moment and this was something del Toro wanted to exemplify. Ending a film with a child dying is disturbing however; del Toro chooses to make her death about redemption since she regained her innocence through death (i.e. rebirth). Ofelia would be "born again" and assume her role as Princess of the fantasy realm she desperately desired to be apart of. Nico now tries to revive his sister who continuously tells him to stop trying. One time, Nico is filled with so much rage after his ghost mentor King Minos betrayed him to the Titans that he dispelled Minos forever and all the monsters in the room were destroyed. Even as an eleven–year–old he revealed all the dark things in him and showed a much colder side to him. He helped Percy and his friends get back to Camp Half–Blood to help stop an invasion they found out. Him not being able to forgive Minos's trickery allowed his rage to dispel Minos and his monsters. The last example of someone flawed is Daedalus. Daedalus is the ancient inventor who has cheated death and is an adult demi god swordsman who controls the Labyrinth. Daedalus' flaw is the flaw of jealousy. He killed his nephew Perdix for suggesting that Perdix might become smarter than him. He then stole Perdix's scrolls on how to create a new body for a human and transfer their animus (spirit) into the new body. It can trap our lives, hiding our past and future and constantly forcing us to make choices, even though we may not know what the consequences of those choices might be. The confusion of the puzzle may even tempt us to run blindly through the labyrinth, ending in disaster. Similarly to Yu Tsun on his fatal journey, we are constantly confronted with choices, but we are dimly aware of the presence of most of these choices, and even less aware of the full consequences. Once Albert turned his back, Yu Tsun ?readied the revolver?(579) and ?fired with extreme caution? (579). Yu Tsun did not consider any ethical consequences of his actions; he just killed a man who spent his entire life unraveling the history of Yu Tsun's ancestor. Even worse is the chance that the best intentions can still lead to disaster. Yu Tsun remembers that the key to ?certain labyrinths? is ?to turn always to the left? (575). Unfortunately, the labyrinth of life lacks such simple rules to guide us. In fact, keeping a path which is too constant may result in walking in circles. • 10. Laberinto Del Fauno For my third cultural project I watch El Laberinto del Fauno, by Guillermo del Toro Gómez. The film is known in English as pan's labyrinth but the direct translation would be the labyrinth of the faun. The film was rated R and it deserves this rating. The film was dark fantasy and had many scenes suited for adults. It was a Spanish/Mexican film("EL LABERINTO"). It was enjoyable and did provide some insight into the life and culture of the setting. The movie took place in 1944 Spain. The setting is important to several plot points. In 1944 Spain would have only recently ended its civil war (Encyclopædia Britannica). The war was between the republican government and the nationalists. Both had foreign support. The nationalists got support from fascist Germany and the republicans from the Soviet Union (Encyclopædia Britannica). This is helpful in understanding the why they made the speech about people having food. Ensuring that people are fed is a hallmark of socialism and communism. The nationalists won the war but continued to be plagued by pockets of resistance (THE FRANCO YEARS). These resistance fighters are what brings the captain out into the fields and with him Ofelia and her pregnant mother. Outside of Spain the world is nearing the end of the second world war, this was referenced in the newspaper talking about D–day. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the book The Titan's Curse, some of the characters were forced to make indelible decisions because if they make the wrong choice, they will have to live with it forever. At the end of this book, Percy took a path on which he basically had the world on his shoulders. He saw the Goddess of the hunters carrying the sky on her shoulders, and Percy had to take the burden from her so she could fight the God of war. Percy described it saying it felt like his bones were going to be shattered any second. Many of the characters true colors were showed in that battle. However, "[s]omething–––perhaps the mere vain ostentation of proving [his] resources were nil–––made [him] look through [his] pockets"(264). He finds, among other things, a "revolver with one bullet"(264). This gives him the idea that "a pistol report can be heard at a great distance" (264). The "something" could be related in a mythological sense to supernatural aid. While atypical because there is no form (of either flesh or spirit), it is help from a source outside of his conscious thought (264). He looks in the telephone book for a name and formulates a plan that is not immediately revealed to the reader. He sets out on his journey and goes to the train station. He gets in his seat and the train begins to move when he sees "[a] man whom [he] recognized running in vain to the end of the platform" (264–265). The man is his pursuer–––Captain Richard Madden. Yu Tsun is frightened and "shrank into the far corner of the seat, away from the dreaded window" (265). On the surface, this may look to be merely a narrow escape, but a mythological perspective takes a deeper look. He symbolizes these ideas with a labyrinth. Its meaning is a mystery of the novel, although Alaska Young thinks that it's about suffering. An excerpt from