Roman Clothing
The Romans – Clothing
Roman clothes were made of wool, spun into cloth by the women of the family. Later on the richer people had slaves to do this work for them. If
you could afford to buy clothes, you could buy linen, cotton or silk, which was brought to Rome from other parts of the Empire. Washing clothes
was difficult because the Romans did not have washing machines or soap powder. They used either a chemical called sulphur or urine.
These are the clothes that Romans wore

Under the emperors the right of wearing a golden ring was more liberally conferred and eventually it was granted by Justinian to all citizens.Roman
Jewelry – Seal Rings
The rings worn by the men in Ancient Roman were not just expensive ornaments, they also served a practical purpose and were used to seal
documents as a sign of authenticity. Official documents were not signed, but sealed; and the seal was good in law. Every wealthy Roman patrician
therefore, had his seal, as party of his ring, ready for use if required. The bezel of the ring was movable, and turned upon a pivot. The ring was
frequently set with some kind of precious stone engraved with the owner 's emblem. Other rings with a practical function doubled as keys to
strongboxes.Roman Jewelry – Brooches, Clasps and the Fibula
Roman clothing was frequently pinned rather than sewn and the Romans used special called a fibula for this purpose. Many of these fasteners, or
fibula, were made of gold and elaborately decorated with precious jewels. Some of the gold was carved with beautiful designs and the Romans also
favored the cameo as a decoration. The fibula was worn by both Roman men and women. The sagum was the name of the cloak worn on top of the
armor by members of the Roman military during the periods of the Roman Republic and the early Roman Empire. The sagum consisted of a simple

Pros And Cons Of Roman Government
The Roman government is very unique compared to other societies. The majority of societies were either controlled by monarchy or democracy,
however the Romans found a way to have both. The Roman empire had both a senate and an emperor. The Senate was Democracy which was made
up by electing officials who although made laws couldn't finalize the law without approval from emperor. The Emperor made up the Monarchy part
having the final say in all important objectives. The Roman Emperor was very much like our modern day president. He oversaw the senate often
conducting the meetings. Even though he conducted the Senate, he actually approved only what he deemed worth for finalization. Some of the most
famous leaders in history such as Julius Ceasar, Augsustus Ceasar, and Nero were Emperors of Rome. The Senate and the Roman People (SPQR, or
Senatus Populusque Romanus), described the difference in class between the Senate and ordinary people. The Roman People were all citizens who
were not members of the Senate or the emperor. Power was vested in the Roman People, through the Committee of the Hundreds , the Committee of

inches wide (latus clavus) on the right shoulder. Thus showing their status. A senator pedarius (or a non voting senator) wore a white toga virilis
(also called a toga pura) without decoration. A senator who had held a curule magistracy, and thus the right to speak and vote was entitled to wear
the toga praetexta, a white toga with a broad purple border. Additionally, the Senate, both Patricians and Equestrian Plebes, were largely responsible

The Ancient Roman Way of Life Essay
The Roman way of life is different and similar to modern day. Though one may not know much over the Roman's the culture is fascinating and still
remembered in history. The clothes, food, customs, and leisure are major in Roman lifestyle. During the ancient Roman time period, clothing was
crucial in citizens' status of either emperor, wealthy, middle class, poor, or slave. The emperor would have worn the toga trabea, which was, "formal
differences in togas which denoted social rank" (Roman Dress). The emperor himself would wear a toga with a purple stripe to show his status. As
emperor, he would also wear the latus clavus, tunica palmata, and the toga palmata. For wealthy citizens, "It was simply deemed improper for such a

In addition, Romans had amazing food and dining utensils that they used for their dinner parties and elaborate meals. During Ancient Rome,
"Romans waited until the main meal of the day, the cena, (Tingay and Marks 38) to truly eat. The cena came in three courses, the appetizers, the
main course, and the secundae mensae. When the food was served, it came with plenty of wine. This was because Romans had two hundred
varieties or more from all over the empire. In the cena, "Food was served on dishes. Most were made of glass or pottery, but if the family was very
rich there would also be ornate platters of gold and silver (Tingay and Marks 39). The Romans had spoons and knives but they preferred eating with
their hands and fingers. As the slaves brought the food out on various dishes they would also pour the wine from the amphorae into a jug for easy
pouring during meals. At many of the meals the host would normally have three couches, the summus, medius, and imus. (Top, middle, bottom).
"The diners were seated according to their social status" (Tingay and Marks 39). When the guest arrived at the host's house for the dinner party there
would be couches surrounding the tables and musicians, jugglers, acrobats, dancers, and conjurers performing. The hosts hired entertainers to the
meal to make it more enjoyable and entertaining. The first course was mainly consisting of salads, seafood, eggs, and mulsum. (Wine sweetened

