The Shaping of American Society: The Moon Landing
The Moon Landing signified a moment in time that would never be forgotten. Even though it
happened decades ago, the world still feels the effect it had on the world. John F. Kennedy had a
dream to land a man on the moon, but many people in the nation believed it to be foolish.
(Linkinholder) Yet after it happened," it became one of the highest accomplishments in the history
of mankind". When the three men landed on the moon it was a change for the nation, but it was a
more of a change for the people that were on the mission.

Case: Right Management Consultants Succeeds by Managing Change
Question 1: What are the challenges faced by Right when the downsizing effort no longer is a
popular human resource strategy?
One of the main challenges that the Right company will have to face when downsizing effort is no
longer a popular human resource strategy is quite simply finding a new strategy that will work. In
finding a new strategy one must take the strategic approach to HRM. In the strategic approach to
HRM there are six key elements that are essential for HR managers to consider:
– recognize the impact of the outside environment
– recognize the impact of competition and the dynamics of the labor market
– has a long range focus
– focuses on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If Right could improve the qualities mentioned in the previous sentence on their HR crew they will
be much better prepared with the tools necessary to combat a changing world.
Case: Polaroid–A Hard Landing
Question 1: What had been Polaroid's overall growth strategy? How did this affect its HR planning
and strategy?
Polaroid's overall growth strategy was to be the number one and only instant photography company
through the invention of it's own technology in its own laboratories. "Growth objectives are a key
part of an organization's overall strategic plan. Almost all strategic plans deal with the size the
company wishes to be in the future" (Human Resource Management pg. 110). One of the ways in
which Polaroid planned to be the only instant photography company–in turn would also make it the
greatest–was through 533 patents. "Polaroid is still characterized by many as a company that hold
too tight a grip on its patents" (Human Resource Management pg. 130). Polaroid's strategic plan was
always to stick with their one invention, improve on it's technology, and target the sole market. This
affected HR planning and strategy because Edwin H. Land did not want to enter other markets; Land
wanted Polaroid to be about instant photography. The decision to stay in only one market affected
HR from doing what they are suppose to do. It prevented them from being creative or innovative.

Movement west was a controversial topic in 1800's, many people believed that it would be
beneficial to grow west but some thought that life out west was too harsh and that we would not
gain anything from moving west.
Edwin James studied botany, geology and medicine; he was commanded by, Major Stephen H. Long
to ascend the Platte River and explore the Red River, Arkansas River, South Fork and the Colorado

How Does Oil Affect Our Lives Depend On Oil
Introduction
Most people probably do not think about how much of their lives depend on oil. This profitable
commodity is constantly being used around the world, twenty four hours a day and seven days a
week. From the scented creams people use on their bodies, to the airline jets soaring above, oils are
being used. Oil is one of three major forms of fossil fuels, coal and natural gas being the rest. Fossil
fuels began forming millions of years ago in the Carboniferous Period when trees, plants, and small
organisms died (DOE, 2015). Eventually the fossils sank to the bottom of many swamps and oceans
forming layers of peat (a brown, soil–like, and spongy material). Over thousands of years, peat was
covered by clay, sand, and other minerals which turned into a type of rock called sedimentary. Over
thousands of years rocks piled on top of the peat creating more pressure. Eventually the pressure
managed to squeeze water out of the peat and over millions of years, this mineral rich water turned
into the three major fossil fuels that people know and use today (DOE, 2015). Regardless of its
proficiency and success, the oil industry has become one of the most unethical businesses in the
world. Their blatant disregard for the environment and its inhabitants have continuously put them in
the crosshairs of many conservatives and concerned citizens. This paper primarily focuses on the
ethical dilemmas that surround the oil industry.

July is Sunglass Awareness Month at Atlantis Vision Center. Seems like a great time to explore the
history of the accessory that's fashionable, functional, and fun to wear.
Did you know people have been using eyewear to block out the sun for about two–thousand years?
The first people to use sun–blocking eyewear were the people of the Thule culture, who were
ancestors of the modern Inuit. They wore snow goggles, made of bone, leather, and wood. They cut
small slits which only let through a small sliver of light, effectively shielding the eyes from the
bright glare of sunlight that reflected off the snow.
In the 12th century, Chinese judges would wear sunglasses to hide their expression as they
questioned witnesses. These spectacles were made of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They didn't protect from the sun's rays, but the idea of altering the vision through colored lenses
makes these items a predecessor of modern day sunglasses.
For centuries, glasses were held in place by either metal that pinched the nose or loops of ribbon that
wrapped around the ears. People who wore these glasses surely grew tired of pushing them back
into place, so English optician Edward Scarlett invented temple–gripping sidepieces around 1730.
The first glasses with UVA lenses were made in 18th century Venice. Because they were used by
noblemen to shield their eyes from the sun's reflection on the lagoon, these shades were known as
"gondola glasses"
James Ayscough was the first to start experimenting with tinted lenses in the 18th century. These
weren't sunglasses, however. The blue– or green–tinted glass was believed to correct for specific
vision impairments. And yellow– and brown–tinted glasses were used by victims of syphilis in the
19th century because one of the symptoms of syphilis is sensitivity to

Edwin H. Land Invented The Polaroid Camera
Edwin H. Land
Edwin H. Land invented the Polaroid camera and developed many uses for polarized glass.
American inventor Edwin H. Land was the driving force behind the Polaroid Corporation 's
engineering and marketing successes. He founded the company to manufacture his inventions, such
as polarized windows and sunglasses, and he also produced revolutionary optics for the military
during World War II (1939–45). It was his development of the instant camera, however, that made
his company famous and allowed him to dominate the instant–photography market with cameras
that first produced pictures in sepia tones, then black and white, and finally in color. Routinely
discarding conventional wisdom, Land believed that market research was not ... Show more content

