Successful School Leadership
What It Is and How It Influences Pupil Learning
Kenneth Leithwood, Christopher Day,
Pam Sammons, Alma Harris and David Hopkins
Our generic definition of leadership – not
just effective leadership – is very simple,
then; it is about direction and influence.
Stability is the goal of what is often called
“management.” Improvement is the goal
of leadership.
Research Report RR800
9. “The fourth, omnipotence
fallacy, portrays leaders who
think they are all-powerful and
can do whatever they want.”
10. “The fifth, invulnerability
fallacy, happens when leaders
think they can get away with
anything, consider themselves
too clever to be caught, and
even if caught, figure they can
get away with it because of
who they imagine themselves
to be.”
13. Intelligence
“Academic intelligence refers to the
coalescence of memory and analytical
abilities to constitute the conventional
notion of intelligence-the abilities needed to
recall and recognize, and analyze, evaluate,
and judge information.”
14. Intelligence
“Practical intelligence is the ability to solve
everyday problems by utilizing knowledge
gained from experience to purposefully
change oneself to suit the environment
(adaptation), change the environment to
suit oneself (shaping), or find a new
environment in which to work (selection).”
15. Creativity
“Creativity refers to skill in generating ideas
and products that are relatively novel, high
in quality, and appropriate to the task at
hand. Because creativity generates ideas
that others will follow, it is an important
component for leadership.”
16. Wisdom
“An individual is wise to the extent he or she
uses successful intelligence and experience,
moderated by values, to (a) seek to reach a
common good; (b) balance intrapersonal
(one's own), interpersonal (others'), and
extrapersonal (organizational/institutional/
spiritual) interests over the short and long
term; and (c) adapt to, shape, and select
environments.”
21. “I have never been fond of
distinguishing between
leadership and management;
they overlap and you need both
qualities. But here is one
difference that it makes sense
to highlight; leadership is
needed for problems that do
not have easy answer. The big
problems of the day are
Michael Fullan complex, rife with paradoxes
and dilemmas. For these
problems there are no once-
and-for-all answers.”
25. Creativity in Decision Making with Value-Focused Thinking
Keeney, Ralph L
Sloan Management Review; Summer 1994; 35, 4; ABI/INFORM Global
pg. 33
“Decision makers usually think
of decision situations as
problem to solve, not as
opportunities to take
advantage of.”
29. "In some
organizations
that we studied
there seemed to
be an unspoken,
but powerful
belief that once
a decision had
been made to do
something, no
additional work
was needed to
make sure it was
implemented."