Facts About The Movie Gladiator
The movie Gladiator is based on a fictional storyline that takes place during the time of Ancient Rome. After having learned about Ancient Rome
and the fashions of that time, I can say that the film Gladiator had both accurate and inaccurate representations of Ancient Roman fashion
throughout. Some of the costumes, hair and makeup shown in the movie were accurate, while others were not. Janty Yates was the costume designer
for Gladiator. There were certain aspects of the costumes in this film that she did accurately according to the clothing worn in Ancient Rome. In the
movie, Maximus and the other slaves and prisoners of war were seen wearing light blue and/or beige tunics. As mentioned in the video lecture,
tunics were extremely important in Ancient Rome for both men and women and would continue to be in the years to come. Men wore them under
their togas and women wore them under their stola. Tunics on men and women were both shown in Gladiator throughout the film. Toga trabea were
seen early on in the film and were worn by the emperor Caesar, and then by his son Commodus after he killed his father. The toga trabea that they
wore were purple which was historically correct since only the Emperor and his sons were allowed to wear it. Their toga were also embroidered
intricately which showed their high status. However, I did come across a few anachronisms regarding the color purple. In the scene where Maximus

and makeup in the film were accurate for the most part. Most of the men in the film had the Caesar cut that was mentioned in the video lecture, and

The Toga Virilis
The toga was important in determining the class of which a man came from, how a man looked was central to their public perception. According to
Alice T. Christ, the toga virilis was an "explicit attribute of Roman manhood," (Christ 25). It was necessary to gain civic recognition in order to be
considered a man, vir. A few years after puberty would celebrate "legal majority" would wear a plain white toga para. The toga virilis "signified a
bodily state: sexually capable and male; but also a Roman citizen body, a normative political construct for which male sexual maturity was on the
first prerequisite," (Christ 25). Furthermore, per White, the toga was a vehicle for Augustus's programmatic restoration of ancestral customs. The

The Toga In Ancient Rome
A cultural significant clothing item that was used in Rome in the first and second century B.C. was the toga. The toga, as the Webster dictionary
states, "is a loose flowing outer garment worn by the citizens of Rome." The outer garment typically made from wool and often portrayed in white
was fabricated from a single piece of cloth and covered the whole body apart from the right arm. The toga has become a very distinctive garment not
only in Roman costume but also in the history of costume. The toga was popularized and thought to originate from the Roman Empire; nonetheless,
the toga's origins date back to the Etruscan period.
Romans made a distinction between garments as we do today. Garments that were "put on" were referred to in Latin as inductus and were worn
underneath or closests to the skin: the tunic. While garments that were "wrapped around" were referred to in Latin as amictus and were considered
outerwear: the toga. Initially, both men and women wore the toga over a loincloth–a cloth that covered the genitals. However, by the second century

The earliest toga was draped in a roughly semicircular shape with a band color around the curved edge. By the Imperial period the shape and
drapery of the toga grew to be more complex. Two new added features were the sinus and the umbo. The sinus formed the over fold of the toga. The
loose fold that crossed the back of the body and emerged under the right arm and then fell near the knee was the sinus. The sinus that was later
widened became a pocket to carry things. The umbo was a clump of fabric vertically placed from the floor to the shoulder. The umbo was a
decorative element as well as a functional one. The umbo may have helped hold the toga drapery in place and men sometimes pulled up the over
fold from the back of their head to use as hood before entering a

really wasn't sure if Elis was safe to ride, but we needed ride badly because if we are late to class again we will have to sit in the freezer. I can't do

She said that Mrs. Eve was about to have a nervous breakdown because of the nuclear change in on our planet. She could possibly destroy the town
with all the rage she will have. Then something came to my mind. It's like a lightbulb went off in my head. I mentioned " Why don't we build a time

But how would we build a time machine?" I suggested, " We could use some old parts of yours from you old projects that you never finished." All I
know is that we better build it fast before Mrs. Eve attacks the city. The next day we started building the time machine. I figured that just three of us

Ancient Roman Social Classes
The Ancient Roman society was very class conscious and status was extremely important. By design, Ancient Roman clothing revealed the status of
its wearer, which made it easy for society to recognize and differentiate between those who belonged to the upper class and those who belonged to
the lower class. Society was divided into six specific classes which were known as patricians, senators, equestrians, plebeians, freed people and
slaves. Patricians, senators and equestrians were considered as the upper class people. Plebeians, also known as commoners, were considered as the
middle class and freed people and slaves made up the lower class. Each of these groups of people wore different clothing that distinguished their
role and status in society. The differences between these social classes can be revealed by studying the various styles of clothing worn by the lower

Slaves were considered the property of their masters and freed people, who were previously slaves, still faced many restrictions. The lower class
people were not wealthy and considered unimportant in society, which was reflected in their attire. The tunic was a standard clothing item which
was generally worn under a toga, although slaves wore the tunic on its own, as they were not allowed to wear a toga by law. The tunic could be
worn by both men and women. A men's tunic would generally stop at the knees, whereas a woman's tunic, worn under a stola, would nearly reach
the ground and have longer sleeves. Slaves were generally barefooted and wore plain tunics that did not have any special markings, while freed
people tended to wear tunics which were nicer and more expensive. Freed people also wore round felt hats known as Pileus' which symbolized
liberty. By dressing in this manner, the status of the lower class people could be recognized by the rest of