They were married in 1929, and Land returned to Harvard that same year. This time the university
provided him with a laboratory to conduct his research.
Develops commercial method to polarize light
It had been known since the eighteenth century that certain kinds of crystals (clear colorless glasses
of superior quality) could affect the direction of light waves. In his effort to develop a method for
polarizing light, Land was searching for a crystal that could not only reduce glare but was stable and
economical enough to be produced commercially. He conceived the idea of two plates that would
absorb the light waves that were not wanted and transmit those that were. He then succeeded in
aligning millions of microscopic iodine crystals in one direction, thus creating the first polarizer.
Land presented a paper on his discovery at a physics colloquium (meeting) at Harvard in February
1932. In June, he left the university, one semester short of a degree, and never returned.
Invents "Polaroid"
With a Harvard graduate student named George Wheelwright, who had been one of his teachers,
Land formed Land–Wheelwright Laboratories, Inc., in June 1932. The two men worked on
developing methods of manufacturing polarized sheets made of crystals trapped in nitrocellulose
(any of several nitric–acid esters of cellulose used for making explosives, plastics, and varnishes).
On November 30, 1934, the camera company Eastman Kodak gave Land–Wheelwright an order for

moai are topped with a cylindrical stone headdress called a Pukao, which was carved from red
scoria rock. The moai were carved in volcanic calderas, which are volcanic features usually formed
by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption. Most of the moai are located in and around
these calderas, but many have been moved and placed upon great stone platforms called ahus. The
ahus were most commonly found along the island's coastline, and were stood to face inland, perhaps
to guard and protect the families that built them. Traditionally, most marriages were monogamous.
Some of the more wealthy men would have more than one wife. Most of the marriages were
arranged, many being betrothed in infancy. Nowadays marriages are by choice. The couple's fathers
are involved in approving and arranging the marriage. There are three ceremonies in a wedding: a
civil ceremony, a church ceremony, and a large feast hosted by the groom's father following
traditional practice. After the marriage the couple will usually live with one of their families until a
home can be built for them. Traditional basic family units

Geology And Capitalism : Science And Technology On A World...
"Geology and Capitalism: Science and Technology in a World of Oil Abundance" The recent drop in
the price of crude oil by more than half since June 2014 involved complex causes, but much of the
problem stemmed from an imbalance of supply and demand. The oil industry thrives on advances in
science and technology and historically has proven remarkably adept at producing knowledge and
techniques to locate, process, and transport oil but ill–equipped at using its investments into
industrial research and development to create market stability. For example, American energy
production has boomed in recent years due to advances in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal
drilling but those innovations created vulnerability for American oil producers and particularly for
smaller independents when world production outpaced consumption and prices dropped. Despite
frequent successes in industrial research and development, state intervention historically has
trumped science and technology as the best solution to the oil industry's boom–and–bust cycles of
capitalism. This paper argues that government power wielded at the local, state, and federal levels
offered capitalists greater remedies to balance supply and demand and stabilize markets than did
scientific and technological solutions. Large and small oil producers and government bureaucrats
who addressed the problem of oil overproduction often invoked the term "conservation" as a
solution, but this was a highly contested term

The Destruction Of Salem By Arthur Miller
Armania Heckenmueller Mrs. Hagerty H English II 2EF 11/23/15 The Destruction of Salem
Through Greed and Vengeance in The Crucible During the time The Crucible was set, the
community of Salem was awry. It did not have the solid characteristics of what a healthy town
should look like. Instead there was no trust between people, everyone was watching out for only
themselves, and most of the townspeople were turning their backs on the disastrous deeds of the
court. The people of Salem feel like they have no one to turn to, so fear crept into their minds and
hearts. They developed hysteria which caused the town to slowly disintegrate. This panic allows
other people in their community to take advantage of them and manipulate them for their own
purposes. In his play, The Crucible, Arthur Miller shows how vengeance and greed destroy the
community through the characters of Abigail Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Putnam, and Reverend Parris.
Abigail Williams is a great example of how vengefulness undermines the court's authority. Abigail
Williams, a girl who has an "endless capacity for dissembling" (Act I), seeks revenge not only
through the court system, but through Tituba, her slave, and the girls she manipulates. Jealous of
Elizabeth Proctor, who she thought was a "cold, sniveling woman" (Act I), for firing her after
learning of her affair with her husband John Proctor, Abigail sees no other method to regain her
"lover" other than killing his wife. After Abigail comes to this conclusion

Who Is Solomon Northup?
Solomon Northup was born a free man in Minerva, New York, in 1808. Little is known about his
mother, whom his narrative does not identify by name. His father, Mintus, was originally enslaved
to the Northup family from Rhode Island, but he was freed after the family moved to New York. As
a young man, Northup helped his father with farming chores and worked as a raftsman on the
waterways of upstate New York. He married Anne Hampton, a woman of mixed (black, white, and
Native American) ancestry, on Christmas Day, 1829. They had three children together. During the
1830s, Northup became locally renowned as an excellent fiddle–player. In 1841, two men offered

as well as financial loss, Tibeats hires Northup out to cut sugarcane in the "Big Cane Break" farther
down the Red River. Around this time, Northup learns that Eliza has died of malnourishment and
grief at the loss of her daughter (pp. 159–160). Soon afterwards, Tibeats sells Northup to Edwin
Epps, a "repulsive and coarse" cotton planter whom Northup describes as being devoid of any
redeeming qualities.(p. 162). The second half of Northup's narrative is chiefly devoted to describing
life on a cotton plantation. He provides detailed descriptions of the processes of planting,
cultivating, and picking cotton (pp. 163–168), character sketches of his fellow slaves (pp. 185–190),
and gradations of punishment for various offenses (pp. 179–180). As he was periodically hired out
to sugar plantations as well, Northup describes the methods of planting, harvesting, and processing
the cane in similar detail (pp. 208–213). Though his account reveals the misery and despair of field
slaves, like many other slave narratives, it also reflects the wry humor with which Northup endured
his situation. For example, in describing the meager rations allotted for each week's subsistence, he
quips that "no slave of [Edwin Epps's] is ever likely to suffer from the gout, superinduced by
excessive high living" (p. 169). Likewise, he begins his description

Hubble Space Telescope Essay
According to a newsletter sent out by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA),
the purpose of the Hubble Space Telescope was, and is, to gather light from cosmic objects so
scientists can better understand the universe around us. Up until the deployment of the Hubble
Space Telescope, all telescopes were Earth based and had the disadvantage of having to peer at the
stars through the Earth's atmosphere. The Earth's atmosphere provides a large amount of distortion
when viewing very far objects, like space, through a telescope. Placing a telescope in space
eliminates the distortion and provides images that are significantly clearer and in turn, easier to
examine. The Hubble Space Telescopes six different science instruments ... Show more content on

The fourth important instrument is the Near Infrared Camera and Multi–Object Spectrometer, which
is basically Hubble's heat reader. It is very sensitive to infrared light which makes it useful for
observing objects tainted by gases and dust. It is also used to peer into the deepest parts of space.
The fifth important instrument is the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, which is a utility
instrument that separates the light from the cosmos into its component colors. It is also used to study
black holes, the composition of galaxies, and the atmosphere of planets around all stars. The sixth
and final important instrument is called the Fine Guidance Sensors, which target devices that lock
on to "guide stars" and measure their positions in relation to the objects being viewed. The sensors
also perform celestial measurements.
The Hubble Space Telescope is powered by solar cells which are solid–state electrical devices that
convert the energy of light directly into electricity by an effect called the Photovoltaic effect. When
many solar cells are put together they are called solar modules which can also capture energy from
sunlight. When many modules are placed together it is called a solar panel. Hubble had many

