The Transportation Industry
INTRODUCTION
Fraud is a pervasive and omnipresent threat in the modern business environment. While the controls
to help mitigate the risk have become increasingly sophisticated, so too have the methods in which
employees, managers and even third parties defraud victim entities. While some industries seem
more at risk than others it is important to recognize the vulnerability that is common to all of them.
One industry that seems to be able to avoid the worst of fraudulent acts is the Transportation
Industry. Through use of time tested control methods and avant–garde procedures to help mitigate
business risk, the industry is able to consistently place ahead of others in rates of fraud occurrences.

An example is an airlines heavy reliance on real–time systems to book flights, manage flights, and
make sure planes aren't flying into each other in mid–air (McMahon, 2014).
The airline industry has recently been focusing inwardly on revenue growth, yield management, and
balance sheet strength. The permanent threat of terrorism creates an element of uncertainty when it
comes to an airline company's operations. There are significant challenges to implement effective
security and risk management systems. Large investments in required infrastructures are correlated
to these challenges (PriceWaterhouseCoopers, 2014). There is also a strong demand for public
transport recently as a result of environmental awareness and congestion. Railroads have difficulty
meeting this demand because of a limited infrastructure capacity. This public transport competes
with roads for investment funds and many planning processes for railroad projects take a long time
to deliver (PriceWaterhouseCoopers, 2014). The shipping subsector contributes an extreme amount
to global transportation and logistics. It has been historically cyclical with volatility in vessel values,
shareholder returns, and freight rates. The international economic and political environment also has
a large effect on shipping. The business environment is challenging with a few specifics risks. Risks

Case Study Of SARK Logistics
Introduction
The First Stone of SARK Logistics was placed down in 2008 as a Custom House Agent in Delhi.
After getting an optimistic response from its precious clients they took a step further and instituted
SARK LOSIGTICS as an international freight forwarder.
The SARK Logistics has a perfect lineup of logistics business units inside the field of transportation,
forwarding, distribution and other logistics services. It provides both types of freight forwarding
services, air freight forwarding and sea freight forwarding. If one starts exploring for the words to
define the quality of services offered by SARK Logistics, the terms like unexampled and notable
appear out to be most appropriate
The essence of their services lies in their technique where attention is paid to each and every
possible aspect. Their team of qualified and licit personnel handles Custom clearance via

Its evident from the survey that the company's present customers got to know about it from other
exporters/importers or friends. Therefore it is important for SARK Logistics to amplify its
marketing activities and market itself through internet and newspapers/magazines. This would help
them increase its customers base especially when not many new customers have been added in the
last 3 years.
 The company should make an effort to increase its customers particularly exporters as the number
of exporters are about half in relation to the number of exporters. Also with the Government
proposing to impose an anti–dumping duty on the import of tyres, the company might lose its
customers who import tyres due to the duty affecting their imports. Additionally the company
should focus more on increasing its exporting customers as the 'Make in India' campaign gains
momentum in the economy, there will be a chance of exports rising and thus it'll be easy to find
customers who are willing to

Value of Shipping Your Golf Clubs VS Checking Bags
Golf clubs travel to different countries to participate in numerous competitions. The traveling of
these golf clubs requires a proper plan that will not harm the budget plans of the organization. Some
people opt to use airlines or checking bags when transporting their luggage from one region to
another. Although the process may initially seem to be cheap, it is expensive in the long–run,
because there are some hidden charges that the commercial air companies apply to the luggage.
Therefore, the golf club may experience economic challenges if they opt to use the airlines rather

