With a decrease in algae population, the grasses of the bay will be fed on by zooplankton, oysters,
and fish. Without the algae, there would be a huge decrease in Bay grasses. This happens because
Zooplankton, oysters, and fish will no longer eat the algae, they would resort to the Bay grasses. The
effects then go onto the plants and animals living here. (Science Daily) Since the algae population
decreases, so does the algae bloom, which sink to the bottom and decompose to create oxygen many
underwater animals need. Some blooms also produce toxins, which can harm or kill the fish, harm
animals that drink the water, and cause problems for humans as well. With a decrease in algae
blooms, plants and animals would no longer have a steady population. They would end up ... Show

Citizens are also asked to keep a watchful eye out for possible HABs are urged to report suspected
HABs to their respective state environmental agency. (Chesapeake Bay Programs) (Article 1)
Lastly, I will explain the dead zone of the chesapeake Bay. Excessive Nitrogen and Phosphrous
pollution from human activities cause "Dead Zones" , which are areas with low amounts of oxygen.
With little or no oxygen, fish, crabs, oysters, and other aquatic animals literally suffocate. Further
excess in nutrients also fuels the growth of dense algae blooms that block sunlight that underwater
grasses need to grow in order to continue providing food for waterfowl and shelter for blue crabs
and juvenile fish. (Chesapeake Bay Foundation) (Dead Zones)
When there are excessive loads of Nitrogen and Phosphorous in the water, Alage can "bloom" to
harmful levels, changing water color, and eventually stripping dissolved oxygen from the water
when they die, fall to the bottom, and decay. This dissolved oxygen is critical to the health of the

Chesapeake Bay Ecosystem Research Paper
Chapter II: Conservation of Specific Functions, Habitats, Features and Species
Many habitats in the Chesapeake Bay watershed are degrading by time and losing their
functionality. Because it sounds as "Utopia" to conserve and protect all the habitats in such a
complex ecosystem, the most important habitats shall be targeted. These specific habitats are the
wetlands, riparian forest and streams. Each of these habitats represents one of the essential
landscape ecology principles. Wetlands act as buffer zone and provide critical habitat to some
species in the Bay. It is important to sustain the Estuarine Emergent Wetlands in order to provide a
place for breeding, nursery and reproduction. The riparian forest buffer represents the patch edge
which normally functions as a filter that reduces the surrounding influence on the interior patch, the
Bay and wetlands (Dramstad, Olson and Forman, 1996:29). The forests filter ... Show more content

Besides, the streams or river systems act as corridors. A continuous stream corridor is necessary to
maintain landscape connectivity and aquatic conditions including cool water temperature and high
oxygen content (Dramstad, Olson and Forman, 1996:40).
The above mentioned habitats are crucial because it support priority species in the Bay. Although
more than 3,600 different species of plants and animals live in the tidal waters of the Bay, there are
priority species that shall be protected. The most important keystone species are the Blue Crab, the
Oysters, the Bald Eagle and the Black Duck. Keystone species are valuable components at the
community scale because they maintain biodiversity and influence critical ecological process (Peck,
1998:34). Blue crabs not only

The Is The Only Activity That Benefits The Bay
"Shellfish is the only activity that benefits the bay,"(Sam Houghton, 2015) said Mr.Cook one of the
Popponesset Bay three leading oyster farmers. In 2004 the town of Mashpee began restoring oyster
aquaculture as a way to remove nitrogen from Popponesset Bay (Sam Houghton, 2015). The towns
oyster aquaculture program has grown to 2,000,000 oysters annually (Sam Houghton, 2015). The
town of Mashpee installed their first oyster beds in 2004 and were soon followed by the
Wampanoags and Richard Cook. The Wampanoags installed their first oyster beds in 2009 (K Clark,
2014). Richard Cook has been shellfishing since 1984 in Popponesset Bay. In 2015 new oyster beds
created by the town of Mashpee were put in in Shoestring bay, a part of Popponesset Bay. The
purpose of this experiment is to test the water quality, focusing on nitrogen levels around oyster
beds of varying ages in Popponesset Bay. The map below shows the three beds where water quality
will be tested. The one in Figure 1 represents the town of Mashpee's one year old bed. The 2 in
Figure 1 represents the Wampanoag oyster beds which are 6 years old. The 3 in Figure 1 is the
oldest bed in Popponesset Bay, the town's 11 years old beds.
Figure 1. Popponesset Bay, Cape Cod, MA
Looking at the effectiveness of oyster beds is important because bodies of water can die if there is
too much nitrogen. Nitrogen helps algae growth, which can lead to an overgrowth of algae that can
cause not enough light to reach the other plants and

The New England And Chesapeake
In the 1600s, America began colonization. Each colony had a specific goal or aspiration that it
planned to achieve. These colonies were separated into different regions among America. Two
specific regions that many historians tend to articulate about. Consisting of Massachusetts,
Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, the New England region presents many intriguing
ways of achieving their goals. Likewise, the Chesapeake Bay, which contain Virginia, Maryland,
North Carolina and part of South Carolina, also have their own ways of achieving different goals.
While many focus on the differences of each region, others focus on the similarities that each of the
regions possess. Using common knowledge and the historical documents that have been stumbled
on over the past number of years, the reader will be able to understand the differences and
similarities between the New England and Chesapeake regions as well as determine whether the
differences or similarities benefit the colonies. Of the two regions, the New England colonies
represent a civil and denominated society. The founders portray those who seek to escape religious
victimization that Britain brought down on them. The colonies are obvious companions of God as
document 2–2 says, "For the persons, wee are a company professing our selves fellow members of
Christ." The law of New England strictly bases itself on God's law. Its political structure consists of
the lower level and the colonial level governments. At the

The Worst Day Of My Life Essay
4:30 am, my alarm wakes me from dreams of home. I 'm confused, "Where am I?", I asked myself.
Then I remembered, I 'm at the Naval Academy, Bancroft hall to be more specific. "Another day,
Another dollar", I reluctantly said for the seventh and final time. My bunkmate heard my alarm and
woke with a similar reaction. "You know what today is right?", he said to me in an uneasy voice.
"Yeah, today 's wet and sandy, the so called worst day of your life. Or so I 'm told.", I replied. "You
know there 's a reason they have wet and sandy for the final day", my bunkmate said. "If they had
wet and sandy on the first day, everybody would just go home early, but since today 's the last day,
you get to leave directly after" he stated. "It 's like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
About 1 mile into the disgustingly difficult task it began to rain, hard. As I crawled ever forward
behind my squad members who were running, the pouring rain filled the dirt path with mud. Now I
was essentially swimming in a foot of mud, and the only thing that came to my mind is "Don 't give
up". Every ten feet or so I would look ahead and mark a tree in the distance and say to myself "just
get to that tree, if you get to that tree then everything will be alright" My method of pushing forward
got me to the hospital point beach, While I was completely exhausted, my squad members were fine
because they got to run on two feet, I had to run on four. The workout, appropriately titled "Wet and
Sandy" was set to begin. "Okay, now that everybody is here run into the Chesapeake Bay and cover
yourself with as much sand as possible. Then come back to hospital point, you have 30 seconds.
Go". The entire squad bolted for the sea and began to cover themselves with sand. As quickly as
possible we threw sand all over our bodies, fully clothed mind you, and ran back to hospital point.
"33 seconds" the two seals stated with a smile on their faces. "You didn 't make the time, so know
your gonna do the exact same thing until we say stop," they said. For the next 25 minutes, we
continuously ran into the Chesapeake Bay, covered ourselves sand and sprinted back to hospital
point. All along the way, I would look in the distance, mark a spot on the ground and say "just get to