The statue shows the God in a good light and as a muscular and fit being, but at the same time is portrayed in an extremely unrealistic way. The
Statue of Asklepios is a classic Greek sculpture that portrays a person of the most perfect and athletic form. The piece is of a man standing
beautifully while draped in a toga. The toga is draped over his left shoulder and cuts across to the right side of his body near his lower abdomen and
then continues to cover his legs until his ankle. The toga also is draped over the pieces entire back. The piece is missing his head, his left arm and
both his right foot and almost its entire right arm. The piece has a smooth, but not glossy, exterior in all of the areas except for the parts that have
been broken off. Asklepios is portrayed as an incredible fit and beautiful being. The abdomen is extremely muscular and shows off the miraculous
fitness of the model. The toga has many wrinkles, creating a lot of shadow and darks and lights. It also is wrapped in a way that is both loose and
tight in different areas of the sculpture. It is tied right next to the left pectoral and the left armpit. This piece emphasizes the muscular body of this
man while at the same time portraying him standing in such a nonchalant way through the curvature and relaxed look of the figure. And unlike the
Torso of a God, this piece clearly shows movement through the shape of the body and the folds of the toga because

The Prima Porta Augustus was a political propaganda statue made of Augustus that showed his power and ideologies. In the Prima Porta Augustus,
Augustus is seen youthful wearing a toga, a military regalia with an outstretched hand in a noble Roman controlled gesture, is barefoot and by his

Ancient Roman Clothing
During the time of Julius Caesar's ruling, Rome has acquired their own style of clothing from Ancient Greeks. Most clothing at the time were made
out of wool, as it is the most resourceful material at the time. Although there are distinctions between men and women's clothing, most of what they
wear are the same. Their clothing also symbolizes different social statuses and rankings in the empire.
Roman men often wore tunics and togas. Tunics are the equivalent of undergarments to the people of Ancient Rome. They serve as a protection of
the body. Most tunics are shaped as a larger rectangle, often made out of wool. Togas are the outer layer that worn on top of the tunica.

Iconography Of The Good Shepherd
The purpose of this thesis is to compare and contrast iconography of the Good Shephard, in relation to the status of the Good Shepherd as one of the
most popular icons representing Jesus, its origins in pagan art, and the use of similar subject matter. The two images reviewed here cover the period
of the early stages of Christianity within the Roman Empire, and are depictions of the Good Shephard using different format and technique.
The Merriam Webster description of iconography is "traditional or conventional images or symbols associated with a subject and especially a

Christianity is the world's largest religion, with an estimated 2.2 billion believers, nearly a third (31percent) of all 6.9 billion people on Earth (Pew

his/her coming–of–age with the Sacrament of Confirmation (Harrill, 2002). In Eastern Orthodoxy the baptizing Priest gives Confirmation to infants,
directly after baptism. This is usually done by the Bishop laying his hands upon the forehead of the young person, usually between the ages of 12 to
15 years, and marking them with the seal of the Holy Spirit. In some denominations during this sacrament the child, now considered an adult in the
eyes of God, adopts a confirmation name which is added onto their Christian name.

On the 24th of August 79 A.D Mount Vesuvius erupted. Ash and dust covered the the sky 19.2km high. All the ash covered the whole of Pompeii
5m deep. Then a combination of pumice and ash rolled down the mountain at 112 kph and covered pompeii. More than 2,000 people died. The
eruption covered over 320 square kilometres. The ash that covered the town preserved pompeii and the people at their last moments. The volcano
had erupted 50 times before. Pompeii was believed to be built in the bronze age and by the first century AD, it was a thriving holiday resort for
wealthy Romans. It was rediscovered in 1748 when a group of explorers were looking for artifacts. Pompeii is found near the bay of Naples in Italy
and had a population of about 20000. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Ancient Roman Clothing And Social Class
Clothing was on of the most important parts of Roman because it was a direct indication of social standing ("Ancient Roman Clothing"). The
Roman Empire got many of their ideas from the Greeks. The Greeks gave them many inspirations. The higher social class was at the top where the
emperor was. Then it was the middle social class which was the commoners. Then there was the lower social class which was the poor. At the very
bottom of the pyramid were the slaves. One of the main clothing that was worn by everyone was the toga. The toga was worn by everyone but
according to what social class you were in it world differ in material and style. You could also tell someone's social standing by the shoes that they
were wearing. Was your clothing affected by your social class? There are three reasons why clothing in ancient Rome was different according to
social classes for women and children, for higher social classes, and for the slaves and poor. These are that the women and children had different

