 Fabrication, welding, cutting, and brazing are hazardous
activities which pose both safety and health risks to over
500,000 workers in a wide variety of industries.
 The risk from fatal injuries is more than four deaths per
thousand workers over a working lifetime.
 It is difficult to list all the health effects of welding
exposures because the fumes may contain so many
different substances that are known to be harmful
 The individual components of welding “smoke” can affect
just about any part of the body, including the lungs, heart,
kidneys, & central nervous system

3. HEALTH HAZARDS
There are numerous health hazards associated with exposure to
fumes, gases and ionizing radiation formed or released during
welding, cutting and brazing, including:
• Heavy metal poisoning,
• Lung cancer,
• Metal fume fever,
• Flash burns, and others

tested
If scrapings burn, coating(s) must be removed before
proceeding

 Designated walkways are clearly marked and free from all obstructions.

 Metal scraps should be removed after each shift. Some waste must be
removed immediately
 Segregate waste at source
 Follow proper waste disposal procedures