the book of a conversation between Miles and Alaska explains the concept: "It's not life or death, the labyrinth." "Um, okay. So what is it?" "Suffering," she said. Drawing inspiration from various ballets and fairy tales, Princess Tutu follows the story of Ahiru (literally translated at "Duck"), a simple duck who is given a magical necklace by a mysterious man known as Drosselmeyer. This necklace allows her to not only turn into a human girl, but also the mythical Princess Tutu. With this pendant, she must search for and gather all the heart shards to restore the shattered heart of the prince, which will give him the power to do battle with the evil Raven. Despite its fairly generic description, Princess Tutu ended up being one of the more subversive and emotionally–charged anime series out there. It is, in my opinion, an excellent portrayal of the young adolescent girl's struggle with identity and the narrow roles that have already been defined for her. Unlike many other "magical girl" anime series, where the protagonists wholly accepts their new life with little to no issue, Ahiru visibly struggles with her new identities and wonders often who the "real" Ahiru is – and if that makes any difference in her accomplishments in her Princess Tutu persona. Princess Tutu is, at its core, a message to young girls to be their true self, but in a slightly different version. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My feelings about Pan's Labyrinth are rather split, as I appreciate the storyline but disliked the actual movie. When I first watched the film, I was shocked and horrified (I honestly thought it was horrible). At the time, I was too hung up on the creepiness and violence of the movie to value anything about it. After a few days of thinking about it, however, I was able to appreciate the subtlety behind the story, as well as the uniqueness of the plot. Pan's Labyrinth is similar to a twisted fairy tale, and has an interesting storyline, incredible effects, and good characterization. For those reasons, I feel as if I should recommend this movie to others. Pan's Labyrinth is essentially a classic, and is probably the kind of movie everyone should see once. Despite this, I cannot imagine possibly watching the movie a second time. It is for this reason that I wouldn't recommend the movie to others, as I did not enjoy it as I watched it. As I viewed the film, I was shocked and horrified by the violence, annoyed with Ophelia's character, and slightly confused about the storyline. It was only afterwards, during reflection upon it, that I could appreciate its good qualities. On one hand, I am interested by Pan's Labyrinth, on the other hand, I hated it. Therefore, I do not actually know if I would recommend this film to someone else or not. I think it would depend on the person and their own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Use Of Irony In The Movie Labyrinth "You remind me of the babe." "What babe?" "The babe with the power." "What power?' "The power of voodoo." "Who do?" "You do." "Do what?" "Remind me of the babe." These were David Bowie's famous words and conversation between a goblin in the movie Labyrinth. Jim Henson uses three different types of irony in the movie Labyrinth, to convey the feeling of surprise in the viewer. How is surprise created in a motion picture? The author uses the literary device of irony. The three common types of irony are verbal, dramatic, and situational irony. Initially, verbal irony is when a character says something but does the opposite. To go along, dramatic irony is when the viewer/reader knows something that the characters don't. Last but not least, situational ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 32. Internal Conflict In House Of Leaves By Mark Z Danielewski All humans try to find purpose in life. Their experiences are personal and interconnected with others. At times, internal conflict can blur the lines between imagination and reality. This is most evident with the novel House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. The novel is written with a multi– layer of narratives, and a character that goes insane piecing together a documentary of a fictional family and an uncanny house. The root of Johnny's conflict becomes apparent as he begins exploring all the strange occurrences and realizes that almost none of it is real. Yet, the occurrences were realistic enough to drive Johnny insane. Danielewski uses the multiple hallways of the Navidson house to mirror the multiple dimensions of the character's psyches. The labyrinth theme, and use of footnotes lead to confusion between imagination and reality. The layers of puzzles in the House of Leaves forces the reader to wander through their own psyche's hallways in search of clues and connections to help them discover new ways in which to interpret themselves. Danielewski uses the Freud's uncanny concept to create the feeling of unsettled mystery within the walls of the expanding house. Freud's definition of uncanny implies that "some things must be added to the novel and unfamiliar if it is to become uncanny." [insert citation #3] Not only is the house uncanny, but the complicated multi–layered narratives, footnotes and the book itself are just as uncanny. The core story in the House of ... • 33. Difference Between Theseus And The Hunger Games Theseus and the Minotaur Vs. The Hunger Games An ancient foundational story and a modern story that have some similarities are Theseus and the Minotaur and The Hunger Games. Both have a storyline where one–person volunteers to protect someone else