Pros And Cons Of Racism In America
Do you think America is institutionally racist? Who is at a disadvantage? Institutional racism means
that there is a systematic way for certain groups of people to be put on a lower level or have a
disadvantage than another group of people. There was definitely institutional racism in America
about fifty years ago, and I know that because I can name specific institutions who were racist to the
black minority. But in order for anyone to fight modern day institutional racism, you have to tell me
what company is being racist, tell me why, and we can fight that together. Unfortunately for those
who believe there is still institutional racism in America, they can't name a business and why.
Running around and yelling "there's racism in America" doesn't ... Show more content on

Young black men who are shot by the police are very commonly justified, such as Michael Brown
who was shot by police because he went for a cops gun inside a cops car. Slyville Smith was killed
because he had a record of various arrests, and refused to put his illegally obtained pistol down
when an officer asked him to. Where are the overzealous white cops who are out to take young
black men into prisons for no reason? Where are the cops who kill solely because they're racist?
Some may argue that cops who are pulling people over for "small" crimes like a broken tail light or
slightly speeding is what causes more police brutality, but if a cop pulls a person over for a broken
tail light, and they get out of the car with a weapon, is the cop really racist in that scenario? Or is the
cop simply protecting himself and others around them? Racism in the police force is virtually
nonexistent. I can agree that certain individuals will be racist, but one cop being racist in an entire
department of cops does not mean there is an institutionalized issue, and can be cared for much
easier; fire the

The New Deal : The New Deal
It all started back in 1929, the depression era. The stock market had recently crashed and people
were desperate for hope. Unemployment was at its all time high, more than one fourth of the U.S
population was unemployed and gradually increasing. At the time of when the depression first
began, President Herbert Hoover was in power. During the depression people would wait in long
lines just for a few bites to eat. Volunteers would hand out food to the hopeless and hungry people,
these were commonly known as Soup kitchens in "Hoovervilles" . The soup kitchens and the help
efforts that were in place during the depression were named after the president of the time. The
struggles did not get any better until the start of the CCC, The Civilian Conservation Corp. The CCC
or otherwise known as the Civilian Conservation Corp was a group, in the beginning there were
about 250,000 young men that joined but towards the end of the program there was a total of 3
million enrollees! The young men were paid and well feed to work for their people and the
environment which we now live in. The CCC began in the year 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt was the
President of that time. He had witnessed the struggle his people were going through at the time of
the depression and he had enough. After taking office in the year 1933 he acted fast and created the
"New Deal". This New Deal was an effort to help the citizens of the United States come out of
unemployment and to give back the people their lost

The Category And Summary Of The Lord Of The Flies
Summary of the movie: A gathering of young men end up stranded on an island and begin getting to
be plainly savage. Reasonable Ralph turns into the assigned pioneer of a group of military children
who crash in the sea and wind up on a rich island. Initially, the gathering began as companions,
cooperating to survive, however soon they split into two camps, the other drove by Jack, who winds
up noticeably lopsided and somewhat vicious. Jack has a no–rules, savage operation, with his young
men running chasing for pigs and plotting assaults on the adversary camp. The head of a pig is put
on a stake, and turns into "The Lord of the Flies." There is tumult battling about essential items, for
example, the conch shell, to some degree an image of who's in control, and a pair of glasses, used to
start a fire. Jack and his rowdy young peers attempt to take these. In the meantime, the tranquil and
intelligent kid Simon, of Jack's gathering, sets out and finds a cave where a "creature" lives, the
beast being the plane's captain who survived and hung out there. Simon returns from the experience
shaken and filthy, at camp the young men assault him with lances, slaughtering him. Afterward,
Piggy, from Ralph's camp is murdered when a gigantic rock is pushed and falls on him. Ralph fears
for his life, knowing very well indeed that Jack is currently after him. Flames are begun to bait him
out of the wilderness. A group of American militaries arrives, and encountered upon the young men,

The Darkness Of Light By Ambrose Bierce
Ambrose Bierce was known as the "mist of light". His stories were usually centered on civil war. It
was usually a horror or supernatural story, but it could be a comic or tall–tale as well. Bierce's
"Chickamauga" is nothing short of a horror story. This story is known as one of the most powerful
anti–war stories, and fits in with the literary criticism New Historicism. It is about a young boy
around the age of 6 years, whose father had fought in the Civil War. We later find out that the young
boy is deaf and mute. This, and him being only 6 years of age, causes him to be naïve about the
things he sees in the forest one day when he gets lost.
The story starts off with the young boy wandering off from the house he lives at, hoping to find an
adventure. He even brought his wooden sword along to fight the "battles" he was to face. He soon
realizes he is lost and gets startled by a rabbit, and he begins crying himself to sleep. When he sees
the rabbit, he is "confronted with a new and more formidable enemy." This is an example of imagery
in the story which is carried throughout the story (Bierce). When he finally awakes, he begins to see
men crawling on their hands and feet toward him. This is one time his naïve ways get in the way.
The narrator of the story says, "Something in this – something too, perhaps, in their grotesque
attitudes and movements– reminded him of the painted clown whom he had seen last summer in the
circus, and he laughed as he watched them." He didn't

Scar Lord Of The Flies Quote Analysis
Throughout the ages, symbolism has been used to entice and interest the reader through meaning.
Without meaning, literature, like Lord of the Flies by William Golding, would not be the same as it
is today. It is apparent that the novel is full of meaning and contains in depth knowledge about
mankind. This is displayed through symbols and characters that appear to be more complex than
they seem. These symbols, ones such as the scar, the fire, and the conch, are all used to help convey
Golding's idea about the inner evil and desires in mankind.
In Lord of the Flies, symbolism is everywhere, from a pair of glasses to a mountain. The book itself
is an allegory for savagery and evil within mankind, but a symbol that truly supports Golding's idea
is the scar. Simply speaking, the scar is a term for the crash site where the boys landed, but it is more
than what it appears to be. The scar symbolizes destruction of paradise once mankind is brought into
the picture, meaning man destroys paradise merely by entering it. The scar truly ties up with the
message in Lord of the Flies, inner evil and it's destruction. ... Show more content on

The fire is a symbol of human civilization, hope, and rescue, but it can also become uncontrollable
like it did in chapter three of the novel. In chapter three, Ralph, the leader of the boys, tells them to
make a fire on the mountain in order to have a greater chance of rescue. His plan, however, was not
well thought out and lead to an unruly wildfire that killed an innocent young boy. Once out of
control, fire can become a technology of

Lord Of The Flies Chapter 1 Analysis
The crying gradually died down. The tears step by step floated into abandoned wheezes, hiccups,
and sneezes. Before long just a couple of littluns remained sneezing, rubbing their running noses
with the back of their grimy hands. Hush at that point set over the island, the thundering of the irate
fire apparently quieted out of sight as the young men held up, breathing shoddily. There was a
respite lastly the man – the adult – swung back to confront the nasty nosed, puffy peered toward
youngsters. They looked at him with wide, red, tearstained eyes. The maritime officer – an adult,
Ralph couldn't trust it – moved awkwardly under the young men's gapes, at last swinging to the
self–acclaimed pioneer and yelped. "You – You said you were in ... Show more content on

The Naval officer picked three littluns who looked both totally frightened and assuaged. The
individuals who remained looked as the watercraft left the shore, delicately bouncing with the
waves. Nobody addressed each other; nobody took a gander at each other. They remained with their
backs to the consuming backwoods. The officer came back with another watercraft and officer, and
six children floated off towards the security and assurance of the outside world. It proceeded with
like that until the point when just three remained. The twins sat off to the side, not setting out to
gaze toward Ralph as they sat tight for the last watercraft to return. The sun was setting, and the fire
still crackled fiercely out of sight. Ralph sat with his head on his knees, confronting the water and
looking as the impression of the fire moved over the surface. His eyes checked the shoreline and he
saw the place he had first blown the conch and called the gathering. That helped him to remember
Piggy and he immediately dismissed, looking down at the sand. It got his attention as effectively as
it had some time recently, this time helped with the impression of the fire out of sight. He bounced
for it, startling Samneric behind him, and started burrowing at the sand. A little while later, the pale
shell started to show up. He pulled at it, pulling it free from the sand, and gazing at it in wonder.
Indirectly he could recall Piggy's words. '– a conch; costly.' Ralph gazed at the

