3. Land and water are the basic elements of life
support system on our planet. Throughout
human history, all great civilizations flourished
where these resources were available in plenty
and declined or perished with the depletion of
these resources. Land is a physical entity in terms
of its topography and spatial nature. Land
comprises natural resources such as the soils,
minerals, water and biota. These components are
organized in ecosystems which provide a variety
of services essential to the maintenance of the
integrity of life-support systems and the
productive capacity of the environment.

What is land
4. Land Constraint:
In recent decades, the world's population has
been growing rapidly and therefore there is an
increasing demand of land for housing, farming
and the building of industries. We say that the
demand for land is increasing. However, the total
amount of land available in every country is
limited. Thus, there is scarcity of land or shortage
of land to be developed for various uses. As a
result, there is a limit to the amount of land we
can develop for various uses. We refer this as land
constraint

Rise of sea water due to climate change
Increase of population and settlements,
Decrease of crop land,
Problem of farm mechanization

7. Reasons for Land Constraint
Land constraint occurs when there is insufficient of land
We need to have land for residential houses, factories, malls, offices, etc.
As we use up the land, we have little left more and land constraint occurs

8. Reasons for Land Constraint
There are 2 main reasons of land constraint:
a)Rising demand for land
Population growth
Increasing demand for housing
Growth of industries
Development for transport systems
Increasing demand for arable land
Increasing demand for recreational spaces
b)limited supply of land

9. Rising demand for land
Population Growth
As a result of rapid population
growth, more land is needed for
human activities
However, all areas have the
maximum number of people
that can support without
straining its supply of
Population
resources for future use

10. Increasing demand for housing
A growing population will lead to
an increase in demand for
housing.
More land will have to be used to
build houses for people
Rising demand for land

11. Rising demand for land
Growth of industries
A way to do so is by
developing more
manufacturing industries
and businesses.
To expand these industries,
more land is needed.
The need to provide jobs for
a growing population is an
important concern for
countries worldwide.

12. As country develops, roads and railways have to be
built.
• A good transport network is important for the
movement of goods and raw materials, as well as to
enable workers to travel between their homes and
workplaces.
In some cities, over 20 % of the total land area is set
aside for transport such as roads, railways and

13. Increasing demand for recreational spaces
Rising demand for land
• With more people, more recreational spaces will have to
be provided. Land is needed for swimming pools, parks,
golf courses & theaters.

14. Limited supply of land
Land makes up only 30 % of the Earth's surface. Areas like swamps, marshes and
low-lying coastal areas are flooded with water, while deserts are too dry. Land can
also be damaged through mining or poor farming practices.
• Suitable for human uses, not all of it is available as they may be reserved for
certain uses, like water catchment areas. These are usually areas of forest that
collect and rainwater into reservoirs.
Land is also set aside for military purposes- like training areas for soldiers.
That leaves a limited area of land for other purposes like industry and housing

15. In order to allow for land to meet needs of more users,
countries develop mixed land use projects where
combination of shopping malls,offices,houses, hotels
in one area.
Various land uses are usually packed in a small area,
linked by pedestrian walkways and escalators.