Personal Identity : Personal Essay : My Identity
The most difficult thing to tell anyone about me is my identity, not that there's much there. It's the
fact that I'm a privileged white male; I have no history. The only thing about me is that I'm different
than everyone else. But isn't everybody? Many people say they're a cat in a dog world, a fish
swimming among sharks. But the reality is that yes, you are different, but everybody else is too. You
are unique; everybody is. Most would say I'm idiosyncratic, a stupidly complicated synonym for
weird. I do the same things as everybody else, but in my own way. For instance, in elementary
school, I read around 100 books, I used to knit, I can juggle, solve a rubik's cube and so much more.
When I was around five to twelve years old, I made things nonstop. Whether it was an origami
Darth Vader to a PVC bow and arrow. I did this whenever I had spare time. Sometimes whole days
(2–7 hours) would be spent just making things. I would either go online and look up how to make
something, or I would wing it and do it with no guidelines. I think I loved doing this so much
because I hate being bored. The sounds of cutting and sanding, the smells of sawdust, the feel of
polished wood, and the image of the finished project looming in your mind are all things I've come
to love. One day I got this game, Portal 2. I played it a bunch, then decided to make the portal gun (a
gun that shot portals) from the game. For a long time I searched for a template, not finding any. It
was a few days later that I found one. It was a paper craft; something created fully out of paper. I
spent a little bit deliberating whether I would actually build it, as it as fifty–two pages. I decided to
print it. Ten minutes later, I took that paper and got to work. The first page looked extremely tedious
to cut. It had a seemingly infinite amounts of points and curves, taunting me, saying I couldn't do it.
So I whipped out my scissors and got to it. Another ten minutes later, the first page had been cut. I
started to fold the pieces, then realized I didn't know how to put them together. I looked online for
anything but found nothing, so I just decided to wing it. For a few months I kept cutting and taping.
There were countless times when I cut a piece wrong

Application Of The Concepts / Theories
: APPLICATION OF THE CONCEPTS/THEORIES IN MY CURRENT JOB
In my job as 3PL (Third party logistics service provider) shipping (transportation across boarders) is
one of the integrated services that we offer to our clients. To carry out this activity, we are constantly
faced with the dilema of choosing the transportation mode that will reconcile effectiveness and
efficiency. While keeping in mind the expectations of our clients, we must not forget our profit
margins – which are the bases of our business sustainability. Besides deciding what mode of
transportation to use, we are equally responsible for choosing between one carrier and the other. The
choice of carrier is determined by a series of factors such reliability, availability of equipment,
regularity, price/rates etc
Many at–times the most suitable thing we do is to put up a combination of several modes of
transportation for the same trip. Usually we opt for the land transport mode (combining road and rail
where possible) at the levels of pre–carriage and on–carriage, while choosing between maritime and
air modes for the carriage (principal cross boarder journey). The choice between sea and air modes
for the principal journey is done taking into consideration a number of factors such as nature and
volume/weight of shipment, transit time, availability of infrastructures, geographical location etc.
What ever change of mode is operated, it is important to note that goods remain in the same loading
unit.

Biovail Corporation: Revenue Recognition and FOB Sales Accounting
Biovail Corporation was a large publicly traded pharmaceutical company located in Canada which
merged with Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. in 2011 (SEC, 2011). Said organization
engaged in the development and large–scale manufacturing of pharmaceutical products (Chapman,
2009). As such, products were shipped to domestic and international distributors with products to
United States customers shipped via truck transport.
Additionally, the organization was scrutinized for its revenue recognition of an accident on
September 30, 2010 rendering the shipment unsalable until analyzed for quality. Said accident
resulted in several analysts downgrading the organization's stock and issuing sell recommendations.
Finally, such recommendations resulted in significant declines in stock prices and revocation of
stock coverage. As such, questions arose as to the accuracy of revenue loss claims and aggressive
accounting practices.

International Trade And Its Impact On The Modern Economy
1. Introduction
For most people, international trade has shaped their daily living, from their morning cup of coffee,
the fuel in their car, and host of other modern conveniences are dependent in whole or fully on
global supply chains. To show the complexity of the modern economy, based on "The Travels of a
T–Shirt in the Global Economy," Planet Money followed harvested cotton on its course from
Mississippi through Indonesia to become fabric, and the fabric was shipped to either Bangladesh
and Columbia to be printed, before finally arriving back in the United States in the form of a
finished T–Shirt. On any day, consumption patterns depend upon many similar supply chains. As
such, chances are fairly good that at some point in time, the product, or its components, moved on
an international vessel. The maritime industry represents one of the oldest, and most integrated,
networked industries. Given the importance of maritime trade, regulations, traditions and laws
represent hundreds of years of maritime cases, while at the same time the industry remains fairly
dynamic, as evident by the changes as the result of the next shipwreck, trade agreement/dispute, or
new technology. This complexity depends upon balancing existing laws and traditions with
emerging regulatory oversight against the desire to allow global commerce growth makes maritime
shipping an interesting case study regarding network economics.
This chapter will give an overview and economic characterization

Seaborne trade (a business), which carries more than 90% of all world commerce, is a volatile and
risky business due to the interplay of demand and supply and it effect on freight rates. The
rollercoaster nature of the business especially in respect to freight rates demand that critical attention
is payed to the management of risks.
In the past decades, freight rates have risen to their highest peaks and have also equally fallen to
their lowest level, to the advantage and disadvantage of ship–owners and charterers respectively.