The Roman clothing was different between the children of Rome and the adults of Rome. Almost everyone in Ancient Rome wore a toga or a tunic.
Children also wore togas but theirs had a different name. Children's toga was called a Toga praetexta. This toga praetexta was not to be worn by
child slaves. Only free children could wear then. To show this, the toga praetexta was just an ordinary white toga but it had one purple stripe
("Ancient Roman Clothing"). All the woman's clothing was often in different colors. The dress that the women wore had a tunic like inside but it
was called stola. While wearing a stola you could easily tell the woman social class by the length of their dress. The upper class women used a wide
ornamental border that is know as institutional on the lower hem of the tunic or stola to show that they were in the higher social class ("Ancient

The North Carolina Museum Of Art
The North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) holds many works of art from all types of cultures from around the world. The Torso of an Emperor in
the Guise of Jupiter from Roman culture and the Torso of Aphrodite from Greek culture, are but two of them. It is unknown who the artist was for
either of them, but the work has lived on for centuries. During the time period the gods were known for their perfection– like body and
extraordinary looks. Since the sculptures highlight only the torso of the body it represents that only image matters and the brain does not.
The Torso of an Emperor in the Guise of Jupiter was made during the first century with marble. Standing at 56 ½ x 29 ½ x 15 ½ inches. The statue
depicts a torso of an emperor's body with the torso completely exposed and a sheet that could be assumed as a toga (typical clothing during the time
period) covering the lower part of the body. People worshipped the gods and many stories, still told today marvel of the complete and utter
perfection that the gods were graced with. The artist shows detail directly in the toga to make precise cuts from the marble to show value and create
a life like atmosphere. With the chest and torso area you can clearly see that the man was fit with no fat in sight, only muscle. The form of the work
uses diagonal lines throughout the toga to imply movement upward towards the chest. The lines point upward causing your eyes to look toward the
emperor's torso. Since the gods were known mainly for

Comparison Of Roman Dress, Courtship, And Marriage
Roman Dress, Courtship, and Marriage The Roman society was one of the most accomplished empires known to mankind. Roman marriage
traditions, courtship laws, and dress were progressive compared to other empires of their era. There are numerous Roman traditions that remain in
effect today, and the empire continues to be a proven example of a prosperous society, flourishing with culture. In Roman civilization, dress
represented a variety of things. Traditionally, upper class Romans wore a toga, which symbolized power, humanity, and culture. Status was also
represented by clothing, often through draping, color, and accessories (Leventon 34). For example, purple was a color of high status; a white toga

"A man and a woman who established a household together were considered married"(Bunson 1). As the Roman empire grew, as did marriage
traditions. Marriage ceremonies emerged, branching into three common forms. The religious ceremony which was known as 'confarreatio', was
overseen by elderly priests. The couple would share a type bread, 'far', during the ceremony. Divorce was forbidden in this form of union.
'Coemptio', the most common marriage ceremony, possessed the literary meaning of 'bride purchase', and included a dowry. In this ceremony, the
bride would dress in a white dress, accessorized with an orange veil and shoes. A marriage contract was completed, a kiss and iron rings were
exchanged, and a swine was sacrificed during the ceremony (Goodenough 45). Oil and fat from the swine was spread upon the newly weds home by
guests, and the bride would hang a garland of wool, and bring three copper coins for the home. One coin was given to her husband, and the
remaining were for the household gods (Goodenough 46). The day following the wedding a great feast took place to celebrate the union and to
recognize the bride as a married woman. She would wear a toga known as the 'stola', the robe of a married woman (Bunson 1). The final form of
marriage was a very formal, court oriented wedding. The wedding took place one year after the couple lived in the same household. However if the

different types of clothing, depending on their social status and money.Boys living in the lower class wore only a tunic (tunica) and undergarments
(subligaculum), while the higher classes wore a tunic, undergarments, and toga praetexta. This was, at least, until they reached manhood and
switched out the toga praetexta, which was usually bordered with garnet, for a plain white tunic. Wealthier boys actually had the color purple

Monarchy Vs. Democracy In Ancient Rome
The Roman government is very unique compared to others. While many places had either a monarchy or democracy the Romans found a way to
have both. The Roman empire had both a senate and an emperor. The Senate made up the Democracy part having elected officials who although
made laws couldn't without approval of the emperor. The Emperor made up the Monarchy part having the final say in all important objectives. The
Roman Emperor was very much like our modern day president. He oversaw the senate often conducting the meetings. Before Rome was an empire,
it was a republic with a long history of "democratic" rule. After ousting the Etruscans and their king, city–state was ruled by a Senate and/or an

The speaking order was similar to that of the seating arrangement, in which the princeps senatus held the first chair, followed by the consuls,
censors, praetors, aediles, tribunes and finally, the quaestors. There were no limits to debating and various methods of delay and subversion were
employed. Among these, the practice of the filibuster, or speaking at incredible lengths to derail the opposition and delay voting, was a popular one.
Voting in the Senate could be taken by voice or show of hands in unimportant matters, but important or formal motions were decided by a quorum,

