The document describes a 5-stroke engine that was invented in 2007. It has 3 cylinders, with 2 cylinders operating on a conventional 4-stroke cycle for power and 1 cylinder used to expand exhaust gases for increased efficiency. The 5 strokes are intake, compression, expansion, extended expansion, and exhaust. This design allows for high efficiency through a large expansion ratio while also providing high power density through a low compression ratio. Potential benefits include reduced fuel consumption up to 30%, lower emissions, and increased thermal efficiency of 20%. While promising, challenges remain in mass balancing and cooling system design.

Let’s change the things
Why not add an additional degree of freedom?
Why not concentrate the different cylinders on
different tasks?
Why not add an additional stroke to the engine
and increase its efficiency?
There is no reason not to try it.

15. Reduce in fuel consumption about 16% to 30%.
Reduce in piston displacement up to 37%.
Large expansion ratio.
Lower exhaust temperature.
Increase in thermal efficiency about 20%.
Maximum energy utilization of exhaust gases.
Light weight and economical in cost.

16. The different masses(2 small & 1 big pistons)
requires a carefully designed mass equilibrium .
The increased heat loss density of the High
Pressure cylinder requires a carefully designed
cooling system .
The power regulation is much more
sophisticated.
Costlier than the current 4-stroke engine.

17. ILMOR Ltd. has already designed a prototype of 5-
stroke 3 cylinder gasoline engine having 700cc which
is able to develop 130hp at 7000rpm and 166N-m of
torque at 5000rpm by fuel consumption of
226gm/Kwh.
ILMOR is currently looking for an investor to create
a second five-stroke prototype engine that will be
tested on a vehicle. Let’s hope they’ll find one soon,
because this technology could actually improve fuel
reduction in the engines.

18. •ILMOR is going to lunch 5-stroke engine in
Formula one cars in 2019.
•The five-stroke cycle seems to be a serious
alternative choice to the classical four-stroke
engine in road cars. The engine is just a
concept for now. With further development it
is expected to take the place of 4-stroke
engines.

19. The technology provides a simple but
elegant solution to the problem of how to
meet
modern demands for increased engine
efficiency, improved power, downsizing and
lower
emissions. Since Better performance is
always a call of the day, the design aims to
increase
the fuel economy and reduce emissions to
save the planet.