The colonists of the Chesapeake Bay region, on the other hand, led harder lives compared to that of
the colonists of New England. The Chesapeake Bay had an unhealthy environment, bad eating diets,
and intolerable labor.
The colonists had different reasons for settling in these two distinct regions. The New England
region was a more religiously strict yet diverse area compared to that of the Chesapeake Bay. The
development of religion in the two regions came from separate roots. After Henry VIII and the
Roman Catholic Church broke away from each other, a new group of English reformers was created
called the Puritans. The Puritans came from protestant backgrounds, after being influenced by
Calvinistic ideas. When their reforms were thwarted by King James I of England, they fled to the
New World in what is now known as the "Great Migration". The Puritans were then joined by
Quakers, Protestants, and Catholics in the religiously diverse New England area. These diverse
religious factions were allowed to live freely but under the laws of New England. It was due to this
religious freedom that these people came to escape religious persecution back home. The New
Englanders had a religion–based society and religion was based on family. As the Bible highly
regarded family, it condemned adultery. Adultery was considered a punishable crime. Adulterers
were marked as impure by a letter "A" stitched on their

Chesapeake Life History
Between 1813 and 1962, steamboats ruled the Chesapeake Bay, reflected in a fascinating and
important era, in which trade and travel were made more convenient with steamers that linked parts
of Maryland and Virginia, with distant and isolated rural communities along the Eastern Shore, in
particular, including Piankatank River and Occohannock Creek in Virginia, Hudson Creek off the
Little Choptank River in Maryland, Bushwood, and Rock Point It made possible access to certain
goods and services typically unavailable east of the Bay, along with opportunities for leisure and
entertainment.
There were various types of steamboats on the Chesapeake Bay, all serving a specific function. The
packet steamboats were the most common, were medium–sized and fast, and transported
passengers, freight and domestic mail. The rural areas and the city were made accessible with a
large fleet of smaller vessels–steam ferries, while excursion steamers or showboats were more
elaborate, colorful and beautifully decorated made drop–offs at popular resorts on the Bay, including
Tolchester and Betterton in Kent County.

A Brief Note On The Chesapeake Bay Game
In the UVA Chesapeake Bay Game, I was assigned the role of a Crop Farmer number for the the
Potomac River watershed. In the Bay game, the crop farmer controls several things, including the
type of farming used, the number of acres used for each purpose, and the option of buying new farm
equipment ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). The types of farming used in the bay game are conventional
high yield, best management practices (BMP), advanced BMP, and sustainable ("UVA Bay Game",
2016). These farming practices range from very poor for the Bay's health to the most beneficial.
Conventional high yield farming produces the largest volume of crops, however uses pesticides and
fertilizer that are detrimental to the Bay's health ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). Sustainable farming is
the most beneficial for the Bay as it puts a diverse population of plants together in order to reduce
runoff, however it is more costly and has a lesser crop yield than the other farming practices ("UVA
Bay Game", 2016). The crop farmer also has an option to choose how many acres will be used for
planting, fallow land (land reserved for the next year to maintain nutrients), and cover crops that
will be used as a more natural and environmentally sound option compared to other fertilizers
("UVA Bay Game", 2016). From the role of a crop farmer, my goal twice a week was to maximize
my revenue while being mindful of the environmental impacts I was creating. Other than the first

Eastern Oyster History: The Chesapeake Bay

scholarly dispute, likely means "Great Bay of Shells" or "Great Shellfish Bay" in the language of the
Algonquian Native Americans ("Oyster History"). This translation is appropriate and accurate to
anyone familiar with the Chesapeake Bay and its rich history of oysters. The Chesapeake Bay is the
largest estuary in the United States with over 150 rivers and streams flow into its basin. It measures
roughly 200 miles in length, 3.4 to 35 miles in width and stretches across six states. The bay is home
to over 2,700 plant and animal species, making it one of the most complex and productive estuary
systems in the world ("Facts and Figures"). However, one species ... Show more content on

As temperatures continued to increase and diverse forms of aquatic and land wildlife began to
inhabit the area, the Paleo–Indians shifted their methods of food procurement, accordingly. About
5,000 years ago, a multitude of fish and shellfish populate the region's rivers abundantly while
forests previously dominated by conifers abate for deciduous ones that supply acorns and various
nuts; both developments provided integral food sources for the Indian population. It is also around
this time when oysters first begin to colonize the Bay ("Bay History"). By the 16th century, the
Chesapeake Bay had formed its present outline and its waters had become replete with clams, fish
such as bass and shad, and oysters. The Native American population reached 24,000 as they moved

The Chesapeake Bay if filled with many different species of plants and animals that benefit the

within the chesapeake bay and share some sort of relationship both directly and indirectly. Not one
of these organisms could live without the other. Due to many different pollutants in the area, these
organisms are at great risk. The organisms listed above are all related through a food chain. The
partial food chain shown begins with the algae. Algae are producers that make their own food

Sewage treatment plants, air pollution, animal feed lots, and polluted runoff from cropland are four
major sources to this issue. All of these forms of pollution create an overabundance of nitrogen and
phosphorous in the water. According to The Chesapeake Bay Foundation,"The largest source of
pollution to the Bay comes from agricultural runoff, which contributes roughly 40 percent of the
nitrogen and 50 percent of the phosphorus entering the Chesapeake Bay." Although nitrogen and
phosphorous are beneficial in moderation for the organisms living in the Chesapeake Bay, they
cause a notable amount of damage in excess. Excessive amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous cause
algal blooms. There are many different types of algae, some are good for the ecosystem, and some
are dangerous and can cause "dead zones" where aquatic life no longer flourishes. Too much or too

One of the world's oldest rivers and also one of America's most polluted, the Susquehanna River is
facing an escalating environmental threat. The 464 mile long river runs through four states,

over 6 million people. Pennsylvania contains much of the country's most fertile farm lands and
holds 21,000 of the 27,000 square miles of the river's watershed area. The agriculture industry is the

Phosphorus and nitrogen fuel algae blooms which consume vast amounts of oxygen in the water
that lead to dead zones in the slow moving river, a process known as eutrophication. While these
pollutants were on the decline in the 1980s, population growth in the area spurred an increase in
agricultural practices that has since reversed the numbers. The developmental upsurge has greatly
diminished the natural field and forest buffers and filters and replaced them with impenetrable
concrete roads and surfaces that hasten the transport of pollutants to waterways. The aging
infrastructure of decades old towns struggle to maintain the growing stresses being put on the
sewage and pipeline systems by the expanses in population. Diminishing health conditions of the