The Influence Of Geography In Ancient Greece
When examining the effect that geography had on the civilizations of the early cities you can see that many were founded for strategic purposes. The
settlers had to choose the land that would make life easiest as well as give them the best chance of developing a flourishing community. The choice
was generally out of need, the need for water, food and shelter. When early leaders chose a place that was full of the necessities and provided smart
options to grow a stronghold the communities would gain power and amass an empire to rival others. The civilizations of Ancient Rome and
Ancient Greece were such empires, they used their geographical locations and features to grow the cities, expand their empires, and trade goods

Many men influenced and helped shape the great empire by strategically changing and adapting its body as more advancement were made, as more
lands were conquered and as more outside influences from neighboring cities were discovered. Two such leaders of Ancient Greece were Alexander
the Great and Pericles. Pericles, though he was a great general and lead his country well he was a different kind of leader then Alexander the Great
was. Pericles was a scholar and he promoted literature and philosophy throughout Athens. The capital city grew as the center of all the intellectual
inspiration, the center for art and education and as the land of democracy. Pericles saw the expansion of the mind occur in Greece. He saw the
addition of great medical thinkers like Hippocrates. He saw the expansion of the written play and he saw the humanities explode leaving the world
with many great works of art still revered today. One great work that Pericles instituted was the public works job system offering jobs and allowing
lower classed citizen's access to government offices. Pericles lead well but fell into critic for his shyness, often choosing to stay out of the spotlight.
Pericles fell victim to the plague and Athens suffered greatly for many years afterward. The country never really got back on track after such a
tragedy. The country was defeated by the Spartans and the city of Athens fell to ruin. No other leader was regarded as effective opting to be popular
instead ultimately affecting the political and social structure for the worse and plunging Athens and Greece into a sort of darkness for over 30 years.
The wars between Sparta and Athens lasted 27 years, changing the thinking of its people, forcing the government from a peace seeking country to a
waring state. This change is what brought forth Alexander the Great and why he was a great leader. Alexander the Great was a considered the best

plays written long ago containing similarities and differences in Props, Scenery, Makeup and The Narrative of the Plot which relate to a tragedy or

A similarity in the scenery of both plays was that both written plays took place in Greece. A Midsummer Night's dream took place in Athens and
Oedipus Rex took place in Thebes. For most of the film in both plays the play took place outside in a nature aspect. Most of the scenes were through
a dessert and a forest. Something different in the scenery is that in Oedipus Rex the scene was more desert like and sad as the drought took place. As
page (1130 line 28) says "Look around you, see with your own eyes, the red waves of death... Thebes is dying". Death being a main problem in the
play made for more darker feelings. The lighting during those tragic moments were darker making the set seem sad or tragic like. During the movie
after the shot taken from when we saw Jocasta before her death the room got darker and more gloomy making us have a view of death or a bad
feeling. In the film A Midsummer Night's Dream the scenery was in the forest and the lighting was bright making the set seem more cheerful. As the
film was already bright throughout the play there would be certain scenes where the lighting would just get brighter during imaginations or dreams
making us believe that the dreams were delightful. Towards the end of the film we saw glitter and a bright setting which was meant to make us feel
cheerful and that peace is restored by the Fairies. In (Act 5 scene 1) the story will be happy towards the end and as the fairies bless the house, peace
is restored, " By us shall blessed be; So shall all couples three, Ever true in loving be". Ending the scene with glitter and bright light makes for a

The Importance Of Roman Clothing In Ancient Roman
Clothing in ancient Rome was so important to the Romans that they specially trained slaves to assist them in putting on their clothes (Roman Dress
3). Not only was it time–consuming and difficult to put on their style of clothing, but the clothes were also often heavy and uncomfortable
(McManus 3). In spite of the clothing being troublesome, it was incredibly useful; with one glance, you could see every Roman's wealth, rank, and
personality. Roman clothing was important because it helped others differentiate between the classes as well as showcase people's personal style.

from various natural sources (Colors of Roman Clothing 1). Wealthier people wore indigo and crimson, which were expensive (Colors of Roman
Clothing 3). Indigo had to be imported from India, and crimson was derived from insects (Colors of Roman Clothing 3). Very light colors were also
an honor to wear. Some politicians would even go as far as using white chalk on their togas in order to stand out (Roman Dress 4). With all these
specifics, a Roman could easily tell how much money someone had based just on the color or type of fabric they were wearing. Another way that
clothes allowed Romans to distinguish between rank was which garments that a person wore. Poor women usually only wore one piece of clothing:
a tunic (Lewis 1). However, a tunic was considered an undergarment for wealthy women (Lewis 2). The women that could afford more clothes wore
a stola over their tunics (Lewis 2). Stolas were flouncy dresses held together at the shoulders by golden rings called fibulae (Lewis 2). Stolas could
also be embroidered with nature–inspired images like fruit, leaves, and flowers (Lewis 4). If a woman was extremely wealthy, she wore a palla over
her stola (Roman Dress 7). A palla was much like a shawl. If a woman wore a palla, it was considered a privilege and