and prepare to take on a difficult challenge that could end up being fatal in the end. In the story between Theseus and the Minotaur, King Minos requested that seven boys and seven girls come to Crete from Athens every nine years so his son the Minotaur could feast (Gods, Heroes and Monsters, 4.11.). The Minotaur lived in the center of a very tricky maze called the labyrinth. Theseus didn't like the idea of sending young children to Crete so he volunteered to go himself and defeat the Minotaur. Theseus says to his father "When it is time to send the next tribute, I will go as one of them and I vow that it is the last time the Minotaur will be fed with the flesh of any of our people (Myths and Legends, 2006)". The bravery Theseus had to save his people is part of the reason why he is considered a mythological hero. He volunteered himself to defeat the creature not knowing if he was going to make it himself. He was confident and wise but the maze was confusing and anyone who goes in doesn't necessary come back out. King Minos wasn't worried because if he were to defeat his son, he wouldn't find his way back out. In The Hunger Games, there are twelve districts. Every year a boy and a girl from each district is selected to enter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Essay about Fiction Fused With Reality Yann Martel's magic realism novel Life of Pi (2006) and Guillermo Del Toro's dark fantasy film Pan's Labyrinth (2002) fuses fiction with reality as they explore shared concerns such as faith, survival and the importance of narration. These bildungsroman tales feature teenage protagonists who undergo profound transformations as they strive to overcome confronting challenges. Yann Martel is able to blend real elements with the surreal through the use of storytelling. "Without Richard Parker, I wouldn't be alive today to tell you my story." Yann Martel not only forewarns of the future events but also demonstrates the characteristics that Piscine has. Animal allegories are used as a recurring motif in the novel and are used to symbolise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like Martel, Del Toro forewarns the responder of the battles that Ofelia and Spain are going to go through. "Because it is in pain that we find the meaning of life" Del Toro uses Ofelia to symbolise Spain and the horrible violence that happened during the 1930's.Ofelia's parallel worlds provide a metaphor for two possible outcomes. The fictitious world provides the ending that would occur if the socialist's won the war, meaning a free world. The "real" world is symbolic for the outcome that would occur when the fascist's won, a cold controlled dictatorship in which the everyday person was oppressed by a dictator. Religion is used as a key issue in Life of Pi, which states that all religions lead to the same goal. "'All religions are true.' I just want to love God." This idea is carried throughout the book and is firmly believed by the main protagonist Piscine. Piscine's belief in God is tested regularly with obstacles that hinder his path towards salvation. The island which Piscine inhabits for a period of a time symbolises the binary oppositions of religion. The island is carnivorous during the night and self sufficient and benevolent during the day. Martel suggests the darker side of religion can destroy its surroundings and in the end destroy itself. Pi has a unique aspect to share with the reader as he is born a Hindu but decides to practise Islam and Christianity. This emphasises the commonality of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Analysis Of The Garden Of Forking Paths By Jose Borges "What are the labyrinths in the Borges story and what fantasy themes/issues do they illustrate?" To me, this response paper is an attempt to ponder, explore and, possibly, answer this question. In doing so, I will connect my interpretations with the personal experience in order to critically reflect on the meaning of labyrinths in Borges's story. Overall, I argue that the labyrinths help me understand how the fantasies of time and imagination of nature are intricately connected with the male–centered sociopolitical fantasy of triumph, motivation and desire. Through my interpretations, I aim not only to reflect on my own fantasies, but also to imagine my future as a criminal and environmental lawyer. In "The Garden of Forking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being stumbled and perplexed by this unexpected multiplicity of time, I had to re–read the story more than once, and each time I found new meanings. I asked myself, "Who gets to make these historical decisions and, consequently, create and recreate time and choices? Who benefits from these decisions that seem to be grounded in male–centered fantasies of the German rulers, spies, and other heroes? What is nature in this story?" The more I try to grasp the ungraspable meaning of the story itself, the more I realize that the story can not be understood in linear dimensions. I have to enter the labyrinth and journey together with Dr. Tsun's monologues and dialogues, as well as I have to enter into the labyrinth of my sense of self. In doing so, I can develop a personal connection with this story and understand it better. First of all, I think that Tsun was motivated by his resistance to German nationalism and racism of the time. He served Germany not to support their war, but to win his own battle field. He wanted to combat the dominant sociopolitical fantasy of his life. Even though the German chiefs perceived him as being racially inferior to them, Tsun was highly