Innerseal penetrates deep into the capillaries, micro cracks and pores. A reaction then takes place between salts and minerals to form a very hard calcium silicate hydride. This results in a crystalline structure that stops the transport of water but lets vapours pass through (diffusion). Because the protection is deeply seated, it is substantially more insensitive to external influences such as abrasion and impacts
2. 1. THIS IS HOW IT WORKS
Why concrete is not watertight.
Concrete consists in the main of cement, gravel/shingle, sand, water and air. During the hardening
process, the concrete is dewatered, which results in an interconnected fine-mesh network of
small channels and holes - a capillary system. A fully hardened concrete contains some 20% air.
The higher the proportion of water that is used in the concrete mix (measured in WCR, water-
cement ratio) the more porous and more air the fully hardened concrete has.
Cracking occurs in all concrete but in different degrees and scope. The plastic shrinkage is
assumed to be due to two simultaneous transports of water in the concrete mass. Partly
dewatering (water transport from the inside of the concrete to the surface) and partly
evaporation (water departing from the surface). When the evaporation exceeds the dewatering,
the surface dries out and the risk for cracking increases. In some cases, the result is visible to the
naked eye and in other cases a microscope is needed. If a fine water mist is sprayed over the
concrete surface, the micro cracks usually appear clearly during the drying process.

3. When concrete is exposed to water or other liquids, it is absorbed by the concrete’s capillaries,
micro cracks and cracks by means of the capillary action. The narrower the capillaries - the greater
the capillary action. The transport takes place both horizontally and vertically, far into the
structure.
This is how Innerseal works
Innerseal penetrates deep into the capillaries, micro cracks and pores. A reaction then takes place
between salts and minerals to form a very hard calcium silicate hydride. This results in a
crystalline structure that stops the transport of water but lets vapours pass through (diffusion).
Because the protection is deeply seated, it is substantially more insensitive to external influences
such as abrasion and impacts.
Below are two physical experiments that demonstrate Innerseal’s ability to penetrate deep into
micro cracks. One concrete cube is treated from the top (e.g. floor) and one from underneath
(e.g. ceiling). The micro cracks are filled all the way and sealed, approx. 200 mm. The average
penetration depth is measured at 30 mm. The tests were conducted in 2013 by CBI (Cement &
Betonginstitutet, SE) and the XRF measurement by BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung
und -prüfung, DE).

pulverized and mountain tions arise.Controll forms a profound acid-resistant protection of
concrete, thus preventing the acids to penetrate.
TATA COATINGS AND PAINTS
To prevent the ingress of water and the harmful liquids are often used diffusion membrane
coatings as such. bitumen and epoxy. If there is a risk of rising moisture from underneath (eg floor
plate), the risk is high that they delaminate, gas bubbles arising and bursting. And damaged
coating by impact or abrasion ingress of water and noxious liquids into which then can not leave
by diffusion. The sustained high moisture content in the concrete, then helps a hidden escalating
claims process. Controll creates a diffusion and integrated protection of the concrete which is
insensitive to rising damp and very resistant to impact and abrasion. The surface is additionally
inspectable.
Products from KOMSOL are natural, ecological, completely harmless and colorless products, and
they do not alter either the condition or the color of the material surface on which they are
applied. They are accredited by the ECO certificate for using it in potable water deposits for

KOMSOL trades and applies a new generation of products obtained by the application of
nanotechnology, and specifically developed to provide a final solution to the durability and
waterproofing needs of concrete and materials with a certain level of porosity, used in
construction
ORIGIN OF APPLIED PRODUCTS
The origin of the products comes from the implementation of the concrete supporting pillars
located in oil platforms in the North Sea, submerged in the sea and exposed to erosion and
environmental conditions absolutely adverse to concrete and steel.

7. Although we work with different products, we have a star product called CONTROLL® INNERSEAL.
CONTROLL® INNERSEAL, is a composite of several SILICATES, combined with a catalyst of 84
minerals, very powerful, which is what makes it penetrates for 72 hours about 20 cm, more than
any other product on the market, which is perfectly confirmed by certified laboratories and EC
mark.
With CONTROLL® INNERSEAL we provide a solution that can waterproof and seal open diffusion
(allowing breathability), because it is able to carry out the before mentioned penetration, first
because its particle is larger than 0.7 nanometers and because the physical-chemical processes
(liquid state - gel solid - solid glass dust) through which it will go through to get its maximum
penetration through the element applied at 15 days.