This may change in the future as the market grows further. In other cases, there is the potential of

Conclusion
Shipping derivatives contracts in the form of Container Freight Swap Agreements and Freight Swap
Options are risk mitigating measures especially in the uncertain world of shipping business. To all
stakeholders in the shipping business in Ghana and other parts of the world, the use of shipping
derivatives can ensure sustainability in the rather volatile period in which ship–owners and charters

To avoid the risks associated with fluctuating freight rates and volatility as witnessed over the last
couple of years, companies must ensure that they consider hedging. Hedging helps in controlling the
cash inflow and outflow as dictated by both internal and external parameters (Kavussanos &
Visvikis 2006). Operating costs, which is affected by among other things bunker prices, should be
addressed through hedging to ensure that companies maximize their profits and that the share prices
remain competitive and profitable.
Being registered in the London Stock Exchange, Hellenic Company has witnessed a significant
reduction in its share prices, mainly due to changes in the freight rates. The charges associated with
transporting gods and commodities from one region to another have been affected by among other
things, competition, bunker prices and inflation. The companies in the shipping business have to
adopt many strategies to minimize the risks associated with freight services (Schwartz & Smith
2000). Change in technology and services would influence management of cash inflows and
outflows as it would influence change in freight rates and hence maximize profits.

structure of this organization has enabled it to become a major competitor in its field. Examination
of the structure and internal workings of this multifaceted association demonstrates that it has been
streamlined and set up such that has augmented its proficiency in the market. FedEx has made an
organization that has fiscally been very effective. In any event, this does not infer that it doesn 't

The two firms are in a steady fight to keep up piece of the overall industry in their separate

to this same pattern with its buy of Kinko 's). With regards to the worldwide transportation
advertise, DHL is thought to be the pioneer. FedEx, be that as it may, profit significantly when DHL
exited the US expedited service advertise a couple of years back. The company is trying to compete
with DHL by obtaining companies that are already reputable in various international markets and
investing heavily in infrastructure (planes, trucks, routes, and hubs) in those locales. The threat of
new entrants realistically competing with FedEx is very low and "this is due in large part to the huge

investment that would be needed to obtain the appropriate "levels of planes and vehicles combined
with building up the necessary infrastructure is mind boggling" (strategic report). Besides, it is

How Did The Economic Revolution Affect Ancient China
The medieval Chinese economic revolution impacted China in many ways. The Chinese were able
to import and export goods at an increasing rate. There were advances in China's economy. The
demand and the amount of goods produced increased. The productions of goods were affected by
the migration to different areas. It also brought about variations in everyday life in the population
and how they interacted with each other.
During the revolution, trade adapted and soared to great heights. Farmers had stopped producing just
for themselves, but producing surplus and selling the surplus to the market. In return, they bought
things such as tea, wine, and oil. When they needed to ship commercial crops that they started to
grow, the coastal shipping and inland shipping industries were created. Marco polo claimed to see
no less than fifteen thousand vessels at a single port. Because of the booming shipping industry, a
device used to tell direction was invented. Its name was the compass. It originally was a needle
floating in water and was attached to a stem. It eventually was updated and put in a case with a glass
top for use on ships. The first known use of the compass was around 1119. Foreign trade also
flourished in this period. In 1225 the superintendent of customs wrote his account of what foreign
places traders had visited. It included sketches of important trade cities. He also listed some
important goods to come out of important cities. He also talked of how Chinese merchants

A New, Improved Way to Package Goods for Transport with...
1. Introduction
Liner Shipping developed new ways of packaging goods for transport; their growth has influenced
the global trade. Even during economic crisis there has been tendency to move more and more
goods through this means. Their growth influenced the efficiency of the whole supply chain. The
progress of this trade has been faster than other sectors (Brooks 2000). Global environment of
trading is constantly changing and Geographic concentrations of interlinked business and factories
called clusters are making the trade pattern more difficult to predict. Like all other businesses the