Case Study: The Chesapeake Bay Watershed
The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is considered of national high importance due to its 64,000 square
miles and 17.4 million people inhabitants. However, this has not been sufficient to improve the
health of the ecosystem over the last 25 years. The primary reasons for this lack of improvement are
the lack of knowledge and information of the people living on the watershed, the multistate
composition of the watershed and the broad range of activities that the watershed supports.
The bay has a history of eutrophication due in part on its water circulation pattern and vertical
stratification, but also due to the enhanced loads of nitrogen and phosphorous flowing into the
Chesapeake Bay originated by agricultural activities. With the problems of the Chesapeake Bay in
mind, the Chesapeake Bay Program Agreement was signed in 1983 and in the implementation of the
consequent management program. This program has been an attempt to improve the health of the
Bay. However, due to the delay in the implementation and the increase in population, the results are
not as significant as they should be, as it can be seen in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation report that

Slavery In Colonial America
By the 1630s, about 1.5 million pounds of tobacco was hauled out of Chesapeake Bay (and almost
40 million towards the 1700s). The Chespeake was hospitable for tobacco cultivation and it blew up
the tobacco economy. Sir William Berkeley became governor of Virginia in 1642. He didn't like that
most of his people were poor, unhappy, and armed, but he didn't help them out of that either.
However, he did have friendly policies towards the Indians to monopolize the fur trade. In Virginia
(1600s–1650s), there was a very short lifespan due to diseases. Many people didn't live to their 40th
birthday, or even their 20th. This made the men compete for the women that they outnumbered and
become one of the few families that existed there.
To have enough cheap labor and maintain the tobacco economy, there were "indentured servants."
There were about 100,000 of them by 1700. The servants exchanged working for transatlantic
passage and freedom dues (food, clothes, and land). The "headright" system was also employed to
encourage importing servant workers. Nathaniel Bacon (a 29 year old planter) gathered about a

Biodiversity Is The Whole Collection Of Living Organisms
Every ecosystem on earth relies on the complex relationships made between individual species
which have evolved over millions of years. In this jigsaw framework, the loss of any one individual
species has a significant impact on the remaining species and the ecosystem, thereby affecting its
biodiversity. Per Merriam–Webster's Dictionary, biodiversity is the whole collection of living
organisms, consisting of different species of plants and animals, that cohabitate in an ecosystem.
This term collectively describes approximately all 8.7 million unique species, including every class
of bacteria, virus, plant, fungi, and animal, that coexist on earth. As such, biodiversity and the
conservation of biodiversity is extremely important to the human population and the health of all
ecosystems. For instance, biodiversity provides food and materials needed to strengthen our
economy. The selling of various plants and animals for consumption, entertainment/ recreation, and
building purposes keeps countless restaurants and supermarkets in business today. Also, through the
study of a vast array of plants and herbs, scientists have discovered cures to disease and have
lengthened the average human lifespan. By doing so, society has increased its research efforts in
medical herbs and in studying genomic sequences of various endangered species in hopes to
uncover new treatments and even piece together mysteries of the past, for instance, using molasses

The goal of this program was to reduce the level of nitrogen and phosphorous flowing to the Bay by
40% by the year 2000, from their 1985 levels (Blankenship 2). The first step in this program was to
reduce the amount of nutrient pollution from point sources (end–of–the–pipe) such as wastewater
treatment facilities that feed into the many tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay (The Chesapeake Bay
Watershed 1). However, the results of these cleanup efforts were not enough to reach the goal of the
program. Therefore, the areas involved now had to target the non–point sources of nitrogen and
phosphorous. The non–point sources are storm water run off from agricultural and developed sites,
air pollution, and the development of sensitive forests that act as buffers for tributaries and the Bay
(1). The Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act of 1989 took aim at these sources in Tidewater Virginia

where everything is. This insures you don't have to search for anything in case of an emergency. A
buddy check is done before every dive and is a step that should not be overlooked. It is an essential
part of getting ready for a dive. If it is not done properly it could lead to unwanted hassles and in
extreme cases it could lead to injury or death. This often happens when you are not familiar with

The Chesapeake Bay
Scene in Fig. 1.1., the Chesapeake Bay is substantial in size; at roughly 64,000 miles, it contains
roughly fifty rivers and thousands of streams and creeks. It encompasses parts of 6 states, including
all of Washington, DC. The Chesapeake Bay is what is known as a watershed, an area that
contributes to the drainage to a water body, stream, river, lake or ocean. Rainwater that falls within
the 64,000 square miles that is the Chesapeake Bay will subsequently travel through many streams
and rivers, eventually making its way into the largest estuary system in the United States.
The Estuary System
An estuary system is "the resulting collisions of sweet and salt–fresh river water flowing seaward
and ocean water inland." It is an aquatic system where salt and freshwater are constantly mixing. An
estuary system is one of most active systems of the planet; it is a hybrid system that contains the
best and worst qualities of the ocean, river, and lake systems it conglomerates. Estuaries are unique
in nature because of their ability to be the most productive ecosystem on the entire planet; humans
have attempted and failed to reach the productivity that estuaries naturally grant. There productivity
lies it the constant change that occurs from the conflicting flows of fresh and ocean water. Ocean
and freshwater are measured largely based on salinity, or the level of parts of salt per thousand.
Ocean water usually has around 35 parts per thousands of salt water, while freshwater

pristine body of water, slowly swaying back and forth. In the distance, you can see trees border the
other shoreline and a small island placed haphazardly in the center of the water. Looking up, the sky

Where is it coming from, and why is it here? What happened to the geese and the water? Above all,
is this degree of change possible? The scary truth is that it is. In fact, if you remove a particular
species from the waters of the bay, it can cause the entire coastal ecosystem to essentially collapse.
What type of animal could possible have such a significant impact on the environment? Oysters.
THE LIFE OF A KEYSTONE SPECIES
The oyster is arguably one of the most unappreciated animals in the Animal Kingdom. It is neither
fuzzy nor warm. It does not even have a face! Yet somehow, this unlikeable creature is one of the
most important in its ecosystem. In fact, oysters are considered a keystone species, meaning the size
of its population has a disproportionally large effect on the health of its ecosystem.
What exactly makes oysters so important? For one thing, oysters are filter feeders. They remove
organic and inorganic particles in the water that could be potentially harmful for other organisms. In
fact, adult oysters can filter up to 50 gallons of water each day (Chesapeake Bay Foundation). By
removing microscopic algae and other suspended solids and releasing it back into the water in
"bundles," other organisms are able to utilize the pseudo–feces for nutrients. Not only do oysters
increase the clarity of the water, but they also provide a sanctuary for other bay organisms. Oysters

Chesapeak Bay and Jamestown
It is evident that every culture is affected by the environment in which said culture evolves. Whether
these effects can be observed in the gods differing societies worship, or by the way in which
resources are accumulated, the reasons are all the same. How each society and culture interacts with
its environment dictates its development and growth. There is no more evident an example of this
than the Chesapeake Bay area, pre, mid, and post colonization, using the colony of Jamestown as an
model for contact interactions between two distinct cultures, and how these relations can be dictated
by the environment. In the period termed pre–contact the indigenous peoples living in the
Chesapeake Bay region were known collectively as the Powhatan people. This name was used for
the collective of the Algonquian speaking tribes in the Chesapeake Bay and, during the time of
interest, was led by Chief Powhatan, who took his tribe name as his ruling name. Chief Powhatan
inherited the rule of six tribes when he became chief, as well as having accumulated a multitude of
tribes during his reign to create the Powhatan confederacy. Within this confederacy, each distinct
tribe was responsible for providing military support when requested, as well as were required to
provide taxes in the form of pelts, food, copper and pearls. Notably, at no point was gold objectively
mined by the Powhatan people. These people left no written records and thus the information

