• Its important to consider factors like personality , social ,verbal behavior.
• Consider individual differences
• To get better at it,Try watchingTV,Videos muted and analyze what's going
on?!
• As inTV before judging solely on the body language, It is important to know
‘background’ i.e., characters and the plot….so the above considerations
• As a general rule, people are best at reading facial expressions, and then body
language, and, finally, personal space and touch. 5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
16. Examples
• In Finnish culture, when a person makes eye contact, it is a sign of
approachability. By contrast, when a person makes eye contact, it is
considered to be an expression of anger for the Japanese.
• To give another example, in western culture, a person who feels
comfortable with you will lean forward toward you and square his face and
body directly toward you.
• Note that while some physical expressions of emotion vary from culture to
culture, some research suggests that certain expressions of body language
are universal across cultures. This is especially true for the communication of
dominance and submission. For example, across different cultures, a
lowered posture indicates submission. 5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune

• Words account for less than 10% of a message’s impact.The rest
comes from non-verbal cues.
• Body language is hard to fake and even someone who has
developed a good understanding of the importance of gestures
and gesticulations cannot completely disguise their own
thoughts.

controlled by the subconscious and are involuntary

21. Misleading about body language
• Symbolism: all body communication is symbolic expression.
People with a fondness for psychoanalytic (Freudian) ideas love to
interpret explicit behaviours as manifestations of (often unconscious) desires
and behaviours.
Some nonverbal cues are symbolic of unconscious desires, hopes, and
urges but many, probably most are not.
• You can read people like a book (Decoding nonverbal language is easy)
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
22. Misleading about body language
• Power (Bodily communication is always more powerful)
"Seventy percent of the communicative power of a message is sent
nonverbally“
Yet words have extraordinary precision. For example the power of poetry to
move individuals. Also for example politicians depend upon their script writers
and compensate alone by their nonverbal charm.
• Controllability (We can control all the messages we send)

23. Conclusion
• It is not an science.
• It can be auxiliary tool but not the main tool.
• Body language will continue to be an area of serious research as
well as great interest to the general public.

In an interesting conversation, their eyes remain focused on their partner's face 80% of the time also focus on the eyes for a few minutes, then move down to the nose or lips, then back up to the eyes. They may look down at table every once in a while, but they always return to meeting the other person's eyes.
Continous eye contact is not good
