Hamlet, The Prince Of Denmark
Hamlet is one of William Shakespeare 's most iconic plays about a tragedy. The play begins with Hamlet mourning the death of his father and ends with
a hefty amount of corpses. The cause of the multiple deaths may be from Hamlet 's decisions that formed from questioning that which is unknown to
him. Throughout the Shakespearean play, Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, as well as the audience, are placed in a constant state of uncertainty. While
Hamlet grieves his father 's death many things start to unfold and create questions for the audience and Hamlet to queries such as the existence of his
father 's ghost, death and mortality and lastly more for the audience, the mental state of Hamlet himself. The theme of uncertainty challenges
Hamlet in his choices as well as how uncertainty brings out deeper and more complex thoughts for him to explore. Through the lines that are read
and the visual shown through the actors expressions and wardrobe in the play, we see start see how the uncertainty changes and morphs into
different decisions of how Hamlet chooses to live which ultimately cause his demise. . The play begins after his father's death and it starts with a
tone of fear this is because Hamlet is left as a broken piece of himself from the loss of his dad all while there is a ghost roaming the estate. The Ghost
is or claims to be of the late King Hamlet or otherwise known as the prince 's father. From this encounter, Hamlet 's life begins to unravel. The Ghost

Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark
Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark is by far one of the best known of William Shakespeare's works and, may well be the most famous English–language play
ever written. Categorized as one of Shakespeare's "later tragedies," it has developed a reputation as a difficult work to analyze. The Character of
Hamlet is, perhaps, one of the most compelling characters to ever rise from the pages of English literature. He has been subjected to numerous
interpretations and studies over the centuries, his actions thoughts analyzed and analyzed again. And this, probably more than anything else, is the
reason for Hamlet's enduring appeal. One of the biggest arguments in Hamlet's character is his madness; whether he is pretending or if he really goes
insane. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Somehow, even in the short amount of time the people have had to morn the King's death, Claudius convinces everyone that it is time to move on and
put the past behind.
Gertrude is the mother of prince Hamlet and the new wife of his uncle. Her marriage to Claudius largely accounts for the melancholy and cynicism of
her son, who violently attacks her for her lust. She appears with her new husband, the King, and he justifies their marriage to the court. Later she tries
to talk Hamlet out of dwelling on his father, and into seeing the new king as a father.
The Ghost of Hamlet's father is probably the most mysterious character of them all. It is fully covered in armor and takes the form of the ex–King on
Denmark. This spirit has twice appeared to Marcellus and Bernardo (both castle guards) before they see it a third time in the presence of the
skeptical Horatio. It appears again to Hamlet, Horatio, and Marcellus. Hamlet follows, and it tells him how he was poisoned by Claudius, who had
already seduced Hamlet's mother. The spirit then enjoins Hamlet to revenge his murder, but leave his mother to the punishment of heaven. The ghost
appears again in act III, scene iv when Hamlet, having made no attempt to kill Claudius, seems to be on the point of killing his mother. It is said by
Rowe Flatter in his book "Hamlet's Father," that Shakespeare himself acted the part of the Ghost of King Hamlet.
Polonius is the chief advisor to King

Prince Hamlet
Most people can agree, Hamlet is one of the most memorable and famous plays in existence. Prince Hamlet himself is a main contribution to that fact.
After his father's death, mother's near instant remarriage, and apparent ghost of his father asking for Hamlet to avenge him, his character is definitely
pushed to its limit. The young prince of Denmark is driven to madness and plots his revenge through until his death. He doesn't allow himself to be
close to anyone or share his true thoughts and feelings with anyone but the audience, and on occasion, Horatio, who can be identified as Hamlet's likely
true friend. Hamlet was unable to finish college due to the wishes of his mother and has no career or anything to look forward to despite being the
future king. "Hidden beneath Hamlet's bitter cynicism and cruel words is a desire to embrace those that fate dictates he must despise." (Mabillard) ...

empathy and other certain emotion. They both seem uninterested in relationships with women; yet use them to their advantage– Hamlet definitely
takes advantage of Ophelia and his mother, while Sherlock does the same with Irene Adler, Molly Hooper in the BBC show, and other various
women. Though Sherlock has been recreated in modern times, he isn't as sexist as Hamlet, who states "Frailty, thy name is woman!" (1.2.146) and
shows his distaste for most women in the play. Another quality the two possess is best explained by Hart in his Sherlock Holmes analysis essay is
"the character so burdened by genius they're unable to cope with their own humanity." It works for both characters and defines them extremely well.

Prince Hamlet Research Paper
The likeability of Prince Hamlet would greatly affect the measure of his success as the monarch of Denmark. According to King Claudius, "[Hamlet]'s
loved of the distracted multitude" (IV.iii.4). Due to Hamlet being well liked by the subjects of Denmark, his uncle was unable to send him to jail. Prince
Hamlet was only 30 during most or all of the play, knowledge that the reader learns during the conversation with the gravedigger in Act 5, scene 1.
The grave digger tells Hamlet and Horatio "I came to 't /that day that our last King Hamlet overcame /Fortinbras"(V.i.47–49), "It was that very day that
young Hamlet /was born"(V.i.52–53), and "I have been /sexton here, man and boy, thirty years" (V.i.166–167). While it may seem rather young in
comparison to current ages where people usually live well into their seventies and beyond, it is believed that Hamlet would have lived in the Middle
Ages, a time period in which people were lucky to survive past their twenties. However, it is believed that if people lived past 25, they had a fair

His choice of who would take the throne after his death, while a quick, seemingly spur of the moment decision, was a bit of a good idea. Hamlet
told Horatio "[Fortinbras] has my dying voice" (V.ii.393). Fortinbras, despite being a threat to the kingdom toward the beginning of the play,
understood the inner workings of a country better than any of the other remaining characters at the time of Hamlet's death, simply because
Fortinbras was already taking care of Norway. While it may seem like poor thinking on Hamlet's part to allow someone who previously imposed a
threat to stake claim of the country, the only other living options Hamlet had were people who had no experience being in charge, such as Horatio,
Francisco, or Osric. Hamlet had likely considered all of his options long before his battle with

The Treatment Of The Mentality Of Hamlet And Prince Hamlet
Mental health disorders manifest through every part of the body altering the way a person is able to function. The body reacts the way that the mind
tells it to, and when the mind is corrupt complications arise within the individuals causing potentially life–altering diseases and impulsive actions (Civil
Rights Union, 2016). Hamlet's erratic behaviors have proved that he has gone completely mad. He has depression over his father's death, and his
constant mentions of suicide. He also has borderline personality disorder due to the ghost of his father visiting leaving stress, and anxiety towards
the task of killing his uncle for revenge, being the reason it took Hamlet so long to complete this. We see his feelings of intense emotions of insanity,
love, and shame demonstrated and through this we are able to negate that something was wrong mentally. When we first join Prince Hamlet in the
play we see that his father King Hamlet has passed recently. After King Hamlets passing, his wife Queen Gertrude has already been remarried to
King Hamlet's brother Claudius. Prince Hamlet has carried a deal of built up aggression around from these events, because he feels like Claudius has
brain washed his mother, just so that he can take the thrown. Prince Hamlet also feels like his mother has betrayed his father, and the loss of his father
has been weighing heavily on his mind. As if these events haven't caused Prince Hamlet enough traumatic stress, he ends up meeting his father in ghost

Similarities Between Hamlet And Prince Fortinbras
The King and the Prince Fortinbras are foil characters to the protagonist of the story Hamlet, and his father King Hamlet. In the story King Hamlet
is already dead, so he appears as a ghost or spirit. He appears as a ghost to tell his son that something is not right and it needs to be fixed as soon as
possible. This coming from a ghost is very sicking, so Hamlet listened to the dead King as well as his father. For the other characters above we do not
meet King Fortinbras in the play and only see Prince Fortinbras. very briefly in a scene. Prince Fortinbras enters briefly into the story as being the
winner of Denmark, this means that Hamlet's dynasty is dying and finally is meeting its maker. It is dead. The Prince Fortinbras father is dead

Questioning the Sanity of Hamlet in Shakespeare's Hamlet,...
In William Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, we, as readers, increasingly question the sanity of the protagonist, Hamlet, as the play
continues. His seemingly psychotic banter with the other characters of the play begins to convince us that Hamlet is, indeed, insane. Hamlet,
however, states, "How strange or odd soe'er I bear myself, as I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on" (1.5.171). He

When Horatio and Hamlet see each other for the first time in a long while, they immediately are excited. Hamlet, with his sometimes–sinister blunt
remarks, goes on to tell of how close the wedding and funeral are to each other. "Thrift, thrift, Horatio. The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish
forth the marriage tables" (1.2.179). However, on the opposite end of the spectrum of Hamlet's commentary, his conversations with Polonius are rude
and often pointed. In act 2 scene 2, Hamlet makes fun of Polonius for being old and for his long–winded speeches, but does so with such intelligence
and awareness that Polonius fails to understand what Hamlet is saying at all, thereby thinking Hamlet is simply mad. This differentiation between
playful banter and slanderous remarks show that Hamlet was incredibly mentally alert. More than just being aware of the logic in a situation, Hamlet
is mentally present enough to question even his own thought processes. Hamlet is "in the position of the professional philosopher who criticizes his
thoughts while he is thinking them" (Davis 631). In Hamlet's "to be or not to be" soliloquy (3.1.58), he is questioning his own thinking by debating
with himself about whether or not people dream after death. It takes a sane mind to be able to equally weigh the consequences of something as dark
and intense as suicide.