Pollution in Chesapeake Bay Essay
Chesapeake Bay
Television commercials, print ads, and billboards in the Washington, DC, area are asking residents
to connect two things many might find unrelated: lawn care and seafood. In one commercial, a man
stuffs a big plateful of grass in his mouth after a voice–over says, "Spring rains carry excess lawn
fertilizers through our sewers and rivers and into the Chesapeake Bay, where the blue crab harvest
has been extremely low. So skip the fertilizer until fall, because once they're gone, what's left to

When work began to improve the Chesapeake Bay they needed to find the culprits of the bad water
quality then get rid of them.
Scientists and researchers began giving a large volume of effort and look into the extremely
complex problems that face the Chesapeake Bay. When research for the improving and saving of the
Bay's overall health began it seemed very simple and there were only a couple of problems. The
problems included nutrients from agricultural runoff; these nutrients were phosphorus and nitrogen.
The combination of the nutrients in the Bay caused a large volume of algae that choked some of the
marine life. While bringing in algae the nutrients also killed grasses on the seafloor. These seafloor
bed grasses that once covered more than half of the Chesapeake Bay's floor now only covered a
tenth of their original area. Though the estuary was having problems it did not receive the terrible
pollution from industries that many large rivers and lakes do in other urban areas (Brown, p. 397).
Needless to say, it does not mean that the Bay was out of trouble by only having to deal with the
problems of the nutrients runoff. The nitrogen and phosphorus is more than enough to handle the
Chesapeake Bay. By the year 1987the Chesapeake Bay was taking in 184,000 metric tons of
nitrogen 74,000 metric tons of phosphorus a year from such variable as animal and human wastes
and agricultural fertilizers. More

Stop Poisoning Our Water
The PBS documentary, Poison Waters, is a documentary on the disastrous state of America's major
water bodies that continue to be polluted by state governments and companies. The video is a source
used to educate the general public on the dangers of pollution and the disastrous effects pollution
will have on the environment. The video exposes a multitude of people and institutions that
purposely turn a blind eye to what is going on in the environment. The main reason the state of the
environment is still subpar is due of the lack of interest of the people about what's going on. Due to
the lack of interest there are many preventable problems that exist that are contributing to the
depletion of our safe and healthy environment.
Six decades ago, various sea creatures such as oysters, crabs and fishes were in abundance in the
Chesapeake Bay, however today fishermen are struggling to bring in a bountiful harvest due to the
level of pollution. The east coast heavily depends on the food able to be harvested from the
Chesapeake Bay. Travel is also a major reason people embark upon the Bay with its easy access to
various locations. Humans have over crabbed and overfished the bay seizing chances for the species
to replenish themselves. Another problem is the aptly titled dead zones in the bay which is due to
excess algae. The excess algae sucks up oxygen when it dies killing all the life at the bottom of the
bay. Due to the ongoing problem affecting the health of the bay and its

Oyster History: The Chesapeake Bay
The word Chesapeake, although there is some scholarly dispute, likely means "Great Bay of Shells"
or "Great Shellfish Bay" in the language of the Algonquian Native Americans ("Oyster History").
This translation is appropriate and accurate to anyone familiar with the Chesapeake Bay and its rich
history of oysters. The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States with over 150
rivers and streams flow into its basin. It measures roughly 200 miles in length, 3.4 to 35 miles in
width and stretches across six states. The bay is home to over 2,700 plant and animal species,
making it one of the most complex and productive estuary systems in the world ("Facts and
Figures"). However, one species of animal stands out above the rest in its value and legacy to the
Chesapeake region: the eastern oyster. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Today's eastern oysters range from 3 to 5 inches in length, sometimes as much as 8 inches, although
the oysters present during the colonization of the New World were documented to grow much larger
("Oyster History"). Oysters have many great characteristics in regard to their utility for humans as
well as wildlife. The build ups of oyster bars, reefs, and beds provide habitat for many aquatic
lifeforms and the filtration capabilities they possess is quite remarkable; as filter feeders, oysters
feed on phytoplankton and small organisms while removing nutrients from the waters the inhabit,
leaving them clear and pristine; just one oyster can filter more than 50 gallons in a day ("Oyster
History"). Alas, it was a palatable constitution that made the eastern oyster so popular, creating an
extensive economy based on its harvest. Unfortunately, this considerable popularity would

Cleveland Bay Analysis
Cleveland Bay is a shallow bay adjacent to Townsville, north Queensland. The Bay is in the dry
tropics and experiences a wet summer season (December – April) and winter dry season (May –
November). During the wet season (with an average annual rainfall of 1120 mm), a high flow of
water and sediment are deposited into the Bay. The decreasing salinity, and increasing turbidity
creates an anoxic environment for inshore species (Petus et al. 2014). Regular deposition of fresh
water and sediments are sourced from the three rivers and three creeks; the Black, Bohle and Ross
river, and Sand–fly, Alligator and Crocodile creeks. To the northeast of the Bay is the Coral Sea, on
its northwest lies Magnetic Island, and the southeast coastline lined with

The New World
After settlement of "The New World" by the English in the early 17th century, there was a surge of
Englishmen hoping to strike rich, escape the religious government of England, or start a new life
with their family. Specific reasons for leaving England had its respective colonies to travel to. For
this reason, the northern New England colonies and the southern colonies like Virginia and
Maryland in the Chesapeake bay area started to establish ways of life that began to develop very
different lifestyles. The reasoning behind the foundation of each colony is what created such a
substantial amount of difference between two areas of English settlement.
Following the defeat of the Spanish armada, England finally had the power to venture out to the
Americas after hearing about a century's worth of Spanish success in that region themselves. Single
Englishmen in search of wealth began to sail to America, and did not find the gold they were
searching for. It was not until the success from the crop tobacco, did anyone in Virginia prosper.
This set the stage for a huge colony with an economy relying on large plantations of this new staple
crop. The many who sought out the Massachusetts bay colony in New England were likely not
going to strike rich on a plantation, but to either escape the English Church, or to start a new life for
their family. The Massachusetts bay colony was founded by Puritans who wanted to fix, or purify,
the English church and for this reason, were also very

An issue that was present in few specific cities in Maryland have now expanded throughout the

vital to important habitats and food webs in this area. The Chesapeake bay is arguably one of the
most productive environments in the United States. Over the years, this bay has been in a decline of
wellness. Pollution, contaminants, and many other factors are destroying the overall well being of
these waters, and completely messing up the important ecosystem that has been built there.