Photography has many purposes, the main one is to freeze a memory.
Photography, many people have an idea of what it is, it's a picture right? I believe that photography
is much more than just a picture. When taking a photo there is almost always a purpose, whether it's
a family photo or just watching your silly dog hang out the window. In the two seconds it takes
someone to capture the image they are documenting, they are making a memory, something to look
back on. You freeze that moment forever. "When you think of a picture, 90% of Americans think of

History Of The Topographical Engineers
The history of the Topographical Engineers defines and highlights many changes in the Army over
the years. The resources and assets provided over the years has changed in some dynamics.
Engineers have always and will always provide many needed skill sets. Engineers have been the
driving force through the years for the military. It has been the engineers that provided an
unexplained amount of capabilities to the battlefield. Those capabilities were not just limited to war
though. The contributions of the engineers have been used on the civil side during times of peace as
well. The engineers have always provided an ever evolving skill that is in broad use in multiple
ways. Topographical Engineers saw many changes in the early years leading to the engineers of
today. Those changes have in no way changed the mission set forth in the beginning by the
Topographical Engineers, to the current mission of the Corp of Engineers today. In all those changes

Origin of the Topographical Engineers The history of the engineers dates all the way back to the
Continental Army in 1775. During this time it was determined by the Continental Congress that
there would be three positions. The first of the three positions would be the Chief Engineer along

based forces and offer many similar career fields, the two branches are different in some very crucial
areas. To accurately compare and contrast the services, it is important to look at their overall
missions and career fields. The Army has its roots in the Continental Army which was formed on 14

Both the Army and the Marine Corps offers similar career opportunities in areas such as infantry,
armor, aviation, administration. However, due to the Marine Corps' attachment with the Navy, it
does not directly employ health–care professionals such as nurses, doctors, dentists or psychologists
like the Army. Instead, it receives these services from commissioned Navy medical officers. The
Marines are a highly mobile amphibious attack force. Marines are trained to attack from the water
and establish a beach head, an area of control on foreign soil. After the Marines take territory, other
armed forces such as the US Army move in to maintain control, while the Marines move on.
Marines are mobile, lightweight, and very rapid. I would compare the Marines to the head of the
spear, wedging in to get a foothold and racing ahead once the land has been secured. In addition to
acting as a lightweight attack force from the ocean, Marines are also perfectly capable of taking
territory on land. Marines are trained for rapid deployment, and are often the first US military
personnel on site. Marines also guard American embassies overseas, providing embassy security and
safety. In volatile areas, being a Marine embassy guard is a very risky job. The US Army, on the
other hand, is the primary ground–based military forces. As such, the US Army captures and holds

Ancient Egyptian Medicine
Medical practices in Ancient Egypt had a great impact on the medical practices that are used today,
in fact, they were predestinates of those that we have today. This paper will give an extensive
background into the details of medicine and medical practices of physicians and healers in Ancient
Egypt, as well as compare some of those same practices with modern practices that we use in
medicine during this time period. The practices discussed in this paper include how the Ancient
Egyptians chose doctors, how the Egyptians diagnosed their patients, minor surgery practices that
are still used in modern medicine today, remedies and medicinal herbs that can be found in modern

Most doctors were sent to institutions called the House of Life. The institution was actually a section
of the temple that was not only used for the teaching of medical students, but was also the same
space where sacred papyri were written and copied. Only a select few were allowed in the House of
Life, therefore little is known about Ancient Egyptian medical training and whether or not
examinations were require, or even if the training was fully practical. However, in modern–day
America there are more qualifications for physicians. Physicians in the United States must also
complete medical school, but this is a long and hard process. Pre–medical students in the United

accepted into medical school. You are judged not only on your academic performance and
competency, but also your Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores, community

reconstruction Essay
Andrew Johnson took office after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. He was a Southern
Democrat from Tennessee, when he became president, the Civil War had ended and reconstruction
was in its beginning stages. Johnson was then faced with the same problems Lincoln had –– the
challenge of mending a broken nation, yet there was a definite difference in the ways Johnson and
Lincoln approached the problems of Reconstruction. Johnson was not one of our best or brightest
presidents, he did not care about his public appearance and he was not good at making decisions.
One of the most illogical decisions Johnson made as president was to start a new reconstruction
plan, before his death Lincoln already had a plan set out. Yet Johnson ... Show more content on

This was not a good idea for Johnson because he already had a lot of enemies because he was a
radical democrat from the South. The south loathed him because he was a democrat and the North
loathed him due to his lenient treatment of the South. The North wanted to deal with the South
brutality yet Johnson handed out many pardons to the Confederates, pushed to restore civilian
control in the Southern states and shied away from implementing voting rights for blacks. From the
beginning, Johnson was at odds with the Radical Republicans, who favored radical reconstruction of
the defeated Southern states, including military rule and distribution of both land and voting rights
to blacks. Later these same people voted to impeach him.
Johnson believed that the government should be indulgent with the Southerners. Since that is how
he felt he took the insinuative to make a proclamation of amnesty in May 1865, without giving the
public any say in the matter. This angered a lot of Democrats and Northerners who felt that the
South should not just be pardoned that they should be reprimanded. Then Johnson took it a step
further by not only pardoning all of the southerners but, allowing them to have and form their own
new governments. This allowed the south to have ex–confederate leaders to hold spaces in the
senate, for example, Senator Alexander H. Stephens who was the vice president of the Confederacy.
At this point a lot of people were tried of Johnson as there