The Vietnam War Protests
The Vietnam War protests happened in the 1960s in America and was a part of the Cold War. People
and specifically, youths, such as college students, protested mostly about the draft and the inhumane
conditions and implications of the war. There were many violent street protests that escalated into
violent riots and fires. The Tunisian or "Jasmine" Revolution took place from 2010–2011 in Tunisia.
The youth, such as young adults, protested mostly about government corruption such as repression
of civil liberties and rights. Both these protests were spurred and carried on mainly by passionate
youth activists. While the characteristics for youth activism in both America and Tunisia are similar
in that they both included violent protests and arson, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Youth chose to protest because their peers, friends, and family members were being drafted as a part
of the Selective Service Act, which forced American men to register with a local draft board once
they became 18 years old (Brannan, "the United States v. O'Brien"). The draft made many youths
upset because they felt that it was unfair that the people they cared about were forced to fight in a
war that they did not believe in or want to fight in, as many felt that the United States soldiers were
too harsh towards the Vietnamese who posed no direct threat to the United States. It was felt that the
young men were fighting the war waged by old men. In addition, many felt empathetic towards the
young men who fought, as youth felt upset that some people who were the same age of them died,
and that those men could have been them. This is why many youths turned towards activism in order
to protest against the Vietnam War. Protests against the Vietnam War were a very common form of
expression on college campuses. One of the most famous protests on college campuses happened on
the Kent State University Campus in Kent, Ohio. The drafting of students, specifically for the
invasion of Cambodia, caused students to hold a rally on May 1st, 1970 and burn down the Reserve
Officer Training Corps (ROTC) building. There was another rally 4 days later, which included 2,000
students. The National Guard showed up and opened fire killing 4 students and wounding 9 others.
This event became known as the Kent State Massacre (Batchelor, "Kent State Massacre"). The
students burned down the ROTC building because some people would go there and enlist because
they knew they were going to get drafted, so enlisting would at least give them the choice to be
higher in rank and gain more privilege. Therefore, the ROTC building symbolized U.S. soldiers
going to fight

Maturity In Stephen Crane's The Red Badge Of Courage
As men battle against men on the field, their breath heavy, their bodies torn, their love for their
country strong, they face the many grim and grotesque features of war. Watching their fellow
companions, some friends, others family, expire before their eyes, realizing that they, too, could
meet the same fate, wishing to return home to their wives and kids where they would be safe, men
change in war. Young soldiers, naively entering battle yearning for exhilarating action and hoping to
become the next epic hero, soon realize that war is vastly different from their fantasies. Battle
hardens soldiers. Boys mature into men. Men grow wiser. No man that enters warfare is left
unscathed. Maturity is an essential result of war. Stephen Crane, the author ... Show more content on

In The Red Badge of Courage, Stephen Crane depicts maturity through the soldiers' experiences and
hardships in battle. As he matures in battle, Henry Fleming progresses from a scared, young soldier
to one of the best fighters of his regiment. Similar to other young men hoping to join the Union
army, Henry enlists into battle with visions "of vague and bloody conflicts that [thrill] him in their
sweep and fire." However, Henry fears that he may not have what it takes to emulate the Homeric
heroes of the past, believing that he may lack the fortitude to endure battle and, therefore, flee from
the conflict. His fears become reality at the second Confederate charge when the persistence of the
rebels and the fleeing men of his regiment convince Henry to abscond from the scene. The events of
the second charge complicate Henry's assumption of the nature of war, as he fled from the skirmish
instead of fighting like a brave warrior. This moment of the novel is an essential element of Henry's
maturation. At this point, Henry realizes that war involves more than what Homer's epics and his
childhood fantasies convey. He comes to the conclusion that he lost his honor that day for he lacks a

Lord Of The Flies Critical Analysis
Lord of the Flies, a nonfiction novel, was written by William Golding in 1954. Golding tells the tale
of British school boys who are stranded on an island after the plane that attempted to save them
from the war, was shot down. The young men, who are left alone with no parents, attempt to form a
tribe for their survival. Members of the tribe are given different occupations such as hunters,
builders of fire, builders of shelters, and gathers. The tribe begins to falter when the boys form
different opinions of what is the most significant key to survival. Golding illustrates the darker side
of civilization through his own unique style. Golding was in the Royal Navy during World War II.
Golding saw many deplorable and appalling things while serving in the war. The dark elements of
the novel reflect his experiences. "The Spear moved forward inch by inch and the terrified squealing
became a high pitched scream. Then Jack found the throat and the hot blood sprouted over his
hands."(Goulding, William. "Chapter 8." Lord of the Flies. New York, NY: Penguin Group, 2011.
189. Print. ) In this scene from the book, Jack and his tribe killed the pig. Golding's war experience
allowed him to provide vivid literary examples to the reader. Golding also incorporated the "slang"
or local flare, to the young boys' conversations. This clever writing style helped showed the origin
and life in society before the boys were stranded on the island. Characterization was also used by
Goulding. Golding used characters to represent aspects of mankind. Piggy represented reason and
thought. Jack however, represented barbaric force and anger which is often suppressed in normal
society. Golding illustrates a marvelous tale with vivid description, clever word choice, and use of
dialogue between the characters. While reading, several quotes spoke to me personally and were
highpoints of the novel. One such quote came from the scene where Simon has a close encounter
with the "beast". "There isn't anyone to help you. Only me. And I'm the Beast. . . . Fancy thinking
the Beast was something you could hunt and kill! . . . You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you? Close,
close, close! I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are the way they are?"

The Night of Fire
The Night (Fire engine, boys, rain)
April 24th, 2012; the sound of the news on the television hums in the background drowned out by
people talking and laughing. Fire Station 141 is buzzing with life; everything is in calm and
peaceful; when suddenly a loud screaming sound rings through the brick walls. All of the men in the
station startle to attention and rush around in organized chaos. The shuffling of boots on the smooth
concrete floors and ruffling of thick fire suits is drowned out by the resounding alarm. The men pile
into the large red trucks and screech out of the station. The alarm becomes silent and the station is
abandoned and the only sound it the news humming in the background. The men hardly fit in the
small quarters of the truck. The smell of burnt rubber and gasoline fill the cramped space. The sirens
atop the thick metal roof of the truck bounce back and forth on houses and cars nearby. Dark clouds
start to form above the speeding truck and soon the rain is playing a soft beat on the roof. The cold
weather creates a pale fog against the window. Everything starts to slow down and become faded,
the dark night outside the window now is everywhere and a group of boys are playing baseball. The
ball is a dirty cream color and is throwing off water as it spins through the air, then smack it hits a
leather glove with an explosion of water up into a young boy's smiling face. There is a newspaper on
the ground that is soaked but the date says April 24th, 1986.

Female Inequality : A Patriarchal Society
Our society has always been believed to be patriarchal society, with female inequality in
representative roles, the absence of a female president and the misogynistic opinion of some men to
prove it. In fact, Socrates stated that "Once made equal to a man, woman becomes his superior"
which is exactly what Mycenaean men feared most. Ancient Greece was a very patriarchal society,
and we owe much of that to the Mycenaean men who structured their myths to the benefit of men.
However, it wasn't always this way. In Crete there was a society of women called the Minoans who
ruled as a matriarchal society that was not nomadic and centered their life on fertility and Gaea, the
mother earth. The Minoan society believed that men weren't connected to the earth because they
weren't able to produce babies; nevertheless, they believed that men had some fertility so they
would sacrifice men to female goddesses to ensure fertility. When the Mycenaean men saw this they
knew that they had to avoid the Minoan rule anyway possible. Therefore, the Mycenaean came and
pillaged through Crete overthrowing the Minoan society to guarantee that the Minoan way of life
would not resurface. Mycenaean men took advantage of what they had seen the Minoan culture do
and intricately structured myths displaying rules that the proper Greek should follow in hope that
people would follow and not revert to the Minoan ways. Edith Hamilton's Mythology introduces
those myths with clarity, in–depth analysis of each myth

Who Was Responsible For The Triangle Fire
The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire happened on March 25, 1911. The Triangle Fire is remembered as one
of the most tragic workplace incidents in the history of Industrial America. This tragic fire killed 146
female factory workers, some as young as age 15. During this time there was many problems with
sweatshops and unsafe working conditions, this fire proved those problems to be true. The Triangle
Shirtwaist Company was owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris. The company was started by
Blanck and Harris in 1900. Their company occupied the top three floors (8,9,10) of the Asch

