Question two
1. Question Two: How does your
media product represent social
groups?
Ali Hunt
2. Gender
• In our thriller, gender is represented
to be stereotyped and somewhat
realistic in regards to contemporary
society. For example in the opening
we see the girl, played by Grace
Peacock under the influence of
alcohol, which arguably causes her to
become more vulnerable. When
considering the point where she
starts to get chased by the
antagonist, her vulnerability is
emphasised further as she becomes a
victim, another realistic
representation of women being
victim to the acts of men.
• In comparison, in our thriller male
power is defined through the
character of the antagonist, played
by Lewis Hunt. This is due to him
being the dominant and more
intimidating character in the chase
scene. This reinforces the realistic
gender inequality between men and
women. Furthermore, although it is
never clearly distinct in the opening,
the antagonist could be chasing the
girl for sexual abuse. This reinforces
the negative stereotype that men are
sexually-driven.
3. Age
• Negative stereotypes of young
people are presented in our
thriller through the props used
for Grace’s character such as the
vodka bottle and cigarette. This
highlights the nationwide
stereotype and rising statistic of
young drinkers and smokers.
• In ‘COUNTERPLAY’ adults are
represented to be more calm
and mature. For example the
costumes worn in the chess
scene reinforce this, along with
the idea of chess being a
mature game.
4. Class
• Regarding class in our thriller, I
believe a distinct binary opposition
can be seen. I believe this is reflected
subtly through the different props
and costumes. For example the two
characters in the chess scene are
wearing suits and drinking red wine
in comparison to the antagonist and
victim in the chase scene both in
casual wear and the victim drinking
cheap vodka. The two in the chess
scene wearing suits is especially
interesting as the costume to reflect
class and status conforms well to the
crime-thriller genre.