An Analysis of Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio Essay
An Analysis of Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio
Under the guise of simplicity, Sherwood Anderson weaves an intricate tale of man's struggle for
understanding and love in Winesburg, Ohio. Against a backdrop rich with symbolism, he examines
man's truths crumbling behind the walls he has built.
Anderson employs a strong use of symbolism in "Adventure." Waiting in vain for a self–made
fantasy to realize, Alice Hindman sacrifices a meaningful life within society. Alice's "outward
existence appears to run steadily downhill into dull meaninglessness, her inward life climbs with
increasing intensity toward a climax of desperation and hysteria" (Joselyn 450). The intensity, "a
passionate restlessness," forces Alice to realize that she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Twisted apples, rejected by the pickers, are like the misunderstood misfits rejected by society;
underneath they are just as wonderful and yet "only a few know the sweetness of the twisted apples"
(Anderson 36). Paper pills, the unspoken ideas of Doctor Reefy, are doses of medicine he cannot
prescribe. Another object, money symbolizes the means for freedom or control. Elizabeth Willard's
father, on his death bed, gives her eight hundred dollars. Hoping she will "take it and go away" he
pleads with her to keep silent about the money (Anderson 225). Ironically, the very symbol of
freedom remains hidden behind a wall, although she struggles in silence to reveal its location and
purpose. In "Drink," Tom Foster's grandmother finds money and purchases tickets to escape a city
filled with "ugliness and crime and lust" (Anderson 215). Arriving in Winesburg, a bustling town
different from the small village of her childhood, she wonders if she has made a mistake. Money did
not provide the freedom she sought. Money played an important part in Doctor Parcival's
relationship with his brother. His brother controlled the family with his money and the bitterness
remained with the doctor throughout his life. Jesse Bentley hungered for what money represented:
control, a means for "mastering the souls of his people" (Anderson 67). The comparison between the
Willard Hotel and the owner, Tom, is another example of Anderson's use of symbolism. The
building is aging, the wallpaper fading.

The Civil War Of The United States Prisons
"Brother against brother." This was the Civil War being summed up in just three words. Mike
Wright wrote, "On both sides of the war, men and women were locked away in dark prisons or held
in outdoor camps under blistering sun and freezing snow. They were fed too little and lived and died
under primitive conditions." One would arguably say that the Northern prisons might feel a little
more at home than the Southern prisons, but this wasn't the case at all, the prisons on each side were
both poorly managed, overcrowded and full of diseases. The intentions of the prisons were not
necessarily to kill the inmates, but because of poor planning were the prisons filthy. Both the
Union's and the Confederate's prisons were equally appalling. The ... Show more content on

During the early years of the war, the two sides frequently had prisoner exchanges, but that was
stopped by a decision made by U.S General Grant and Secretary of War, Stanton. They both thought
that it was pointless and using too much time and people. Robert H. Kellogg, who was a sergeant
major, described his entry as a prisoner into the camp on May 2nd, 1864: "As we entered the place,
a spectacle met our eyes that almost froze our blood with horror, and made our hearts fail within us.
Before us were forms that had once been active and erect; stalwart men, now nothing but mere
walking skeletons, covered with filth and intensity of their feeling, exclaimed with earnestness.
"Can this be hell?" "God protect us!" and all thought that He alone could bring them out alive from
so terrible a place. In the center of the whole was a swamp, occupying about three or four acres of
the narrowed limits, and a part of this marshy place had been used by the prisoners as a sink, and
excrement covered the ground, the scent arising from which was suffocating. The ground allotted to
our ninety was near the edge of this plague–spot, and how we were to live through the warm
summer weather in the midst of such fearful surroundings, was more than we cared to think of just
then." Andersonville is a southern camp that could easily be compared to concentration camps,.
Henry Wirz, in charge of Andersonville, was tried and executed for the crimes that he committed

Halsey: A Feminist Analysis
Though some people can be ignorant when it comes to what one can do or say, its good to
understand we all have different opinions on things, but you shouldn't say you believe or follow
something just because one of your peers does, its good to have a voice and state what you believe.
Margaret J. Wheatley once said, "There is no power for change greater than a community
discovering what it cares about"("Margaret J. Wheatley Quote"). The message behind the quote is
that when one can support one and other despite their own personal opinions, good things can come
out of it. You don't have to agree with what others say, but you should respect that they feel
differently than you might. This essay will show you how Halsey is connected to the idea ... Show

Essay on Juvenile Deliquency
Edwin H. Sutherland's formulation of differential association theory proposed that delinquency, like
any other form of behavior, is a product of social interaction. On October 14th, 2002, 17 year old
Lee Boyd Malvo was charged by the state of Virginia for two capital crimes: the murder of FBI
analyst Linda Franklin "in the commission of an act of terrorism" and the murder of more than one
person in a three–year period. Sutherland's nine propositions of differential association best explains
Malvo's act for the following reasons: (1) Malvo learned how to commit each heinous crime through
his social interaction within his intimate group, (2) Malvo learned the techniques to commit each
crime through his mentor, i.e. learning the skills ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edwin H. Sutherland's propositions of differential association argues criminal behavior, like any
other behavior, is learned from others. That is, "delinquent behavior is not an inherited trait but
rather an acquired one" (Juvenile Delinquency, p.153). Sutherland claims that criminal behavior/
juvenile delinquency is learned through a youth's relationship within intimate personal groups.
These intimate groups are far more influential for adolescents than any other form of
communication such as the media. In the case of Lee Boyd Malvo, he had a personal relationship
with Muhammad, Malvo's mother ex–boyfriend. After Malvo's biological father left his mother, she
often left Malvo unattended and in the care of friends. Malvo's mother eventually abandoned him
again which he then went to live with Muhammad, a gulf war veteran, who had became his father
figure, friend and mentor. Malvo's longing for a father was replaced by Muhammad and the duration
of his time outside of school was with Muhammad. Malvo had only been living in the United States
for a year after migrating from Jamaica, before he moved in with Muhammad. One can assume that
Malvo became attached to Muhammad because he lacked a father figure as well as companionship
in a new country where he felt alienated from family and friends in Jamaica. Muhammad later
converted Malvo to Islam.
If the principal learning of criminal behavior occurs within intimate personal groups, differential

Overpopulation can be described as the failure of the world's resources to sustain the population.
The limited natural resources have increased challenges for countries facing this. This paper covers
the effects of overpopulation in the world today.
The current world's population is approximately six billion people, and the amount of time that it
takes for the population to increase by another billion is decreasing with each billion. It is estimated
that they will be about eight billion people by the year 2020, and this is due to its continuation of
growth" (Southwick 159). An understanding of the causes and what might possibly happen is the
first step to dealing with the population crisis.

