7. Using WISH + PAST to express desire
■ When we want to express a desire, something that we wish to be different from
the reality we can use the structure: Subject + wish + subject + verb in the past.
■ The wish statement is opposite to the reality, so, if the reality is an affirmative
statement, the desire is negative. If the reality is negative, then the wish
statement should be affirmative.
– Reality: I spend too much time playing video games.
– Desire: I wish I didn’t spend too much time playing video games.
■ We always use the past form of the verbs for the desire, including modal verbs.
– I wish I had… I wish I would… I wish I could… she wishes she did… he
wishes they came…
– In formal English, the past form of BE is always “were” in these statements.