Pros And Cons Of Prince Hamlet
Would anybody that is truly insane ever actually claim to others that he or she is insane (or pretending to be insane), as Prince Hamlet did to his
trusted companions Horatio and Marcellus? Most likely not, as such a person probably would not be able to realize the extent of his or her delusion
on his or her own, and therefore would stubbornly deny that he or she is in fact crazy. Furthermore, would any truly mad individual ever, if given a
relatively easy opportunity to take his or her revenge against someone who had committed great wrongs against him or her (and therefore caused the
individual to fall into insanity in the first place), take the time to evaluate the pros and cons of taking revenge at that time – as Prince Hamlet did while
his hated uncle Claudius (who had apparently killed Hamlet's father, the king of Denmark, taken the Danish throne for himself, and even married
Hamlet's mother Gertrude in the process) was attempting to pray for forgiveness for his wicked deeds and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Certainly not – a truly insane person would have taken his or her revenge immediately on impulse (of course, unless he or she had become so crazy
that all of his or her memories or senses had been lost) without even fully realizing the details of the situation. These examples, as well as Hamlet's
purposefully disheveled appearances before his former love Ophelia, his playful conversation with Ophelia's father (and Claudius's adviser and
lackey) Polonius, and his actions after his murder of Polonius, seem to show that the madness displayed by Hamlet during several key parts of
Williams Shakespeare's famous tragic play Hamlet was not real, but feigned. Despite this, many common readers (and audiences) of Shakespeare's
Hamlet are still often left believing that the titular Prince Hamlet's supposedly feigned "antic disposition" is actually genuine

Insanity In Prince Hamlet And The Real Madness Of Ophelia
In most of the tragedies written by William Shakespeare there are some characteristics that distinguish it from the others. One is a woman with
abnormal mental conditions, such as insanity, others.

APPEARANCE vs. REALITY IN "THE PRINCE" AND "HAMLET"
3. Reality and appearances, or if you prefer, being and acting, are important themes for both Machiavelli and Shakespeare. Why? How do their
perspectives on this subject agree or differ?
APPEARANCE vs. REALITY IN "THE PRINCE" AND "HAMLET"
One of the most fundamental questions in philosophy is the appearance vs. reality. We find ourselves asking the question of what is genuinely
"real," and what is viewed merely as just an "appearance," and not real? It becomes difficult when we assume there is a difference in the two to
determine which is which. Generally, what we label as "real" is regarded as external and eternal. What we refer to as just an appearance is regarded as
temporary and internal. Many early as well as modern day authors use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although he appears to be a confident father he does not trust his son to go away on his own. Furthermore, Polonius adds to the theme of appearance
versus reality by ordering Ophelia to stop seeing Hamlet. He lies to her by telling her that Hamlet does not love her, he only lusts for her. Two of
Hamlet's closest friends from his childhood Rosencrantz and Guildenstern can as well be viewed as liars who become very deceitful to Hamlet.
After being asked by the king to find out what is bothering Hamlet, the two go to Hamlet pretending to see him as a friend, but are in reality just
obeying the king's orders. When they ask what is troubling Hamlet, they become insincere, and almost sound as though they had rehearsed what it
was they were going to say. Hamlet noticed that the boys were told to do this and states, "A dream itself is but a shadow" (Hamlet 73). Hamlet then
realized that his own friend were not in reality any friends at all. The king again sends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to apologize for their behavior but
Hamlet noticed their intentions yet again and simply insulted them. Hamlet's supposed friends greatly add to the theme of appearance vs. reality.
The last character is Claudius, the brother of the deceased king, who was crowned the new king of Denmark is viewed as an honest and honorable
man. As seen in a speech given by Claudius in the presence of the council in Act One Scene Two, he

Prince Hamlet Versus Machiavelli's Prince Essay
Prince Hamlet Versus Machiavelli's Prince
The Prince is a celebrated and highly controversial piece of work by the Italian aristocrat Niccolo Machiavelli. His work is a summation of all the
qualities a prince must have in order to remain in his position. Machiavelli supports the idea that a prince use his power for the ultimate benefit of all,
but he also does not condemn the use of any unpleasant means in order for the prince to maintain his power. His ideas both compare and contrast to the
methods used by Prince Hamlet of Denmark in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Hamlet, as we know, struggles mightily to maintain his position as the prince,
and one must wonder if this is due to some of the highly essential qualities outlined by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning, Hamlet struggles to remain good at all times, but this only causes him extreme anguish. Hamlet must soon come to disregard his
sense of morality in order to save himself, which is essentially exactly what Machiavelli professed one must do. He shows little remorse in killing
Polonius, and he turns against his old friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Still, one has to believe that Hamlet is not without a conscience, because
his desire for revenge is fulfilled only at the very end as he himself dies.
Another point made within Machiavelli's writings is that a prince must strive to avoid hatred, yet at the same time, be feared by all those around him.
Hamlet most certainly achieved the first goal, for I believe he was highly regarded by all his subjects, but he rarely acted in a way to inspire fear in
those around him. Indeed, Polonius, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstem had no trouble plotting against him, because they had no fear that he would turn
against them in a violent or malicious manner. On the other hand, I believe Hamlet was a threat to them once he began acting so insanely, because his
actions were much more unpredictable. A key point is that men are fickle and constantly changing, as demonstrated by Hamlet himself, so one must be
prepared for any turn of events.
Machiavelli goes on to stress that while it can be beneficial to appear a good and honorable man, a prince must always be prepared to resort to

The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William...
Somewhere between the years of 1599 and 1602, William Shakespeare wrote his longest, most influential and powerful tragedy, The Tragedy of Hamlet,
Prince of Denmark. Set in the Kingdom of Denmark, the play stages the revenge that a young prince seeks against his uncle for murdering his father,
inheriting the throne, and subsequently marrying his mother.
Prince Hamlet, a university student, is an extremely philosophical and thoughtful character. When his father the King of Denmark dies, Hamlet returns
home only to be presented with evidence that suggests his uncle Claudius may have been responsible for his father's murder. In the initial acts of the
tragedy, Hamlet seeks to prove his uncle's guilt and contemplates all of his actions and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He does not believe that it is truly his father. Even after seeing the ghost himself, Hamlet remains cynical, although he does in fact emotional upon
seeing it. The ghost tells Hamlet that his brother killed him in order to steal both his wife and the throne. Hamlet becomes confused after seeing his
father's ghost and is unsure of how he should react. However, he vows to seek revenge against his uncle, although he refuses to do so without first
having sufficient evidence to prove his uncle's guilt. A few months later, with the help of actors from his university in Wittenberg, Hamlet decides to
stage a play of his father's poisoning for Claudius. Hamlet believes that Claudius' reaction to the play will either confirm or deny his guilt. In act
three, Hamlet returns to the theme of suicide. He examines the moral and immoral aspects of suicide in a world that he considers to be so anguished
and corrupt in his most famous soliloquy: To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? –To die, –to sleep, –
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, –'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, –to sleep; –
To sleep: perchance to dream... (III.i.58–67)

Prince Hamlet Influence
After his father's murder in Shakespeare's Hamlet, the prince begins his downward spiral in which his mental health, relationships, and self–respect all
begin to deteriorate rapidly. Although his father's ghost initially commands him to avenge his murder, Prince Hamlet interprets revenge on his own to
mean an "eye for an eye" retaliation against his uncle. This indicates Hamlet's ability to make his own decisions to some degree, and leads into the
idea that he is more influenced by his own thoughts than those of the ghost. As the play progresses (and Hamlet more often loses the ability to steer
his own country and his own mind) Hamlet's desires to regain autonomy over his actions appear to grow stronger than his need to take revenge. For this

Most notably, Hamlet admires Fortinbras ability to invade another country for "Two thousand souls and twenty thousand ducats"(4.4, 24). This
contrasts heavily with Hamlet's own inability to avenge something as important as his father's murder, which he feels makes him seem cowardly.
Hamlet understands that "Rightly to be great Is... to find quarrel in a straw when honor's at the stake."(4.4, 53–56) Although Hamlet has been
influenced by another's actions here, he is deciding that he wants to protect his honor and stand up for something in which he believes. This reveals
why Hamlet decides to take such harsh actions of revenge, since he is trying to prove to himself that he is capable of murder in the first place.
Hamlet's admiration for Fortinbras's abilities demonstrates his respect for the other prince and helps to illustrate the notion that Hamlet may want to be
similar to Fortinbras (and eventually gain his own independent stature). Additionally, Hamlet realizes that man's "capability and godlike reason"(4.4,
38) is a sacred gift which he feels cannot be wasted. For this reason, Hamlet is able to convince himself that he must act on his wishes to murder
Claudius, and demonstrates his individual desire to act in a way that demonstrates his own abilities. This leads him to continue his pursuit of murder.

The Demise Of Prince Hamlet In William Shakespeare's Play
Every tragedy has a hero that succumbs to an internal flaw. Hamlet is no exception to this rule. In this infamous play by Shakespeare, the main
character Prince Hamlet is troubled with the task of avenging his father's death. He is approached by his father's ghost who tells the story of his
deceitful murder. After he finishes the story, theghost asks Prince Hamlet to kill his brother and murderer King Claudius. Prince Hamlet's obsession
with the perfect plan for revenge is what ultimately brings about his demise. This cause for a perfectly seamless plan resulted in stalling the end
result of killing King Claudius and gave the King time to devise a plan of his own. Directly after talking to the ghost of his father, Prince Hamlet
formulates a scheme to murder his uncle. During this time Hamlet seems very eager to begin with the first steps of avenging his father's death. Once
the ghost leaves Hamlet is talking to himself and he says " So, uncle, there you are. Now to my word" which indicates a sense of urgency and desire
to fulfill his father's wishes by any means necessary (I.v.111). These emotions only last for a short moment considering that they were likely generated
from a rush of adrenaline that came with seeing a ghost of his dead father. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Prince Hamlet : The Leading Role In William Shakespeare's...
Prince Hamlet, the leading role in William Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, is a dark, and brooding figure in the play. When his father, the previous King
Hamlet, is murdered by his brother, Hamlet's uncle, Claudius, Hamlet struggles to climb out of his grief. Two months after the murder, Hamlet's mother
marries with Claudius, who then becomes King of Denmark. With little understanding and support from his mother and stepfather/uncle, Hamlet
struggles to heal in a healthy manner; thus, he develops suicidal tendencies, as the wounds created by his father's death simply grow with his negative
feelings. There are multiple instances throughout the play where Hamlet questions the value of his life ("For who would bear the whips and scorns of
time,/ [...] When he himself might his quietus make/ With a bare bodkin?" [III.I.78, 83–84]), and as a result, contemplates suicide ("To be or not to be –
that is the question" [III.I.64]). However, due to his fear of the afterlife ("For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,/When we have shuffled off
this mortal coil,/Must give us pause." [III.I.74–76]), and loyalty to the Christian belief that suicide is a sin (he wishes that the "Everlasting had not fixed
His canon 'gainst self–slaughter" [I.II.135–136]), Hamlet remains idle, unable to act upon his deepest desires, which so happens to be his biggest fear
as well.