This results in a high level of crime because the people will do anything to survive. (Dolan 55)
Overpopulation does not just affect the standard of living, but also the environment. Every person on
the planet takes up space, but space is needed for farmland and forests. People excrete wastes and
pollution that flow into water systems and animal habitats. Resulting in polluted water and killing of
the wildlife. Many people cannot do personal hygiene every day because of the status of the water in
their country. The major negative effect is the limited and scarce natural resources. Main resources
such as: water, land and energy among others scarce or diminished. Populations have become so
large that they're draining the resources where there is no sufficient supply for the needs for all. As a
result, this has led to depletion of resources, and extinction of species and forestry. (Simonetta
2009).
"Most ecologists consider human population growth to be one of the most serious problems
contributing to environmental scarceness. Human population growth works in combination with
excessive consumption to threaten global environmentally." (Southwick 160). It has been disputed
that having a larger world population leads to an increase in human capital, will lead to an increase
in the world's standard of living. Dr. Julian Simon believes that the world is making progress
because people are living longer and more fulfilling

Short–term Memory Affects Color Perception in Context The purpose of the experiment was to
study the effects of short–term memory on perceptual observations, determine whether there is
actually an independence between color memory and surface color assessment, and to discuss the
differences between perception and memory characteristics. Another goal of this study was to
estimate surface reflectance of an object from a general measurement of incoming light signals and
figure out how it affects memory with realistic scenes and tasks. Perception is defined as the ability
to see, hear, or become aware of something through senses and memory is defined as the faculty by

Our brain relies on spatial frequency, bistable figures, motion direction, and structure–from–motion
to help aid in the determination of surface color, scene complexity, and context color. All of those
plus previous knowledge about encounters can affect how the brain stores the information. The
interaction implies that during information processing, memory and perception must be studied
jointly. There are three steps that our brains take in order for us to make a decision based on the task
given to us. Step one consists of a person observing both surface reflectance and illumination. Step
two happens when the background color dominates the observes' illumination based on spatial
length. Step three, the person will use prior experiences of reflectance and illumination. Step four
takes step three, but compares and updates the observation based on whats being displayed in the
trials. This allows the observer to make a precise conclusion. One major issue that arose during this
study was bias. However, in this case, more bias indicates better consistency. Bias was defined as

Effects of Overpopulation and Industrialization on the Environment
Throughout history, the world's population has expanded in an extremely exponential fashion––
taking over three million years to achieve a one billion person benchmark, it then only took 130, 30,
15, 12, and 11 years to reach subsequent billions, respectively. (Southwick, 159) Such a massive and
still increasing population, combined with the environmentally detrimental repercussions of
industrialization (as a result of the need to sustain such a large population), namely pollution from
fossil fuels, has begun to take a serious toll on our planet's ecosystem. Moreover, "some scientists

Regardless of whether or not pollution increases as population increases, (Edwin Dolin strongly
refutes this principle that population increases lead to increases in pollution) the statistics
nonetheless illustrate that increased population, and now what many consider overpopulation, has
without a doubt led to continuingly deteriorating environmental conditions. Especially since the
beginning of the Industrial Revolution, new technologies have enabled cultures and communities,
initially in the new territories traversed by the Europeans, to expand in populace: "we are forever
realizing that the Industrial Revolution has changed forever the relationship between humanity and
nature. There is a real concern that by the middle or the end of the 21st century human activities will
have changed the basic conditions that have allowed life to thrive on earth." (Internet 1) These basic
conditions include the earth's natural climate and the depletion and manipulation of its natural
resources. Such expansion (since the Industrial Revolution) and creation of new establishments
began, on a small scale, to effect the environment in many ways. The first element of the
environment that was immediately effected was forests. Massive deforestation occurred, and still
does so today, as land was cleared to make way for new towns. Moreover, many construction
projects also used wood from trees, not to mention other commercial uses, such as paper, and fuel.

What caused injury and death during (and after) ancient battles? Soldiering has never been an easy
job. In any period of history the risks are rarely any different, death and injury stalk every battlefield
the world over. Egyptian and Greek warfare became sophisticated theatres of mortality and injury in
their day, the means by which the enemy could be dispatched were numerous and effective.
Rivalling this however, was nature; infection and disease were as big a risk to the soldier as any
blade. Injury is also present in the mind of the warrior, the stress of battle, the grief, the inner
turmoil caused by murder and the horrors one could witness remained long in the memory of every

causing the casualties of Egyptian warfare, the physical evidence unsupportive due to flesh decay

are to take the Deir el Bahri tomb as an example there appears to be only 60 or so dead out of a
force of perhaps hundreds, a reasonably low percentage, it would be reasonable to assume that death
and injury trailed the surviving soldier home. Many of the injuries sustained during a battle would
not be immediately lethal, Egyptian soldiers could carry war wounds to their death. Short term post
battle deaths would occur from damage like: internal bleeding, blood loss, infection and injuries
which would prevent the soldier from functions like eating and drinking. Many more would survive
battles with injuries that whilst were not lethal in the short term would leave the sufferer with severe
pain and/or disability. We know that many could return from battle with brain damage, the Edwin

Nineteen Years A Slave By Solomon Northup Essay
As Americans today, we learn the history of our country, the good and the bad, however no one can
truly grasp the realities of slavery unless they have experienced it themselves. 12 Years a Slave is a
phenomenal book because, being a reflection of Solomon Northup's life, it accurately portrays the
life of a black slave during that time period, including intense detail that arises a variety of emotions
in the reader throughout the book. Published in 1853 in New York by Derby & Miller, and written
by Solomon Northup himself, his memoir entitled, 12 Years a Slave is a phenomenal narrative of the
accounts he experienced as a free man kidnapped and sold into slavery that assisted in opening the
eyes of the public to the disturbing and barbaric realities of slavery in the Antebellum South.
Throughout the book, Solomon Northup gives an account of his life from the time he lived as a free
man, to the time he was kidnapped and sold into slavery, as well as his experiences as a slave, and
up until he became a free man again. In the beginning of the book, Solomon explains his life as he
"enjoyed the blessings of liberty in a free state" (Northup 10). His father was a slave who acquired
his freedom when his slave owner died and was then able to be emancipated, which led to Solomon
being born a free man. Unfortunately, Solomon's mother died while he was confined in slavery.

The Causes Of The Cold War
The Cold War was the period after World War II and the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist
Republics (USSR) in 1991. During the Cold War the world was divided into two ideological groups
the; US led capitalist "west" and the Soviet union led communist "east". The US–Soviet struggle
took many different forms and touched many areas, but never became a "hot war" through direct
military confrontation between the two main antagonists.
The cause of the Cold War was many things. The USSR and the United States of America were the
two leading and most powerful countries of the world but they had many differences. The
Americans were capitalists whereas the Soviet Union were communist and they both feared each
other. The Americans were afraid of a communist attack and refused to share nuclear secrets with
the Soviet Union. On the other hand, the USSR feared the US attack and their atomic bombs. The
USSR wanted to expand further out and wanted to secure the western border of Europe this made
Americans worried about communism spreading worldwide.
The Red Scare was the fear over the perceived threat posed by communists in the US. The Red
Scare led to a range of actions for example on March 21, 1947 President Harry S Truman issued the
Executive Order 9835, known as the loyalty order. It required all federal employees to be analyzed
to determine their loyalty to the government. The House Un–American Activities Committee

slaves were treated back in the 1800s. Northup discussed in details how slaves were mistreated and
cruelly beaten by their masters. Masters were heartless; they would beat their slaves till they were
close to take their last breath. Many people feel grateful that they were not born during the 1800s.
Northup showed different aspects of slavery. He deliberated his days from a free man, to held
captive, serving as a slave for three different masters in the south, to gaining his freedom again after
twelve years. The first two chapters of Twelve Years a Slave, the author, Solomon Northup,
informed the reader about his life as a free man. He was born a free African American in July 1808
in Minerva, New York. He was the son of an originally enslaved father to the Northup family; this is
where Solomon received his last name. However, his father was freed after the Northup family
moved to New York. While growing up, Solomon helped his father with the farm duties. Also, he
had a degree of proficiency in reading and writing. At age twenty–one in 1829 on a Christmas Day,