8. HOW CAN THE CONCRETE RESISTENCE BE STRENGTHENED WITH CONTROLL
® INNERSEAL?
Soluble sodium silicates are used differently in the cement industry. For example, they act as
accelerators in cement products for fast drying; they can be added in different ways in the cement
waste; or they are used as moisture reducing agents in the brick production process.
CONTROLL® INNERSEAL takes advantage of the valuable properties of soluble sodium silicates in
their sealer function of concrete. Unlike other sealants which act as a physical barrier layer (i.e.
epoxy, polyesters, polyurethanes, acrylics, vinyl), CONTROLL ® INNERSEAL penetrates deep into
concrete and reacts with free calcium in concrete, generating silicate gels of hydrated calcium
with the following formula:
Na2SiO3 + y H2O + x Ca(OH) 2 : xCaO • y H2O + 2NaOH
This siliceous gel will gradually get moisturized and solidified into an insoluble glass like a
crystalline structure inside the porous and capillary concrete system. As a result of this process,
concrete properties are greatly enhanced, such as permeability reduction, hardness increase and
an overall increase in its durability.
As physical and clear evidence of the mentioned properties provided by the product, at the oil
platforms located in the North Sea we have been able to ensure its protection effect for 50 years,
so far they have spent more than 40 years without any moisture being detected inside.
CRYSTALLIZATION
Through advanced purification techniques with the help of many experts we have managed to
produce the purest silicate product in line with our intended target.
As mentioned before, the average of the particles used in CONTROLL ® INNERSEAL is 0.7
nanometers, and a 20% of them are between 0.1 ± 0.4 nanometers (1 nanometer = 1/100.00mm).
This, together with a special formulation process of 84 elements including calcium silicates
(Ca2SiO4) gives Controll ® Innerseal the best seal in the market for penetration into concrete and
other porous materials.

10. CONTROLL® TOPSEAL is the second of the products exclusively traded and applied by KOMSOL.
CONTROLL® TOPSEAL, is a compound of various SILICATES, whose penetration into the concrete is
about 5 cm. of open dissemination. Its performance is similar to CONTROLL ® INNERSEAL
changing the catalyst for a more superficial penetration. It is a product that produces a high
surface tension which prevents water permeability as well as it produces a stiffening effect on the
surface, which does not allow adhesion of any other element, such as paint, algae, mortars and so
on. It makes the cleaning and hygiene easy by superficially closing every pore and creating a
barrier that we could call "anti-graffiti" and which can be removed with a pressure washer,
without any remainders of the "anti-graffiti" and without the need of re-applying it because it is
permanent and maintenance free (a single application). When applied to façades (monolayer,
facebrick or concrete), if has a heating consumption benefit of 50% and it keeps them completely
dry.

11. SUBSTITUTE APPLICATIONS IN THE SECTOR
In building:
A. In casings: Geotextile sheets are often used together with asphalt sheets, rubber sheets
(EPDM, EDM, ...) PVC sheets, bituminous primers.
The biggest problem of sheets is their placement because they are rolls that must be unfolded
and overlapped with each other. Overlapping is made by heat welding, that is why installation
times are slow and laborious if the casing has many nooks and corners whose laps are not easy to
solve and do not guarantee the perfect operation of these areas.
They also have another problem because any fastening drill for air conditioning equipment,
antennas, etc., drills the sheet and therefore becomes a leak over time.
With CONTROLL® INNERSEAL or CONTROLL® TOPSEAL (if there is not any further treatment,
paving, painting ...) or a combination of both, we replace any system with a fast, effective and
guaranteed placement.
B. Basements: On the walls of basements, in the backfill, it is usually used a bituminous
primer and a nodular sheet with geotextile with a drain tube at the bottom to drain
water filtering through the sheet.
The problem is that the backfill, once placed with mechanical fastening sheets (stapled), is filled
with compacted soil. The implementation of this landfill is done with machinery (backhoes and
rollers to spread and compact) which usually moves or breaks in some area the sheet.
Applying CONTROLL ® TOPSEAL if you can perform on the outside, or CONTROLL® INNERSEAL if it
is inside, apart from its speed, allows a quick implementation of the landfill without having to pay
attention to any sheet. We do recommend its placement in the bottom of the drain pipe
wrapped in gravel geotextile.
In basement slabs, it is often placed a PVC sheet between the ground and the concrete of the
slab. We can replace it later, in the top coat of the slab in certain cases, also saving the placement
of the cracking control mesh, since that function is performed by CONTROLL® INNERSEAL. Each
particular case must be studied to avoid cracking problems.
11
www.acksol.com
www.komsol.se
12. In civil works:
In walls: Idem to the basement walls.
In tunnels: PVC sheets placed by mechanical systems are used in many cases. They are
expensive, difficult to place, and they are drilled when the lighting installations, fire, etc. are put.
The fire legislation also requires that the coating concrete has fireproof fibers to prevent fire in
case the structure collapses.
CONTROLL® INNERSEAL replaces everything with a single application, because apart from
waterproofing, as it is pure quartz with a melting point at 1,713 ° C, it is the best fire-repellant
that concrete may have. In Austria, after a truck fire inside a tunnel and its collapse in that area
after melting the armor, CONTROLL® INNERSEAL was used in its rebuilt to prevent another
disaster.
It is obvious that the characteristics of the products, their operation into the concrete and their
easy application, give them durability, protection, waterproofing and properties which allow
some cost savings on major works, with the advantage conferred by the guarantee offered to the
product and the application.