This is an excellent reason for Hamlet to pretend that he is mad. He is too much of a coward to simply go and kill Claudius and by acting crazy he
will gain valuable information. While he acts mad, he is hiding his intensions of his plan to murder Claudius. Claudius see's Hamlet as no threat
because he has gone mad. Hamlet in fact is also presented as very clever to come with the plan to act mad. By acting insane Hamlet will confuse
his enemies and at the same time hide his intensions which is very ingenious but at the same time much more time consuming then simply going
and murdering Claudius without having the need to put on an act on madness. Even though Hamlet has put on this act of madness, in time, he will
be confused to weather he is really insane or sane and conform to being mad. While being in the act of madness, Hamlet is able to get away with
things that he normally would not be able to get away with such as swearing and being very disrespectful towards Ophelia, Claudius, Polonius and
Gertrude. Hamlet is also unable to take responsibility for the murder of Polonius, blaming his madness and using that as an excuse for the killing of

In The Morality of Hamlet–`Sweet Prince' or `Arrant Knave'?, Patrick Cruttwell addresses whether Hamlet is good or evil. He states that the answer
to this questions depends on which set of morals people judge his actions under. Either they judge him based on Christian morals or Pagan morals. In
addition, he states that this play, like so many other pieces of literature, has grown into a myth. He also states that is a paramount to answer to what
degree Hamlet he was actually mad and his true motives for avenging his father before making a judgment about his morality. Additionally, he brings

Also, he brings up the flaws present in Shakespeare's own writing regarding his inconsistency with addressing the feigned madness aspect of his play.
Moreover, there is an inconsistency with the way Shakespeare portrays Hamlet in contrast with all of his other neurotic characters who create their own
fictionalized realities, are viciously antisocial, and have a hatred of everything around them. Cruttwell also brings up the intense situations that Hamlet
has to endure, including the death of his father, incesiouc marriage of his mother, and the appearance of his father's ghost, which warrant any degree of
emotion. It is then inferred from this that he is responsible for his actions and therefore has taken it upon himself to revenge his father by any means
necessary out of duty. He then brings up two possible interpretations of Hamlet's revenge. Firstly, it has been argued that he based his actions on the
honor code of his times and that audiences of Shakespeare's time would have understood this. The other interpretation is that the ghost was a
representation of Hamlet giving into temptation and therefore his actions were not driven by

thoughts while he is thinking them" (Davis 631). In Hamlet's "to be or not to be" soliloquy (3.1.58), he is questioning his own thinking by debating
with himself about whether or not people dream after death. It takes a sane mind to be able to equally weigh the consequences of something as dark
and intense as suicide.

Comparing Fortune In Hamlet And The Prince
Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, is a play about a prince who needs to get revenge for the murder of his father. The Prince, written by
NiccolГІ Machiavelli, is a treatise on how to take and hold on to political power. Both Hamlet and The Prince contain the concept of fortune as a
common theme throughout each work. Fortune is talked about in similar ways in both, including how fortune is a woman, how much control fortune
has over people, and how fortune is like water. Fortune is associated with the goddess Fortuna from Roman mythology in both Hamlet and The Prince.
Fortuna is the Roman goddess of luck, fate, and fortune. Fortuna is referred to in a sexual manner by both Shakespeare and Machiavelli. In Hamlet
she is referred to as a strumpet: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Shakespeare 121)
Again, Fortune is called a strumpet, as First Player pleads with all the other gods to destroy her wheel, sending the hub of the wheel rolling down from
heaven into hell. Fortune is also personified in The Prince:
My opinion on the matter is this: it's better to be impulsive than cautious; fortune is female and if you want to stay on top of her you have to slap and
thrust. (Machiavelli 136–137)
Machiavelli is using sex as a metaphor to say that to subdue Fortune, one must be impulsive and assert their dominance over her. Hamlet believes he
leaves too much up to fortune because he thinks too much without taking enough action. In his "to be or not to be" soliloquy, he reflects on how he
overthinks things, saying "conscience does make cowards of us all". Hamlet wishes he wasn't like this and admires people like Horatio and Fortinbras
for taking action and not letting fortune control them. Hamlet praises Horatio for the way he deals with fortune:
A man that fortune's buffets and rewards
Hast ta'en with equal thanks: and blessed are those
Whose blood and judgment are so well commingled
That they are not a pipe for Fortune's finger
To sound what stop she please. (Shakespeare

The Great Prince Of Denmark, Hamlet, By William Shakespeare
The Elizabethan era consisted of a time where women were viewed as minorities in society and were often thought to have been devised in the weaker
image of men. Being given limited political, economical and social freedom led to their diminutive role in literature. In contrast to this degrading trend,
Shakespeare introduced femininity in a new light. He created female characters who contradict the stereotypes of his time, impacting both the plot and
surrounding characters of his plays. One of his most famous tragedies, Hamlet, revolves around the great prince of Denmark, Hamlet, who encounters
the apparition of his deceased father, the former king. The ghost asks that Hamlet seeks revenge upon Claudius, his uncle and new father, for it was
he who murdered him and seduced the queen, as a plan to gain top status in society. Faking madness, Hamlet strives to kill Claudius, and although
successful, many other lives, including his own, pass in the meanwhile . Ophelia, the daughter of the king's top advisors, finds herself caught in the
middle of this situation as people assume Hamlet has gone mad out of pure love for her. Gertrude, Hamlet's mother, soon faces the consequences of
participating in her husband's murder. Despite the women in Shakespeare's Hamlet being classified as fragile and submissive, staying true to the
beliefs of the time period, they are exceptionally significant figures in the progression of the plot in this bloody tragedy. This is demonstrated by

The Transformation Of Prince Shakespeare 's ' Hamlet '
The Transformation of Prince Hamlet from Good to Evil Nobody is born evil. Though there are many evil people in the world today, becoming evil is
the combination of multiple events that take place. Just like Hamlet, the transformation from good to evil is very common. Although it is different for
every individual, this process is easier for some to go through than it is for others. In Hamlet's case, the events that slowly change him prove to be
quite unbearable. It is people that mean the most to him that lead him to change, not because he wants to, but because he has to. They cause Hamlet to
lose his mind, drive him insane, and in the end, it was a loss for everyone that was involved.
From the beginning of the play, Hamlet is labelled as a heavy hearted and unhappy man. This is seen as "Hamlet's Transformation" as the King called
it. He has not always been like this. In Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, Prince Hamlet experiences many dilemmas that lead him to revenge and his
transformation form good to evil. Shakespeare displays that revenge leads to insanity. Hamlet's mother, Gertrude, Hamlet's uncle also known as his
step–father, Claudius, and Hamlet's dead father, King Hamlet, all drive Hamlet to lose his mind and become insane. This change in Hamlet is brought
to him by devastating and life changing events that have recently happened, and did not only cause a mental reaction, but specifically a moral reaction.
Gertrude pushes Hamlet beyond his breaking point and puts

Revenge In J. Budziszewski's Prince Hamlet
Revenge is a thing that seems to always be in style. It is constantly being seen in real life, hollywood, and literature. People are constantly on edge
plotting their revenge or debating if they should even do it. Some people's conscience is formed too pure to take revenge, but in time it can be turned
erroneous due to events and newfound subconscious desires, as in Prince Hamlet's case.
From the moment humans come out of the womb, their conscience begins to form. As John Locke describe with tabula rasa, the mind is a blank slate
and experience fills it in. This means that when someone is born their conscience is neither good nor bad, but from that moment on, outside factors are
influencing it. Depending on one's upbringing or environment, they are being taught either good morals or bad ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Budziszewski writes, "Once a wrong is done, the next wrong comes more easily. On this view conscience is mainly a restraint, a resistance, a
passive barrier. It doesn't so much drive us on as hold us back, and when persistently attacked, the restraining wall gets thinner and thinner and finally
disappears. Often this explanation is combined with another: that conscience comes from culture, that it is built up in us from outside." Many others
agree with his view that with time the barrier that shields from the bad can be broken down if wrongs are constantly being done either by the person
or involving the person. In Hamlet's situation, when his father was murdered he wanted to take revenge on Claudius, but he could not carry through
with it at first due to his conscience being too pure. However, as time went on the devil in his conscience started taking over the angel in it by all the
little details that happened (the mouse trap, sending off to England, etc.). These events built up to turn his conscience erroneous enough to allow him
to carry through with his need for revenge. Events can take a toll on you psychologically and socially, but your biology will always remain the

The Tragedy of Prince Hamlet
King Hamlet's death left a mark on everyone in the castle, after a while that all began to change when Claudius married Hamlet's mother. Hamlet felt
that everybody should be mourning his father's death, and he felt betrayed by the sudden marriage. Hamlet becomes mad once he sees his father as a
ghost and seeks to avenge his father's death, not knowing that this would lead to his death. The grief of King Hamlet's death and the reactions of his
loved ones changed Prince Hamlet's life by showing signs of post–traumatic stress disorder. King Hamlet's death left a big mark on his son Prince
Hamlet, he was Hamlets idol. Hamlet wanted to commit suicide because he was still mourning the death of his father, but he didn't because he
thought of the consequences of purgatory, where he would not go to heaven or hell but remain as a lost soul in the world ("Hamlet's") These
reactions relate to PTSD because Hamlet cannot let his father go and he also suffers by the reactions of his loved ones who are calm and happy for
Gertrude and Claudius. Less than two months after his father's death, Hamlet noticed the reactions of his loved ones, his mother married King
Hamlet's brother Claudius whom became king after King Hamlet died, no one had an issue with their marriage the only one who was disturbed by
the marriage was Prince Hamlet and he was disturbed by the reactions of his loved ones and everybody else. As the marriage