A Day Not Forgotten, the Attack on Pearl Harbor
K. D.
HIST 102
Instructor Amy Ware
October 23, 2010
The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941 remains a clear memory for both
nations. Everything seemed to have played in favor of the Empire of Japan; from planning, to
gathering the necessary resources, the silent 3,300 nautical mile journey of the task force and
ultimately the attack itself. From a tactical standpoint the attack was one of the most ingenious naval
operations in history. With the loss of four U.S. battleships, 180 Aircraft, and 2,400 sailors the attack
can be chalked up as a "win" for Japan. But since the surprise attack was conducted without a formal
declaration of war, it may have been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This set off alarms in D.C. because of the fact that General Tojo is a militarist, and fears of his
cabinet would be bent on war. But the Japanese maintained diplomatic negotiations with the goal of
achieving an agreement to restore oil supplies. On the American end of the negotiations, Presidents
Roosevelt was more concerned with Japan ending its tripartite pact. Kichisaburo Momura was the
ambassador of Japan in charge of facilitating requests between Tokyo and Washington. He was in
charge of delivering the 14 part message from Tokyo that ultimately relays the declaration of war on
the U.S., just hours before the attack would commence. The delivery of the final portion of the
message came about one hour after the attack had begun, thus making it a violation of international
law. The first wave of 183 Japanese planes initiates the attack at 0600 hours and was concentrated
on Hickam airfield and the flying boat ramps on Ford Island, with the torpedo bombers en route to
battle ship row. The first wave lasts until 0945 with 4 battleships sunk, 8 badly damaged, 200 U.S.
aircraft destroyed and multiple smaller ships lost. A secondary attack is launched as well, with the
total casualty count tallying in roughly 2,400 U.S. personal killed, and 1,200 wounded. A nation–
wide broadcast of the "Sneak Attack" hits the airwaves, rallying the nation

The Shaping Of American Society Dalton Toney Dr. Guerrero English–III March 28, 2016 The Shaping of American Society: The Moon Landing The Moon Landing signified a moment in time that would never be forgotten. Even though it happened decades ago, the world still feels the effect it had on the world. John F. Kennedy had a dream to land a man on the moon, but many people in the nation believed it to be foolish. Case: Right Management Consultants Succeeds by Managing Change Question 1: What are the challenges faced by Right when the downsizing effort no longer is a popular human resource strategy? One of the main challenges that the Right company will have to face when downsizing effort is no longer a popular human resource strategy is quite simply finding a new strategy that will work. In finding a new strategy one must take the strategic approach to HRM. In the strategic approach to HRM there are six key elements that are essential for HR managers to consider: – recognize the impact of the outside environment – recognize the impact of competition and the dynamics of the labor market – has a long range focus – focuses on the ... If Right could improve the qualities mentioned in the previous sentence on their HR crew they will be much better prepared with the tools necessary to combat a changing world. Case: Polaroid–A Hard Landing Question 1: What had been Polaroid's overall growth strategy? How did this affect its HR planning and strategy? Polaroid's overall growth strategy was to be the number one and only instant photography company through the invention of it's own technology in its own laboratories. "Growth objectives are a key part of an organization's overall strategic plan. Almost all strategic plans deal with the size the company wishes to be in the future" (Human Resource Management pg. 110). One of the ways in which Polaroid planned to be the only instant photography company–in turn would also make it the greatest–was through 533 patents. "Polaroid is still characterized by many as a company that hold too tight a grip on its patents" (Human Resource Management pg. 130). Polaroid's strategic plan was always to stick with their one invention, improve on it's technology, and target the sole market. This affected HR planning and strategy because Edwin H. Land did not want to enter other markets; Land wanted Polaroid to be about instant photography. The decision to stay in only one market affected