13. 4. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS AND REAL
INTERVENTIONS
PORTS, TUNNELS, BRIDGES, NUCLEAR POWER STATIONS
Concrete is used in many contexts where strict requirements are set for strength, cost-
efficiency and long useful life. With Komsol’s environmentally-friendly silicate
technology for the waterproofing of concrete, the structure stands protected and
undamaged for decades.
Waterproofing concrete structures for longer useful life
Infrastructure is a major area that includes many different types of structure. Tunnels, bridges,
platforms, foundations; each one of these has its own challenges and problems. A common
denominator is that they all need to have a very long useful life. Infrastructure projects of this
type are long-term, expensive investments that, moreover, fill very important social functions.
This is where concrete waterproofing comes into the picture.
Silicate-based technology for protection of concrete in exposed
environments
When the Condeep platforms were built in the 1970s and 1980s for oil extraction in the North
Sea, the concrete bases were protected with an advanced silicate technology. This has helped the
platforms to remain standing today, completely undamaged, some forty years later. And, despite
the extremely exposed environment in the midst of the North Sea, the protection is still active!
We have managed this silicate technology and further developed it by means of our deep
waterproofing, Innerseal.
However, if we look at the concrete foundations and columns in today’s ports they are, as a rule,
completely unprotected. Thus, many of these structures also have extensive damage, which is
both complicated and very expensive to repair. Because the silicate technology for waterproofing
concrete on which Innerseal is based has been tested for 40 years in an environment extremely
exposed to chlorides and the weather, we can guarantee a maintained protective function over a
long time. We call it long-term.

WATERWORKS AND RESERVOIRS
In water reservoirs and basins in waterworks and similar structures, problems arise
with leakage and erosion. With Innerseal concrete waterproofing, the concrete is sealed
and hardened in depth in an eco-friendly way. Our products are carefully tested and
naturally approved for direct contact with drinking water.
Water reservoirs and basins
Reservoirs and basins suffer primarily from two types of problem: leakage and erosion in the
surface layer caused by friction arising from water in movement. Eventually, the cement paste
leaches out of the concrete, there is a drop in pH that results in rebar corrosion and splitting.
By waterproofing the concrete with Innerseal, both the surface and underlying structure become
stronger and are better to resists friction from the water. With Innerseal, the erosion is stopped
since the cement is bound up and strengthened by the silicates in the product. The protection
penetrates deep into the concrete’s porous structure.Thereby, it gives a deep seated protection
against all types of abrasion. Thus, the plants gain lower maintenance costs and increases its
service life . As a rule, the service life is prolonged by three times by one treatment (see test:
Nordtest + Life 365). In case there is a problem with leaks through casting joints or static cracks,
these are sealed either with our crystallising wash or by injection. Each project is unique,
therefore the state of the plant and surrounding conditions, control which method we
recommend.
Eco-friendly waterproofing for concrete in contact with drinking water
In waterworks and similar activities, high requirements are set on maintained water quality.
Innerseal is an eco-friendly product that is thoroughly tested by several bodies. It is approved for

DOHA WATER RESERVOIR, QATAR
SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS
In sewage treatment plants and pumping stations, substances are handled that are
hazardous to both humans and the environment. The plants, which consist in the main
part of concrete, take a lot of punishment in this tough environment.
Environmentally-friendly concrete waterproofing for sealing and protection
of basins
The content of basins in sewage treatment plants is aggressive to both concrete and the
underlying rebar. With our products and methods for concrete waterproofing, the basins and the
structure are sealed against the leaching of the concrete, chemical attack and mechanical
abrasion from large quantities of water in motion.
With the protection offered by our deep waterproofing products, Innerseal and Innerseal Plus(+),
problems with both leached out concrete and rebar corrosion are prevented and, thus, the
service life of the plants is strikingly prolonged. Our products are developed to seal and protect
concrete in extremely exposed environments. They are environmentally-friendly, completely free
from toxins/VOC and they are approved for use in direct contact with drinking water but protect,
at the same time, the structure from many chemicals such as acids, salts, solvents, alcohols and
oils.