2013). Therefore, liner shipping companies must be extremely careful with ship investment
decisions. Insufficient investment can reduction in market share and may lead to losing market
position, while huge investment may affect the financial stability of the company. (Fan & Luo
2013).
These decisions also affect the economy as they affect the global logistics network, especially when
the economy is recovering from the recent financial crisis. Huge investments in the liner shipping
have led to bigger ships and over supply of cargo spaces, which in turn affected the demand–supply
equilibrium leading to low freight rate under usage of cargo spaces (Clarkson PLC 2014).
Global container trade(1963–2013) (UNCTAD, 2013, p.23) Liner shipping companies are still
struggling hard with capacity management due to deliveries of ships accounting for 1.3 million
TEU. Most of the companies are reducing their services which enabled them to push through rate
increases temporarily, But the profit margin is still limited (Clarkson PLC 2014). To cope with the
market environment focusing on intense pricing pressure, shipping companies have started to
cooperate in many forms, ranging from slot–chartering, vessel sharing, cargo sharing, strategic
alliances, mergers and acquisitions etc. The main reason for alliances is due to the need of cargo
volumes in the scale of operation and to spread the risk associated with investment in the huge
vessels.

Industry Competition And Price Sensitive Customer Trend
Problem 1: Industry Competition and Price Sensitive Customer Trend
Zappos business strategy is to differentiate itself amongst similar businesses by offering an
unparalleled customer service creating a "WOW" experience for its customers. This
strategy is an integral part of the organizational culture and is one of its core values. Each
and every member of the company is trained in customer service irrespective of their
business function and is equipped to provide their organization, suppliers and customers
with superior service. With e–commerce being a viable business option after the Internet
boom, a large number of companies have cropped up in the last decade creating intense
competition to capture market share. Some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The disadvantages are customer switching/loss of
sale and internal cannibalization.
Alternative 2: The current feature of customer rating and product feedback is insufficient
to gain a competitive advantage. Zappos can adopt a strategy of creating a customized
search engine in collaboration with Google or Bing and create a price comparison tool that
lets customers compare Zappos price with other retailers and competitors, similar to
Kayak. Zappos using this feature can highlight its superior service advantage by displaying
an all–inclusive price for the product including shipping charges as compared to an
additional shipping charge displayed by its competitor. Zappos can also offer the lowest
shipping cost in the industry separately and develop it as a competitive edge.
Alternative 3: Another strategy that can be used is to create a vertical site that offers
authentic used products for skiing, surfing, skateboarding, furniture, home décor, cars etc.
at a low cost. This strategy helps Zappos cater to a customer segments that are extremely
price conscious. Low– mid income level customers should be the target audience. Zappos
could create a profitable business by offering high quality used products at a low cost to
this segment of the market.

Transportation and How it Affects Logistics
Transportation is one of the largest industry in the world. It is the most costly and time consuming of
the supply chain. Transportation refers to the movement of a product from one destination to
another. This process begins from the supply chain to the consumer, for as we know that products
are rarely produced in the same location. We as people depend on transportation. Because it moves
our goods and it moves us as a people from one place to another.
Transportation is a key element in the logistic chain. It joins together those components that are
considered to be separated. In order for transportation and logistics to work together successfully
there must be good management between them. It plays a major role in connecting it all together.
Supply chain management is defined as a continuously evolving management philosophy that seeks
to unify the collective productive competencies and resources of the business functions found both
within the enterprise and outside in the firm's allied business partners located along intersecting
supply channels into highly competitive, customer–enriching supply system focused on developing
innovative solutions and synchronizing the flow of marketplace products, services, and information
to create unique, individualized sources of customer value (Ross, 1998).
SCM can be divided into three main groups: purchase, manufacture, and transport (Thomas et al.,
1996). The focus is on transportation. There are different modes of transportation.

Import stripping area is the Area inside the terminal that the customs inspection activities take place
and then the importer has option to strip the container inside this area or take it outside the port to
his premises. This Area and the activities happening inside it has become the source of empty
containers for export because this empty containers go to Shipping Line Container Yard where the
line receive container to decide what to do with it.
Low and poor performance in the Import stripping area will negatively affect the rest of the
activities. In this document we will present only the export Activates which is primary activities of
the value chain and is directly affect the customer experience.
The pain points are mainly resulted from lack of containers handling equipment and the behaviour
of labour in the terminal. For example, if 100 Containers stripped per day (in our system Log File)
50 containers inside Import stripping area and 50 containers outside the port 10 Containers only will
be shifted from the Import stripping area to Shipping Line Container Yard to use for export at that
day and all 50 from outside will reach Shipping Line Container Yard. While exporters need 70
containers per day for their cargo.
The current situation is we provide 10 containers from Import stripping area plus 50 containers
returned from outside the terminal. this resulted in losing 10 containers from export volume or delay
them to the next day.