  • 11. How Does Oil Affect Our Lives Depend On Oil Introduction Most people probably do not think about how much of their lives depend on oil. This profitable commodity is constantly being used around the world, twenty four hours a day and seven days a week. From the scented creams people use on their bodies, to the airline jets soaring above, oils are being used. Oil is one of three major forms of fossil fuels, coal and natural gas being the rest. Fossil fuels began forming millions of years ago in the Carboniferous Period when trees, plants, and small organisms died (DOE, 2015). Eventually the fossils sank to the bottom of many swamps and oceans forming layers of peat (a brown, soil–like, and spongy material). Over thousands of years, peat was covered by clay, sand, and other minerals which turned into a type of rock called sedimentary. Over thousands of years rocks piled on top of the peat creating more pressure. Eventually the pressure managed to squeeze water out of the peat and over millions of years, this mineral rich water turned into the three major fossil fuels that people know and use today (DOE, 2015). Regardless of its proficiency and success, the oil industry has become one of the most unethical businesses in the world. Their blatant disregard for the environment and its inhabitants have continuously put them in the crosshairs of many conservatives and concerned citizens. Seems like a great time to explore the history of the accessory that's fashionable, functional, and fun to wear. Did you know people have been using eyewear to block out the sun for about two–thousand years? The first people to use sun–blocking eyewear were the people of the Thule culture, who were ancestors of the modern Inuit. They wore snow goggles, made of bone, leather, and wood. They cut small slits which only let through a small sliver of light, effectively shielding the eyes from the bright glare of sunlight that reflected off the snow. In the 12th century, Chinese judges would wear sunglasses to hide their expression as they questioned witnesses. These spectacles were made of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People who wore these glasses surely grew tired of pushing them back into place, so English optician Edward Scarlett invented temple–gripping sidepieces around 1730. The first glasses with UVA lenses were made in 18th century Venice. Because they were used by noblemen to shield their eyes from the sun's reflection on the lagoon, these shades were known as "gondola glasses" James Ayscough was the first to start experimenting with tinted lenses in the 18th century. Develops commercial method to polarize light It had been known since the eighteenth century that certain kinds of crystals (clear colorless glasses of superior quality) could affect the direction of light waves. In his effort to develop a method for polarizing light, Land was searching for a crystal that could not only reduce glare but was stable and economical enough to be produced commercially. He conceived the idea of two plates that would absorb the light waves that were not wanted and transmit those that were. He then succeeded in aligning millions of microscopic iodine crystals in one direction, thus creating the first polarizer. Land presented a paper on his discovery at a physics colloquium (meeting) at Harvard in February 1932. In June, he left the university, one semester short of a degree, and never returned. • 19. Geology And Capitalism : Science And Technology On A World... "Geology and Capitalism: Science and Technology in a World of Oil Abundance" The recent drop in the price of crude oil by more than half since June 2014 involved complex causes, but much of the problem stemmed from an imbalance of supply and demand. The oil industry thrives on advances in science and technology and historically has proven remarkably adept at producing knowledge and techniques to locate, process, and transport oil but ill–equipped at using its investments into industrial research and development to create market stability. For example, American energy production has boomed in recent years due to advances in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling but those innovations created vulnerability for American oil producers and particularly for smaller independents when world production outpaced consumption and prices dropped. Despite frequent successes in industrial research and development, state intervention historically has trumped science and technology as the best solution to the oil industry's boom–and–bust cycles of capitalism. This paper argues that government power wielded at the local, state, and federal levels offered capitalists greater remedies to balance supply and demand and stabilize markets than did scientific and technological solutions. Large and small oil producers and government bureaucrats who addressed the problem of oil overproduction often invoked the term "conservation" as a solution, but this was a highly contested term ... The Destruction Of Salem By Arthur Miller Armania Heckenmueller Mrs. Hagerty H English II 2EF 11/23/15 The Destruction of Salem Through Greed and Vengeance in The Crucible During the time The Crucible was set, the community of Salem was awry. It did not have the solid characteristics of what a healthy town should look like. Instead there was no trust between people, everyone was watching out for only themselves, and most of the townspeople were turning their backs on the disastrous deeds of the court. The people of Salem feel like they have no one to turn to, so fear crept into their minds and hearts. They developed hysteria which caused the town to slowly disintegrate. This panic allows other people in their community to take advantage of them and manipulate them for their own purposes. In his play, The Crucible, Arthur Miller shows how vengeance and greed destroy the community through the characters of Abigail Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Putnam, and Reverend Parris. Abigail Williams is a great example of how vengefulness undermines the court's authority. Abigail Williams, a girl who has an "endless capacity for dissembling" (Act I), seeks revenge not only through the court system, but through Tituba, her slave, and the girls she manipulates. Jealous of Elizabeth Proctor, who she thought was a "cold, sniveling woman" (Act I), for firing her after learning of her affair with her husband John Proctor, Abigail sees no other method to regain her "lover" other than killing his wife. Soon afterwards, Tibeats sells Northup to Edwin Epps, a "repulsive and coarse" cotton planter whom Northup describes as being devoid of any redeeming qualities.(p. 162). The second half of Northup's narrative is chiefly devoted to describing life on a cotton plantation. He provides detailed descriptions of the processes of planting, cultivating, and picking cotton (pp. 163–168), character sketches of his fellow slaves (pp. 185–190), and gradations of punishment for various offenses (pp. 179–180). As he was periodically hired out to sugar plantations as well, Northup describes the methods of planting, harvesting, and processing the cane in similar detail (pp. 208–213). Though his account reveals the misery and despair of field slaves, like many other slave narratives, it also reflects the wry humor with which Northup endured his situation. For example, in describing the meager rations allotted for each week's subsistence, he quips that "no slave of [Edwin Epps's] is ever likely to suffer from the gout, superinduced by excessive high living" (p. 169). Hubble Space Telescope Essay According to a newsletter sent out by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the purpose of the Hubble Space Telescope was, and is, to gather light from cosmic objects so scientists can better understand the universe around us. Up until the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope, all telescopes were Earth based and had the disadvantage of having to peer at the stars through the Earth's atmosphere. He was a Southern Democrat from Tennessee, when he became president, the Civil War had ended and reconstruction was in its beginning stages. Johnson was then faced with the same problems Lincoln had –– the challenge of mending a broken nation, yet there was a definite difference in the ways Johnson and Lincoln approached the problems of Reconstruction. Johnson was not one of our best or brightest presidents, he did not care about his public appearance and he was not good at making decisions. One of the most illogical decisions Johnson made as president was to start a new reconstruction plan, before his death Lincoln already had a plan set out. Yet Johnson ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was not a good idea for Johnson because he already had a lot of enemies because he was a radical democrat from the South. The south loathed him because he was a democrat and the North loathed him due to his lenient treatment of the South. The North wanted to deal with the South brutality yet Johnson handed out many pardons to the Confederates, pushed to restore civilian control in the Southern states and shied away from implementing voting rights for blacks. From the beginning, Johnson was at odds with the Radical Republicans, who favored radical reconstruction of the defeated Southern states, including military rule and distribution of both land and voting rights to blacks. Later these same people voted to impeach him. Johnson believed that the government should be indulgent with the Southerners. Since that is how he felt he took the insinuative to make a proclamation of amnesty in May 1865, without giving the public any say in the matter. This angered a lot of Democrats and Northerners who felt that the South should not just be pardoned that they should be reprimanded. Then Johnson took it a step further by not only pardoning all of the southerners but, allowing them to have and form their own new governments. This allowed the south to have ex–confederate leaders to hold spaces in the senate, for example, Senator Alexander H. Stephens