ACID RESISTANT PROTECTION FOR CONCRETE BIOGAS SILOS
Our environmentally-friendly protection treatments protect, and prolong the service
life, of some 2000 concrete biogas silos around the world. The system is tested and
approved by TÜV for its chemical resistance according to the German industry standard
DIN 11622-2 for Biogas and Silage.
Waterproofing for protection of biogas silos and clamp silos
Komsol and our German partner Betonseal GmbH are specialised in protective treatments for
concrete silos used in biogas production. The biomass, from which the biogas is produced,
consists of a mixture of cellulose and organic residual products from farming. The liquid biomass
and the gas that forms in the silo are very aggressive to concrete and the underlying rebar must
be protected.
We treat the inside of biogas silos in several steps using both Innerseal and Innerseal Plus(+). The
result is a long-lasting protection that resists chemical attack and provides a significantly longer
service life for the entire structure. Protection treatments are carried out on new biogas plants
before they are commissioned as well as in connection with the renovation of older plants.

WATERPROOFINGOF PLASTER, BRICK AND CONCRETE FACADES
Moisture in facades can cause major problems, not only by damaging the construction
but also by creating a harmful indoor environment. With the right surface protection,
the facade will remain dry and undamaged longer, which also gives lower maintenance
costs and higher insulation properties.
Waterproofing for protection of facades
Moisture that penetrates the facade, will give both external and internal damages on the
construction material. This results in expensive repairs, far earlier than what would have been
necessary. Facades damaged by moisture also affects the indoor climate for residents, since
moisture is a condition for mold, fungi and other microbial growth. Thanks to our products,
Innerseal and Topseal, we can protect your facade against moisture, contaminants and other
chemical attacks, and at the same time lowering maintenance costs and energy consumption.
Different facades need different types of protection – our specialists help
you
Each facade is unique. Therefore we always start with a thorough inspection, where we review
the existing damage and its cause. We carefully examine the building’s entire climate shell, that is
to say, not only walls but also roofs joints, plates, air-regulators, windows and more. In this way,
17
www.acksol.com
www.komsol.se
18. we can identify shortcomings and decide upon the preparatory work that is necessary before a
protection from moisture can be carried out.
For example brick facades are highly complex structures in the context of moisture problems. For
a waterproofing treatment provide satisfactory protection, the substrate must be free from
defects. It does not work to waterproof or hydrophobe facades that are already damaged. Repair
the damage first, protect against moisture afterwards.
What waterproofing product and method to use depends on the material and condition of the
facade. With our experienced contractors in the industry, and expertise of material and
construction, we will guide you to the most optimal solution for your facade.

WATERPROOFING CONCRETE AND BRICK IN UNDERGROUND
STRUCTURES
Underground and foundation structures are vulnerable constructions when it comes to
damp and water leakage. Usually there is no sealing membrane to prevent damp and
water from penetrating the concrete. In which case it is necessary to waterproof the
concrete to prevent damaged caused by damp.
Protection against penetrating moisture and leaks
Basements, mat-slabs, semi-basement houses, crawl spaces and suspended foundations can all
suffer from problems caused by external moisture. In most cases, these problems can easily be
remedied with Innerseal waterproofing. Innerseal prevents water from penetrating the structure
18
www.acksol.com
www.komsol.se
19. and allows the concrete to breathe at the same time. Application can be done both externally and
internally. Some structures are built using more porous materials, that may need supplementary
measures like drainage, membrane or injection. Therefore, we always carry out a thorough
examination of what is causing the problem before we can propose a solution.
Prevent damage caused by damp
Innerseal is a concrete waterproofing that also can be used for preventive purposes, to protect a
mat-slab and concrete floors against water leakage from internal installations and utilities. Should
there be defects in the sealing membrane, the waterproofed concrete will not absorb water in the
event of a leak. Recovering from a water damage, which normally takes several months, will only
take a couple of days. If there is no moisture barrier under the mat-slab or the basement floor, it
is not possible to cover the surface with a watertight layer like paint or plastic flooring. Ground
moisture penetrates the concrete in vapour form and condenses into water under the paint or
glued flooring, which loses its adhesion from the substrate. By waterproofing the concrete floor, it
is possible to obtain a dry abrasion resistant floor that breathes and is easy to clean. If one do not
wish a gray concrete floor, the Innerseal Plus(+) surface protection can be dyed using the
Ameripolish colour system (25 different colours).

