A. Conventions and Regulations
Thefourmost importantpillarsofthe globalmaritimeregulatorysystems are: SOLAS, MARPOL,STCW,ILO-MLC.
· SOLAS= Safety ofLifeat Sea,TheInternationalConventionforthe Safety of Life at Sea whichadoptedon1
November1974.SOLAS promoting safetyoflifeatsea by creatingacommonagreementandruleswhichapply
to all shipsunderthe ContractingGovernment’sFlagofStates.
SOLAS are coveringregulationsregarding,butnot limitedto, Life Saving Appliances(LSA), FireFightingEquipment
(FFE),GlobalMaritimeDistressandSafety System (GMDSS),InternationalShipandPort FacilitySecurity(ISPS),
InternationalSafety Management(ISM),InternationalMaritimeDangerousGoods(IMDG),Safetyof Navigationetc.
· ISM Code= InternationalSafetyManagement,isthe standardfor establishingsystem for the safe management
andoperationof the vessel andfor pollutionprevention.With obeying this code,it makesthe shipa saferplaceto
work, protectstheseaand marineenvironment,andclearlydefinesthejob asseaman.
· LifeSaving Appliances(LSA)code=provideinternational standardsforlife-savingappliances,alsocontains
recommendationontestingof life-savingappliances.
Exampleof personallife-savingapplianceslikelifebuoys,lifejacket,immersionsuitanti-exposuresuitsandthermal
protective aids;Visual aids: parachuteflares,handflares andbuoyant smokesignal;survival craft: liferafts and
lifeboat;rescueboats; launchingandembarkationappliances;andgeneralalarm andpublic addresssystem.
· FireSafetySystem(FSS) code=to provide internationalstandardsofspecific engineeringspecificationsforfire
safety systems requiredbychapterII -2 of the SOLAS. Theregulationcoveringthestandardandspecificationof:
InternationalShoreConnection,Personnelprotectionagainstfire,portablefire extinguishers,fixedfire-extinguishing
systems, Firedetectionandalarm systems, emergencyfire pumps,andarrangementofmeansof escape.
· Global MaritimeDistressandSafetySystem(GMDSS) =to provide an effective searchandrescuesystem ona

· International MaritimeDangerousGoods(IMDG)code =Theregulationstoimprovethe safe carriageand
transport of dangerousgoodsinorder to prevent injuryto person, damagetoshipsand cargoes,andto prevent
harm to the marineenvironment.TheexampleofIMDG:Explosives material,Flammablegases,flammableliquids
andsolids, oxidizingsubstances,toxic andinfectioussubstances,radioactivematerial,corrosivesubstances,
miscellaneousdangeroussubstancesandenvironmentallyandothermarinepollutants.
· CollisionRegulation (COLREG)=Regulationsandrulesfor the purposeof preventing collisionsatseabetween
two vessels or more.COLREG becometheInternationalNavigationRules,andweshall followit to have a safe
navigationfor ourvessel. COLREG has 38 Rulesand4 Annexes.

holdand trainingto carryout beforesigningon a ship.STCWConventionpurposesto providethe international
standardsnecessaryfor traininginstitutesand trainersto developskills andcompetenciesforseafarer.
· International Labor Convention (ILO)–Marine Labor Convention MLC2006=An Internationalconvention
whichwasadoptedonFebruary2006at Geneva. Thisconventionprotectstherights andfreedomsapplicablefor
seamanasworker onship. Thisconventioniscoveringworkinghoursandminimumresthours, minimum wages,
employmentagreement,accommodationandrecreationalfacilitiesonboard,foodand catering,medicalcareon
boardship andashore,and socialsecurity.
· Marine Pollution (MARPOL)=An Internationalconventionthat aimedtopreventing andminimizingpollutionin
marineenvironmentbyshipsfrom routineoperationsoraccidents.MARPOLhassix annexeswhichpreventing
pollutionfrom:Oil,NoxiousLiquid,HarmfulSubstancesinPackageForm,Sewage,Garbage,andAir Pollution.

B. LIFESAVING APPLIANCE&FIREFIGHTINGEQUIPMEN
Cadet Project: Safety
· LIFEJACKET =Provide supportand buoyancyfor personin the water, so they willstaying afloat.
· Immersionsuits = Highlyvisible waterproofmaterialsto keepwearerdry whenin the water. This
suit keeps the wearer’sbodyheat, so that the bodytemperaturewillnotgoingdownin the coldwater. Becauseof
doesn’thave buoyancymaterial,the use of immersionsuitusuallytogetherwith lifejacket.
· Thermal ProtectiveAid (TPA)= awaterproof ‘body-warmingcoat’whichhelpthewearerto recovertheir body
heat. TheTPAmustcover the wholebody, exceptthe face.

visual and radioaidto navigation. It willbe placedasclosetothe wreckaspossible.