The building had four elevators to reach the factory floors, however, in 1911 only one of those four
elevators were functional, workers also had to file down a long narrow hallway to reach it. In
addition to those elevators there were two stairways down. One of those stairways was unlocked.
The other stairway down was locked from the outside. The building also had a fire escape, but it was
very narrow and couldn't get that many people down it fast enough. With what happened on the
Triangle Fire of 1911, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris should be blamed for the tragic aftermath and so
many women dead with the fire. Their punishment for 146 females dying was very inadequate.
Seeming how they did not take the proper safety precautions and their factory was not up to city
codes. Blanck and Harris did not get charged of manslaughter or anything for the 146 females dying
in this fire, though they definitely should have. There had been strikes in years before about better
working conditions and more safe precautions in the factory. One reporter that was an eyewitness to
the fire said, "I remembered their great strike of last year, in which these girls demanded more
sanitary workrooms, and more safety precautions in the shops. These dead bodies told the results." 1
The workers wanted safer conditions the year before, so much so that they went on strike. Nothing
changed through this strike and the worst thing happened, the unsafe conditions killed 146

Comparison Between Norman Maclean's 'Young Men And Fire'
We all live and we all die. Most of us hope to live and leave a legacy, something to be remembered
by. It is inevitable that we will die, but dying young is a tale that Norman Maclean serves us in
Young Men and Fire. Maclean devours the anguish of dying young to the passion of the Christ.
Maclean's background allows him to tell this tale with a divine humility, enabling him to seize this
matter with solemnity and respect. While a Christians' honor Christ's sacrifice for us, Normal
Maclean shines respect and honor on the tragic death of the brave men who lost their lives in the
raging mountain wildfire. Normal Maclean searches for the truth when thirteen smokejumpers' lost
their lives in the Mann Gulch fire in 1949, giving the reader some hope that God had a plan for their
journey. It was in the year 1949 on August 10 when Norman Maclean observed the Mann Gulch fire
and became attached to it. It was a tragedy that took the lives of 13 U.S. Forest Service's
Smokejumpers, consuming the author's attention until he was too ill to write any longer. ... Show

This scene depicts the landscape laden with crosses. It gives the reader a real sense of what was seen
that day; a very tragic, surreal, unimaginably painful tragedy. Using religion again, the reader
gathers the allusion of Dante's Inferno writing, "Since the Inferno is also a pit, I have had to learn
how to die in the Inferno always falling down" (p205). The smokejumpers' died, falling, which
strips the reader of confidence and hope that they had a chance to fight. By falling, they had nothing
to save them but a flight, a flight that had already left. There is no explaining why only three of
sixteen smokejumpers' survived but religion can be suggested. Was it God? Why were they saved?

Yeats Sailing To Byzantium Analysis
Not a Country for the Old
(A discussion on three messages from Yeats Sailing to Byzantium.)
William Butler Yeats was a poet of the twentieth century, a time of change with world wars,
revolutions, technology change, and much more. William Yeats is considered the most important
poet of the twentieth century. "The Irish poet and dramatist William Butler Yeats (1865–1939) was
perhaps the greatest poet of the 20th century. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1923 and was
the leader of the Irish Literary Renaissance"(Gale). Yeats started his career with plays, and
eventually moved to poetry. Poetry gave him a loud voice to express what he wanted. One of his
most remembered pieces of work is Sailing to Byzantium. In Yeats's Sailing to Byzantium three
messages are displayed.
In Sailing to Byzantium, William Yeats expresses the message of young people only being interested
in the present. When people are young they are inexperienced and dumb. Yeats acknowledges this
idea in his poem and explains the idea that being young is fun, young people like to be together, or
in love. He realizes young people are only interested in the present and nothing else. "Caught in that
sensual music all neglect, monuments of unaging intellect"(1). Yeats explains that the old will try
and give wisdom to the young, but it's useless because the young doesn't wish to listen. The young
are too busy living life to the fullest, to sit down and listen to the words of a wise old man. Yeats

How To Recruit Boy Scouts
Young men, from ages 11 to 18, in the Boy Scouts of America have the option to experience a trip
called Klondike. On this trip, various teams from each troop compete with their fellow scouts with
their mental abilities in a competitions of speed and skill. Every team must run with dog sleds pulled
by scouts, going to as many stations as possible to earn points on what they can do to survive in
certain scenarios with the skills and supplies they have in their sleds. The team with the most points
and as the quickest time wins the competition. These experiences prepare these young men for
future occupations and possible survival situations. Without these experiences and knowledge one
learns, many would be lost in these situations. Every young man should be required to join Boy

Man and Nature in Norman Maclean's book, Young Men and Fire
Norman Maclean's book, Young Men and Fire, recreates the tragedy of the Mann Gulch fire. His
ambition to have this lamentable episode of history reach out and touch his readers triumphs in
extolling the honor and respect deserved by the thirteen smoke jumpers who died. This book is a
splendid tribute to the courageous efforts of such men, as well as a landmark, reminding mankind to
heed the unpredictable behavior and raw power of nature.

The research Maclean put into retelling this catastrophe is remarkable and further enthralls the
reader as he unfolds the story through the perspective of people involved in the tragedy. Maclean's
intricate weaving of characters and their individual stories as well as the aftermath, the reports, the
trials, and the adversity all provide an aura of the "real" truth. The empathic reader also develops his
own saga as he views the tale through the eyes of the foreman Dodge, and the other two survivors,
Sallee and Rumsey.
Maclean, reconstructed the tragedy, much like coaches review the films of athletic competitions that
challenged their squads to the nth degree. Over and over, Maclean reviews each minute detail,
scouring them for something that might reveal a hint of an explanation or some resolution to help
reduce the terrible grief of such an untimely occurrence.
Although the young men died like squirrels in Mann Gulch, the Mann Gulch fire should not end
there, smoke drifting away and leaving terror without consolation of explanation, and controversy
without lasting settlement. Probably most catastrophes end this way without an ending, the dead not
even knowing how they died but "still alertly erect in fear and wonder," those who loved them
forever questioning "this unnecessary death," and the rest of us tiring of this inconsolable
catastrophe and turning to the next one.
One can't help but to ponder the seemingly inevitable

conflict family and friends were torn apart in allegiance between the two. This bloody war lasted for
four years and gave way to horrific battles. During this time a man named Ambrose Bierce joined
the 9th Indiana volunteers and was seriously wounded at the battle of Kennesaw mountain. Few
years after the end of the civil war Bierce would write a book called Civil War Stories. In this book
Bierce would take an opposite approach to his and others in this war. Most books in that time would
glorify generals and great battles won. But Bierce would focus on the real battles and relate with the
common soldier and the horrendous conditions and the repercussions ... Show more content on

With the above statement about how the young officer had no respect until the older soldier gave
him his acceptance. Their willingness to follow was because past actions as stated "The old soldier
nods familiarly; he evidently knows him" (Bierce 48). This statement means that this young officer
has gained the respect of the senior soldiers in past battles. Bierce goes on to write a very important
statement next "The young officer salutes, then wheels his horse, and rides straight toward the crest
of the hill" (Bierce 48). This statement is the embodiment of the idea of leading from the front. The
young officer could have sent the line of skirmishers he commanded, and easily stayed behind to
watch the whole line get massacred. Instead the young officer took it upon himself too recon the
enemy's position knowing full hearted that could mean his life. As the young officer rode out on his
own Bierce makes comments like "If he would but turn– if he could but see the love, the adoration,
the atonement" (Bierce 49). Statements such as this mean that the soldiers have given this young
officer their full commitment and knew that he saved them from unnecessarily dying. This idea of

The Five People You Meet In Heaven Analysis
Jackie Robinson once said, "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." With 7
billion other people on the planet it is easy to think one is worthless. Most individuals feel as if they
are insignificant in the world. They fail to realize the importance of their influence on others. For
example, in The Five People You Meet In Heaven, author Mitch Albom, illustrates a bitter elderly
man, Eddie. He feels as if he is pointless and regrets his repetitious job as maintenance worker.
However, this is all changed in Eddie's journey through heaven. In the novel The Five People You
Meet in Heaven, by Albom, Eddie comes to realize how his time in the military transformed others'
lives.
While in heaven, Eddie first learns how his time in the military impacted the lives of his unit and his
captain. He had immensely affected whether they had lived or died during their time as prisoners of
war. Due to his quick thinking, Eddie was able to construct a diversion that gave him and his men an
escape route. Eddie used his juggling skills to distract the guards resulting in their flee. Without
Eddie's assistance the men would most likely not have escaped. Unfortunately, their jailbreak also
led up to the captain's death. When the men were rushing out of the burning camp, Eddie believed
he saw a person in the fire. He made several attempts to save whoever was still in the flames. This
gave the captain no choice but to shoot his leg and then rush him to a nearby medical