Roman Clothing

  • 1. Roman Clothing The Romans – Clothing Roman clothes were made of wool, spun into cloth by the women of the family. Later on the richer people had slaves to do this work for them. If you could afford to buy clothes, you could buy linen, cotton or silk, which was brought to Rome from other parts of the Empire. Washing clothes was difficult because the Romans did not have washing machines or soap powder. They used either a chemical called sulphur or urine. These are the clothes that Romans wore The Toga This man is wearing a toga. Only male citizens of Rome were allowed to wear togas. They were made out of wool and were very large. The material was not sewn or pinned but was draped around the body and over one arm. Togas were very expensive because of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Under the emperors the right of wearing a golden ring was more liberally conferred and eventually it was granted by Justinian to all citizens.Roman Jewelry – Seal Rings The rings worn by the men in Ancient Roman were not just expensive ornaments, they also served a practical purpose and were used to seal documents as a sign of authenticity. Official documents were not signed, but sealed; and the seal was good in law. Every wealthy Roman patrician therefore, had his seal, as party of his ring, ready for use if required. The bezel of the ring was movable, and turned upon a pivot. The ring was frequently set with some kind of precious stone engraved with the owner 's emblem. Other rings with a practical function doubled as keys to strongboxes.Roman Jewelry – Brooches, Clasps and the Fibula Roman clothing was frequently pinned rather than sewn and the Romans used special called a fibula for this purpose. Many of these fasteners, or fibula, were made of gold and elaborately decorated with precious jewels. Some of the gold was carved with beautiful designs and the Romans also favored the cameo as a decoration. The fibula was worn by both Roman men and women. The sagum was the name of the cloak worn on top of the armor by members of the Roman military during the periods of the Roman Republic and the early Roman Empire. • 2. Pros And Cons Of Roman Government The Roman government is very unique compared to other societies. The majority of societies were either controlled by monarchy or democracy, however the Romans found a way to have both. The Roman empire had both a senate and an emperor. The Senate was Democracy which was made up by electing officials who although made laws couldn't finalize the law without approval from emperor. The Emperor made up the Monarchy part having the final say in all important objectives. The Roman Emperor was very much like our modern day president. He oversaw the senate often conducting the meetings. Even though he conducted the Senate, he actually approved only what he deemed worth for finalization. Some of the most famous leaders in history such as Julius Ceasar, Augsustus Ceasar, and Nero were Emperors of Rome. The Senate and the Roman People (SPQR, or Senatus Populusque Romanus), described the difference in class between the Senate and ordinary people. The Roman People were all citizens who were not members of the Senate or the emperor. Power was vested in the Roman People, through the Committee of the Hundreds , the Committee of the ... A senator who had held a curule magistracy, and thus the right to speak and vote was entitled to wear the toga praetexta, a white toga with a broad purple border. Additionally, the Senate, both Patricians and Equestrian Plebes, were largely responsible for seating the 50 to 75 man criminal juries, as well as acting as the prosecution and defense attorneys in the various ... • 3. The Ancient Roman Way of Life Essay The Roman way of life is different and similar to modern day. Though one may not know much over the Roman's the culture is fascinating and still remembered in history. The clothes, food, customs, and leisure are major in Roman lifestyle. During the ancient Roman time period, clothing was crucial in citizens' status of either emperor, wealthy, middle class, poor, or slave. The emperor would have worn the toga trabea, which was, "formal differences in togas which denoted social rank" (Roman Dress). The emperor himself would wear a toga with a purple stripe to show his status. As emperor, he would also wear the latus clavus, tunica palmata, and the toga palmata. In addition, Romans had amazing food and dining utensils that they used for their dinner parties and elaborate meals. During Ancient Rome, "Romans waited until the main meal of the day, the cena, (Tingay and Marks 38) to truly eat. The cena came in three courses, the appetizers, the main course, and the secundae mensae. When the food was served, it came with plenty of wine. This was because Romans had two hundred varieties or more from all over the empire. In the cena, "Food was served on dishes. Most were made of glass or pottery, but if the family was very rich there would also be ornate platters of gold and silver (Tingay and Marks 39). The Romans had spoons and knives but they preferred eating with their hands and fingers. As the slaves brought the food out on various dishes they would also pour the wine from the amphorae into a jug for easy pouring during meals. At many of the meals the host would normally have three couches, the summus, medius, and imus. (Top, middle, bottom). "The diners were seated according to their social status" (Tingay and Marks 39). When the guest arrived at the host's house for the dinner party there would be couches surrounding the tables and musicians, jugglers, acrobats, dancers, and conjurers performing. The hosts hired entertainers to the meal to make it more enjoyable and entertaining. The first course was mainly consisting of salads, seafood, eggs, and mulsum. (Wine sweetened with honey). • 4. Facts About The Movie Gladiator The movie Gladiator is based on a fictional storyline that takes place during the time of Ancient Rome. After having learned about Ancient Rome and the fashions of that time, I can say that the film Gladiator had both accurate and inaccurate representations of Ancient Roman fashion throughout. Some of the costumes, hair and makeup shown in the movie were accurate, while others were not. Janty Yates was the costume designer for Gladiator. There were certain aspects of the costumes in this film that she did accurately according to the clothing worn in Ancient Rome. In the