Thomas Nagel 's Theory Of Death Essay
In this paper, I will first elaborate on my understanding of Thomas Nagel's theory as to why death, a permanent nonexistent state, is an undesirable state
of being. I will then argue as to why I believe that death is a misfortune using the argument that death terminates the positive experience of life as well
as rebut the counter–argument for why death is good because it gives meaning to life.
Nagel champions the belief that death, a state of permanent posthumous nonexistence defined as "unsupplemented by any form of conscious survival"
(769), is an occurrence that harms us. Nagel's first argument for why death is bad is that it deprives us of life, of which contains various goods that
make life valuable. Nagel supports his argument by saying that "if he [the man] had not died, he would have continued to live it, and to possess
whatever good there is in living" (772). He continues to list goods such as "perception, desire, activity and thought" (769) as he believes that these
are the essential elements to a person meaningful life. Though Nagel concedes that the goods he listed entail both joy and misery, as they are also
fundamental factors of life, he also believes that a life which has more misery than it does joy is still desirable and should not make death seem like

I was a typical 19 year old kid out of high school. I had no inspiring ideas as to what I wanted to be when I grew up. I had a lot of energy with a
rebellious attitude. I went drinking and went clubs that I had no business being in with my "friends" and made some bad decisions. I lived on my
brother's ratty brown couch, in hind sight I was wasting away physically and wasting my life all in one shot. One day I was faced with a serious
decision. Either I am going to continue down the path of destruction and watch my brother get hurt because of me or I get out of my dangerous
lifestyle and become something more. I choose the Marine Corps. Little did I know I just choose to leave behind who I was to become the best man I
never knew I could be.
I will never forget the day I walked into the recruiters office, I was really nervous. The room was clean with posters covering the walls that said
"The Few, the Proud, the Marines", then there was the recruiter in his dress blues. I knew then that I wanted to be a hero like all the action stars I
saw in the movies, I wanted to be strong, and of course I wanted all the girls. After discussing my options me and the recruiter went over the paper