Farms, and cities are the most responsible for the pollution affecting the bay. And with no surprise,
farmers, home builders, and chemical companies fight against the restoration idea every day.
According to Moyers & Company, ¨The top three spenders – the American Farm Bureau, Fertilizer
Institute and the National Association of Home Builders – gave over $4 million to national–level
politicians and spent over $18.5 million on lobbying¨. Even the President of the place we live in,
Donald Trump, proposed a budget that would completely eliminate the federal funding for the
cleanup of the bay. Okay, so, let me get this straight, you don't want clean water? Or care about the
thousands of life forms currently residing in the Chesapeake? Without this funding, the restoration
process would come to an end, and the restoration could not be possible. Put your money where
your mouth is! (Drinking clean water and possibly eating fish, or other seafood). I hope that I
highlighted how critical the Chesapeake Bay is today, and I hope that you agree with me. The
Chesapeake Bay is considerably one of the largest resources here in Maryland that benefits not only
our beautiful world of wildlife, but our education, economy, and health. Without the Chesapeake,
millions of jobs would be lost, millions of gallons of drinking water, and millions of species could

However, the plan called for a $66 million dollar cut in capital funding for environmental program

Chesapeake Bay and agriculture industry because this negates the possibility of continuing the talks
on the issue of the phosphorous pollution regulation. This imposed heated issues with reports of
millions of dollars at stake for Shore farmers and billions for industries located by the bay. This

But, the bay is starting to get polluted and many organisms in the bay are dying because of

sediments. Sediments forms when rocks and soil erode or weather. About 5.2 million tons of
sediment enter the bay every year. When it rains, those sediments are carried to the bay by runoff.
Because of the small size, the particles float on the surface of water and often travel long distances

Smart planning and using green technologies can reduce the impact that urbanization and growing
populations puts on the Bay. Pervious paving surfaces reduce the amount of runoff going into the
Bay. There are many benefits to using pervious concrete, "these benefits are achieved with the use
of an innovative design. Pervious pavement, also referred to as porous or permeable pavement, is
actually a system consisting of an open–graded surface layer of concrete, asphalt, or pavers,
typically placed over an open–graded aggregate base layer. The pavement structure has a large
percentage of void spaces allowing water to permeate through the surface and base at a rate
comparable to that of a grass lawn" (Broviak). Strict stormwater control measures have recently
been passed in states surrounding the Chesapeake's watershed, including Maryland, and many
require a certain amount of green space or use of green technologies in construction. In addition to
the growing use of pervious pavement techniques, other types of stormwater management
techniques are gaining popularity. In a thesis paper from University of Maryland, Wilson discusses
alternative ways to engineer for the Bay; "By using technologies such as cisterns, green roofs, and
constructed wetlands, the built environment can be designed to decrease our need for expensive
water purifying infrastructure and preserve the health of fragile estuary ecosystems such as the
Chesapeake Bay." Rain gardens are a viable alternative to storm drains to deal with runoff from
impervious areas. A rain garden captures water that would usually run into a storm drain and
eventually be discharged into a river and allows it to infiltrate into the ground and for
evapotranspiration to occur. In a study done to evaluate how effective rain gardens are at capturing
and reducing runoff results were

My Personal Advice For The Chesapeake
Dear uncle, life is extremely harsh over here. I am aware that you are considering migrating to the
Chesapeake Colony because of the fantasy you saw on the newspaper. My personal advice for you

one time. Your expectation is just an imagination. You may be attracted by the geographic
advantages and the resources in the Chesapeake. You may be interested in the Chesapeake because
of the protection, environment, and the access of resources. Although the Chesapeake Bay provides
numerous benefits, our population has never been stabilized. Every year our population decreases
constantly. With certainty, your mind must been filled with full of questions. I will give you a good
explanation of why Chesapeake is not an option for you and you love ones. There are countless
reasons that should erase your thought of moving here but the main concern is the death rate.
Without a doubt, I will provide you an elaborated explanation about the Chesapeake's historical
background and why the Chesapeake region is not a suitable place to colonize due to its extreme
mortality rate. Presently, I have been in the Chesapeake Bay colony for about six months and I am
blessed that I am still breathing and writing this letter to you. As a business man, I was attracted by
its transportation advantage due to its numerous river systems surrounding the colony. It contributes

Eutrophication in te Chesapeake Bay Essay
Introduction
What is your topic/issue within that topic?
Eutrophication is a concern in the Chesapeake Bay. Eutrophication is caused by excessive amounts
of nutrients. Excessive nutrients in the bay have negative effects on the bay's ecosystem. The extra
nutrients make the environment unbalanced. The extra nutrients cause a chain reaction that
eventually kills most of the organisms in that area. This is what is known as a dead zone.
What is your personal interest in the topic?
This topic is interesting to me because it is a very local issue. I eat the seafood out of the
Chesapeake, I fish in many of its tributaries, and I visit many sights built around this watershed. I
live in Lancaster County which is focused on in many studies because ... Show more content on

It is understood that there is not just one problem causing the dead zone in the bay. Two main
contributors are the focus. Details are presented on the problems brought to the bay by agriculture,
and development. The language is easy to understand and the scientific and environmental message
is conveyed in a way that can be followed.
Summary of source The importance of the Chesapeake Bay is introduced. The bay is home to a
large amount of seafood businesses, and many people fish the bay and its tributaries for sport. Grass
beds are essential to many of the organisms living in this ecosystem, but are being destroyed by
pollution. Agriculture involves more than a fourth of the bay's watershed. This makes agricultural
runoff a big focus. Excessive nitrogen and phosphorus causes eutrophication. These nutrients come
from pesticides and sewage also. A goal was set in 1985 to cut back the percent of nutrients being
put into the bay by these two sources. It is thought that redirecting the flow of soil with nutrients in
them will reduce the runoff, but if the nutrients seep into groundwater they still get into the
Chesapeake Bay. Farmers have ways to help reduce these nutrient levels, but it is not the cheapest
way to farm, so not all farmers are doing their part to save the bay. Another contributor of runoff
land development. Runoff can occur from exposed land being prepared to be developed, or because
of what has been used to replace what used to naturally be.

Water Pollution In The Movie : Poisoned Water
Poisoned Waters, the movie, touches upon many important things that are brought up when there is
water pollution. In the movie, at the beginning, it shows how often many people are affected by the
pollution. Many people lose their jobs due to the pollution not allowing them to fish for the amount
of fish, oysters, or crabs that were available a mere 10 years ago. Billions of dollars are easily lost
due to this decrease in production within the industry. The bay that was shown during the movie,
Chesapeake Bay, is one of the largest estuaries in the United States. This bay is very susceptible to
becoming a dead zone due to all the nitrogen and phosphorus is being brought into the bay from
farming. A dead zone does not allow or oxygen to be produced due to all the algae that are present,
and once an animal is in a trapped within a dead zone, it is only a matter of time. But this isn't just a
problem here in the United States, this is a problem that is happening all over the world. This issue
presented further affects the economy on a local scale but on a global scale.
Apart from the Chesapeake Bay not being a source for as much food as it was previously, the
estuary is also not as grandiose as it used to be. This brings down tourism which will affect the
amount of money that is being brought into the surrounding cities. And all of the resources it
provides as a place for people to swim, to catch food, to enjoy, etc., could be lost if we don't do