Differences between Distribution Centers and Warehouses
worker
While distribution centers and warehouses come from the same sector of services, in storage
management. They are actually quite different. With both of them providing different services
within their niche. However for you to fully understand the differences, you must first know what
each of them carry out on a day to day basis.
Warehouses:
Warehouses are buildings or structures which store goods. Normally for retail purposes. These
goods are kept within the warehouse until the retailer in question needs them, either to stock their
shelves or to provide them directly to their customers. You will find that large retailers such as
Argos, own their own warehouses, while smaller independent retailers tend to go for a third party
experience. This is because for most smaller retailers, the overhead costs of having their own
warehouse is not feasible. However the same can be said for larger retail chains. For large retail
changes it is not feasible to be paying a third party to store their goods. As they tend to have millions
of units of products, which take up a lot of room.
Warehouses tend to only ship to retailers. Rather than to individual customers, which makes their
job comparatively easier compared to that of a distribution center. As they can send items in bulk,
cutting down costs of individual shipping and wrapping. It also means that, storing the stock is some
what easier for them too. As they only need to separate the goods into which retailers they belong to.

Container Imbalances And The Context Of The Global Economy
1 Container Imbalances in the Context of the Global Economy
1.1 Economic Situation of the Shipping Industry
To introduce into the context relevant for the processing of the case, it will firstly be shown which
circumstances shape the industry. It will also be demonstrated how and why the latest economic
developments are influencing the container shipping business and consequently are relevant for the
following work.
As nearly 90% of the worldwide transported goods are moved by ship and 60% of those goods are
containerized , a high dependency of global trade and the demand for container transports can be
detected. Therefore trends like global sourcing coming along with the globalization are highly
influenced by various variables which might for example include the following :
Population growth
Social standards and income
Labor cost
Language and communication
Political and legal aspects
Export figures
Degree of industrialization
Currency fluctuations
Technological developments (e.g. Internet)
Linking the world container volume to the global Real GDP as an indicator for the development of
the overall economy (cf Figure 1), it can be detected that the shipping industry suffered more
dramatically than expected from the worldwide economic crisis in 2008 when the financial markets
crashed . Figure 1: Correlation between Economy and Container Trade (Index 2000: 100; data

Analysis of Intra-Asia Market
Chapter 4: Findings and Discussions
In the first section of this chapter, the interview result is being analysed. Following that, the research
done in phase 1 and the interview results gathering in phase 2 is combined to formulate the
Opportunities, threats and uncertainties in Intra–Asia container trade. Finally in the last section of
this chapter, we will forecast the future outlook of Intra–Asia for the next five years.
4.1 Analysis of Intra–Asia Market
We had tailored our interview questions to gather professional opinions on the future outlook of
Intra–Asia and Intra–Asia container shipping and how they could impact and affect the ship–owners
and operators (Appendix D).
Based on the interviews results (Appendix E) we had gathered, 80% of the respondents believe that
the current shipping market is now in its recovery from the longest downturn in three decades in the
shipping industry. It is largely due to the cause of overcapacity of ships in the market that have
depressed freight rates since the end of a shipping boom in 2008 (Shipping Industry sees an end to
five–year downturn, 2014). The current recovery seem to be fragile in Europe, though it is gaining
traction in the US and UK, while emerging market is showing signs of slow growth (Howard, 2014).
All the main shipping segments remain heavy on the supply side, causing great volatility in freight
rates (Figure 10). Fortunately, the industry has now improved its ability to apply counter–balancing
measures that had

This move would have severe tradeoffs when it comes to customers and UPS. Currently Zappos is
UPS' number 3 next day air shipping customer. By not utilizing this service it could have a
significant impact on UPS and Zappos relationship with UPS. Even though Zappos would still use
UPS for the ground shipping, UPS would see a significant revenue drop since next day air shipping
is more expensive.
Since only 60% of customers would receive their order within 2 days the other 40% would not get
that WOW factor of fast delivery. Zappos is known for its fast delivery and service and without that
customer satisfaction may drop. Having 40% of customers not being having a WOW experience

3. Expanding the business
I would expand Zappos by extending the supply web to current retailers such as Target or Macy's.
Take Target for example. On Target.com they have an extensive shoe selection which the inventory
needs to be stored in a Target distribution center. Zappos could hold this inventory and make the
shipments when someone orders shoes on Target.com. This would benefit both Target and Zappos.
Target would be able to reduce their shoe inventory in their distribution centers. They would also be
able to offer wider selection of shoes on Target.com. Zappos would benefit by gaining a large

