- The document analyzes investment patterns on the Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) during February-May 2020, a period when the market was closed for 8 weeks due to COVID-19.

Report
Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) resumed trading on Sunday May 10th
, 2020 after it was
suspended for eight weeks (since March 17, 2020) in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic
and a prevailing weaker market sentiment. The ASE general index dropped 4.9% in the
last two sessions before trading was suspended.
This update of Ahli Bank “Investment Patterns” report exposes the unfolding changes in
investment activities on the ASE during the period leading to market closure (mid-March)
as well as for the period following the opening of the market (early May).
In particular, investment patterns associated with the various nationality groups active on
the ASE, namely; local, regional and international investors are highlighted separately
during February, March and May to allow for a comparative view with respect to
changing market sentiment among the investor groups, thus providing an overall
perspective of changing investment patterns during the said period.

The report aims to track investment patterns as they prevail in accordance to the trading activities associated
with the various nationality groups active in ASE.
ASE Trading
Local investors
• Bought ASE shares valued at JD 111.459 million,
while selling JD 84.360 million
• Resulting in a positive investment of JD 27.098
million (Compared to a positive investment JD
3.660 million recorded during January 2020)
Regional Investors
• Bought shares amounting to JD 12.346 million,
opposed to selling JD 20.049 million of ASE shares
• Resulting in a negative investment JD 7.703
million. (Compared to a negative investment JD
10.471 million recorded during January 2020)
International investors
• Bought shares worth JD 1.307 million, and have
sold JD 20.702 million of ASE shares
• Resulting in a negative investment of JD 19.394
million. (Compared to a positive investment of JD
6.811 million shown during January 2020)
After examining the number of transactions executed during
February 2020, it was found that Jordanian investors were the
most active as they have executed 89.60% of all transactions,
followed by Palestinian investors with a share of 3.85% and
American investors with a share equaling to 1.98%.
ASE Ownership
Local investors hold 51.74% of ASE’s total market cap, while
Regional investors hold 33.75% of ASE’s total market cap,
leaving International investors with a share of 14.51%.
With reference to the top ASE nationalities according to
ownership, the Saudi Arabian ownership in ASE ranked second
after Jordanians, owning 6.84%, while Kuwaiti ownership came
in third place with an ownership of 4.94% of ASE market value.

• Bought shares amounting to JD 4.615 million,
opposed to selling JD 4.290 million of ASE shares
• Resulting in a positive investment JD 325
thousand. (Compared to a negative investment JD
7.703 million recorded during February 2020)
International investors
• Bought shares worth JD 498 thousand, and have
sold JD 5.550 million of ASE shares
• Resulting in a negative investment of JD 5.052
million. (Compared to a negative investment of JD
19.394 million shown during February 2020)
After examining the number of transactions executed during
March 2020, it was found that Jordanian investors were the
most active as they have executed 88.84% of all transactions,
followed by Palestinian investors with a share of 4.16% and
American investors with a share equaling to 4.04%.

Local investors hold 52.52% of ASE’s total market cap, while
Regional investors hold 32.68% of ASE’s total market cap,
leaving International investors with a share of 14.80%.
With reference to the top ASE nationalities according to
ownership, the Saudi Arabian ownership in ASE ranked second
after Jordanians, owning 6.72%, while Kuwaiti ownership came
in third place with an ownership of 4.70% of ASE market value.

active as they have executed 75.67% of all transactions,
followed by American investors with a share of 16.13% and
Palestinian investors with a share equaling to 3.71%.

Local investors hold 52.53% of ASE’s total market cap, while
Regional investors hold 32.81% of ASE’s total market cap,
leaving International investors with a share of 14.66%.
With reference to the top ASE nationalities according to
ownership, the Saudi Arabian ownership in ASE ranked second
after Jordanians, owning 6.60%, while Kuwaiti ownership came
in third place with an ownership of 4.86% of ASE market value.