The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare was written in 1599 during the Elizabethan era. The Elizabethan era was also
known as the "golden age" because of its developments and changes. The Awakening by Kate Chopin was published in 1899, which was the Victorian
era. The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and the Awakening were written many years apart and also in different literary eras, but they share
many similar themes. The Awakening and Hamlet expresses love as a major theme. In both literary works, it is presented in the same forms and
different forms. In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the theme of love is expressed through many characters and relationships within
the play. One way it is expressed is as tragic love. Tragic love is expressed in King Hamlet and Gertrude. It is tragic love because their relationship
together was very short lived due to the temper of King Hamlets' brother, Claudius. Another way that tragic love is expressed is through the
relationship of Prince Hamlet and Ophelia. That is exemplified as tragic love because Hamlet deeply loves Ophelia, but Ophelia's father Polonis
doesn't care for Hamlet and doesn't was his daughter to pursue him because he thinks that Hamlet will just hurt her and since Hamlet is the Prince
of Denmark, Ophelia doesn't have the social standing to be good enough as the potential queen since she is just a daughter of a courtier and
Polonis doesn't want his daughter hurt. This is also expressed as a tragic love because they cannot end up together because while Hamlet is away
in England Ophelia drowns, but hamlet doesn't find out until he comes back and is spying on her funeral. The theme of tragic love can also be
expressed with Laertes and Ophelia, since Laertes is Ophelia's brother he wants to protect her and at Ophelia's funeral Laertes asked the doctor
"Must there no more be done?" and the doctor basically says we can't do anything else sine she took her own life, but Laertes wants anything and

Character Comparison : Titus Andronicus And Prince Hamlet
Essay One
Character comparison: Titus Andronicus and Prince Hamlet
The two major characters, Hamlet and Titus of Shakespearean plays, Hamlet and Titus Andronicus are characteristic in terms of considering revenge
and aspiring to avenge the murders. However, the two are quite different in their approach toward revenge. This is due to the fact that two protagonist
in their respective plays consider revenge differently since Titus is anxious to avenge the murder andHamlet delays his decision of taking revenge while
seeking other alternatives to revenge such as suicide.
Therefore, the theme of procrastination in Hamlet is the cause of delay in taking the revenge of Hamlet's father's murder. However, the theme of long
delays and seeking alternative to revenge such as in the form of suicide while c considering it less sinful as compare to revenge from the aspect of the
Christian theology also discloses that Hamlet is sensible and even in the times of emotional instability, he does not fall beneath what is humanlike
behavior. On the contrary, Titus does not show such emotional savvy while expression grave concern and shows eagerness to avenge the murder
(Burwick 24).
In fact, the two characters in Shakespeare's plays are very significant since their stance against the damaged honor is similar. Titus and Hamlet have
their own individual moral standpoints on taking revenge in which one display emotional outbursts that is Titus and another shows maturity of thought

Why Is Prince Hamlet Insane
Is Prince Hamlet insane?
If a person walks into a room in a suit, they look professional. If a male walks into a room holding another males hand, he is presumed to be gay. So
if a young man walks into a room, and he wears sorrow and anger on his face, he must be insane. Yet, if you change your perspective that man wearing
a suit may look professional, until he opens his mouth. The male holding the others hand is not in fact gay, that is his brother.Hamlet is ideally
pretending to be insane, but is his insanity really an act? That question is answered not at first glance, but at first in depth observation. In some
instances of this play Hamlet does convince many that he is insane.
To begin, in some instances his actions are to great, too bizarre to be an act, so in some moments the young prince may be a bit off his rocker, but
who does not seem a little odd once in a while. After seeing this play acted out, I came to the conclusion, Hamlet is not in fact mad he is simply
human. Some reasons I think the young prince Hamlet is not insane are, he shows compassion towards many people; especially the lady Ophelia. The
turmoil he has suffered would make any normal person behave at least semi abnormally, and he works through his emotions in an abnormal way to us,

Prince Hamlet As A Tragic Hero In Shakespeare's Hamlet
As defined by Aristotle, A tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his or her own destruction. In the
play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare, Prince Hamlet is the tragic hero. Prince Hamlet can even be considered a quintessential tragic hero due to
how closely he relates to Aristotle's definition. Initially he has noble motives which were to avenge his father's death but by the end, his flaws and bad
decisions lead him to his death. The fact that Prince Hamlet's best trait is also his downfall makes him one of the most tragic heroes in Shakespeare's
work. In these ways and more, Prince Hamlet fulfills Aristotle's definition of a tragic hero.
First, as Aristotle indicates, a tragic hero must face a serious decision that they have to make. Prince Hamlet has to make many very serious
decisions throughout the play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare, starting in act III. The first decision Prince Hamlet has to make is whether or not
he should kill his uncle Claudius. At the end of act III scene iii Prince Hamlet plans to kill Claudius but walks in on him while he appears to be
praying. Prince Hamlet believes that if he kills Claudius while in prayer, Claudius will go to heaven and will not be punished for murdering his
father. This decision is crucial in the play because it causes a chain reaction of events. Another important decision Prince Hamlet makes is choosing to
fight Laertes. In act IV, scene vii Claudius and Laertes plan to lure Prince Hamlet into a dull when he returns to Denmark. When he arrives, Prince
Hamlet goes to the churchyard with Horatio. Soon the funeral procession for Ophelia enters the churchyard. Prince Hamlet rushes to her grave and
begins arguing with Laertes. This argument leads to Prince Hamlet agreeing to the dual. This is a serious decision because it ultimately leads to his
death.
Another way in which Prince Hamlet meets Aristotle's tragic hero definition lies in his error of judgement. Prince Hamlet's first error of judgement
occurs when he kills Polonius after mistaking him for Claudius. In act III scene iv, the queen and Polonius wait for Prince Hamlet's arrival. Polonius
plans to hide and listen to the queen and Prince Hamlet's argument

Hamlet is the tale of a juvenile prince determined to reveal the
truth about his father's recent quietus. Hamlet's uncle ,Claudius, marries his mother the queen, and therefore, takes the throne. In Act 1 (scene 5),
Hamlet is told by the apparition of his dead father that it was his uncle, who murdered him. The theme that remains consistent throughout this
tribulation is appearance versus reality. The characters introduced throughout the play, appear to be caring and honest, but in reality are nothing but
evil. They deceitfully hide behind two–faced mask of integrity. Four main unfaithful characters which are found to be disguised as right–minded are

He speaks strong, influential words, but does not speak completely truthfully. Polonius gives his son blessing to leave Denmark: "And borrowing dulls
the edge of husbandry. This above all: to thine own self be true,And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell; my blessing season this in thee!".
Within this speech to his son Laertes, Polonius advises him not borrow from others, to stay true to himself, and not to lie. Although, Polonius appears
to be a caring and trusting father, he sends a spy after Laertes to follow and keep up with him. This demonstrates his distrust for Laertes. He is not a
confident father, in which he is shown to be. His speech was rehearsed to be give the effect that he is caring and is trustworthy of his son.
Polonius begins adding more to the theme of appearance versus reality when he orders his daughter, Ophelia, from seeing Hamlet. He mischievously lies
to her, claiming that
Hamlet does not actually love her, that he only grew lust for her: "Ay, springs to catch woodcocks. I do know, When the blood burns, how prodigal the
soul". Throughout the play, Polonius is taken as a warm and tender parent. But behind his two–faced mask, he is a lying and manipulative person.
Polonius obviously contributes to the theme of appearance versus reality by illustrating that his moral (righteous) appearance is not true in nature,
because underneath the "mask" is someone completely

Machiavelli states that "it is necessary for a prince, who wishes to maintain himself, to learn how not to be good, and use this knowledge and not use

king mad and eventually kill him, is what he thinks he must do in order to set things right. Hamlet struggles to maintain his position as prince. Perhaps
he lacks the essential qualities of a prince outlined by Machiavelli.

trappings and the suits of woe." (Hamlet, I, ii., 76–86)
Hamlet tells her in this quote, that his feelings are true, and that he does in fact grieve for his father. His outward self is just like his inward self. He
reveals this again later, in his first soliloquy, when he shows his disgust for the "seeming world," in which everything is "weary, stale, flat and
unprofitable." (Hamlet, I, ii., 133)
Hamlet must soon come to disregard his sense of morality in order to save himself, and he does, proving the second part of Machiavelli's quote:
"Therefore, it is necessary for a prince, who wishes to maintain himself, to learn how not to be good ..." The first signs of this appear when the

then agrees that he will insert the speech written by Hamlet into his own speech, on the night of the play. In his soliloquy, Hamlet mentions how he will

Hamlet as a Tragedy by William Shakespeare
1.1. Brief Introduction to Tragedy: Greek and English:
Elizabethan tragedy is traced back to Greek tragedy, since Greeks are said to have pioneered the Western knowledge, be it Science, Arts, or
Humanities–not necessarily Technology. The rich contribution of Greek dramatists like Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus and Aristophanes, is
noteworthy, towards the development of both Roman and English Drama. Though Roman Drama could not thrive much as to invite the attention of
Western audience, but English Drama excelled in Elizabethan Age (due to the royal patronage), with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, Shakespearean tragedy radiates with strong characterization–round, of course–"Character is Destiny". Sixthly, Pity and Fear for
Catharsis are perhaps common in both the tradition of tragedies. And, lastly, the role of chorus (highlighting the past and intimating the future–pivotal
to the plot), being common in Greek and English Tragedies, make them closer to each other. 1.2.William Shakespeare's Hamlet:
Hamlet by William Shakespeare is believed to be the Crown of Tragedies because of its thematic heterogeneity, stylistic features, rich characterization
and appeal to Human Heart. A heart rending tragedy that overwhelms with revenge, filial love and introspection–explicitly exposed in four major
Soliloquies by Hamlet, the prince. The said drama is equally fascinating to the students of history, philosophy, psychology, literature and perhaps many
more. Though, it has flaws in its plot being unsystematic and less causative for the fulfilment of Organic Whole, yet the overall/final effect is quite
impressive from artistic and literary viewpoints.
Speeches of Polonius, Ophelia, Horatio, Claudius, and particularly the Hamlet's glorify the drama; better illustrates and beautifies the tragedy, fulfilling
the fundamentals of tragedy. Every character contributes, shares and cares, and above all, involved in the main action–action being the soul of drama!

Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark, By William Shakespeare
The famous tragedy entitled Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, often abbreviated to Hamlet and written at the turn of the seventeenth century, was the
playwright William Shakespeare's longest play and among the most influential works to exist in English literature. The play dramatizes the poisonous
intents of the demonically brilliant king of Denmark, Claudius, a man so driven by greed and lust for his brother's, King Hamlet's, throne, wife and
supremacy that he commits the ultimate act of fratricide, consequently inheriting the "primal eldest curse" of Cain and Abel. His toxic act affected his
relationships with numerous other characters, and eventually led to several of their demises. Prince Hamlet, son of the late King Hamlet and Claudius'
nephew and step–son, was one such example of a character directly affected by Claudius' venomous ways; he became suicidal after his father's
unnatural death. This essay will examine the poisonous nature of King Claudius, the inadvertent penalties of his deeds and Hamlet's extensive use of
the trope of poison.
"In the complex web of human destinies, where so many lives are meshed intricately together, the freely chosen actions of one individual may breed
damaging, entirely unforeseeable effects in the lives of countless anonymous others." (On Evil, Terry Eagleton, p. 33). Eagleton, a prominent British
literary theorist and critic, is essentially saying here that one's actions can have a profound effect on many people and situations and can

Analysis Of Prince Hamlet By William Shakespeare
Jean Jacques Rousseau stated that: "man is born free; but everywhere he lives in chains". This suggests humankind is only free at the moment of
birth and thereafter they live their lives chained down by forces working to hold them back from being who they truly are. Every man and women
are shaped not by their freedoms, but by their limitations. This is evident in all types of literature and from observation of the world we live in now.
However, I have chosen to analyze Prince Hamlet in Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Winston Smith in 1984 by George Orwell and lastly The Man
in The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Throughout the entirety of Hamlet. Hamlet is shaped into a vengeful murderer unable to love or to act sanely due
to his father 's ghost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He then goes on to justify the murder by saying "A bloody deed. Almost as bad, good mother, As kill a king and marry with his brother."(3.4, 33) this
shows that Hamlet has become completely discounted from the real world and only care about revenge for his father because of the insanity
brought on from the chain of his father 's murder. 1984 is similar to Hamlet in the way that the main character Winston Smith is also chained down
by the loss of family, guilt and a longing for love and freedom. During the second part of 1984 Winston has a dream about the days when his
mother and sister were still alive and the three of them were seeking shelter in air raid bunkers when a chocolate ration was distributed, Winston
however thought all the chocolate should be for him and steal the chocolate from his little sister and runs, his mother yells after him: "Winston,

Comparing Prince Hamlet In The T. V Play
Both Prince hamlet in the play Hamlet, and Clay in the T.V. series Thirteen Reasons Why, have ways of dealing with loss, seeking the truth, and getting
revenge. Both characters deal with a great amount of grief, hurt, and confusion. These two characters are alike in many ways throughout the play, and
the T.V series. In the playHamlet, Prince Hamlet's father dies by the hand of his uncle who goes by the name of Claudius. Hamlet is confused, hurt,
and depressed, and he doesn't know how to deal with what he's feeling after the loss/murder of his father Prince Hamlet. "O, that this too too sullied
flesh would melt, Thaw and resolve itself into a dew, Or that the Everlasting had not fix'd His canon 'gainst self–slaughter! O God, God, How weary, ...

After Prince Hamlet discovered that Claudius truly did murder his father, he wants revenge. "Now might I do it pat, now he is praying, And now I'll
do 't. [He draws his sword.] And so he goes to heaven, And so am I revenged. That would be scann'd: A villain kills my father, and for that, I, his sole
son, do this same villain send To heaven." (3.3.77–83) Hamlet has devised a plan to get revenge on the man who killed his father, but he is hesitant. In
this quote, Hamlet is about to strike Claudius with the sword, when he realizes that Claudius is praying. If he really is praying, then he goes to
heaven. How would that be fair that the man who killed Hamlet's father goes to heaven? So Hamlet doesn't kill Claudius. In the show Thirteen
Reasons Why, Clay goes through a series of times when he tries to get revenge on the people who hurt Hannah. Clay doesn't really know what to

Down's window. Tyler was said to be a creep in Hannah's tape, he exposed pictures of hannah. Clay confronts and blames multiple people as he goes