Mysticism In Night By Eli Wiesel
The novel "Night" written by Elis Wiesel talks about his religious life at home in the little town of
Sighet in Transylvania and how his religion began fading day to day while being held in the
concentration camps during World War II. At the age of thirteen Elis started showing interest in
Kabbalah, a Jewish religion. When he asked his father to help find him a master and guide him
through the study of Kabbalah, his father simply said no. He felt that Elis was too young and needed
to be older before venturing into the world of mysticism. One day Elis was spotted by his friend
Moshie the Beadle praying and he asked Elis "Why do you cry when you pray"(p.4)? Elis' answer to

Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Essay
After reading the novel Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix and watching the Triangle Shirtwaist
Factory Fire 1911 documentary it became apparent that there were several similarities between the
two, however, there are also many differences. Haddix wrote Uprising from the perspective of three
young girls over the period of a few years leading up to the fire; while the documentary simply
covered the indecent of the fire and used first hand accounts of civilians that were around the
building during the event. Although Uprising and the documentary on the fire may tell it a little
differently, both tell the history of one of the worst disasters in New York's history. The novel
Uprising and documentary on the Triangle fire were both intended to inform on a major piece of
history. Both included several of the same pieces of information such as the New York University
students who helped the people in the building who escaped from the tenth floor onto the roof of the
Triangle factory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Mycomb Moby House Fire
MAYCOMB COUNTY– A house fire in the winter this year, 1935, was caused by a lamp being left

spewing out of the house on the main residential street, many neighbors were watching the event
unfold, and they also helped Maudie get some of her recoverable furniture out of the house. Fire
trucks immediately arrived on the scene. This was not much help because the town fire truck could

Cause And Effect Of The Triangle Fire
Cause and Effect
During the 18th century, England and the Americas were mostly agricultural based societies. The
majority of people lived in rural communities, worked at home, and used basic tools or handmade
machinery in order to make a living for their family. Soon, the innovation in the textile and iron
industries created a shift towards the Industrial Revolution, and many people began to migrate to
more urban areas in order to work in factories. Although the revolution was faced with many
problems, such as grim employment and living conditions for the poor and working classes,
industrial growth helped the economy as there was a boom in manufactured goods at lowered costs.
The United States, during this time, was rapidly expanding, and industry was growing by leaps and
bounds. In New York City, the garment industry flourished which led to the immigration boom as
people, mainly from Europe, immigrated to America for a better life and for better economic
opportunities. The Triangle Fire, by Jo Ann E. Argersinger is set during the time of the Progressive
era in America and details a turning point in American history. Culturally, many immigrants began
to embrace American lifestyle; although, they still had strong ties to their own traditions which
caused the concept of "the melting pot." Historically, many key events contributed to, and
influenced future cultural and societal changes. Philosophically, in the United States, the terrible

Symbolism In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies
In literature, symbolism is one of the most important aspects in telling a story; without this, a story
would simply appear to be inconsequential and have no reason. Throughout William Golding's Lord
of the Flies, it is portrayed that with a lack of unity, rules and order comes the dismantlement of
civilization. Over the course the novel, Golding uses a number of symbols to represent these themes,
most importantly though, piggy's glasses. He uses this object in particular to symbolize Piggy's feel
for reason and universal ethical laws by which all human beings should follow; while on the other
hand, for Jack and the other "savages", it is are a tool to control the children and that is why Jack
feels the need to break them. Firstly, the glasses are worn by Piggy to see, however the young men
soon find another utilization for them. These glasses are a representation of Piggy's intellect and
need for order. At whatever point Piggy wears these glasses he is scholarly, while without them, he
can't see which renders him useless. When the other boys take them from Piggy he cries, "'My
specs!' howled Piggy. 'Give me my specs!'" (Golding 41). The glasses likewise mean power since
they are used to begin a fire. Indeed, even Jack finds the glasses so valuable he steals them in order
to start a fire and cook the pig he caught. Taking everything into account, Piggy's glasses are critical
on the grounds that it implies who is in control and it makes a flag fire which is the best way to

Elie Wiesel Reflection
Elie Wiesel details his experiences being deported to different concentrations camps in the book
Night. He lived in Sighet, Transylvania and at the age of 15 he and his family were sent first to two
different ghettos and then to the camps. His story is breathtaking and can really teach someone
important lessons. In Wiesel's memoir one idea that is presented is that when one questions his faith
in God, he begins to lose hope in life. Scary experiences can change a person in lots of ways. SS
officers ordered everyone from the ghetto including Elie, his mom dad three sisters into cattle cars
80 per car. Mrs. Schachter in the dead of night screamed at the top of her lungs "Look at the fire!
Look at the flames! Flames Everywhere..." (26). People looked in every direction and saw nothing.
After Mrs.Schachter screamed about fire a couple times, young men bound and gagged her. They
started to strike her and people shouted their approval. Elie still had faith in God but that was before
he got off the train and witnessed the fires Mrs.Schachter was talking about. In Auschwitz Elie
witnessed kids being thrown into the fires and families being burned alive. "Never shall I forget
those moments that murdered my God and my soul that turned my dreams to ashes"(34). When Elie
thought he was going to walk into the fire himself this was the first real time he questioned his faith
in god and humanity. This moment he began to question and lose hope, which is a bad thing if you

Pipel was innocent, young, and Jewish. No one had anything against him, but he was killed anyway.
"But the Dutchman's little servant boy was loved by all." (Wiesel 63). Everyone liked the innocent

nothing to prevent it. The pipel was so young when he was hanged, he was a good Jewish child. "In

that he could have made it out of the camp alive, because he was so young. I guess God decided he

Dulce Et Decorum Est Essay
The poem "Dulce et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen depicts the horrors of World War I with the
horrendous imagery and the use of words he utilizes. Owen uses graphic descriptions of life in the
war to convey a powerful message. The speaker is a soldier in the army, warning young people
eager for war that it is not what it seems. He explains his experience of a gas attack where he lost a
fellow comrade and the lasting impact it had on him. He describes how terrible the conditions were
for the soldiers by combining gruesome imagery and powerful metaphors.
The poem opens with the first lines of the poem exhibiting the poor condition of the men, " bent
double, over like old beggars under sacks" (Line 1). That shows how filthy the soldiers appeared ...

This shows the soldier's pain and suffering. "Floud'ring" gives the allusion that the soldier is
struggling and is very clumsy. The use of "fire and lime" (12) gives an vivid image of the agony he
is experiencing. The irony of the poem is seen in the last lines as he attacks those who argue that
death in the war is honored, "my friend, you would not tell with such high zest" (Line 25). The use
of "my friend" (25) is ironic and betrays his anger as he holds these people responsible for what he
and so many others has had to encounter and says that if only they were there to observe the horror
of the war then they would realize the extent of the "old Lie"(Line 27). Owen alludes to the title in
the final line of the poem "Dulce et Decorum est pro Patria Mori" (Line 28). "Dulce et Decorum est"
means it is sweet and right to die for your country. In other words, it is wonderful and a great honor
to fight and die for your country. He is trying to say that it isn't true and that's the "old Lie" war isn't
as glorious as its made out to be. What makes the poet so upset is not so much "the old Lie" itself,
but the influence it has on young men whose lives are cut short or forever painful by rushing into

Participant Observation Methods
I found that the participant observation method was the most helpful and easiest method to use. I
was able to talk with the firemen about their experiences and see how they interacted. I also worked
out with them and sat around talking with them. This method allowed me to get information about
their interactions because I could easily observe them talking amongst themselves and to me. One of
the downsides of this method was that I could not record information as I was observing. Writing
down what they were saying and what was going on would seem rude and would be hard to do. I
had to wait until leaving the firehouse before recording what happened. This led to more vague
information because of forgetting things. The phenomenological method

Book Review of 'Triangle: The Fire That Changed America'
Triangle: The Fire That Changed America New York: First Grove Press David Von Drehle 2003
Book Review 1. Did the author make a complete and honest analysis of the topic? This book is
about the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City in March, 1911. The factory
claimed the lives of 146 women and men, mostly young women, during the 30 minutes that the fire
blazed. It is still the largest industrial disaster that has ever happened in New York City. The author
of the book writes more as a novelist than as a historian because he seems to want to draw his
audience into the different scenes of the book. He begins by describing a section of sidewalk
popularly termed "Misery Lane" (Drehle, 3). He follows the actions of one young man and his aunt
who are looking at coffins trying to determine if any of the young women represented there are
among the three relatives that he lost. He is walking with his aunt Rosa who suggests that a young
woman is one of the girls, but they later determine that it is not. The story continues like this, giving
personal accounts as nearly as the author could, which makes it seem more like a story than an
actual historical event. The author starts with Misery Lane, where the bodies were taken, but he
quickly moves through the years preceding the fire, and then he talks about the aftermath of the
blaze. The author describes the building in which the fire took place and the workers who waited
outside on the fateful day to gain