The profit of exporters decreased significantly, because most Chinese exporters relied on the refund
of export tax to maintain their business under such fierce global competition at that time. To avoid
or reduce loss, exporters rushed to export their cargo before July 1st, which resulted in serious
overbooking in June and incurred a large demand of shipping capacity, accordingly, the price of
ocean freight per container sored to the highest in past ten years and many shipping companies made
additional orders to build new vessels. While, the next year, 2008, the global economy crisis broke
out, recession weakened the purchasing power of Europe dramatically; consequently, export from
China to Europe declined sharp. Freight dropped. Also large amount of shipping capacity became

Special software called Terminal Operating Systems (TOS) is used to assist in the loading of
dangerous goods. The planner inserts into the system, however the software may or may not be able
to properly stow cargo by means of checking for bad stowage & segregation against the latest
international requirements. It is highly recommended to check stowage manually and by human

The Transportation Industry

  • 1. The Transportation Industry INTRODUCTION Fraud is a pervasive and omnipresent threat in the modern business environment. While the controls to help mitigate the risk have become increasingly sophisticated, so too have the methods in which employees, managers and even third parties defraud victim entities. While some industries seem more at risk than others it is important to recognize the vulnerability that is common to all of them. One industry that seems to be able to avoid the worst of fraudulent acts is the Transportation Industry. Through use of time tested control methods and avant–garde procedures to help mitigate business risk, the industry is able to consistently place ahead of others in rates of fraud occurrences. MAIN BODY Background The transportation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An example is an airlines heavy reliance on real–time systems to book flights, manage flights, and make sure planes aren't flying into each other in mid–air (McMahon, 2014). The airline industry has recently been focusing inwardly on revenue growth, yield management, and balance sheet strength. The permanent threat of terrorism creates an element of uncertainty when it comes to an airline company's operations. There are significant challenges to implement effective security and risk management systems. Large investments in required infrastructures are correlated to these challenges (PriceWaterhouseCoopers, 2014). There is also a strong demand for public transport recently as a result of environmental awareness and congestion. Railroads have difficulty meeting this demand because of a limited infrastructure capacity. This public transport competes with roads for investment funds and many planning processes for railroad projects take a long time to deliver (PriceWaterhouseCoopers, 2014). The shipping subsector contributes an extreme amount to global transportation and logistics. It has been historically cyclical with volatility in vessel values, shareholder returns, and freight rates. The international economic and political environment also has a large effect on shipping. Its evident from the survey that the company's present customers got to know about it from other exporters/importers or friends. Therefore it is important for SARK Logistics to amplify its marketing activities and market itself through internet and newspapers/magazines. This would help them increase its customers base especially when not many new customers have been added in the last 3 years.  The company should make an effort to increase its customers particularly exporters as the number of exporters are about half in relation to the number of exporters. Also with the Government proposing to impose an anti–dumping duty on the import of tyres, the company might lose its customers who import tyres due to the duty affecting their imports. Additionally the company should focus more on increasing its exporting customers as the 'Make in India' campaign gains momentum in the economy, there will be a chance of exports rising and thus it'll be easy to find customers who are willing to ... For example, Europe back to Subamarang is the back–haul, but the area from Singapore to Subamarang is the head–haul. Reefer box, as known as refrigerated container, is listed in the Hanjin' potential products list. As a result, Hanjin can maximize EQ–equipment turnover. Some ports in Europe, such as Felixtowe in Great Britain, have a surplus of reefer boxes, thus the company can adjust the rate higher in order to limit the trade into such area while surplus areas, such as Barcelona in Spain, are offered a reasonable low rate to give Asia–Europe service promotions. • 13. Personal Identity : Personal Essay : My Identity The most difficult thing to tell anyone about me is my identity, not that there's much there. It's the fact that I'm a privileged white male; I have no history. The only thing about me is that I'm different than everyone else. But isn't everybody? Many people say they're a cat in a dog world, a fish swimming among sharks. But the reality is that yes, you are different, but everybody else is too. You are unique; everybody is. Most would say I'm idiosyncratic, a stupidly complicated synonym for weird. I do the same things as everybody else, but in my own way. For instance, in elementary school, I read around 100 books, I used to knit, I can juggle, solve a rubik's cube and so much more. When I was around five to twelve years old, I made things nonstop. Whether it was an origami Darth Vader to a PVC bow and arrow. I did this whenever I had spare time. Sometimes whole days (2–7 hours) would be spent just making things. I would either go online and look up how to make something, or