20. CONCRETE FLOORS - PROTECTION AGAINST ABRASION AND
DAMP
Although Concrete floors are reckoned to be enduring, concrete is porous. Thus,
concrete is sensitive to abrasion and damaging liquids, which easily penetrate and
damage both the concrete and rebar. With Innerseal Plus(+) protection, the floor’s
lifespan can be prolonged and create a work environment free from concrete dust. Here
is a few examples of the best ways to protect concrete floors in different environments.
Dry concrete floors that are subjected to tough mechanical abrasion
A concrete floor in a dry warehouse environment may not need protection against damp.
However trucks and pallet lifters, cause serious abrasion to the floor, which creates an unhealthy
carcinogenic dust. Innerseal Plus(+) protects, binds dust and makes the concrete floor harder. As a
result the floor is easier to clean, more scratch resistant and hard wearing as well as protected
from mechanical abrasion.
Polished concrete floors
Innerseal Plus(+) helps improve the grinding and polishing process and provide a long lasting
protection for polished concrete floors. Since polished concrete has pores and is absorbent, it
easily stains. By using Innerseal Plus(+) during and after the grinding process, a sealed, scratch
resistant and easy to clean surface is achieved. To achieve another colour than grey, Innerseal
Plus(+) can be dyed with the Ameripolish dye system (25 colours). Finally, the surface is protected
against stains with burnished Topseal or with Ameripolish stain protection products.
Concrete floors that are subjected to liquids and chemicals
A concrete floor in industrial environments must tolerate considerably tougher effects. Liquids
like oils, glycol, chlorine, liquid acids, chlorides and more, can cause extensive damage. Especially,
it can make the concrete crumble and the rebar to corrode.
In these environments, we recommend a combination of Innerseal waterproofing and Innerseal
Plus(+). The protection, penetrates deep down into the concrete, seals micro-cracks and
capillaries and protects right up to the rebar. This provides permanent protection and cannot be
worn away. After Innerseal have been applied, Innerseal Plus(+) is added which increases the
concrete floor’s abrasion resistance by more than 35%, and gives a durable concrete floor that
endues tough environments.

WATERPROOF CONCRETE AND CLAY ROOF TILES - AND PROLONG
ITS USEFUL LIFE
Rain combined with air pollutants has a damaging effect on roofing materials, including
clay and concrete. With Topseal and Innerseal waterproofing, the useful life of the roof
can be prolonged and underlying construction protected from damp related damage.
Protect roofs with clay and concrete roof tiles - Prevent moss, weathering
and leaks
Clay and concrete roof tiles need protection against both water and acidic pollutants, otherwise
they might leach and crumble to pieces. Both clay and concrete are strongly absorbent materials.
With the damp follow destructive contaminants and risk for frost cracking. Roof tiles saturated
with damp also create an attractive environment for moss and algae. As a result, such growth
creates an acidic environment, which accelerates the deterioration of the roof tiles even more. If
you have moss on the roof, roots can also force their way down and cause holes in the tile, and
thus cause point leaks.
Topseal waterproofing - protecting roof tiles from damp
By first cleaning and then waterproofing the roof tiles with Topseal, the roof will resists both
damp and pollutants. The waterproofing gives a long-standing protection that allows the roof tiles
to breath. The weathering process stops and water is locked out, which prevents the moss and
algae from thriving in the same way. Using Topseal as protection doubles the lifespan of the roofs
and there is no need to clean gutters from moss and sand.
21
www.acksol.com
www.komsol.se
22. Seal the concrete in flat roof - avoid damp/water damage
In the event of rain, pools of water on flat roofs is a common problem. Usually flat roofs are
provided with an elastic sealing membrane, however it is likely that the membrane leaks at joints
and penetration. As a result, underlying concrete absorbs large quantities of water, which remains
in the concrete as the overlying membrane prevents damp from being released. Insead, the damp
spreads further to the roof structure which might lead to rebar corrosion/cracking.
Innerseal deep waterproofing - permanent breathable protection from
damp
By protecting the concrete with Innerseal deep waterproofing before the sealing membrane is
laid, the flat roof is secured from future damage caused by damp. In case the sealing membrane
should leak, the deep protection would ensure that the concrete still resists the water. Thereby,
serious damage to the structure and the interior is prevented.
