2. What is Malaria?
• Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease of
humans or animals caused by
Plasmodium Falciparum.
• Plasmodium Falciparum is a protozoan
(unicellular eukaryotic organisms)
parasite that slowly destroy red
blood cells.

3. • Plasmodium Falciparum
• Plasmodium Falciparum are very dangerous!
• They digest red blood cells and change the
adhesive properties of the cell inhabitants.
• This ^ causes cells to stick to blood vessels and
can be extreamely dangerous especially when
blood flow to the brain is blocked, this is
called cerebral malaria.
4. Transmission
• Malaria is transmitted to humans from a bite
from an infected female Anophles mosquito
(no other type of mosquito is know to transmit
the disease)
• Less commonly, it may occur through contact
with infected blood.
• Malaria is not transmitted
from person to person like
the common cold or flu.
5. Symptoms
• People with malaria usually see symptons 10-
30 days after infecton.
• Early/uncomplicated symptoms of malaria
include fever, chills, nausea, diarrhea, and
fatigue
• If left untreated symptoms may become
severe, such as kidney failure, seizures, coma,
and fluid in the lungs.
6. Treatment and Cures
• Treatment for malaria depends on the severity of the
disease.
• Uncomplicated malaria can be treated with simple oral
medication.
• Severe malraia is treated with an introduction of nutrition
and medication into the body via infusion, injection or
implantation (a route other than the gastro-intestinal tract)
of antimalarial drugs.
7. Prevension
• There are few things you can do to prevent
malaria
• The best way to prevent this disease is by
taking drugs that are used to treat the disease
before, during, and after your trip.
• Reducing mosquito exposure, treating your
home with insecticide, and using sprays that
include permethrin or DEET can also prevent
malaria.

9. Future Applications of Treatment
• Malaria is a disease that cannot be cured with
just medication. Other steps need to be taken!
• Providing nets to families that need them
• Making sure drinking water is clean
• Allowing people to use bug spray when
needed
• There are many more steps people can take to
help this malaria epidemic