  • 2. Chesapeake Bay Persuasive Essay With a decrease in algae population, the grasses of the bay will be fed on by zooplankton, oysters, and fish. Without the algae, there would be a huge decrease in Bay grasses. This happens because Zooplankton, oysters, and fish will no longer eat the algae, they would resort to the Bay grasses. The effects then go onto the plants and animals living here. (Science Daily) Since the algae population decreases, so does the algae bloom, which sink to the bottom and decompose to create oxygen many underwater animals need. Some blooms also produce toxins, which can harm or kill the fish, harm animals that drink the water, and cause problems for humans as well. With a decrease in algae blooms, plants and animals would no longer have a steady population. They would end up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Citizens are also asked to keep a watchful eye out for possible HABs are urged to report suspected HABs to their respective state environmental agency. (Chesapeake Bay Programs) (Article 1) Lastly, I will explain the dead zone of the chesapeake Bay. Excessive Nitrogen and Phosphrous pollution from human activities cause "Dead Zones" , which are areas with low amounts of oxygen. With little or no oxygen, fish, crabs, oysters, and other aquatic animals literally suffocate. Further excess in nutrients also fuels the growth of dense algae blooms that block sunlight that underwater grasses need to grow in order to continue providing food for waterfowl and shelter for blue crabs and juvenile fish. (Chesapeake Bay Foundation) (Dead Zones) When there are excessive loads of Nitrogen and Phosphorous in the water, Alage can "bloom" to harmful levels, changing water color, and eventually stripping dissolved oxygen from the water when they die, fall to the bottom, and decay. This dissolved oxygen is critical to the health of the Chesapeake Bay's critters and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Chesapeake Bay Ecosystem Research Paper Chapter II: Conservation of Specific Functions, Habitats, Features and Species Many habitats in the Chesapeake Bay watershed are degrading by time and losing their functionality. Because it sounds as "Utopia" to conserve and protect all the habitats in such a complex ecosystem, the most important habitats shall be targeted. These specific habitats are the wetlands, riparian forest and streams. Each of these habitats represents one of the essential landscape ecology principles. Wetlands act as buffer zone and provide critical habitat to some species in the Bay. It is important to sustain the Estuarine Emergent Wetlands in order to provide a place for breeding, nursery and reproduction. The riparian forest buffer represents the patch edge which normally functions as a filter that reduces the surrounding influence on the interior patch, the Bay and wetlands (Dramstad, Olson and Forman, 1996:29). The forests filter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Besides, the streams or river systems act as corridors. A continuous stream corridor is necessary to maintain landscape connectivity and aquatic conditions including cool water temperature and high oxygen content (Dramstad, Olson and Forman, 1996:40). The above mentioned habitats are crucial because it support priority species in the Bay. Although more than 3,600 different species of plants and animals live in the tidal waters of the Bay, there are priority species that shall be protected. The most important keystone species are the Blue Crab, the Oysters, the Bald Eagle and the Black Duck. Keystone species are valuable components at the community scale because they maintain biodiversity and influence critical ecological process (Peck, 1998:34). Blue crabs not only ... • 4. The Is The Only Activity That Benefits The Bay "Shellfish is the only activity that benefits the bay,"(Sam Houghton, 2015) said Mr.Cook one of the Popponesset Bay three leading oyster farmers. In 2004 the town of Mashpee began restoring oyster aquaculture as a way to remove nitrogen from Popponesset Bay (Sam Houghton, 2015). The towns oyster aquaculture program has grown to 2,000,000 oysters annually (Sam Houghton, 2015). The town of Mashpee installed their first oyster beds in 2004 and were soon followed by the Wampanoags and Richard Cook. The Wampanoags installed their first oyster beds in 2009 (K Clark, 2014). Richard Cook has been shellfishing since 1984 in Popponesset Bay. In 2015 new oyster beds created by the town of Mashpee were put in in Shoestring bay, a part of Popponesset Bay. The purpose of this experiment is to test the water quality, focusing on nitrogen levels around oyster beds of varying ages in Popponesset Bay. The map below shows the three beds where water quality will be tested. The one in Figure 1 represents the town of Mashpee's one year old bed. The 2 in Figure 1 represents the Wampanoag oyster beds which are 6 years old. The 3 in Figure 1 is the oldest bed in Popponesset Bay, the town's 11 years old beds. Figure 1. Popponesset Bay, Cape Cod, MA Looking at the effectiveness of oyster beds is important because bodies of water can die if there is too much nitrogen. • 5. The New England And Chesapeake In the 1600s, America began colonization. Each colony had a specific goal or aspiration that it planned to achieve. These colonies were separated into different regions among America. Two specific regions that many historians tend to articulate about. Consisting of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, the New England region presents many intriguing ways of achieving their goals. Likewise, the Chesapeake Bay, which contain Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and part of South Carolina, also have their own ways of achieving different goals. While many focus on the differences of each region, others focus on the similarities that each of the regions possess. Using common knowledge and the historical documents that have been stumbled on over the past number of years, the reader will be able to understand the differences and similarities between the New England and Chesapeake regions as well as determine whether the differences or similarities benefit the colonies. Of the two regions, the New England colonies represent a civil and denominated society. The founders portray those who seek to escape religious victimization that Britain brought down on them. The colonies are obvious companions of God as document 2–2 says, "For the persons, wee are a company professing our selves fellow members of Christ." The law of New England strictly bases itself on God's law. Its political structure consists of the lower level and the colonial level governments. At the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Then I remembered, I 'm at the Naval Academy, Bancroft hall to be more specific. "Another day, Another dollar", I reluctantly said for the seventh and final time. My bunkmate heard my alarm and woke with a similar reaction. "You know what today is right?", he said to me in an uneasy voice. "Yeah, today 's wet and sandy, the so called worst day of your life. Or so I 'm told.", I replied. "You know there 's a reason they have wet and sandy for the final day", my bunkmate said. Every ten feet or so I would look ahead and mark a tree in the distance and say to myself "just get to that tree, if you get to that tree then everything will be alright" My method of pushing forward got me to the hospital point beach, While I was completely exhausted, my squad members were fine because they got to run on two feet, I had to run on four. The workout, appropriately titled "Wet and Sandy" was set to begin. "Okay, now that everybody is here run into the Chesapeake Bay and cover yourself with as much sand as possible. Then come back to hospital point, you have 30 seconds. Go". The entire squad bolted for the sea and began to cover themselves with sand. As quickly as possible we threw sand all over our bodies, fully clothed mind you, and ran back to hospital point. "33 seconds" the two seals stated with a smile on their faces. "You didn 't make the time, so know your gonna do the exact same thing until we say stop," they said. The Chesapeake Bay had an unhealthy environment, bad eating diets, and intolerable labor. The colonists had different reasons for settling in these two distinct regions. The New England region was a more religiously strict yet diverse area compared to that of the Chesapeake Bay. The development of religion in the two regions came from separate roots. After Henry VIII and the Roman Catholic Church broke away from each other, a new group of English reformers was created called the Puritans. The Puritans came from protestant backgrounds, after being influenced by Calvinistic ideas. When their reforms were thwarted by King James I of England, they fled to the New World in what is now known as the "Great Migration". The Puritans were then joined by Quakers, Protestants, and Catholics in the religiously diverse New England area. These diverse religious factions were allowed to live freely but under the laws of New England. It was due to this religious freedom that these people came to escape religious persecution back home. The New Englanders had a religion–based society and religion was based on family. As the Bible highly regarded family, it condemned adultery. Adultery was considered a punishable crime. Chesapeake Life