The document discusses how the media creator's magazine conforms to and develops conventions of real music magazines. They analyzed the magazine VIBE extensively as it covered R&B music like their magazine. Key aspects they replicated from VIBE and other magazines included layout of text on the cover, positioning of the masthead, and color schemes popular in R&B. Their contents page and double page spread also drew from conventions of other magazines. Overall, the creator aimed to fit squarely within the R&B genre through music selections, urban fashion of models, and evolution of female artists in the industry portrayed.

Magazine Conforms to R&B Genre Conventions
1. Question 1)
In what ways does your media use,
develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?

5. I analysed many magazine throughout the process of creating my media magazine. I believe that my
magazine does conform to the conventions of a real music magazine. As you can see from these images
the main magazine I analysed was VIBE. This was the product this suited my R&B genre the best. This
professional magazine was the product that inspired me the most, as you can see the aspects are very
similar to my product as I wanted to conform to the aspects of a real media product.
An example of this would be the layout of the sell lines, I arranged the sell lines around the model
rather than overlapping the model. I also contrasted the colours to attract the readers attention to the
cover, also using the different fonts and using different sizes to show the importance of certain sell
lines. The position of the masthead was centred and behind the model, similar to VIBE, I also did this to
emphasize the models presence and importance. The colour scheme was red, black and white, this is a
popular colour scheme in the R&B genre and I wanted to conform to this.
The main image on my front cover uses direct address to engage the audience which is what many
professional magazines do. The image also uses high key artificial lighting to emphasize the models
face and facial expression. For my contents page was inspired by Q magazine, I like the colour scheme
and layout of this magazine as it allowed me add lots of information into my contents page. The colours
were also red , black and white which suited my genre.
For my DPS I used a girl group as there were many popular R&B girl groups in the industry such as
‘tlc’. The layout was inspired by VIBE magazine and I kept to using simple cool toned colours such as
grey and white to make the image of the girl group the main focus. I only created two columns to create
a simple effect and stand out to the viewer. The name of the girl group ‘TRINITY’ used large bold font
and have a lasting effect on the reader.
10. As you can see from these screen grabs of I analysed many existing media products.
This really helped me during the process of creating my product as I was able to
conform to many conventions of real media products in my genre. I especially
focused on analysing the magazine VIBE as many of the artists featured were in my
genre and I was able to use this to help me create my product e.g. the inspired
clothing and colour scheme.
DPS ANALYSIS
11.
12. I feel that my magazine clearly fits into the R&B genre as I conform to
many of the aspects of an R&B music magazine. An example of this
would be is that I used the colours red, black and white, while
analysing existing media products I found that these were very popular
colours in this genre and so I conformed to this convention by
replicating it in my media product. My models were dressed in urban
clothing which is one of the main aspects in the R&B genre, many of
my models are female and I used urban street style in the photo-shoots
similar to the girl group ‘tlc’ who were also recognised for their edgy
street style .
I also mention may recognised R&B artists (old and new) throughout
my magazine, I did this to attract my target group of 16-24 year olds
and also attract long time R&B fans. R&B is a male dominated genre
but there are still many female R&B artists e.g. Mary.J. Blige. I wanted
to show in my magazine that females are coming into the industry and
how the genre has changed over time.
13.
14. As you can see from these images my magazine clearly shows the R&B genre. The
clothing in the R&B genre is quite urban and females in the industry dress with the
street style. As you can see in these images I inspired many of the clothing items
from female artists in the industry and therefore used similar clothing in my photo-
shoots to conform to the genre. The models I used in my shoot were made to look
like older R&B artists, I used many female models because I wanted to show the
audience how the R&B genre has changed over time and how more females are
coming into a male dominated industry.
The photo-shoots for my front cover were taken indoors, I preferred to take my
images indoors as I was able to have more control of the lighting. I used artificial
lighting and used a high key lighting technique I did this to emphasize the facial
expression on the artists face and to connect to the reader (direct address).
The mise-en-scene of the photo-shoot was very simple, I only concentrated on the
use of lighting, costume and the poses of my model. The set of my photoshoot was a
plain backdrop as I wanted my magazine to be simple but make a statement to the
audience, I also found this to make the artist be the main focus to the audience. The
costume was inspired my the R&B genre and female artists in the industry to
conform to these conventions.