Essay On Triangle Fire
The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire was an infamous part of our history as a nation. The fire began on the
eighth floor of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory and quickly spread all throughout the building. The
fire took almost one hundred and fifty lives, most of them being young women or girls. It was not
just the fire that took so many lives though, but women and men alike jumping from many stories
up, to their death, just to have a possibility to live. However, many women and men alike were
brought to safety by some of the students at the adjacent law school to the factory. Elias Kanter and
Charles T. Kremer, as well as other several students, were able to put some ladders down to the same
level as the roof of the factory and help bring many people to safety. Kremer was even willing to go
back down into the factory while it was on fire and managed to save one poor girl whose hair was
on fire. Their bravery assuredly made a difference in the lives of numerous of the factory workers.
The smoke from the now roaring fire could be seen seeping out the windows where girls stood at the

Comparing The Open Boat And To Build A Fire
The illusion of free will is dominant as a theme in both the "The Open Boat" by Stephen Crane and
"To Build a Fire" by Jack London, as the characters struggle to stay alive in the face of the
unforgiving environment. For instance, in "The Open Boat" the characters try to fight against the
ocean and the environment around them, but they soon realize it is the environment controlling them
and their fighting is of no use. In the story "To Build a Fire", the main character has allowed his
mind to deceive himself as he perceives himself safe in the arctic, but that all changes when the fire
goes out and the cold environment absorbs him. However, the difference between the two stories is
that the environment in "To Build a Fire" suppresses the man, ... Show more content on

However, the illusion is far greater in the story "To Build a Fire" as the character is figuratively
absorbed by the environment, while only one of the men die in "The Open Boat". Furthermore, the
control of the environment on the characters is immense in the story "To Build a Fire", "He was
losing in his battle with the frost. It was creeping into his body from all sides." (1057) The
environment literally takes control of the man's fate, while the men in "The Open Boat" are pushed
around a little less dramatically, "The wind bore coldness with it, and the men began to shiver. Holy
smoke! Said one, allowing his voice to express his impious mood" (998). In addition, the tone or
mood of both stories differs even they both are controlled by the environment. The tone of "To Build
a Fire" is frightening as the cold arctic air takes hold of the man, "A certain fear of death, dull and
oppressive came to him......it was a matter of life and death with chances against him" (1056).
Moreover, the story "The Open Boat" is slightly less dramatic as all but one man makes it shore
safely. Finally, the environment proves that free will is an illusion in both short

"what did they die for?" He compares them to the firefighters who died in the aftermath of the terror

while the Hotshots died protecting property. He goes on to tell of how in the moment most people

that lead to their deaths, which is where it was going initially; Egan, on the other hand, took it as an

Gallipoli Movie Propaganda

campaign against Turkish positions on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. The film starts out in
Western Australia, 1915. Archie is young man who is introduced in the first scene, is a talented

to war to help fight for their country and gain honor from their families. Archie saw it as an
opportunity to go travel the world as his uncle had. There were many reasons for the young men to
sign up, for some it was the fear of humiliation, others the excitement of a new job with better pay,
even just being able to wear the uniform to impress women. Throughout the film the patriotic
feeling depicted in the film was very encouraging, telling everyone to sign up to support their

Battle Of Thermopylae Battle Analysis
The Battle of Thermopylae, perhaps one of the most well–known ancient battles in history, has been
written about many times since event first occurred thousands of years ago. Gates of Fire by Steven
Pressfield, however, puts a unique spin on it. Pressfield covers not only the battle, but the Spartans
that made up the battle. He gives an in–depth view of what he thinks Spartans really were like. The
character and values that Spartans hold dear is described in great detail. The Spartans are described
in the usual way. They are fearless, religious, and hold their virtues to a very high standard.
Pressfield shows their fearlessness in several ways. First, the Spartans are going to a battle, and a

"Gates of Fire" explains that the messes and battle drills are used to teach the kids very important
aspects of being the best Spartan. Pressfield also stressed the brevity that the Spartan warriors
possess. The Spartans did not give any long speeches, and several Spartans would only consider
talking if they believed it would help their younger Spartan in training. Several times a character
would stop talking if he believed he had rambled too far away from the message. The Spartan
culture is a part of the Spartan legend as much as the Spartiates themselves. Many beliefs and habits
can be used to describe the culture of Sparta. Pressfield describes the "agoge", the training for the
young Spartan children, and how brutal and harsh it can be. This training however, is an essential
part of Sparta. Without this, the Spartiates wouldn't possess all these virtues. The brotherhood that
the Spartiates share with one another is also described. By battling, the men form a close bond with
one another that allows Spartans to engage each other so casually.*** The messes of the men are
another element that adds to the Spartan culture. The messes are the source of much bonding and
mental training for the younger

Mt Nebo, one of Arkansas first state parks had CCC company 1780–V which was a group of
veterans from southern states worked to build Mt Nebo's historical cabins, hiking trails, fire pits,

Arkansas state parks and national park systems. There are thousands of pages written in dedication

was less of a bowl, he supposed, and more of big cup, but the grumbling of his stomach quieted
further thoughts. He drank it down in a big gulp, the taste of leek and peas hitting his taste buds, and
the all too brief flavor of pork eluding him. He grabbed another, slurping it down loudly, as the
crone gave him a weird stare. By the Gods, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Racism in America: Pros, Cons of Institutional Racism