History Between 1813 and 1962, steamboats ruled the Chesapeake Bay, reflected in a fascinating and important era, in which trade and travel were made more convenient with steamers that linked parts of Maryland and Virginia, with distant and isolated rural communities along the Eastern Shore, in particular, including Piankatank River and Occohannock Creek in Virginia, Hudson Creek off the Little Choptank River in Maryland, Bushwood, and Rock Point It made possible access to certain goods and services typically unavailable east of the Bay, along with opportunities for leisure and entertainment. There were various types of steamboats on the Chesapeake Bay, all serving a specific function. The packet steamboats were the most common, were medium–sized and fast, and transported passengers, freight and domestic mail. • 10. A Brief Note On The Chesapeake Bay Game In the UVA Chesapeake Bay Game, I was assigned the role of a Crop Farmer number for the the Potomac River watershed. In the Bay game, the crop farmer controls several things, including the type of farming used, the number of acres used for each purpose, and the option of buying new farm equipment ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). The types of farming used in the bay game are conventional high yield, best management practices (BMP), advanced BMP, and sustainable ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). These farming practices range from very poor for the Bay's health to the most beneficial. Conventional high yield farming produces the largest volume of crops, however uses pesticides and fertilizer that are detrimental to the Bay's health ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). Sustainable farming is the most beneficial for the Bay as it puts a diverse population of plants together in order to reduce runoff, however it is more costly and has a lesser crop yield than the other farming practices ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). The crop farmer also has an option to choose how many acres will be used for planting, fallow land (land reserved for the next year to maintain nutrients), and cover crops that will be used as a more natural and environmentally sound option compared to other fertilizers ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). This translation is appropriate and accurate to anyone familiar with the Chesapeake Bay and its rich history of oysters. The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States with over 150 rivers and streams flow into its basin. It measures roughly 200 miles in length, 3.4 to 35 miles in width and stretches across six states. The bay is home to over 2,700 plant and animal species, making it one of the most complex and productive estuary systems in the world ("Facts and Figures"). However, one species ... It is also around this time when oysters first begin to colonize the Bay ("Bay History"). By the 16th century, the Chesapeake Bay had formed its present outline and its waters had become replete with clams, fish such as bass and shad, and oysters. The Native American population reached 24,000 as they moved from a hunter/gatherer lifestyle to one based on agricultural reliance of crops like corn, squash, beans, and tobacco. • 12. Chesapeake Bay Essay The Chesapeake Bay if filled with many different species of plants and animals that benefit the ecosystem. Bay grasses and algae, zooplankton, oysters, and fish are all living amongst one another within the chesapeake bay and share some sort of relationship both directly and indirectly. Not one of these organisms could live without the other. Due to many different pollutants in the area, these organisms are at great risk. The organisms listed above are all related through a food chain. The partial food chain shown begins with the algae. Algae are producers that make their own food through the process of photosynthesis. Through photosynthesis they absorb nutrients within the water, which can then be consumed by other aquatic life like zooplankton. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sewage treatment plants, air pollution, animal feed lots, and polluted runoff from cropland are four major sources to this issue. All of these forms of pollution create an overabundance of nitrogen and phosphorous in the water. Although nitrogen and phosphorous are beneficial in moderation for the organisms living in the Chesapeake Bay, they cause a notable amount of damage in excess. Excessive amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous cause algal blooms. Phosphorus and nitrogen fuel algae blooms which consume vast amounts of oxygen in the water that lead to dead zones in the slow moving river, a process known as eutrophication. While these pollutants were on the decline in the 1980s, population growth in the area spurred an increase in agricultural practices that has since reversed the numbers. The developmental upsurge has greatly diminished the natural field and forest buffers and filters and replaced them with impenetrable concrete roads and surfaces that hasten the transport of pollutants to waterways. The aging infrastructure of decades old towns struggle to maintain the growing stresses being put on the sewage and pipeline systems by the expanses in population. Diminishing health conditions of the small mouth bass and catfish in the Susquehanna River has sparked a great deal of controversy among the citizens of Pennsylvania. In December 2014 The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission released a limit advisory for catfish consumption from the river; residents were encouraged not to consume more than one catfish per month due to the fatty fish's ability to retain toxins for long periods of time. • 17. Case Study: The Chesapeake Bay Watershed The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is considered of national high importance due to its 64,000 square miles and 17.4 million people inhabitants. However, this has not been sufficient to improve the health of the ecosystem over the last 25 years. The primary reasons for this lack of improvement are the lack of knowledge and information of the people living on the watershed, the multistate composition of the watershed and the broad range of activities that the watershed supports. The bay has a history of eutrophication due in part on its water circulation pattern and vertical stratification, but also due to the enhanced loads of nitrogen and phosphorous flowing into the Chesapeake Bay originated by agricultural activities. With the problems of the Chesapeake Bay in mind, the Chesapeake Bay Program Agreement was signed in 1983 and in the implementation of the consequent management program. This program has been an attempt to improve the health of the Bay. • 18. Slavery In Colonial America By the 1630s, about 1.5 million pounds of tobacco was hauled out of Chesapeake Bay (and almost 40 million towards the 1700s). The Chespeake was hospitable for tobacco cultivation and it blew up the tobacco economy. Sir William Berkeley became governor of Virginia in 1642. He didn't like that most of his people were poor, unhappy, and armed, but he didn't help them out of that either. However, he did have friendly policies towards the Indians to monopolize the fur trade. In Virginia (1600s–1650s), there was a very short lifespan due to diseases. Many people didn't live to their 40th birthday, or even their 20th. This made the men compete for the women that they outnumbered and become one of the few families that existed there. To have enough cheap labor and maintain the tobacco economy, there were "indentured servants." There were about 100,000 of them by 1700. The servants exchanged working for transatlantic passage and freedom dues (food, clothes, and land). The "headright" system was also employed to encourage importing servant workers. • 19. Biodiversity Is The Whole Collection Of Living Organisms Every ecosystem on earth relies on the complex relationships made between individual species which have evolved over millions of years. In this jigsaw framework, the loss of any one individual species has a significant impact on the remaining species and the ecosystem, thereby affecting its biodiversity. Per Merriam–Webster's Dictionary, biodiversity is the whole collection of living organisms, consisting of different species of plants and animals, that cohabitate in an ecosystem. This term collectively describes approximately all 8.7 million unique species, including every class of bacteria, virus, plant, fungi, and animal, that coexist on earth. As such, biodiversity and the conservation of biodiversity is extremely important to the human population and the health of all ecosystems. For instance, biodiversity provides food and materials needed to strengthen our economy. The selling of various plants and animals for consumption, entertainment/ recreation, and building purposes keeps countless restaurants and supermarkets in business today. Also, through the study of a vast array of plants and herbs, scientists have discovered cures to disease and have lengthened the average human lifespan. By doing so, society has increased its research efforts in medical herbs and in studying genomic sequences of various endangered species in hopes to uncover new treatments and even piece together mysteries of the past, for instance, using molasses encased mosquitos to examine the spread ... The Chesapeake Bay is the nation's largest estuary with six major tributaries, the James, the Potomac, the Susquehanna, the Patuxent, the York, and the Rappahannock Rivers, feeding into the bay from various locations in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia (Chemical Contaminants in the Chesapeake Bay – Workshop Discussion 1). These areas depend on the Bay as both an environmental and an economic resource. Throughout the last 15 years the Chesapeake Bay has suffered from elevated levels of pollution. