Breakfast
Ø The Word means “break a fast (period of time when food is
not eaten)”. We have been 8 hours without food, our body
needs energy!
Ø It is one of the most important meals. It is proven that kids
do not respond the same way when they do not have
breakfast because of the glucose needed for brain!
Ø If one can not stand a lot of food together
take in parts.
Ø Eat something small and then, a bit later eat some more!
Nutritive value of food
In cell mitochondria there is cell respiration.
There is an aerobic respiration (with O2)
anaerobic respiration (without O2)
in every cell: 02 + nutrient = “energy” (ATP) + H2O + CO2
Many types of energy:Mechanical energy movement
Heat energy keeps body temperature
Chemical energy metabolic reactions
Electrical energy transmission of nerve impulses
There should be: Energy input = Energy output (The same as
with water)
There should be a balance if not we are going to be too skinny or
too fat!
sedentary
Total metabolism = Basal metabolism + activity active
Very active
Total metabolism = (aprox. 1000 /1200kcal) + ?
Basal metabolism: is the energy our body needs to function well
(heart, liver, lungs, brain, etc, they keep on working. When we are
sleeping for example, our body uses only the energy for basal
metabolism, without any more added for activity.
1 kcal=energy needed to raise the temp of 1g of pure water in 1ºC
Energy in food
1 gram of carbohydrates = 4 Kcal
1 gram of protein = 4kcal
1 gram of fats = 9 Kcal
Vitamins
Minerals do not turn into energy
Fiber
Water