  • 1. Pros And Cons Of Racism In America Do you think America is institutionally racist? Who is at a disadvantage? Institutional racism means that there is a systematic way for certain groups of people to be put on a lower level or have a disadvantage than another group of people. There was definitely institutional racism in America about fifty years ago, and I know that because I can name specific institutions who were racist to the black minority. But in order for anyone to fight modern day institutional racism, you have to tell me what company is being racist, tell me why, and we can fight that together. Unfortunately for those who believe there is still institutional racism in America, they can't name a business and why. Running around and yelling "there's racism in America" doesn't ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Young black men who are shot by the police are very commonly justified, such as Michael Brown who was shot by police because he went for a cops gun inside a cops car. Slyville Smith was killed because he had a record of various arrests, and refused to put his illegally obtained pistol down when an officer asked him to. Where are the overzealous white cops who are out to take young black men into prisons for no reason? Where are the cops who kill solely because they're racist? Some may argue that cops who are pulling people over for "small" crimes like a broken tail light or slightly speeding is what causes more police brutality, but if a cop pulls a person over for a broken tail light, and they get out of the car with a weapon, is the cop really racist in that scenario? Or is the cop simply protecting himself and others around them? Racism in the police force is virtually nonexistent. I can agree that certain individuals will be racist, but one cop being racist in an entire department of cops does not mean there is an institutionalized issue, and can be cared for much easier; fire the ... • 3. The New Deal : The New Deal It all started back in 1929, the depression era. The stock market had recently crashed and people were desperate for hope. Unemployment was at its all time high, more than one fourth of the U.S population was unemployed and gradually increasing. At the time of when the depression first began, President Herbert Hoover was in power. During the depression people would wait in long lines just for a few bites to eat. Volunteers would hand out food to the hopeless and hungry people, these were commonly known as Soup kitchens in "Hoovervilles" . The soup kitchens and the help efforts that were in place during the depression were named after the president of the time. The struggles did not get any better until the start of the CCC, The Civilian Conservation Corp. The CCC or otherwise known as the Civilian Conservation Corp was a group, in the beginning there were about 250,000 young men that joined but towards the end of the program there was a total of 3 million enrollees! The young men were paid and well feed to work for their people and the environment which we now live in. The CCC began in the year 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt was the President of that time. He had witnessed the struggle his people were going through at the time of the depression and he had enough. After taking office in the year 1933 he acted fast and created the "New Deal". This New Deal was an effort to help the citizens of the United States come out of unemployment and to give back the people their lost ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Category And Summary Of The Lord Of The Flies Summary of the movie: A gathering of young men end up stranded on an island and begin getting to be plainly savage. Reasonable Ralph turns into the assigned pioneer of a group of military children who crash in the sea and wind up on a rich island. Initially, the gathering began as companions, cooperating to survive, however soon they split into two camps, the other drove by Jack, who winds up noticeably lopsided and somewhat vicious. Jack has a no–rules, savage operation, with his young men running chasing for pigs and plotting assaults on the adversary camp. The head of a pig is put on a stake, and turns into "The Lord of the Flies." There is tumult battling about essential items, for example, the conch shell, to some degree an image of who's in control, and a pair of glasses, used to start a fire. Jack and his rowdy young peers attempt to take these. In the meantime, the tranquil and intelligent kid Simon, of Jack's gathering, sets out and finds a cave where a "creature" lives, the beast being the plane's captain who survived and hung out there. Simon returns from the experience shaken and filthy, at camp the young men assault him with lances, slaughtering him. Afterward, Piggy, from Ralph's camp is murdered when a gigantic rock is pushed and falls on him. Ralph fears for his life, knowing very well indeed that Jack is currently after him. Flames are begun to bait him out of the wilderness. A group of American militaries arrives, and encountered upon the young men, putting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Darkness Of Light By Ambrose Bierce Ambrose Bierce was known as the "mist of light". His stories were usually centered on civil war. It was usually a horror or supernatural story, but it could be a comic or tall–tale as well. Bierce's "Chickamauga" is nothing short of a horror story. This story is known as one of the most powerful anti–war stories, and fits in with the literary criticism New Historicism. It is about a young boy around the age of 6 years, whose father had fought in the Civil War. We later find out that the young boy is deaf and mute. This, and him being only 6 years of age, causes him to be naïve about the things he sees in the forest one day when he gets lost. The story starts off with the young boy wandering off from the house he lives at, hoping to find an adventure. He even brought his wooden sword along to fight the "battles" he was to face. He soon realizes he is lost and gets startled by a rabbit, and he begins crying himself to sleep. When he sees the rabbit, he is "confronted with a new and more formidable enemy." This is an example of imagery in the story which is carried throughout the story (Bierce). When he finally awakes, he begins to see men crawling on their hands and feet toward him. This is one time his naïve ways get in the way. The narrator of the story says, "Something in this – something too, perhaps, in their grotesque attitudes and movements– reminded him of the painted clown whom he had seen last summer in the circus, and he laughed as he watched them." He didn't ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Scar Lord Of The Flies Quote Analysis Throughout the ages, symbolism has been used to entice and interest the reader through meaning. Without meaning, literature, like Lord of the Flies by William Golding, would not be the same as it is today. It is apparent that the novel is full of meaning and contains in depth knowledge about mankind. This is displayed through symbols and characters that appear to be more complex than they seem. These symbols, ones such as the scar, the fire, and the conch, are all used to help convey Golding's idea about the inner evil and desires in mankind. In Lord of the Flies, symbolism is everywhere, from a pair of glasses to a mountain. The book itself is an allegory for savagery and evil within mankind, but a symbol that truly supports Golding's idea is the scar. Simply speaking, the scar is a term for the crash site where the boys landed, but it is more than what it appears to be. The scar symbolizes destruction of paradise once mankind is brought into the picture, meaning man destroys paradise merely by entering it. The scar truly ties up with the message in Lord of the Flies, inner evil and it's destruction. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 13. Lord Of The Flies Chapter 1 Analysis The crying gradually died down. The tears step by step floated into abandoned wheezes, hiccups, and sneezes. Before long just a couple of littluns remained sneezing, rubbing their running noses with the back of their grimy hands. Hush at that point set over the island, the thundering of the irate fire apparently quieted out of sight as the young men held up, breathing shoddily. There was a respite lastly the man – the adult – swung back to confront the nasty nosed, puffy peered toward youngsters. They looked at him with wide, red, tearstained eyes. The maritime officer – an adult, Ralph couldn't trust it – moved awkwardly under the young men's gapes, at last swinging to the self–acclaimed pioneer and yelped. "You – You said you were in ... The individuals who remained looked as the watercraft left the shore, delicately bouncing with the waves. Nobody addressed each other; nobody took a gander at each other. They remained with their backs to the consuming backwoods. The officer came back with another watercraft and officer, and six children floated off towards the security and assurance of the outside world. It proceeded with like that until the point when just three remained. The twins sat off to the side, not setting out to gaze toward Ralph as they sat tight for the last watercraft to return. The sun was setting, and the fire still crackled fiercely out of sight. Ralph sat with his head on his knees, confronting the water and looking as the impression of the fire moved over the surface. His eyes checked the shoreline and he saw the place he had first blown the conch and called the gathering. That helped him to remember Piggy and he immediately dismissed, looking down at the sand. It got his attention as effectively as it had some time recently, this time helped with the impression of the fire out of sight. He bounced for it, startling Samneric behind him, and started burrowing at the sand. A little while later, the pale shell started to show up. • 15. The Vietnam War Protests The Vietnam War protests happened in the 1960s in America and was a part of the Cold War. People and specifically, youths, such as college students, protested mostly about the draft and the inhumane conditions and implications of the war. There were many violent street protests that escalated into violent riots and fires. The Tunisian or "Jasmine" Revolution took place from 2010–2011 in Tunisia. The youth, such as young adults, protested mostly about government corruption such as repression of civil liberties and rights. Both these protests were spurred and carried on mainly by passionate youth activists. While the characteristics for youth activism in both America and Tunisia are similar in that they both included violent protests and arson, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Youth chose to protest because their peers, friends, and family members were being drafted as a part of the Selective Service Act, which forced American men to register with a local draft board once they became 18 years old (Brannan, "the United States v. O'Brien"). The draft made many youths upset because they felt that it was unfair that the people they cared about were forced to fight in a war that they did not believe in or want to fight in, as many felt that the United States soldiers were too harsh towards the Vietnamese who posed no direct threat to the United States. It was felt that the young men were fighting the war waged by old men. In addition, many felt empathetic towards the young men who fought, as youth felt upset that some people who were the same age of them died, and that those men could have been them. This is why many youths turned towards activism in order to protest against the Vietnam War. Protests against the Vietnam War were a very common form of expression on college campuses. One of the most famous protests on college campuses happened on the Kent State University Campus in Kent, Ohio. The drafting of students, specifically for the invasion of Cambodia, caused students to hold a rally on May 1st, 1970 and burn down the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) building. There was another rally 4 days later, which included 2,000 students. The National Guard showed up and opened fire killing 4 students and wounding 9 others. This event became known as the Kent State Massacre (Batchelor, "Kent State Massacre"). The students burned down the ROTC building because some people would go there and enlist because they knew they were going to get drafted, so enlisting would at least give them the choice to be higher in rank and gain more privilege. Therefore, the ROTC building symbolized U.S. soldiers going to fight ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Maturity In Stephen Crane's The Red Badge Of Courage As men battle against men on the field, their breath heavy, their bodies torn, their love for their country strong, they face the many grim and grotesque features of war. Watching their fellow companions, some friends, others family, expire before their