movie, Maximus and the other slaves and prisoners of war were seen wearing light blue and/or beige tunics. As mentioned in the video lecture, tunics were extremely important in Ancient Rome for both men and women and would continue to be in the years to come. Men wore them under their togas and women wore them under their stola. Tunics on men and women were both shown in Gladiator throughout the film. Toga trabea were seen early on in the film and were worn by the emperor Caesar, and then by his son Commodus after he killed his father. The toga trabea that they wore were purple which was historically correct since only the Emperor and his sons were allowed to wear it. Their toga were also embroidered intricately which showed their high status. However, I did come across a few anachronisms regarding the color purple. In the scene where Maximus ... I also noticed that when Maximus was captured as a prisoner of war many men around him were wearing turbans on their heads, which was also not seen in Ancient Rome. • 6. The Toga In Ancient Rome A cultural significant clothing item that was used in Rome in the first and second century B.C. was the toga. The toga, as the Webster dictionary states, "is a loose flowing outer garment worn by the citizens of Rome." The outer garment typically made from wool and often portrayed in white was fabricated from a single piece of cloth and covered the whole body apart from the right arm. The toga has become a very distinctive garment not only in Roman costume but also in the history of costume. The toga was popularized and thought to originate from the Roman Empire; nonetheless, the toga's origins date back to the Etruscan period. Romans made a distinction between garments as we do today. Garments that were "put on" were referred to in Latin as inductus and were worn underneath or closests to the skin: the tunic. While garments that were "wrapped around" were referred to in Latin as amictus and were considered outerwear: the toga. Initially, both men and women wore the toga over a loincloth–a cloth that covered the genitals. However, by the second century ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The earliest toga was draped in a roughly semicircular shape with a band color around the curved edge. By the Imperial period the shape and drapery of the toga grew to be more complex. Two new added features were the sinus and the umbo. The sinus formed the over fold of the toga. The loose fold that crossed the back of the body and emerged under the right arm and then fell near the knee was the sinus. The sinus that was later widened became a pocket to carry things. The umbo was a clump of fabric vertically placed from the floor to the shoulder. The umbo was a decorative element as well as a functional one. The umbo may have helped hold the toga drapery in place and men sometimes pulled up the over fold from the back of their head to use as hood before entering a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My best friend Toga and I are heading to our school Skyscraper High. The only transportation we have is on my big Elis. Elis is just a beginner in flying and has a lot of problems with his flying. " Is this safe," exclaimed Toga. " Sure, if you want to tell yourself that," I said with an unsure look on my face. I really wasn't sure if Elis was safe to ride, but we needed ride badly because if we are late to class again we will have to sit in the freezer. She said that Mrs. Eve was about to have a nervous breakdown because of the nuclear change in on our planet. She could possibly destroy the town with all the rage she will have. Then something came to my mind. It's like a lightbulb went off in my head. I mentioned " Why don't we build a time machine? To go back in time to the day you built Mrs. Eve and stop you from mixing the wrong stuff together ." " That could work," said Nikki, " But how would we build a time machine?" I suggested, " We could use some old parts of yours from you old projects that you never finished." All I know is that we better build it fast before Mrs. Eve attacks the city. The next day we started building the time machine. I figured that just three of us couldn't build a working time machine so I sent Toga out to go get some of our friends. The only one she brought back was Jodan, the pirate. Our first try at it, we tried using Toga's laser eyes to shoot at the time machine to start it up. That wasn't a very good idea. The Statue of Asklepios is a classic Greek sculpture that portrays a person of the most perfect and athletic form. The piece is of a man standing beautifully while draped in a toga. The toga is draped over his left shoulder and cuts across to the right side of his body near his lower abdomen and then continues to cover his legs until his ankle. The toga also is draped over the pieces entire back. The piece is missing his head, his left arm and both his right foot and almost its entire right arm. The piece has a smooth, but not glossy, exterior in all of the areas except for the parts that have been broken off. Asklepios is portrayed as an incredible fit and beautiful being. The abdomen is extremely muscular and shows off the miraculous fitness of the model. The toga has many wrinkles, creating a lot of shadow and darks and lights. It also is wrapped in a way that is both loose and tight in different areas of the sculpture. It is tied right next to the left pectoral and the left armpit. This piece emphasizes the muscular body of this man while at the same time portraying him standing in such a nonchalant way through the curvature and relaxed look of the figure. Voting in the Senate could be taken by voice or show of hands in unimportant matters, but important or formal motions were decided by a quorum, or an actual physical division of the house to either side of the floor. In these cases even non–voting members were allowed to take places on either side of the issue, lending their support to a particular cause or motion, or to fulfill their client ... • 35. The Influence Of Geography In Ancient Greece When examining the effect that geography had on the civilizations of the early cities you can see that many were founded for strategic purposes. The settlers had to choose the land that would make life easiest as well as give them the best chance of developing a flourishing community. The choice was generally out of need, the need for water, food and shelter. When early leaders chose a place that was