who was the vice president of the Confederacy. An Analysis of Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio Essay An Analysis of Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio Under the guise of simplicity, Sherwood Anderson weaves an intricate tale of man's struggle for understanding and love in Winesburg, Ohio. Against a backdrop rich with symbolism, he examines man's truths crumbling behind the walls he has built. Anderson employs a strong use of symbolism in "Adventure." Waiting in vain for a self–made fantasy to realize, Alice Hindman sacrifices a meaningful life within society. Alice's "outward existence appears to run steadily downhill into dull meaninglessness, her inward life climbs with increasing intensity toward a climax of desperation and hysteria" (Joselyn 450). Twisted apples, rejected by the pickers, are like the misunderstood misfits rejected by society; underneath they are just as wonderful and yet "only a few know the sweetness of the twisted apples" (Anderson 36). Paper pills, the unspoken ideas of Doctor Reefy, are doses of medicine he cannot prescribe. Another object, money symbolizes the means for freedom or control. Elizabeth Willard's father, on his death bed, gives her eight hundred dollars. Hoping she will "take it and go away" he pleads with her to keep silent about the money (Anderson 225). Ironically, the very symbol of freedom remains hidden behind a wall, although she struggles in silence to reveal its location and purpose. In "Drink," Tom Foster's grandmother finds money and purchases tickets to escape a city filled with "ugliness and crime and lust" (Anderson 215). Arriving in Winesburg, a bustling town different from the small village of her childhood, she wonders if she has made a mistake. Money did not provide the freedom she sought. Money played an important part in Doctor Parcival's relationship with his brother. His brother controlled the family with his money and the bitterness remained with the doctor throughout his life. Jesse Bentley hungered for what money represented: control, a means for "mastering the souls of his people" (Anderson 67). The comparison between the Willard Hotel and the owner, Tom, is another example of Anderson's use of symbolism. The building is aging, the wallpaper fading. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mike Wright wrote, "On both sides of the war, men and women were locked away in dark prisons or held in outdoor camps under blistering sun and freezing snow. They were fed too little and lived and died under primitive conditions." One would arguably say that the Northern prisons might feel a little more at home than the Southern prisons, but this wasn't the case at all, the prisons on each side were both poorly managed, overcrowded and full of diseases. The intentions of the prisons were not necessarily to kill the inmates, but because of poor planning were the prisons filthy. Before us were forms that had once been active and erect; stalwart men, now nothing but mere walking skeletons, covered with filth and intensity of their feeling, exclaimed with earnestness. "Can this be hell?" "God protect us!" and all thought that He alone could bring them out alive from so terrible a place. In the center of the whole was a swamp, occupying about three or four acres of the narrowed limits, and a part of this marshy place had been used by the prisoners as a sink, and excrement covered the ground, the scent arising from which was suffocating. The ground allotted to our ninety was near the edge of this plague–spot, and how we were to live through the warm summer weather in the midst of such fearful surroundings, was more than we cared to think of just then." Sutherland's formulation of differential association theory proposed that delinquency, like any other form of behavior, is a product of social interaction. Sutherland's nine propositions of differential association best explains Malvo's act for the following reasons: (1) Malvo learned how to commit each heinous crime through his social interaction within his intimate group, (2) Malvo learned the techniques to commit each crime through his mentor, i.e. learning the skills ... That is, "delinquent behavior is not an inherited trait but rather an acquired one" (Juvenile Delinquency, p.153). Sutherland claims that criminal behavior/ juvenile delinquency is learned through a youth's relationship within intimate personal groups. These intimate groups are far more influential for adolescents than any other form of communication such as the media. In the case of Lee Boyd Malvo, he had a personal relationship with Muhammad, Malvo's mother ex–boyfriend. After Malvo's biological father left his mother, she often left Malvo unattended and in the care of friends. Malvo's mother eventually abandoned him again which he then went to live with Muhammad, a gulf war veteran, who had became his father figure, friend and mentor. Malvo's longing for a father was replaced by Muhammad and the duration of his time outside of school was with Muhammad. Malvo had only been living in the United States for a year after migrating from Jamaica, before he moved in with Muhammad. One can assume that Malvo became attached to Muhammad because he lacked a father figure as well as companionship in a new country where he felt alienated from family and friends in Jamaica. (Dolan 55) Overpopulation does not just affect the standard of living, but also the environment. Every person on the planet takes up space, but space is needed for farmland and forests. People excrete wastes and pollution that flow into water systems and animal habitats. Resulting in polluted water and killing of the wildlife. Many people cannot do personal hygiene every day because of the status of the water in their country. The major negative effect is the limited and scarce natural resources. Main resources such as: water, land and energy among others scarce or diminished. Populations have become so large that they're draining the resources where there is no sufficient supply for the needs for all. As a result, this has led to depletion of resources, and extinction of species and forestry. (Simonetta 2009). "Most ecologists consider human population growth to be one of the most serious problems contributing to environmental scarceness. Human population growth works in combination with excessive consumption to threaten global environmentally." (Southwick 160). Short–term Memory Affects Color Perception in Context The purpose of the experiment was to study the effects of short–term memory on perceptual observations, determine whether there is actually an independence between color memory and surface color assessment, and to discuss the differences between perception and memory characteristics. Another goal of this study was to estimate surface reflectance of an object from a general measurement of incoming light signals and figure out how it affects memory with realistic scenes and tasks. The interaction implies that during information processing, memory and perception must be studied jointly. There are three steps that our brains take in order for us to make a decision based on the task given to us. Step one consists of a person observing both surface reflectance and illumination. Step two happens when the background color dominates the observes' illumination based on spatial length. Step three, the person will use prior experiences of reflectance and illumination. Step four takes step three, but compares and updates the observation based on whats being displayed in the trials. This allows the observer to make a precise conclusion. Especially since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, new technologies have enabled cultures and communities, initially in the new territories traversed by the Europeans, to expand in populace: "we are forever realizing that the Industrial Revolution has changed forever the relationship between humanity and nature. There is a real concern that by the middle or the end of the 21st century human activities will have changed the basic conditions that have allowed life to thrive on earth." During the Cold War the world was divided into two ideological groups the; US led capitalist "west" and the Soviet union led communist "east". The US–Soviet struggle took many different forms and touched many areas, but never became a "hot war" through direct military confrontation between the two main antagonists. The cause of the Cold War was many things. The USSR and the United States of America were the two leading and most powerful countries of the world but they had many differences. The Americans were capitalists whereas the Soviet Union were communist and they both feared each other. The Americans were afraid of a communist attack and refused to share nuclear secrets with the Soviet Union. On the other hand, the USSR feared the US attack and their atomic bombs. The book provides the reader a deeper understanding of the hardest periods in American history "slavery." When reading Twelve Years a Slave, people can have a better understanding of how slaves were treated back in the 1800s. Northup discussed in details how slaves were mistreated and cruelly beaten by their masters. Masters were heartless; they would beat their slaves till they were close to take their last breath. Many people feel grateful that they were not born during the 1800s. Northup showed different aspects of slavery. He deliberated his days from a free man, to held captive, serving as a slave for three different masters in the south, to gaining his freedom again after twelve years. The first two chapters of Twelve Years a Slave, the author, Solomon Northup, informed the reader about his life as a free man. He was born a free African American in July 1808 in Minerva, New York. He was the son of an originally enslaved father to the Northup family; this is where Solomon received his last name. However, his father was freed after the Northup family moved to New York. While growing up, Solomon helped his father with the farm duties. Also, he had a degree of proficiency in reading and writing.
