1. Malaria
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious
disease of humans and other animals
caused by protists (a type of microorganism)
of the genus Plasmodium.
2. How is it spread?
• Female mosquitoes have malaria in their
saliva. When a person is bitten by them,
malaria enters the bloodstream.
• Infected person shares saliva
• Infected person having blood
transfusion with that someone.
3. How dangerous?
• Affects the behavior of red blood cells.
Affected cells become sticky and will get stuck
in the small blood cells in the body’s organs.
Blood flow to that organ is decreased.
• The not so severe case are fever and
headaches.
• In serious cases coma and death.
4. Why is it commonly found?
• It can be transmitted easily.
• People are careless in preventing puddles of
water being formed in their homes. Thus
mosquitoes breed easily and infect the
people.
• A lot of people nowadays are not saliva
conscious.
5. How to prevent?
• Create an awareness among the people to let
them know the consequences of malaria
• Sleep in rooms that are properly screened
with gauze
• Use mosquito repellent
• Preventive medicine eg. Chloroquine,
proguanil