I would wing it and do it with no guidelines. I think I loved doing this so much because I hate being bored. The sounds of cutting and sanding, the smells of sawdust, the feel of polished wood, and the image of the finished project looming in your mind are all things I've come to love. One day I got this game, Portal 2. I played it a bunch, then decided to make the portal gun (a gun that shot portals) from the game. For a long time I searched for a template, not finding any. It was a few days later that I found one. It was a paper craft; something created fully out of paper. I spent a little bit deliberating whether I would actually build it, as it as fifty–two pages. I decided to print it. Ten minutes later, I took that paper and got to work. The first page looked extremely tedious to cut. It had a seemingly infinite amounts of points and curves, taunting me, saying I couldn't do it. So I whipped out my scissors and got to it. Another ten minutes later, the first page had been cut. I started to fold the pieces, then realized I didn't know how to put them together. I looked online for anything but found nothing, so I just decided to wing it. For a few months I kept cutting and taping. There were countless times when I cut a piece wrong ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Application Of The Concepts / Theories : APPLICATION OF THE CONCEPTS/THEORIES IN MY CURRENT JOB In my job as 3PL (Third party logistics service provider) shipping (transportation across boarders) is one of the integrated services that we offer to our clients. To carry out this activity, we are constantly faced with the dilema of choosing the transportation mode that will reconcile effectiveness and efficiency. While keeping in mind the expectations of our clients, we must not forget our profit margins – which are the bases of our business sustainability. Besides deciding what mode of transportation to use, we are equally responsible for choosing between one carrier and the other. The choice of carrier is determined by a series of factors such reliability, availability of equipment, regularity, price/rates etc Many at–times the most suitable thing we do is to put up a combination of several modes of transportation for the same trip. Usually we opt for the land transport mode (combining road and rail where possible) at the levels of pre–carriage and on–carriage, while choosing between maritime and air modes for the carriage (principal cross boarder journey). The choice between sea and air modes for the principal journey is done taking into consideration a number of factors such as nature and volume/weight of shipment, transit time, availability of infrastructures, geographical location etc. What ever change of mode is operated, it is important to note that goods remain in the same loading unit. • 17. Biovail Corporation : Revenue Recognition And Fob Sales... Biovail Corporation: Revenue Recognition and FOB Sales Accounting Biovail Corporation was a large publicly traded pharmaceutical company located in Canada which merged with Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. in 2011 (SEC, 2011). Said organization engaged in the development and large–scale manufacturing of pharmaceutical products (Chapman, 2009). As such, products were shipped to domestic and international distributors with products to United States customers shipped via truck transport. Additionally, the organization was scrutinized for its revenue recognition of an accident on September 30, 2010 rendering the shipment unsalable until analyzed for quality. Said accident resulted in several analysts downgrading the organization's stock and issuing sell recommendations. The maritime industry represents one of the oldest, and most integrated, networked industries. Given the importance of maritime trade, regulations, traditions and laws represent hundreds of years of maritime cases, while at the same time the industry remains fairly dynamic, as evident by the changes as the result of the next shipwreck, trade agreement/dispute, or new technology. The Chinese were able to import and export goods at an increasing rate. There were advances in China's economy. The demand and the amount of goods produced increased. The productions of goods were affected by the migration to different areas. It also brought about variations in everyday life in the population and how they interacted with each other. During the revolution, trade adapted and soared to great heights. Farmers had stopped producing just for themselves, but producing surplus and selling the surplus to the market. In return, they bought things such as tea, wine, and oil. When they needed to ship commercial crops that they started to grow, the coastal shipping and inland shipping industries were created. Marco polo claimed to see no less than fifteen thousand vessels at a single port. Because of the booming shipping industry, a device used to tell direction was invented. Its name was the compass. It originally was a needle floating in water and was attached to a stem. It eventually was updated and put in a case with a glass top for use on ships. The first known use of the compass was around 1119. Foreign trade also flourished in this period. In 1225 the superintendent of customs wrote his account of what foreign places traders had visited. Insufficient investment can reduction in market share and may lead to losing market position, while huge investment may affect the financial stability of the company. (Fan & Luo 2013). These decisions also affect the economy as they affect the global logistics network, especially when the economy is recovering from the recent financial crisis. Huge investments in the liner shipping have led to bigger ships and over supply of cargo spaces, which in turn affected the demand–supply equilibrium leading to low freight rate under usage of cargo spaces (Clarkson PLC 2014). Global container