motivated and driven to disprove this socially unjust fantasy. His desire to triumph over racism has led him to find inner strength in his past. Personally, I am surprised by Tsun's cultivated desire to win over the dominant fantasy and to resist social injustice. I don't understand how one might ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Adamson's Disturbing Underworld Film Analysis Adamson's fantasy constitutes a journey of emotional growth and culminates with a sense of optimism while Del Toro's disturbing underworld interwoven with reality represents a desperate child's attempt to understand her cruel life as well as her own brutal senseless end. Once the Pevencie children win a battle that liberates Narnia from the White Witch, the audience are treated to a beautiful coronation ceremony to experience "the vicarious thrill of ordinary kids finding themselves elevated to royalty..," (1) as William Arnold , a film critic for the Seattle Post– Intelligentcer remarks. In front of Ofeila, the faun appears with a dagger and asks for the child's blood. Unlike in Adamson's Narnia, there is no triumph in Del Toro's underworld; instead, there is one a final vital decision with serious consequences for Ofelia. She makes a pivotal decision to save her brother. Del Toro then skillfully fuses this scene with Ofelia's reality as she turns around to face Vidal and he fires fatal gunshots at her. The director then lights up Ofelia's fallen body to denote the presence of a heavenly force, and fades this scene into another brightly lit scene of a royal court where Princess Ofelia joins her royal parents. Being killed by her stepfather is cruelty beyond what Ofelia can perceive so her mind transforms the entire event into one that she can accept. Her crowning moment is a justification of an inconceivable act of violence while the Pevencie children's moment of triumph is a glorification of self–discovery. In the end, with fulfillment of personal growth allowing them to face their reality, the adult Pevencie children, on a hunting trip, find a lamp post and return through the wardrobe back into their reality as though time has not ... • 37. The Battle Of The Labyrinth Relationship Between Percy And... Long Write – The Battle of the Labyrinth Priyanka Balla For this long write, I decided to look at relationships between characters over time + themes. The two relationships I decided to focus on were Percy and Annabeth, and Percy and Grover. The main relationship in the books so far is the relationship between Annabeth and Percy. Annabeth and Percy have been friends since Percy came to Camp Half–blood three years ago. Their relationship is good and even though they argue they still get along. After looking at my notes, I realized that there is a lot of love between the two even if the two don't realize what it is. "I'd missed Annabeth probably more than I wanted to admit." (The Sea of Monsters) Both of them are very protective of each other and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After looking back at my notes I see now that Annabeth is jealous of Percy's new friendship with a mortal girl Rachel. I noticed that in this book Annabeth started acting out of character by getting jealous when Percy would talk to another girl. This got me thinking that their friendship is turning into love between the two of them. The start of that type of relationship in show the most in this book "Put your cap back on," I said. "Get out" "What?" Annabeth shrieked. "No! I'm not leaving you.". One thing I noticed is that only Annabeth has changed but Percy hasn't yet, their love right now seems almost one–sided. I think that Annabeth realizes that she loves Percy but I don't think he has figured it out. "Annabeth glared at me like she was going to punch me. And then she did something that surprised me even more. She kissed me. "Be careful, Seaweed Brain" She put her hat and vanished. I probably would've sat there for the rest of the day, staring at the lava and trying to remember what my name was, but the sea demons jarred me back to reality." • 38. Aegeus Theory Of Theseus Theseus, also known as Thiseas, is a Greek hero that ruled Athens as king. He was no god nor had any special powers, just his strength and intelligence to give him a name for himself. There is many theories on his origin, a question mostly of who his father is. One theory is his father is Poseidon, his mother being Aethra. This comes into play later on when he is asked to prove his heritage to Minos, which he does by retrieving his ring in the sea. He ends up being successful, but Minos just laughs this action off as if it didn't matter much to him. Another theory is that Aegeus is Theseus' father, which I've found more stories of because it aligns with the fact that Theseus was prince of Athens, and to be that he'd have to be Aegeus' son. In both stories the mother is Aethra. Aegeus needed an heir, which he left for Aethra to raise until he was ready to retrieve a sword and sandals left by Aegeus himself. When Theseus became old enough to move the rock that was imprisoning his birthright, he headed to Athens to meet his father and take his place as prince. This little adventure, according to Pantheon.org, turned out to be quite rough, as Theseus encountered many troubles along the way. Dangerous and unsettling, he ended up defeating multiple burglars, which made him a hero once he returned to Athens. Such a hero, in fact, that Aegeus' wife was concerned about people favoring him over Aegeus and set out to poison the man's wine. She does, but Aegeus spots Theseus' ...
