What is body language?
• It’s a type of a non verbal communication
• Important aspect of face to face communication
• It’s a communication by movement or position, particularly facial
expressions, gestures and the relative positions of a speaker and listener. It
may be the message being conveyed or it may add layers of meaning to the
spoken words.(BBC drama school)

Types
• Eye language
• Body position
• Gesture and Movement

Eye language
• Pupils: Dilating indicates ‘interested’
• Eye contact
• Crying(sad and happy both)
• V shaped eye bros
Expresses anger
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Eye language
• Blinking: More than 6-8/ min indicates increased attention (or attraction :p)
• Eye Direction
• Winking
• Sign of flirting In western countries
• Considered rude and inappropriate in asian countries
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Body Position
• Torso Position: straight indicates confidence and good health
• Legs: Crossed legs-Closed, not interested

Body Position
• Feet:Tapping indicates anxiety and irritation
• Head:
1. straight head: Good for conversation
2. Looking up: Either thinking or avoiding
3. Looking down : Possible embarrassment
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Body Position
• Space:Taking up more space indicates dominace
Personal space-45cm
Friend zone-1m
Stranger: more than 1m
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Gestures and Movement
• Walking :Walking while presenting can make talk more interesting
Also unnecessary walking can make it a distraction
Walking tall is masculine in behavior
• Fidgeting; Sign of anxiety, boredom.
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Gestures and movements
• Handshakes
1. Taking control
2. Giving control
3. Glove handshake
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Gestures and Movement
• Using of hands
1. Submissive palm
2. Dominant palm
3. Aggressive palm
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Gestures and Movement
1. Steeple: Higher, more the confidence
2. Frustration and fear: gripping
3. Confidence
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Gestures and movements
• Smile: Real, eyes gets wrinkled
• Touching: Depends upon power seniority
• Shoulder shrug: Person is not understanding anything
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Vocal effects
• The person will speak faster and more high-pitch when accessing visual
information than when accessing auditory information.
• When accessing kinesthetic person will speak with a lower, slower tone of
voice.
• Higher pitch: interested
• Lower Pitch: Not interested
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Some Caution
• Everyone is unique thus the body language
• Its important to consider factors like personality , social ,verbal behavior.
• Consider individual differences
• To get better at it,Try watchingTV,Videos muted and analyze what's going
on?!
• As inTV before judging solely on the body language, It is important to know
‘background’ i.e., characters and the plot….so the above considerations
• As a general rule, people are best at reading facial expressions, and then body
language, and, finally, personal space and touch. 5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Examples
• In Finnish culture, when a person makes eye contact, it is a sign of
approachability. By contrast, when a person makes eye contact, it is
considered to be an expression of anger for the Japanese.
• To give another example, in western culture, a person who feels
comfortable with you will lean forward toward you and square his face and
body directly toward you.
• Note that while some physical expressions of emotion vary from culture to
culture, some research suggests that certain expressions of body language
are universal across cultures. This is especially true for the communication of
dominance and submission. For example, across different cultures, a
lowered posture indicates submission. 5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Haptics is any form of interaction involving touch
Proxemics is the branch of knowledge that deals with the amount of space
that people feel it necessary to set between themselves and others
Kinesics is the study of the way in which certain body movements and
gestures serve as a form of non-verbal communication.
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Body language for HRME
• Words account for less than 10% of a message’s impact.The rest
comes from non-verbal cues.
• Body language is hard to fake and even someone who has
developed a good understanding of the importance of gestures
and gesticulations cannot completely disguise their own
thoughts.
• It’s because some elements of behavior that will remain
controlled by the subconscious and are involuntary
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Applications of Body language in HRME
• While interviewing candidates
• Assessing the employers
• Maintaining good work culture
• Looking for health troubles, both physical and mental
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Importance in personal life
• Career growth
• Better relations
• Positive attitude
• We all are amateur psychologists wanting to get better
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Misleading about body language
• Symbolism: all body communication is symbolic expression.
People with a fondness for psychoanalytic (Freudian) ideas love to
interpret explicit behaviours as manifestations of (often unconscious) desires
and behaviours.
Some nonverbal cues are symbolic of unconscious desires, hopes, and
urges but many, probably most are not.
• You can read people like a book (Decoding nonverbal language is easy)
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Misleading about body language
• Power (Bodily communication is always more powerful)
"Seventy percent of the communicative power of a message is sent
nonverbally“
Yet words have extraordinary precision. For example the power of poetry to
move individuals. Also for example politicians depend upon their script writers
and compensate alone by their nonverbal charm.
• Controllability (We can control all the messages we send)
5/3/2016HRME 2016, College of engineering pune
Conclusion
• It is not an science.
• It can be auxiliary tool but not the main tool.
• Body language will continue to be an area of serious research as
well as great interest to the general public.
