3. Family Life
Louverture married Suzanne Simone
Baptiste on September 3, 1777. They
raised their three boys on Breda
plantation.
4. Leading the Revolution
The Haitian Revolution started with
the Night of Fire in 1791, and
continued until 1803. Louverture led
the Haitians alongside the Spanish.
He changed allegiances to the
French in 1794. Then he created an
independent Haitian militia, to
oppose the French.
5. Death
Louverture was captured by Charles
Leclerc and sent to Fort-de-Joux.
Louverture died on April 7, 1803. He
died before Haiti was freed on
December 31, 1803 by Jean-Jacques
Dessalines.
