original schedule. By the end, 123 countries were

• It covered almost all trade, from toothbrushes to
pleasure boats, from banking to
telecommunications, from the genes of wild rice
to AIDS treatments.
• It was quite simply the largest trade negotiation
ever, and most probably the largest negotiation of
any kind in history.
2. •To reduce agricultural subsidies.
•To lift restrictions on foreign investment.
•To begin the process of opening trade in services like
banking and insurance.
Goals of Uruguay Round
3. Doha Round
•The Doha Round is the latest round of trade negotiations among
the WTO membership.
•Its aim is to achieve major reform of the international trading
system through the introduction of lower trade barriers and
revised trade rules.
•The work programme covers about 20 areas of trade. The
Round is also known semi-officially as the Doha Development
Agenda as a fundamental objective is to improve the trading
prospects of developing countries.
4. Goals Of Doha Round
•The Doha ministerial Declaration provided the
mandate for the negotiations, including on
agriculture, services and an intellectual property
topic, which began earlier.
•In Doha, ministers also approved a decision on how
to address the problems developing countries face in
implementing the current WTO agreements
5. Role of India in WTO
•India's participation in an increasingly rule based system in
the governance of international trade is to ensure more
stability and predictability, which ultimately would lead to
more trade and prosperity for itself and the 149 other nations
which now comprise the WTO.
•India also automatically avails of MFN and national
treatment for its exports to all WTO members.
•According to the WTO Secretariat Report, along with the
policy statement by the Government of India, India is
expected to snatch most of the business deals that are
presently catering the developed nations which includes
major service based industries like telecom, financial
services, infrastructure services such as transport and power.