Hamlet, The Prince Of Denmark

  • 1. Hamlet, The Prince Of Denmark Hamlet is one of William Shakespeare 's most iconic plays about a tragedy. The play begins with Hamlet mourning the death of his father and ends with a hefty amount of corpses. The cause of the multiple deaths may be from Hamlet 's decisions that formed from questioning that which is unknown to him. Throughout the Shakespearean play, Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, as well as the audience, are placed in a constant state of uncertainty. While Hamlet grieves his father 's death many things start to unfold and create questions for the audience and Hamlet to queries such as the existence of his father 's ghost, death and mortality and lastly more for the audience, the mental state of Hamlet himself. The theme of uncertainty challenges Hamlet in his choices as well as how uncertainty brings out deeper and more complex thoughts for him to explore. Through the lines that are read and the visual shown through the actors expressions and wardrobe in the play, we see start see how the uncertainty changes and morphs into different decisions of how Hamlet chooses to live which ultimately cause his demise. . The play begins after his father's death and it starts with a tone of fear this is because Hamlet is left as a broken piece of himself from the loss of his dad all while there is a ghost roaming the estate. The Ghost is or claims to be of the late King Hamlet or otherwise known as the prince 's father. From this encounter, Hamlet 's life begins to unravel. The Ghost claims that his ... • 2. Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark is by far one of the best known of William Shakespeare's works and, may well be the most famous English–language play ever written. Categorized as one of Shakespeare's "later tragedies," it has developed a reputation as a difficult work to analyze. The Character of Hamlet is, perhaps, one of the most compelling characters to ever rise from the pages of English literature. He has been subjected to numerous interpretations and studies over the centuries, his actions thoughts analyzed and analyzed again. And this, probably more than anything else, is the reason for Hamlet's enduring appeal. One of the biggest arguments in Hamlet's character is his madness; whether he is pretending or if he really goes insane. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Somehow, even in the short amount of time the people have had to morn the King's death, Claudius convinces everyone that it is time to move on and put the past behind. Gertrude is the mother of prince Hamlet and the new wife of his uncle. Her marriage to Claudius largely accounts for the melancholy and cynicism of her son, who violently attacks her for her lust. She appears with her new husband, the King, and he justifies their marriage to the court. Later she tries to talk Hamlet out of dwelling on his father, and into seeing the new king as a father. The Ghost of Hamlet's father is probably the most mysterious character of them all. It is fully covered in armor and takes the form of the ex–King on Denmark. This spirit has twice appeared to Marcellus and Bernardo (both castle guards) before they see it a third time in the presence of the skeptical Horatio. It appears again to Hamlet, Horatio, and Marcellus. Hamlet follows, and it tells him how he was poisoned by Claudius, who had already seduced Hamlet's mother. The spirit then enjoins Hamlet to revenge his murder, but leave his mother to the punishment of heaven. The ghost appears again in act III, scene iv when Hamlet, having made no attempt to kill Claudius, seems to be on the point of killing his mother. It is said by Rowe Flatter in his book "Hamlet's Father," that Shakespeare himself acted the part of the Ghost of King Hamlet. Polonius is the chief advisor to King ... • 3. Prince Hamlet Most people can agree, Hamlet is one of the most memorable and famous plays in existence. Prince Hamlet himself is a main contribution to that fact. After his father's death, mother's near instant remarriage, and apparent ghost of his father asking for Hamlet to avenge him, his character is definitely pushed to its limit. The young prince of Denmark is driven to madness and plots his revenge through until his death. He doesn't allow himself to be close to anyone or share his true thoughts and feelings with anyone but the audience, and on occasion, Horatio, who can be identified as Hamlet's likely true friend. Hamlet was unable to finish college due to the wishes of his mother and has no career or anything to look forward to despite being the future king. "Hidden beneath Hamlet's bitter cynicism and cruel words is a desire to embrace those that fate dictates he must despise." (Mabillard) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though Sir Author Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes because of his own genuine hatred for the character, he commits suicide because of the gets himself in. (His suicide was also faked, but that's a whole different story). Hamlet and Holmes are both manipulative and intelligent, yet lack empathy and other certain emotion. They both seem uninterested in relationships with women; yet use them to their advantage– Hamlet definitely takes advantage of Ophelia and his mother, while Sherlock does the same with Irene Adler, Molly Hooper in the BBC show, and other various women. Though Sherlock has been recreated in modern times, he isn't as sexist as Hamlet, who states "Frailty, thy name is woman!" (1.2.146) and shows his distaste for most women in the play. Another quality the two possess is best explained by Hart in his Sherlock Holmes analysis essay is "the character so burdened by genius they're unable to cope with their own humanity." It works for both characters and defines them extremely well. The two are remarkably ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Prince Hamlet Research Paper The likeability of Prince Hamlet would greatly affect the measure of his success as the monarch of Denmark. According to King Claudius, "[Hamlet]'s loved of the distracted multitude" (IV.iii.4). Due to Hamlet being well liked by the subjects of Denmark, his uncle was unable to send him to jail. Prince Hamlet was only 30 during most or all of the play, knowledge that the reader learns during the conversation with the gravedigger in Act 5, scene 1. The grave digger tells Hamlet and Horatio "I came to 't /that day that our last King Hamlet overcame /Fortinbras"(V.i.47–49), "It was that very day that young Hamlet /was born"(V.i.52–53), and "I have been /sexton here, man and boy, thirty years" (V.i.166–167). While it may seem rather young in comparison to current ages where people usually live well into their seventies and beyond, it is believed that Hamlet would have lived in the Middle Ages, a time period in which people were lucky to survive past their twenties. His choice of who would take the throne after his death, while a quick, seemingly spur of the moment decision, was a bit of a good idea. Fortinbras, despite being a threat to the kingdom toward the beginning of the play, understood the inner workings of a country better than any of the other remaining characters at the time of Hamlet's death, simply because Fortinbras was already taking care of Norway. While it may seem like poor thinking on Hamlet's part to allow someone who previously imposed a threat to stake claim of the country, the only other living options Hamlet had were people who had no experience being in charge, such as Horatio, Francisco, or Osric. Hamlet had likely considered all of his options long before his battle with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Treatment Of The Mentality Of Hamlet And Prince Hamlet Mental health disorders manifest through every part of the body altering the way a person is able to function. The body reacts the way that the mind tells it to, and when the mind is corrupt complications arise within the individuals causing potentially life–altering diseases and impulsive actions (Civil Rights Union, 2016). Hamlet's erratic behaviors have proved that he has gone completely mad. He has depression over his father's death, and his constant mentions of suicide. He also has borderline personality disorder due to the ghost of his father visiting leaving stress, and anxiety towards the task of killing his uncle for revenge, being the reason it took Hamlet so long to complete this. We see his feelings of intense emotions of insanity, love, and shame demonstrated and through this we are able to negate that something was wrong mentally. When we first join Prince Hamlet in the play we see that his father King Hamlet has passed recently. After King Hamlets passing, his wife Queen Gertrude has already been remarried to King Hamlet's brother Claudius. Prince Hamlet has carried a deal of built up aggression around from these events, because he feels like Claudius has brain washed his mother, just so that he can take the thrown. Prince Hamlet also feels like his mother has betrayed his father, and the loss of his father has been weighing heavily on his mind. In the story King Hamlet is already dead, so he appears as a ghost or spirit. He appears as a ghost to tell his son that something is not right and it needs to be fixed as soon as possible. This coming from a ghost is very sicking, so Hamlet listened to the dead King as well as his father. For the other characters above we do not meet King Fortinbras in the play and only see Prince Fortinbras. very briefly in a scene. • 7. Questioning the Sanity of Hamlet in Shakespeare's Hamlet,... In William Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, we, as readers, increasingly question the sanity of the protagonist, Hamlet, as the play continues. His seemingly psychotic banter with the other characters of the play begins to convince us that Hamlet is, indeed, insane. Hamlet, however, states, "How strange or odd soe'er I bear myself, as I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on" (1.5.171). He specifically tells Horatio and Marcellus that he will be acting mad, as a front. Hamlet has an exceptional grasp on mental philosophy and the uses and effects of logic, more so than the other characters of the play. Because of this, Hamlet appears insane to others, but in fact remains true to his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Horatio and Hamlet see each other for the first time in a long while, they immediately are excited. Hamlet, with his sometimes–sinister blunt remarks, goes on to tell of how close the wedding and funeral are to each other. "Thrift, thrift, Horatio. The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables" (1.2.179). However, on the opposite end of the spectrum of Hamlet's commentary, his conversations with Polonius are rude and often pointed. In act 2 scene 2, Hamlet makes fun of Polonius for being old and for his long–winded speeches, but does so with such intelligence and awareness that Polonius fails to understand what Hamlet is saying at all, thereby thinking Hamlet is simply mad. This differentiation between playful banter and slanderous remarks show that Hamlet was incredibly mentally alert. More than just being aware of the logic in a situation, Hamlet is mentally present enough to question even his own thought processes. Hamlet is "in the position of the professional philosopher who criticizes his thoughts while he is thinking them" (Davis 631). In Hamlet's "to be or not to be" soliloquy (3.1.58), he is questioning his own thinking by debating with himself about whether or not people dream after death. It takes a sane mind to be able to equally weigh the consequences of something as dark and intense as suicide. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Pros And Cons Of Prince Hamlet Would anybody that is truly insane ever actually claim to others that he or she is insane (or pretending to be insane), as Prince Hamlet did to his trusted companions Horatio and Marcellus? Most likely not, as such a person probably would not be able to realize the extent of his or her delusion on his or her own, and therefore would stubbornly deny that he or she is in fact crazy. Furthermore, would any truly mad individual ever, if given a relatively easy opportunity to take his or her revenge against someone who had committed great wrongs against him or her (and therefore caused the individual to fall into insanity in the first place), take the time to evaluate the pros and cons of taking revenge at that time – as Prince Hamlet did while his hated uncle Claudius (who had apparently killed Hamlet's father, the king of Denmark, taken the Danish throne for himself, and even married Hamlet's mother Gertrude in the process) was attempting to pray for forgiveness for his wicked deeds and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Certainly not – a truly insane person would have taken his or her revenge immediately on impulse (of course, unless he or she had become so crazy that all of his or her memories or senses had been lost) without even fully realizing the details of the situation. These examples, as well as Hamlet's purposefully disheveled appearances before his former love Ophelia, his playful conversation with Ophelia's father (and Claudius's adviser and lackey) Polonius, and his actions after his murder of Polonius, seem to show that the madness displayed by Hamlet during several key parts of Williams Shakespeare's famous tragic play Hamlet was not real, but feigned. Despite this, many common readers (and audiences) of Shakespeare's Hamlet are still often left believing that the titular Prince Hamlet's supposedly feigned "antic disposition" is actually genuine ... • 11. APPEARANCE vs. REALITY IN "THE PRINCE" AND "HAMLET" 3. Reality and appearances, or if you prefer, being and acting, are important themes for both Machiavelli and Shakespeare. Why? How do their perspectives on this subject agree or differ? APPEARANCE vs. REALITY IN "THE PRINCE" AND "HAMLET" One of the most fundamental questions in philosophy is the appearance vs. reality. We find ourselves asking the question of what is genuinely "real," and what is viewed merely as just an "appearance," and not real? It becomes difficult when we assume there is a difference in the two to determine which is which. Generally, what we label as "real" is regarded as external and eternal. What we refer to as just an appearance is regarded as temporary and internal. Many early as well as modern day authors use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although he appears to be a confident father he does not trust his son to go away on his own. Furthermore, Polonius adds to the theme of appearance versus reality by ordering Ophelia to stop seeing Hamlet. He lies to her by telling her that Hamlet does not love her, he only lusts for her. Two of Hamlet's closest friends from his childhood Rosencrantz and Guildenstern can as well be viewed as liars who become very deceitful to Hamlet. After being asked by the king to find out what is bothering Hamlet, the two go to Hamlet pretending to see him as a friend, but are in reality just obeying the king's orders. When they ask what is troubling Hamlet, they become insincere, and almost sound as though they had rehearsed what it was they were going to say. Hamlet noticed that the boys were told to do this and states, "A dream itself is but a shadow" (Hamlet 73). Hamlet then realized that his own friend were not in reality any friends at all. The king again sends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to apologize for their behavior but Hamlet noticed their intentions yet again and simply insulted them. Hamlet's supposed friends greatly add to the theme of appearance vs. reality. • 12. Prince Hamlet Versus Machiavelli's Prince Essay Prince Hamlet Versus Machiavelli's Prince The Prince is a celebrated and highly controversial piece of work by the Italian aristocrat Niccolo Machiavelli. His work is a summation of all the qualities a prince must have in order to remain in his position. Machiavelli supports the idea that a prince use his power for the ultimate benefit of all, but he also does not condemn the use of any unpleasant means in order for the prince to maintain his power. His ideas both compare and contrast to the methods used by Prince Hamlet of Denmark in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Hamlet, as we know, struggles mightily to maintain his position as the prince, and one must wonder if this is due to some of the highly essential qualities outlined by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning, Hamlet struggles to remain good at all times, but this only causes him extreme anguish. Hamlet must soon come to disregard his sense of morality in order to save himself, which is essentially exactly what Machiavelli professed one must do. He shows little remorse in killing Polonius, and he turns against his old friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Still, one has to believe that Hamlet is not without a conscience, because his desire for revenge is fulfilled only at the very end as he himself dies. Another point made within Machiavelli's writings is that a prince must strive to avoid hatred, yet at the same time, be feared by all those around him. Hamlet most certainly achieved the first goal, for I believe he was highly regarded by all his subjects, but he rarely acted in a way to inspire fear in those around him. Indeed, Polonius, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstem had no trouble plotting against him, because they had no fear that he would turn against them in a violent or malicious manner. On the other hand, I believe Hamlet was a threat to them once he began acting so insanely, because his actions were much more unpredictable. A key point is that men are fickle and constantly changing, as demonstrated by Hamlet himself, so one must be prepared for any turn of events. Machiavelli goes on to stress that while it can be beneficial to appear a good and honorable man, a prince must always be prepared to resort to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William... Somewhere between the years of 1599 and 1602, William Shakespeare wrote his longest, most influential and powerful tragedy, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Set in the Kingdom of Denmark, the play stages the revenge that a young prince seeks against his uncle for murdering his father, inheriting the throne, and subsequently marrying his mother. Prince Hamlet, a university student, is an extremely philosophical and thoughtful character. When his father the King of Denmark dies, Hamlet returns home only to be presented with evidence that suggests his uncle Claudius may have been responsible for his father's murder. However, he vows to seek revenge against his uncle, although he refuses to do so without first having sufficient evidence to prove his uncle's guilt. A few months later, with the help of actors from his university in Wittenberg, Hamlet decides to stage a play of his father's poisoning for Claudius. Hamlet believes that Claudius' reaction to the play will either confirm or deny his guilt. In act three, Hamlet returns to the theme of suicide. He examines the moral and immoral aspects of suicide in a world that he considers to be so anguished and corrupt in his most famous soliloquy: To be, or not to be: that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them? –To die, –to sleep, – No more; and by a sleep to say we end The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to, –'tis a consummation Devoutly to be wish'd. Although his father's ghost initially commands him to avenge his murder, Prince Hamlet interprets revenge on his own to mean an "eye for an eye" retaliation against his uncle. This indicates Hamlet's ability to make his own decisions to some degree, and leads into the idea that he is more influenced by his own thoughts than those of the ghost. As the play progresses (and Hamlet more often loses the ability to steer his own country and his own mind) Hamlet's desires to regain autonomy over his actions appear to grow stronger than his need to take revenge. For this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most notably, Hamlet admires Fortinbras ability to invade another country for "Two thousand souls and twenty thousand ducats"(4.4, 24). This contrasts heavily with Hamlet's own inability to avenge something as important as his father's murder, which he feels makes him seem cowardly. Hamlet understands that "Rightly to be great Is... to find quarrel in a straw when honor's at the stake."