trade(1963–2013) (UNCTAD, 2013, p.23) Liner shipping companies are still struggling hard with capacity management due to deliveries of ships accounting for 1.3 million TEU. Most of the companies are reducing their services which enabled them to push through rate increases temporarily, But the profit margin is still limited (Clarkson PLC 2014). To cope with the market environment focusing on intense pricing pressure, shipping companies have started to cooperate in many forms, ranging from slot–chartering, vessel sharing, cargo sharing, strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions etc. The main reason for alliances is due to the need of cargo volumes in the scale of operation and to spread the risk associated with investment in the huge vessels. ... • 54. Transportation and How it Affects Logistics Transportation is one of the largest industry in the world. It is the most costly and time consuming of the supply chain. Transportation refers to the movement of a product from one destination to another. This process begins from the supply chain to the consumer, for as we know that products are rarely produced in the same location. We as people depend on transportation. Because it moves our goods and it moves us as a people from one place to another. Transportation is a key element in the logistic chain. It joins together those components that are considered to be separated. In order for transportation and logistics to work together successfully there must be good management between them. It plays a major role in connecting it all together. Supply chain management is defined as a continuously evolving management philosophy that seeks to unify the collective productive competencies and resources of the business functions found both within the enterprise and outside in the firm's allied business partners located along intersecting supply channels into highly competitive, customer–enriching supply system focused on developing innovative solutions and synchronizing the flow of marketplace products, services, and information to create unique, individualized sources of customer value (Ross, 1998). • 58. Differences between Distribution Centers and Warehouses worker While distribution centers and warehouses come from the same sector of services, in storage management. They are actually quite different. With both of them providing different services within their niche. However for you to fully understand the differences, you must first know what each of them carry out on a day to day basis. Warehouses: Warehouses are buildings or structures which store goods. Normally for retail purposes. These goods are kept within the warehouse until the retailer in question needs them, either to stock their shelves or to provide them directly to their customers. You will find that large retailers such as Argos, own their own warehouses, while smaller independent retailers tend to go for a third party experience. This is because for most smaller retailers, the overhead costs of having their own warehouse is not feasible. However the same can be said for larger retail chains. For large retail changes it is not feasible to be paying a third party to store their goods. As they tend to have millions of units of products, which take up a lot of room. Warehouses tend to only ship to retailers. Rather than to individual customers, which makes their job comparatively easier compared to that of a distribution center. As they can send items in bulk, cutting down costs of individual shipping and wrapping. It also means that, storing the stock is some what easier for them too. As they only need to separate the goods into which retailers they belong to. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Based on the interviews results (Appendix E) we had gathered, 80% of the respondents believe that the current shipping market is now in its recovery from the longest downturn in three decades in the shipping industry. It is largely due to the cause of overcapacity of ships in the market that have depressed freight rates since the end of a shipping boom in 2008 (Shipping Industry sees an end to five–year downturn, 2014). The current recovery seem to be fragile in Europe, though it is gaining traction in the US and UK, while emerging market is showing signs of slow growth (Howard, 2014). All the main shipping segments remain heavy on the supply side, causing great volatility in freight rates (Figure 10). They developed an Extranet which allows venders to see on hand inventory, sales and pricing and margins. By not utilizing this service it could have a significant impact on UPS and Zappos relationship with UPS. Even though Zappos would still use UPS for the ground shipping, UPS would see a significant revenue drop since next day air shipping is more expensive. Since only 60% of customers would receive their order within 2 days the other 40% would not get that WOW factor of fast delivery. Zappos is known for its fast delivery and service and without that customer satisfaction may drop. Having 40% of customers not being having a WOW experience could significantly hurt the customer base. 3. Expanding the business I would expand Zappos by extending the supply web to current retailers such as Target or Macy's. Take Target for example. On Target.com they have an extensive shoe selection which the inventory needs to be stored in a Target distribution center. Zappos could hold this inventory and make the shipments when someone orders shoes on Target.com. This would benefit both Target and Zappos. Target would be able to reduce their shoe inventory in their distribution centers. They would also be able to offer wider selection of shoes on Target.com. Zappos would benefit by gaining a large portion of new customers who are regular Target guests. A second way I would expand Zappos would be to rely more on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
