Question 1
1. In which way does your media product use, develop or
challenge the forms and conventions of media products?
2. Main Task- Movie Trailer
My movie trailer- in comparison with other media products- is quite similar to the conventions that would be
used for the genre and the way in which it is presented. I had originally looked at style models to get ideas
from them and see what conventions are mostly used. As my genre is Dystopian, I had found the
conventions of other media products to be simple to congregate. A main convention was that the music
used throughout built up until about half way. One the music had built up, it would then show the action
scenes. I used this for my trailer using a music piece called 'Mercury Rises'.
Another convention used was the actual scenes filmed. All of the scenes seemed to focus on one person
but included other people in order to show the action shots. This was a benefit for my trailer because I
needed a main character to portray the storyline. Additional characters where used however, their names
where not used as they where there to create action scenes and interaction with the main character.
To develop other media product's conventions I had the idea to show more of the characters interaction with
the story line. Without giving too much to the storyline, it shows the frustration of the character without the
solution to any problems. This creates the suspense of wanting to see the movie as the audience would be
unsure of the how the story will play out. With other media products, people can predict what is going to
happen withe the story most of the time.
I challenged the conventions of other media products as my trailer doesn't focus on a romance side of the
story. With the style models, a romance was shown in at least two scenes of the trailer. With my trailer, due
to not being able to find someone to do it, I resulted in leaving it out and focus more on the action shots.
However, this is also what was hoped for from my trailer. As the romance is not a big part in the story, I
wanted to show what the main storyline was about through shots of the singular character going insane and
having to challenge themselves.
3. Movie Poster
With my movie poster, I looked at style models of other movie posters
from the same genre in order to compare conventions and figure out what
the regular ones are as opposed to the more personal ones to the specific
film. The more regular ones included the action shot for the main image
that was common in all of the dystopian posters. I had also done some
research into action movie posters, that usually has a mid shot or close up
of the main characters face. However, taking both genres into
consideration, I had decided the more effective was to present the movie
would be to have the action shot movie poster used in the dystopian
genre.
Develop- In regards to developing my media products, I have used a
number of conventions that I have found looking at style models that
relate to the genre. Equipping and developing these conventions where
found in my research when constructing my own media product. I found
there to be reoccurrences of conventions In media products that I related
to my own.
To challenge the conventions of other media products I had decided to
use a different image than a dystopian poster would have. For example,
most of the style models that I have looked at have the main character in
a battle and they will be looking away from the audience whilst in an action
shot with a blurred background. However, with mine I wanted to make the
premise clear that she is in a battle with herself. For this I had centered
the image so that she was looking directly at the audience. I created the
shadow below her to show the opposing side to her personality. This
meaning that she realizes that she must be confined away and kept in the
dark but cant help but fight and break free.
4. Magazine Cover
The use of conventions for my magazine cover all came from style
models that I had researched into. These being ‘EMPIRE’ and ‘FILM’
magazine. With choosing empire magazine as the model to use for my
magazine, I had chosen it because the other images used on the style
models where all for big movies that had an action sort of shot for the
cover.
I developed my magazine using the conventions of the music
magazine by looking at the other style models and develop my own
ideas form their existing ones. For example, I had used some headline
from previous issues of the magazine however, changing the wording
slightly in order to make it relevant to this year and movies that are in
progress as of now.
I challenged other media conventions by using a different color
scheme. Other style models, I have found, change the style of the
magazine logo and headings in order to suite the image for when a big
movie is coming out. This gives the audience an idea that it is going to
be a big movie and make it look limited edition. I had changed the
colors to suit y main image and to make the cup stand out with the
glowing around it.
