• Originally known as Cassius Clay, Ali changed
his name after joining the Nation of Islam in
1964
• Was nicknamed "The Greatest"
3. David Livingstone
19 March 1813 – 1 May 1873
• Was a Scottish Congregationalist pioneer medical
missionary with the London Missionary Society and
explorer in Africa
• One of the most popular national heroes of the late
19th century in Victorian Britain
• His fame as an explorer helped drive forward the
obsession with discovering the sources of the River
Nile
• After his death in Africa there was subsequent
glorification for him as posthumous national hero in
1874 which led to the founding of several major
central African Christian missionary initiatives"
• Had a mythic status earning reputations such as
scientific investigator and explorer, imperial
reformer, or anti-slavery crusader
4. Henry Stanley
28 January 1841 – 10 May 1904
• Was a Welsh journalist and explorer
• Was famous for his exploration of Africa
and his search for David Livingstone
• Is often remembered for the words
uttered to Livingstone upon finding him:
"Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"
• Inspired Joseph Conrad's Novel, Heart of
Darkness
• One of his missions was to solve a last
great mystery of African exploration by
tracing the course of the River Congo to
the sea