eyes, realizing that they, too, could meet the same fate, wishing to return home to their wives and kids where they would be safe, men change in war. Young soldiers, naively entering battle yearning for exhilarating action and hoping to become the next epic hero, soon realize that war is vastly different from their fantasies. Battle hardens soldiers. Boys mature into men. Men grow wiser. No man that enters warfare is left unscathed. Maturity is an essential result of war. Stephen Crane, the author ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Red Badge of Courage, Stephen Crane depicts maturity through the soldiers' experiences and hardships in battle. As he matures in battle, Henry Fleming progresses from a scared, young soldier to one of the best fighters of his regiment. Similar to other young men hoping to join the Union army, Henry enlists into battle with visions "of vague and bloody conflicts that [thrill] him in their sweep and fire." However, Henry fears that he may not have what it takes to emulate the Homeric heroes of the past, believing that he may lack the fortitude to endure battle and, therefore, flee from the conflict. His fears become reality at the second Confederate charge when the persistence of the rebels and the fleeing men of his regiment convince Henry to abscond from the scene. The events of the second charge complicate Henry's assumption of the nature of war, as he fled from the skirmish instead of fighting like a brave warrior. This moment of the novel is an essential element of Henry's maturation. At this point, Henry realizes that war involves more than what Homer's epics and his childhood fantasies convey. He comes to the conclusion that he lost his honor that day for he lacks a "red badge of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Lord Of The Flies Critical Analysis Lord of the Flies, a nonfiction novel, was written by William Golding in 1954. Golding tells the tale of British school boys who are stranded on an island after the plane that attempted to save them from the war, was shot down. The young men, who are left alone with no parents, attempt to form a tribe for their survival. Members of the tribe are given different occupations such as hunters, builders of fire, builders of shelters, and gathers. The tribe begins to falter when the boys form different opinions of what is the most significant key to survival. Golding illustrates the darker side of civilization through his own unique style. Golding was in the Royal Navy during World War II. Golding saw many deplorable and appalling things while serving in the war. The dark elements of the novel reflect his experiences. "The Spear moved forward inch by inch and the terrified squealing became a high pitched scream. Then Jack found the throat and the hot blood sprouted over his hands."(Goulding, William. "Chapter 8." Lord of the Flies. New York, NY: Penguin Group, 2011. 189. Print. ) In this scene from the book, Jack and his tribe killed the pig. Golding's war experience allowed him to provide vivid literary examples to the reader. Golding also incorporated the "slang" or local flare, to the young boys' conversations. This clever writing style helped showed the origin and life in society before the boys were stranded on the island. Characterization was also used by Goulding. Golding used characters to represent aspects of mankind. Piggy represented reason and thought. Jack however, represented barbaric force and anger which is often suppressed in normal society. Golding illustrates a marvelous tale with vivid description, clever word choice, and use of dialogue between the characters. While reading, several quotes spoke to me personally and were highpoints of the novel. One such quote came from the scene where Simon has a close encounter with the "beast". "There isn't anyone to help you. Only me. And I'm the Beast. . . . Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill! . . . You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you? Close, close, close! • 21. The Night of Fire The Night (Fire engine, boys, rain) April 24th, 2012; the sound of the news on the television hums in the background drowned out by people talking and laughing. Fire Station 141 is buzzing with life; everything is in calm and peaceful; when suddenly a loud screaming sound rings through the brick walls. All of the men in the station startle to attention and rush around in organized chaos. The shuffling of boots on the smooth concrete floors and ruffling of thick fire suits is drowned out by the resounding alarm. The men pile into the large red trucks and screech out of the station. The alarm becomes silent and the station is abandoned and the only sound it the news humming in the background. The men hardly fit in the small quarters of the truck. The smell of burnt rubber and gasoline fill the cramped space. The sirens atop the thick metal roof of the truck bounce back and forth on houses and cars nearby. Dark clouds start to form above the speeding truck and soon the rain is playing a soft beat on the roof. The cold weather creates a pale fog against the window. Everything starts to slow down and become faded, the dark night outside the window now is everywhere and a group of boys are playing baseball. The ball is a dirty cream color and is throwing off water as it spins through the air, then smack it hits a leather glove with an explosion of water up into a young boy's smiling face. • 23. Female Inequality : A Patriarchal Society Our society has always been believed to be patriarchal society, with female inequality in representative roles, the absence of a female president and the misogynistic opinion of some men to prove it. In fact, Socrates stated that "Once made equal to a man, woman becomes his superior" which is exactly what Mycenaean men feared most. Ancient Greece was a very patriarchal society, and we owe much of that to the Mycenaean men who structured their myths to the benefit of men. However, it wasn't always this way. In Crete there was a society of women called the Minoans who ruled as a matriarchal society that was not nomadic and centered their life on fertility and Gaea, the mother earth. The Minoan society believed that men weren't connected to the earth because they weren't able to produce babies; nevertheless, they believed that men had some fertility so they would sacrifice men to female goddesses to ensure fertility. When the Mycenaean men saw this they knew that they had to avoid the Minoan rule anyway possible. Therefore, the Mycenaean came and pillaged through Crete overthrowing the Minoan society to guarantee that the Minoan way of life would not resurface. Mycenaean men took advantage of what they had seen the Minoan culture do and intricately structured myths displaying rules that the proper Greek should follow in hope that people would follow and not revert to the Minoan ways. Edith Hamilton's Mythology introduces those myths with clarity, in–depth analysis of each myth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Who Was Responsible For The Triangle Fire The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire happened on March 25, 1911. The Triangle Fire is remembered as one of the most tragic workplace incidents in the history of Industrial America. This tragic fire killed 146 female factory workers, some as young as age 15. During this time there was many problems with sweatshops and unsafe working conditions, this fire proved those problems to be true. The Triangle Shirtwaist Company was owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris. The company was started by Blanck and Harris in 1900. Their company occupied the top three floors (8,9,10) of the Asch Building in Manhattan. Each floor of their company had hundreds of girls at sewing machines, the floors were very overcrowded. The building also had a fire escape, but it was very narrow and couldn't get that many people down it fast enough. With what happened on the Triangle Fire of 1911, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris should be blamed for the tragic aftermath and so many women dead with the fire. Their punishment for 146 females dying was very inadequate. Seeming how they did not take the proper safety precautions and their factory was not up to city codes. Blanck and Harris did not get charged of manslaughter or anything for the 146 females dying in this fire, though they definitely should have. There had been strikes in years before about better working conditions and more safe precautions in the factory. One reporter that was an eyewitness to the fire said, "I remembered their great strike of last year, in which these girls demanded more sanitary workrooms, and more safety precautions in the shops. These dead bodies told the results." 1 The workers wanted safer conditions the year before, so much so that they went on strike. It is inevitable that we will die, but dying young is a tale that Norman Maclean serves us in Young Men and Fire. Maclean devours the anguish of dying young to the passion of the Christ. Maclean's background allows him to tell this tale with a divine humility, enabling him to seize this matter with solemnity and respect. While a Christians' honor Christ's sacrifice for us, Normal Maclean shines respect and honor on the tragic death of the brave men who lost their lives in the raging mountain wildfire. Normal Maclean searches for the truth when thirteen smokejumpers' lost their lives in the Mann Gulch fire in 1949, giving the reader some hope that God had a plan for their journey. It was in the year 1949 on August 10 when Norman Maclean observed the Mann Gulch fire and became attached to it. William Butler Yeats was a poet of the twentieth century, a time of change with world wars, revolutions, technology change, and much more. William Yeats is considered the most important poet of the twentieth century. "The Irish poet and dramatist William Butler Yeats (1865–1939) was perhaps the greatest poet of the 20th century. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1923 and was the leader of the Irish Literary Renaissance"(Gale). Yeats started his career with plays, and eventually moved to poetry. Poetry gave him a loud voice to express what he wanted. One of his most remembered pieces of work is Sailing to Byzantium. In Yeats's Sailing to Byzantium three messages are displayed. In Sailing to Byzantium, William Yeats expresses the message of young people only being interested in the present. When people are young they are inexperienced and dumb. Yeats acknowledges this idea in his poem and explains the idea that being young is fun, young people like to be together, or in love. He realizes young people are only interested in the present and nothing else. "Caught in that sensual music all neglect, monuments of unaging intellect"(1). Yeats explains that the old will try and give wisdom to the young, but it's useless because the young doesn't wish to listen. The young are too busy living life to the fullest, to sit down and listen to the words of a wise old man. Yeats ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The empathic reader also develops his own saga as he views the tale through the eyes of the foreman Dodge, and the other two survivors, Sallee and Rumsey. Maclean, reconstructed the tragedy, much like coaches review the films of athletic competitions that challenged their squads to the nth degree. Over and over, Maclean reviews each minute detail, scouring them for something that might reveal a hint of an explanation or some resolution to help reduce the terrible grief of such an untimely occurrence. Although the young men died like squirrels in Mann Gulch, the Mann Gulch fire should not end there, smoke drifting away and leaving terror without consolation of explanation, and controversy without lasting settlement. Probably most catastrophes end this way without an ending, the dead not even knowing how they died but "still alertly erect in fear and wonder," those who loved them forever questioning "this unnecessary death," and the rest of us tiring of this inconsolable catastrophe and turning to the next one. • 49. Cause And Effect Of The Triangle Fire Cause and Effect During the 18th century, England and the Americas were mostly agricultural based societies. The majority of people lived in rural communities, worked at home, and used basic tools or handmade machinery in order to make a living for their family. Soon, the innovation in the textile and iron industries created a shift towards the Industrial Revolution, and many people began to migrate to more urban areas in order to work in factories. Although the revolution was faced with many problems, such as grim employment and living conditions for the poor and working classes, industrial growth helped the economy as there was a boom in manufactured goods at lowered costs. The United States, during this time, was rapidly expanding, and industry was growing by leaps and bounds. In New York City, the garment industry flourished which led to the immigration boom as people, mainly from Europe, immigrated to America for a better life and for better economic opportunities. The Triangle Fire, by Jo Ann E. Argersinger is set during the time of the Progressive era in America and details a turning point in American history. Culturally, many immigrants began to embrace American lifestyle; although, they still had strong ties to their own traditions which caused the concept of "the melting pot." Symbolism In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies In literature, symbolism is one of the most important aspects in telling a story; without this, a story would simply appear to be inconsequential and have no reason. Throughout William Golding's Lord of the Flies, it is portrayed that with a lack of unity, rules and order comes the dismantlement of civilization. Over the course the novel, Golding uses a number of symbols to represent these themes, most importantly though, piggy's glasses. He uses this object in particular to symbolize Piggy's feel for reason and universal ethical laws by which all human beings should follow; while on the other hand, for Jack and the other "savages", it is are a tool to control the children and that is why Jack feels the need to break them. Firstly, the glasses are worn by Piggy to see, however the young men soon find another utilization for them. These glasses are a representation of Piggy's intellect and need for order. At whatever point Piggy wears these glasses he is scholarly, while without them, he can't see which renders him useless. When the other boys take them from Piggy he cries, "'My specs!' howled Piggy. 