(4.4, 53–56) Although Hamlet has been influenced by another's actions here, he is deciding that he wants to protect his honor and stand up for something in which he believes. This reveals why Hamlet decides to take such harsh actions of revenge, since he is trying to prove to himself that he is capable of murder in the first place. Hamlet's admiration for Fortinbras's abilities demonstrates his respect for the other prince and helps to illustrate the notion that Hamlet may want to be similar to Fortinbras (and eventually gain his own independent stature). Additionally, Hamlet realizes that man's "capability and godlike reason"(4.4, 38) is a sacred gift which he feels cannot be wasted. For this reason, Hamlet is able to convince himself that he must act on his wishes to murder Claudius, and demonstrates his individual desire to act in a way that demonstrates his own abilities. This leads him to continue his pursuit of murder. Hamlet finally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. The Demise Of Prince Hamlet In William Shakespeare's Play Every tragedy has a hero that succumbs to an internal flaw. Hamlet is no exception to this rule. In this infamous play by Shakespeare, the main character Prince Hamlet is troubled with the task of avenging his father's death. He is approached by his father's ghost who tells the story of his deceitful murder. After he finishes the story, theghost asks Prince Hamlet to kill his brother and murderer King Claudius. Prince Hamlet's obsession with the perfect plan for revenge is what ultimately brings about his demise. This cause for a perfectly seamless plan resulted in stalling the end result of killing King Claudius and gave the King time to devise a plan of his own. Directly after talking to the ghost of his father, Prince Hamlet formulates a scheme to murder his uncle. During this time Hamlet seems very eager to begin with the first steps of avenging his father's death. Once the ghost leaves Hamlet is talking to himself and he says " So, uncle, there you are. Now to my word" which indicates a sense of urgency and desire to fulfill his father's wishes by any means necessary (I.v.111). • 16. Prince Hamlet : The Leading Role In William Shakespeare's... Prince Hamlet, the leading role in William Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet, is a dark, and brooding figure in the play. When his father, the previous King Hamlet, is murdered by his brother, Hamlet's uncle, Claudius, Hamlet struggles to climb out of his grief. Two months after the murder, Hamlet's mother marries with Claudius, who then becomes King of Denmark. With little understanding and support from his mother and stepfather/uncle, Hamlet struggles to heal in a healthy manner; thus, he develops suicidal tendencies, as the wounds created by his father's death simply grow with his negative feelings. There are multiple instances throughout the play where Hamlet questions the value of his life ("For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,/ [...] When he himself might his quietus make/ With a bare bodkin?" [III.I.78, 83–84]), and as a result, contemplates suicide ("To be or not to be – that is the question" [III.I.64]). However, due to his fear of the afterlife ("For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,/When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,/Must give us pause." [III.I.74–76]), and loyalty to the Christian belief that suicide is a sin (he wishes that the "Everlasting had not fixed His canon 'gainst self–slaughter" [I.II.135–136]), Hamlet remains idle, unable to act upon his deepest desires, which so happens to be his biggest fear as well. As his feelings of nihilism fester, Hamlet turns to revenge for validation. In Act I, scene II, Hamlet is introduced to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cruttwell also brings up the intense situations that Hamlet has to endure, including the death of his father, incesiouc marriage of his mother, and the appearance of his father's ghost, which warrant any degree of emotion. It is then inferred from this that he is responsible for his actions and therefore has taken it upon himself to revenge his father by any means necessary out of duty. He then brings up two possible interpretations of Hamlet's revenge. The other interpretation is that the ghost was a representation of Hamlet giving into temptation and therefore his actions were not driven by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. The Prince, written by NiccolГІ Machiavelli, is a treatise on how to take and hold on to political power. Both Hamlet and The Prince contain the concept of fortune as a common theme throughout each work. Fortune is talked about in similar ways in both, including how fortune is a woman, how much control fortune has over people, and how fortune is like water. • 22. The Great Prince Of Denmark, Hamlet, By William Shakespeare The Elizabethan era consisted of a time where women were viewed as minorities in society and were often thought to have been devised in the weaker image of men. Being given limited political, economical and social freedom led to their diminutive role in literature. In contrast to this degrading trend, Shakespeare introduced femininity in a new light. He created female characters who contradict the stereotypes of his time, impacting both the plot and surrounding characters of his plays. One of his most famous tragedies, Hamlet, revolves around the great prince of Denmark, Hamlet, who encounters the apparition of his deceased father, the former king. The ghost asks that Hamlet seeks revenge upon Claudius, his uncle and new father, for it was he who murdered him and seduced the queen, as a plan to gain top status in society. Faking madness, Hamlet strives to kill Claudius, and although successful, many other lives, including his own, pass in the meanwhile . Ophelia, the daughter of the king's top advisors, finds herself caught in the middle of this situation as people assume Hamlet has gone mad out of pure love for her. Gertrude, Hamlet's mother, soon faces the consequences of participating in her husband's murder. Although it is different for every individual, this process is easier for some to go through than it is for others. In Hamlet's case, the events that slowly change him prove to be quite unbearable. It is people that mean the most to him that lead him to change, not because he wants to, but because he has to. They cause Hamlet to lose his mind, drive him insane, and in the end, it was a loss for everyone that was involved. From the beginning of the play, Hamlet is labelled as a heavy hearted and unhappy man. This is seen as "Hamlet's Transformation" as the King called it. He has not always been like this. In Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, Prince Hamlet experiences many dilemmas that lead him to revenge and his transformation form good to evil. Shakespeare displays that revenge leads to insanity. From the moment humans come out of the womb, their conscience begins to form. As John Locke describe with tabula rasa, the mind is a blank slate and experience fills it in. Often this explanation is combined with another: that conscience comes from culture, that it is built up in us from outside." Many others agree with his view that with time the barrier that shields from the bad can be broken down if wrongs are constantly being done either by the person or involving the person. In Hamlet's situation, when his father was murdered he wanted to take revenge on Claudius, but he could not carry through with it at first due to his conscience being too pure. The Elizabethan era was also known as the "golden age" because of its developments and changes. The Awakening by Kate Chopin was published in 1899, which was the Victorian era. The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and the Awakening were written many years apart and also in different literary eras, but they share many similar themes. The Awakening and Hamlet expresses love as a major theme. In both literary works, it is presented in the same forms and different forms. In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the theme of love is expressed through many characters and relationships within the play. One way it is expressed is as tragic love. Tragic love is expressed in King Hamlet and Gertrude. It is tragic love because their relationship together was very short lived due to the temper of King Hamlets' brother, Claudius. Another way that tragic love is expressed is through the relationship of Prince Hamlet and Ophelia. That is exemplified as tragic love because Hamlet deeply loves Ophelia, but Ophelia's father Polonis doesn't care for Hamlet and doesn't was his daughter to pursue him because he thinks that Hamlet will just hurt her and since Hamlet is the Prince of Denmark, Ophelia doesn't have the social standing to be good enough as the potential queen since she is just a daughter of a courtier and Polonis doesn't want his daughter hurt. This is also expressed as a tragic love because they cannot end up together because while Hamlet is away in England Ophelia drowns, but hamlet doesn't find out until he comes back and is spying on her funeral. The theme of tragic love can also be expressed with Laertes and Ophelia, since Laertes is Ophelia's brother he wants to protect her and at Ophelia's funeral Laertes asked the doctor "Must there no more be done?" and the doctor basically says we can't do anything else sine she took her own life, but Laertes wants anything and everything possible done to give her what he thinks she deserves and he knows that deserves more than that since he refers to her as a "minist'ring angel...". • 29. Character Comparison : Titus Andronicus And Prince Hamlet Essay One Character comparison: Titus Andronicus and Prince Hamlet The two major characters, Hamlet and Titus of Shakespearean plays, Hamlet and Titus Andronicus are characteristic in terms of considering revenge and aspiring to avenge the murders. However, the two are quite different in their approach toward revenge. This is due to the fact that two protagonist in their respective plays consider revenge differently since Titus is anxious to avenge the murder andHamlet delays his decision of taking revenge while seeking other alternatives to revenge such as suicide. Therefore, the theme of procrastination in Hamlet is the cause of delay in taking the revenge of Hamlet's father's murder. However, the theme of long delays and seeking alternative to revenge such as in the form of suicide while c considering it less sinful as compare to revenge from the aspect of the Christian theology also discloses that Hamlet is sensible and even in the times of emotional instability, he does not fall beneath what is humanlike behavior. On the contrary, Titus does not show such emotional savvy while expression grave concern and shows eagerness to avenge the murder (Burwick 24). Yet, if you change your perspective that man wearing a suit may look professional, until he opens his mouth. • 32. Prince Hamlet As A Tragic Hero In Shakespeare's Hamlet As defined by Aristotle, A tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his or her own destruction. In the play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare, Prince Hamlet is the tragic hero. Prince Hamlet can even be considered a quintessential tragic hero due to how closely he relates to Aristotle's definition. Initially he has noble motives which were to avenge his father's death but by the end, his flaws and bad decisions lead him to his death. The fact that Prince Hamlet's best trait is also his downfall makes him one of the most tragic heroes in Shakespeare's work. In these ways and more, Prince Hamlet fulfills Aristotle's definition of a tragic hero. First, as Aristotle indicates, a tragic hero must face a serious decision that they have to make. Prince Hamlet has to make many very serious decisions throughout the play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare, starting in act III. The first decision Prince Hamlet has to make is whether or not he should kill his uncle Claudius. At the end of act III scene iii Prince Hamlet plans to kill Claudius but walks in on him while he appears to be praying. Prince Hamlet believes that if he kills Claudius while in prayer, Claudius will go to heaven and will not be punished for murdering his father. This decision is crucial in the play because it causes a chain reaction of events. Another important decision Prince Hamlet makes is choosing to fight Laertes. In act IV, scene vii Claudius and Laertes plan to lure Prince Hamlet into a dull when he returns to Denmark. When he arrives, Prince Hamlet goes to the churchyard with Horatio. Soon the funeral procession for Ophelia enters the churchyard. Prince Hamlet rushes to her grave and begins arguing with Laertes. This argument leads to Prince Hamlet agreeing to the dual. This is a serious decision because it ultimately leads to his death. Another way in which Prince Hamlet meets Aristotle's tragic hero definition lies in his error of judgement. Prince Hamlet's first error of judgement occurs when he kills Polonius after mistaking him for Claudius. In act III scene iv, the queen and Polonius wait for Prince Hamlet's arrival. Polonius plans to hide and listen to the queen and Prince Hamlet's argument ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare the main character, Prince Hamlet, fakes going mad, but in that same faking he begins to believe his own lie. Hamlet begins to deteriorate into a madman and while losing grip of his reality he dies due to the result of his insanity. Famous psychologist, Sigmund Freud, had a theory that one's grown up life is affected by the past events in one's childhood. • 35. A Comparison of Shakespeare's Prince Hamlet and... A Comparison of Prince Hamlet and Machiavelli's The Prince Machiavelli states that "it is necessary for a prince, who wishes to maintain himself, to learn how not to be good, and use this knowledge and not use it, according to the necessity of the case." Machiavelli's ideas both compare and contrast to the methods used by Hamlet. Hamlet's desire to drive the king mad and eventually kill him, is what he thinks he must do in order to set things right. Hamlet struggles to maintain his position as prince. Perhaps he lacks the essential qualities of a prince outlined by Machiavelli. According to Machiavelli, the pursuit of all things regarded as virtuous and praiseworthy will only lead to the prince's ruin. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I know not 'seems.' 'Tis not alone my inky cloak, good mother, nor customary suits of solemn black . . . Together with all forms, moods, shapes of grief, that can denote me truly. These indeed seem, for they are actions that a man might play; but I have that within which passes show, these but the trappings and the suits of woe." (Hamlet, I, ii., 76–86) Hamlet tells her in this quote, that his feelings are true, and that he does in fact grieve for his father. His outward self is just like his inward self. He reveals this again later, in his first soliloquy, when he shows his disgust for the "seeming world," in which everything is "weary, stale, flat and unprofitable." (Hamlet, I, ii., 133) Hamlet must soon come to disregard his sense of morality in order to save himself, and he does, proving the second part of Machiavelli's quote: "Therefore, it is necessary for a prince, who wishes to maintain himself, to learn how not to be good ..." The first signs of this appear when the players arrive at the court. He shows that he can learn how not to be good, when he uses the first player's skill to his advantage. He asks the player "You could study a speech of some dozen or sixteen lines, which I would set down and insert in't, couldn't you?" (Hamlet, II, ii., 534–536) The player then agrees that he will insert the speech written by Hamlet into his own speech, on the night of the play. In his soliloquy, Hamlet mentions how he will use the player's acting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Hamlet, Prince of Denmark Hamlet, Prince of Denmark By William Shakespeare Submitted by: Tariq Khan Dated: Monday, 24th September, 2012 Hamlet as a Tragedy by William Shakespeare 1.1. Brief Introduction to Tragedy: Greek and English: Elizabethan tragedy is traced back to Greek tragedy, since Greeks are said to have pioneered the Western knowledge, be it Science, Arts, or Humanities–not necessarily Technology. The rich contribution of Greek dramatists like Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus and Aristophanes, is noteworthy, towards the development of both Roman and English Drama. Though Roman Drama could not thrive much as to invite the attention of Western audience, but English Drama excelled in Elizabethan Age (due to the royal patronage), with... Sixthly, Pity and Fear for Catharsis are perhaps common in both the tradition of tragedies. And, lastly, the role of chorus (highlighting the past and intimating the future–pivotal to the plot), being common in Greek and English Tragedies, make them closer to each other. 1.2.William Shakespeare's Hamlet: Hamlet by William Shakespeare is believed to be the Crown of Tragedies because of its thematic heterogeneity, stylistic features, rich characterization and appeal to Human Heart. A heart rending tragedy that overwhelms with revenge, filial love and introspection–explicitly exposed in four major Soliloquies by Hamlet, the prince. The said drama is equally fascinating to the students of history, philosophy, psychology, literature and perhaps many more. Though, it has flaws in its plot being unsystematic and less causative for the fulfilment of Organic Whole, yet the overall/final effect is quite impressive from artistic and literary viewpoints. Speeches of Polonius, Ophelia, Horatio, Claudius, and particularly the Hamlet's glorify the drama; better illustrates and beautifies the tragedy, fulfilling the fundamentals of tragedy. Every character contributes, shares and cares, and above all, involved in the main action–action being the soul of drama! Internal and External Conflicts

