2. Beam and Cantilever Beam
What is Beam?
Beam is the horizontal member of a structure. It Carries transverse loads.
or
A structural member whose length is greater than its other dimensions is called beam.
Beam is rectangular in Cross section
3. Functions of Beam
A rigid structural member whose primary function is to carry and transfer
transverse loads across span to the supports which are provided to beam.
Beam Carry the floor slab or the roof slab.
Beam transfer all the loads including itself weight to the columns or walls.
4. Cantilever Beam
A beam whose one end is fixed and other end is free is called cantilever beam
Cantilever beam is the beam which transfers all the load which are applied on it to one fixed end
It has tension zone at the top side and compression zone in the bottom in side
5. Functions of Cantilever Beam
Cantilever beam allows for overhanging construction.
the springboard is a simple cantilever beam, and the cantilever design is
often used for canopies, balconies, sidewalks outside the trusses of bridges,
and large cranes such as those used in shipyards.
6. Advantages of Cantilever Beam
Cantilever construction allows for overhanging structures without external bracing.
It Does not require a support on the opposite side (Although it is also clear from the definition
of cantilever beam)
It is very simple to construct.
For this only one fixed support is required.
7. Disadvantages of Cantilever Beam;
when the beam is loaded at one end, the moment at the fixed end is higher, if
more load is applied, it can break free from the support.
The structures made with Cantilever Beams are not stable incase of
earthquake because they are not earthquake resistant.
8.
9. 1. Cantilever simply supported beam;
It is fixed in a wall or column at one end and the other end is simply supported, it is called
cantilever simply supported beam.
10. 2.Overhang cantilever beam;
A beam in whose one end is fixed and other end is provided simply and some portion of beam is
left free beyond its support on one end.
Or
It is used as Diving board
It is Simple Beam + Cantilever Beam
11. Bending of Beam
Beams while Bending develops tension and compression.
When beam experiences bending moment due to external load it will change its shape and also due to
bending internal stresses will be developed.
Compression will be on the inside of the beam and tension on the outside of the beam.
12. Pattern of Bending of Beam
1. Sagging Bending
When the Beam curved downward then it is sagging
It occurs because of overloading.