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The goal of this program was to reduce the level of nitrogen and phosphorous flowing to the Bay by 40% by the year 2000, from their 1985 levels (Blankenship 2). The first step in this program was to reduce the amount of nutrient pollution from point sources (end–of–the–pipe) such as wastewater treatment facilities that feed into the many tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay (The Chesapeake Bay Watershed 1). However, the results of these cleanup efforts were not enough to reach the goal of the program. Therefore, the areas involved now had to target the non–point sources of nitrogen and phosphorous. The non–point sources are storm water run off from agricultural and developed sites, air pollution, and the development of sensitive forests that act as buffers for tributaries and the Bay (1). The Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act of 1989 took aim at these sources in Tidewater Virginia by requiring resource management practices in the use and development of environmentally sensitive land (1). The Chesapeake Bay Preservation Area Ordinance of 1991 also took aim at these non–point sources by designating environmentally sensitive areas in Virginia Beach as Resource Protection Areas and Resource Management Areas which are intended to protect the integrity of the lands that effect the Chesapeake Bay (2). • 23. The Chesapeake Bay Scene in Fig. 1.1., the Chesapeake Bay is substantial in size; at roughly 64,000 miles, it contains roughly fifty rivers and thousands of streams and creeks. It encompasses parts of 6 states, including all of Washington, DC. The Chesapeake Bay is what is known as a watershed, an area that contributes to the drainage to a water body, stream, river, lake or ocean. Rainwater that falls within the 64,000 square miles that is the Chesapeake Bay will subsequently travel through many streams and rivers, eventually making its way into the largest estuary system in the United States. The Estuary System An estuary system is "the resulting collisions of sweet and salt–fresh river water flowing seaward and ocean water inland." It is an aquatic system where salt and freshwater are constantly mixing. An estuary system is one of most active systems of the planet; it is a hybrid system that contains the best and worst qualities of the ocean, river, and lake systems it conglomerates. Estuaries are unique in nature because of their ability to be the most productive ecosystem on the entire planet; humans have attempted and failed to reach the productivity that estuaries naturally grant. There productivity lies it the constant change that occurs from the conflicting flows of fresh and ocean water. Ocean and freshwater are measured largely based on salinity, or the level of parts of salt per thousand. Ocean water usually has around 35 parts per thousands of salt water, while freshwater ... In fact, if you remove a particular species from the waters of the bay, it can cause the entire coastal ecosystem to essentially collapse. What type of animal could possible have such a significant impact on the environment? Oysters. THE LIFE OF A KEYSTONE SPECIES The oyster is arguably one of the most unappreciated animals in the Animal Kingdom. It is neither fuzzy nor warm. It does not even have a face! Yet somehow, this unlikeable creature is one of the most important in its ecosystem. In fact, oysters are considered a keystone species, meaning the size of its population has a disproportionally large effect on the health of its ecosystem. What exactly makes oysters so important? For one thing, oysters are filter feeders. They remove organic and inorganic particles in the water that could be potentially harmful for other organisms. In fact, adult oysters can filter up to 50 gallons of water each day (Chesapeake Bay Foundation). By removing microscopic algae and other suspended solids and releasing it back into the water in "bundles," other organisms are able to utilize the pseudo–feces for nutrients. Not only do oysters increase the clarity of the water, but they also provide a sanctuary for other bay organisms. Oysters provide the perfect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. Chesapeak Bay and Jamestown It is evident that every culture is affected by the environment in which said culture evolves. Whether these effects can be observed in the gods differing societies worship, or by the way in which resources are accumulated, the reasons are all the same. How each society and culture interacts with its environment dictates its development and growth. There is no more evident an example of this than the Chesapeake Bay area, pre, mid, and post colonization, using the colony of Jamestown as an model for contact interactions between two distinct cultures, and how these relations can be dictated by the environment. In the period termed pre–contact the indigenous peoples living in the Chesapeake Bay region were known collectively as the Powhatan people. This name was used for the collective of the Algonquian speaking tribes in the Chesapeake Bay and, during the time of interest, was led by Chief Powhatan, who took his tribe name as his ruling name. Chief Powhatan inherited the rule of six tribes when he became chief, as well as having accumulated a multitude of tribes during his reign to create the Powhatan confederacy. Within this confederacy, each distinct tribe was responsible for providing military support when requested, as well as were required to provide taxes in the form of pelts, food, copper and pearls. Scientists and researchers began giving a large volume of effort and look into the extremely complex problems that face the Chesapeake Bay. When research for the improving and saving of the Bay's overall health began it seemed very simple and there were only a couple of problems. The problems included nutrients from agricultural runoff; these nutrients were phosphorus and nitrogen. The combination of the nutrients in the Bay caused a large volume of algae that choked some of the marine life. While bringing in algae the nutrients also killed grasses on the seafloor. These seafloor bed grasses that once covered more than half of the Chesapeake Bay's floor now only covered a tenth of their original area. Though the estuary was having problems it did not receive the terrible pollution from industries that many large rivers and lakes do in other urban areas (Brown, p. 397). Needless to say, it does not mean that the Bay was out of trouble by only having to deal with the problems of the nutrients runoff. The nitrogen and phosphorus is more than enough to handle the Chesapeake Bay. The video exposes a multitude of people and institutions that purposely turn a blind eye to what is going on in the environment. The main reason the state of the environment is still subpar is due of the lack of interest of the people about what's going on. Due to the lack of interest there are many preventable problems that exist that are contributing to the depletion of our safe and healthy environment. For this reason, the northern New England colonies and the southern colonies like Virginia and Maryland in the Chesapeake bay area started to establish ways of life that began to develop very different lifestyles. The reasoning behind the foundation of each colony is what created such a substantial amount of difference between two areas of English settlement. Pervious pavement, also referred to as porous or permeable pavement, is actually a system consisting of an open–graded surface layer of concrete, asphalt, or pavers, typically placed over an open–graded aggregate base layer. The pavement structure has a large percentage of void spaces allowing water to permeate through the surface and base at a rate comparable to that of a grass lawn" (Broviak). Strict stormwater control measures have recently been passed in states surrounding the Chesapeake's watershed, including Maryland, and many require a certain amount of green space or use of green technologies in construction. It is understood that there is not just one problem causing the dead zone in the bay. Two main contributors are the focus. Details are presented on the problems brought to the bay by agriculture, and development. The language is easy to understand and the scientific and environmental message is conveyed in a way that can be followed. Summary of source The importance of the Chesapeake Bay is introduced. The bay is home to a large amount of seafood businesses, and many people fish the bay and its tributaries for sport. Grass beds are essential to many of the organisms living in this ecosystem, but are being destroyed by pollution. Agriculture involves more than a fourth of the bay's watershed. This makes agricultural runoff a big focus. Excessive nitrogen and phosphorus causes eutrophication. These nutrients come from pesticides and sewage also.