  • 38. Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark, By William Shakespeare The famous tragedy entitled Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, often abbreviated to Hamlet and written at the turn of the seventeenth century, was the playwright William Shakespeare's longest play and among the most influential works to exist in English literature. The play dramatizes the poisonous intents of the demonically brilliant king of Denmark, Claudius, a man so driven by greed and lust for his brother's, King Hamlet's, throne, wife and supremacy that he commits the ultimate act of fratricide, consequently inheriting the "primal eldest curse" of Cain and Abel. His toxic act affected his relationships with numerous other characters, and eventually led to several of their demises. Prince Hamlet, son of the late King Hamlet and Claudius' nephew and step–son, was one such example of a character directly affected by Claudius' venomous ways; he became suicidal after his father's unnatural death. This essay will examine the poisonous nature of King Claudius, the inadvertent penalties of his deeds and Hamlet's extensive use of the trope of poison. "In the complex web of human destinies, where so many lives are meshed intricately together, the freely chosen actions of one individual may breed damaging, entirely unforeseeable effects in the lives of countless anonymous others." (On Evil, Terry Eagleton, p. 33). Eagleton, a prominent British literary theorist and critic, is essentially saying here that one's actions can have a profound effect on many people and situations and can ... • 39. Hamlet Prince Of Denmark And The Awakening Analysis The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare was written in 1599 during the Elizabethan era. The Elizabethan era was also known as the "golden age" because of its developments and changes. The Awakening by Kate Chopin was published in 1899, which was the Victorian era. The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark and the Awakening were written many years apart and also in different literary eras, but they share many similar themes. The Awakening and Hamlet express love as major theme. In both literary works it is presented in the same forms and different forms. In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the theme of love is expressed through many characters and relationships within the play. One way it is expressed is as tragic love. Tragic love is expresses in King Hamlet and Gertrude. It is tragic love because their relationship together was very short lived due to the temper of King Hamlets' brother, Claudius. Another way that tragic love is expressed is through the relationship of Prince Hamlet and Ophelia. That is exemplified as tragic love because Hamlet deeply loves Ophelia but Ophelia's father Polonis doesn't care for Hamlet and doesn't was his daughter to pursue him because he thinks that Hamlet will just hurt her and since Hamlet is the Prince of Denmark, Ophelia doesn't have the social standing to be good enough as the potential queen since she is just a daughter of a courtier and Polonis doesn't want he daughter hurt. The theme can also be expressed through the Gertrude and Ophelia, since at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Analysis Of Prince Hamlet By William Shakespeare Jean Jacques Rousseau stated that: "man is born free; but everywhere he lives in chains". This suggests humankind is only free at the moment of birth and thereafter they live their lives chained down by forces working to hold them back from being who they truly are. Every man and women are shaped not by their freedoms, but by their limitations. This is evident in all types of literature and from observation of the world we live in now. However, I have chosen to analyze Prince Hamlet in Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Winston Smith in 1984 by George Orwell and lastly The Man in The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Throughout the entirety of Hamlet. Hamlet is shaped into a vengeful murderer unable to love or to act sanely due to his father 's ghost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He then goes on to justify the murder by saying "A bloody deed. Almost as bad, good mother, As kill a king and marry with his brother."(3.4, 33) this shows that Hamlet has become completely discounted from the real world and only care about revenge for his father because of the insanity brought on from the chain of his father 's murder. 1984 is similar to Hamlet in the way that the main character Winston Smith is also chained down by the loss of family, guilt and a longing for love and freedom. During the second part of 1984 Winston has a dream about the days when his mother and sister were still alive and the three of them were seeking shelter in air raid bunkers when a chocolate ration was distributed, Winston however thought all the chocolate should be for him and steal the chocolate from his little sister and runs, his mother yells after him: "Winston, Winston! Come back! Give your sister back her chocolate"(Orwell, 170) but he does not come back for a few hours, and when he does his mother and sister are gone. This tragedy chains Winston down for years subconsciously tearing him apart and changing how he views himself because he believes he killed his mother and sister. Throughout the book Winston talks about the way he must act and the way he must talk if he does not want to be killed or put into a forced labor camp. This constant micro managing of Winston causes him to break certain rules and he eventually ventures into the proles(The lowest class of human) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(3.3.77–83) Hamlet has devised a plan to get revenge on the man who killed his father, but he is hesitant. In this quote, Hamlet is about to strike Claudius with the sword, when he realizes that Claudius is praying. If he really is praying, then he goes to heaven. How would that be fair that the man who killed Hamlet's father goes to heaven? So Hamlet doesn't kill Claudius.