'Give me my specs!'" (Golding 41). The glasses likewise mean power since they are used to begin a fire. The use of "my friend" (25) is ironic and betrays his anger as he holds these people responsible for what he and so many others has had to encounter and says that if only they were there to observe the horror of the war then they would realize the extent of the "old Lie"(Line 27). Owen alludes to the title in the final line of the poem "Dulce et Decorum est pro Patria Mori" (Line 28). "Dulce et Decorum est" means it is sweet and right to die for your country. In other words, it is wonderful and a great honor to fight and die for your country. He is trying to say that it isn't true and that's the "old Lie" war isn't as glorious as its made out to be. • 61. Book Review of 'Triangle: The Fire That Changed America' Triangle: The Fire That Changed America New York: First Grove Press David Von Drehle 2003 Book Review 1. Did the author make a complete and honest analysis of the topic? This book is about the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City in March, 1911. The factory claimed the lives of 146 women and men, mostly young women, during the 30 minutes that the fire blazed. It is still the largest industrial disaster that has ever happened in New York City. The author of the book writes more as a novelist than as a historian because he seems to want to draw his audience into the different scenes of the book. He begins by describing a section of sidewalk popularly termed "Misery Lane" (Drehle, 3). He follows the actions of one young man and his aunt who are looking at coffins trying to determine if any of the young women represented there are among the three relatives that he lost. He is walking with his aunt Rosa who suggests that a young woman is one of the girls, but they later determine that it is not. The story continues like this, giving personal accounts as nearly as the author could, which makes it seem more like a story than an actual historical event. The author starts with Misery Lane, where the bodies were taken, but he quickly moves through the years preceding the fire, and then he talks about the aftermath of the blaze. The author describes the building in which the fire took place and the workers who waited outside on the fateful day to gain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Essay On Triangle Fire The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire was an infamous part of our history as a nation. The fire began on the eighth floor of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory and quickly spread all throughout the building. The fire took almost one hundred and fifty lives, most of them being young women or girls. It was not just the fire that took so many lives though, but women and men alike jumping from many stories up, to their death, just to have a possibility to live. However, many women and men alike were brought to safety by some of the students at the adjacent law school to the factory. Elias Kanter and Charles T. Kremer, as well as other several students, were able to put some ladders down to the same level as the roof of the factory and help bring many people to safety. Kremer was even willing to go back down into the factory while it was on fire and managed to save one poor girl whose hair was on fire. Their bravery assuredly made a difference in the lives of numerous of the factory workers. The smoke from the now roaring fire could be seen seeping out the windows where girls stood at the ledge, just waiting to jump; screams could be heard while the young women were looking down at the ... • 65. Comparing The Open Boat And To Build A Fire The illusion of free will is dominant as a theme in both the "The Open Boat" by Stephen Crane and "To Build a Fire" by Jack London, as the characters struggle to stay alive in the face of the unforgiving environment. For instance, in "The Open Boat" the characters try to fight against the ocean and the environment around them, but they soon realize it is the environment controlling them and their fighting is of no use. In the story "To Build a Fire", the main character has allowed his mind to deceive himself as he perceives himself safe in the arctic, but that all changes when the fire goes out and the cold environment absorbs him. However, the difference between the two stories is that the environment in "To Build a Fire" suppresses the man, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the illusion is far greater in the story "To Build a Fire" as the character is figuratively absorbed by the environment, while only one of the men die in "The Open Boat". Furthermore, the control of the environment on the characters is immense in the story "To Build a Fire", "He was losing in his battle with the frost. It was creeping into his body from all sides." (1057) The environment literally takes control of the man's fate, while the men in "The Open Boat" are pushed around a little less dramatically, "The wind bore coldness with it, and the men began to shiver. Holy smoke! Said one, allowing his voice to express his impious mood" (998). In addition, the tone or mood of both stories differs even they both are controlled by the environment. The tone of "To Build a Fire" is frightening as the cold arctic air takes hold of the man, "A certain fear of death, dull and oppressive came to him......it was a matter of life and death with chances against him" (1056). Moreover, the story "The Open Boat" is slightly less dramatic as all but one man makes it shore safely. Finally, the environment proves that free will is an illusion in both short ... • 67. Analysis Of New West Old Story By Timothy Egan In his article "New West, Old Story," Timothy Egan discusses the death of several young firefighters, known as the Hotshots, who died in a large brush fire protecting property and he asks, "what did they die for?" He compares them to the firefighters who died in the aftermath of the terror attack on September 11th 2001, highlighting how the September 11th firefighters died saving lives while the Hotshots died protecting property. He goes on to tell of how in the moment most people are frustrated with firefighters for not going fast enough. He follows later by quoting a homeowner who praises the men that saved her home. Overall, he analyzes the situation and leaves his audience with a view swayed by deployment of rhetorical devices. In his introduction, Egan uses imagery and rhetorical questions to sway the opinion of his audience. "What did they die for?" he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This article is supposed to be about the death of young firefighters and questioning the philosophies that lead to their deaths, which is where it was going initially; Egan, on the other hand, took it as an opportunity to attack the political views of others. Egan's anti–Republican views that can be found in his more current articles that attack the Republican nominee for president, Donald Trump are reflected in his statement. By inserting his political opinion into the article Egan is reaching out to liberal readers, causing them to reflect on their political leaders and make opinions based on Egan's words, opinions that should not be created from an article like "New West, Old Story". The entire statement is a gap in the article, Egan is discussing the philosophy of living in fire country, but then he takes a break to attack political ideology. Throughout the film the patriotic feeling depicted in the film was very encouraging, telling everyone to sign up to support their country. However not everyone is in support of the war. • 73. Battle Of Thermopylae Battle Analysis The Battle of Thermopylae, perhaps one of the most well–known ancient battles in history, has been written about many times since event first occurred thousands of years ago. Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield, however, puts a unique spin on it. Pressfield covers not only the battle, but the Spartans that made up the battle. He gives an in–depth view of what he thinks Spartans really were like. The character and values that Spartans hold dear is described in great detail. The Spartans are described in the usual way. They are fearless, religious, and hold their virtues to a very high standard. Pressfield shows their fearlessness in several ways. First, the Spartans are going to a battle, and a child no more than 12 years old sneaks off to participate in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Gates of Fire" explains that the messes and battle drills are used to teach the kids very important aspects of being the best Spartan. Pressfield also stressed the brevity that the Spartan warriors possess. The Spartans did not give any long speeches, and several Spartans would only consider talking if they believed it would help their younger Spartan in training. Several times a character would stop talking if he believed he had rambled too far away from the message. The Spartan culture is a part of the Spartan legend as much as the Spartiates themselves. Many beliefs and habits can be used to describe the culture of Sparta. Pressfield describes the "agoge", the training for the young Spartan children, and how brutal and harsh it can be. This training however, is an essential part of Sparta. Without this, the Spartiates wouldn't possess all these virtues. The brotherhood that the Spartiates share with one another is also described. By battling, the men form a close bond with one another that allows Spartans to engage each other so casually.*** The messes of the men are another element that adds to the Spartan culture. The messes are the source of much bonding and mental training for the younger ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the beginning, according to Robert Fletcher, director of CCC objectives and results report from 1938 digital archives. "There were close to 300,00 men enrolled". Mt Nebo, one of Arkansas first state parks had CCC company 1780–V which was a group of veterans from southern states worked to build Mt Nebo's historical cabins, hiking trails, fire pits, roads, pavilions and bridges. There are thousands of pages written in dedication to these men and their efforts created by a social need to put men back to work during the depression. The CCC's stories and legacies are well document through history, as it changed and formed our countryside. FDR claimed that as the country grew the population migrated across the land to reap its benefit, in doing so Americans also destroyed the land without regard for future. Another way to view the CCC project was an effort to revitalize what we had taken from the land and preserve it for future generations, in doing so it also provided jobs, education, skills, protection and ... Einhardt reached out, grabbing a rough bowl from the gnarled hands of the camp's cook. She was a gray haired old crone, dressed a large homespun tunic. She had one good eye, and smiled at him, with an eerie grin on her face, as she murmured some strange blessing in a foreign tongue. The bowl was less of a bowl, he supposed, and more of big cup, but the grumbling of his stomach quieted further thoughts. He drank it down in a big gulp, the taste of leek and peas hitting his taste buds, and the all too brief flavor of pork eluding him.