full of the necessities and provided smart options to grow a stronghold the communities would gain power and amass an empire to rival others. The civilizations of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece were such empires, they used their geographical locations and features to grow the cities, expand their empires, and trade goods making them both powerful ... Many men influenced and helped shape the great empire by strategically changing and adapting its body as more advancement were made, as more lands were conquered and as more outside influences from neighboring cities were discovered. Two such leaders of Ancient Greece were Alexander the Great and Pericles. Pericles, though he was a great general and lead his country well he was a different kind of leader then Alexander the Great was. Pericles was a scholar and he promoted literature and philosophy throughout Athens. The capital city grew as the center of all the intellectual inspiration, the center for art and education and as the land of democracy. Pericles saw the expansion of the mind occur in Greece. He saw the addition of great medical thinkers like Hippocrates. He saw the expansion of the written play and he saw the humanities explode leaving the world with many great works of art still revered today. One great work that Pericles instituted was the public works job system offering jobs and allowing lower classed citizen's access to government offices. Pericles lead well but fell into critic for his shyness, often choosing to stay out of the spotlight. Pericles fell victim to the plague and Athens suffered greatly for many years afterward. The country never really got back on track after such a tragedy. The country was defeated by the Spartans and the city of Athens fell to ruin. No other leader was regarded as effective opting to be popular instead ultimately affecting the political and social structure for the worse and plunging Athens and Greece into a sort of darkness for over 30 years. The wars between Sparta and Athens lasted 27 years, changing the thinking of its people, forcing the government from a peace seeking country to a waring state. This change is what brought forth Alexander the Great and why he was a great leader. Alexander the Great was a considered the best military ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A similarity in the scenery of both plays was that both written plays took place in Greece. A Midsummer Night's dream took place in Athens and Oedipus Rex took place in Thebes. For most of the film in both plays the play took place outside in a nature aspect. Most of the scenes were through a dessert and a forest. Something different in the scenery is that in Oedipus Rex the scene was more desert like and sad as the drought took place. As page (1130 line 28) says "Look around you, see with your own eyes, the red waves of death... Thebes is dying". Death being a main problem in the play made for more darker feelings. The lighting during those tragic moments were darker making the set seem sad or tragic like. During the movie after the shot taken from when we saw Jocasta before her death the room got darker and more gloomy making us have a view of death or a bad feeling. In the film A Midsummer Night's Dream the scenery was in the forest and the lighting was bright making the set seem more cheerful. As the film was already bright throughout the play there would be certain scenes where the lighting would just get brighter during imaginations or dreams making us believe that the dreams were delightful. Towards the end of the film we saw glitter and a bright setting which was meant to make us feel cheerful and that peace is restored by the Fairies. In (Act 5 scene 1) the story will be happy towards the end and as the fairies bless the house, peace is restored, " By us shall blessed be; So shall all couples three, Ever true in loving be". Ending the scene with glitter and bright light makes for a happy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Afterwards was the big moment. When all of a sudden, the ballot and scores went missing. So we stood up there for 10 minutes, quietly waiting for the ballet to reappear. It was so silent you could have heard the crickets outside. Until Lanelle broke silence and made us stall by singing, dancing and doing push ups. Which was probably the most embarrassing thing they could make us do since I sound like a dying whale when I sing. After the ballet was recovered 7 more minutes later they first announced Mr.Popularity, which was the next best thing. The way to win that was to raise the most money for the charity you choose. The Importance Of Roman Clothing In Ancient Roman Clothing in ancient Rome was so important to the Romans that they specially trained slaves to assist them in putting on their clothes (Roman Dress 3). Not only was it time–consuming and difficult to put on their style of clothing, but the clothes were also often heavy and uncomfortable (McManus 3). In spite of the clothing being troublesome, it was incredibly useful; with one glance, you could see every Roman's wealth, rank, and personality. These dyes were all from various natural sources (Colors of Roman Clothing 1). Wealthier people wore indigo and crimson, which were expensive (Colors of Roman Clothing 3). Indigo had to be imported from India, and crimson was derived from insects (Colors of Roman Clothing 3). Very light colors were also an honor to wear. Some politicians would even go as far as using white chalk on their togas in order to stand out (Roman Dress 4). With all these specifics, a Roman could easily tell how much money someone had based just on the color or type of fabric they were wearing. Another way that clothes allowed Romans to distinguish between rank was which garments that a person wore. Poor women usually only wore one piece of clothing: a tunic (Lewis 1). However, a tunic was considered an undergarment for wealthy women (Lewis 2). The women that could afford more clothes wore a stola over their tunics (Lewis 2). Stolas were flouncy dresses held together at the shoulders by golden rings called fibulae (Lewis 2). Stolas could also be embroidered with nature–inspired images like fruit, leaves, and flowers (Lewis 4). If a woman was extremely wealthy, she wore a palla over her stola (Roman Dress 7). A palla was much like a shawl. If a woman wore a palla, it was considered a privilege and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
