Principle of effective multimedia learning
 Words & pictures are better than words alone
 Research indicates use of both words and pictures lets
the brain process more information in working memory.
Principle of effective multimedia learning
 MM learning is more effective when learner attention us focused,
not split.
 When related content is presented together in time and
visually, learning is more effective (Mayer, 2005).
 When related content is not presented together, learner
attention is split and the brain has more work to do to
integrate the disparate information.
 Eg. Word and picture presented simultaneously are more
effective than when presented sequentially.
Principle of effective multimedia learning
 MM learning is more effective when learner attention us focused,
not split.
 MM applications that have text and pictures presented in
close proximity (or that may overlap) are more effective than
those applications that present text and pictures far apart on
the screen
 text which is included with video or graphic information, it
should be presented in close proximity to the pictures.
Principle of effective multimedia learning
 Content presentation should be exclude extraneous and
redundant information.
 MM learning is more effective when it includes only content
is relevant and aligned to instructional objectives.
 Learning is most effective when interesting and irrelevant
information is eliminated  the brain’s limited information
processing resources do not waste the brain capacity.
 Important to distinguish between redundant information
Principle of effective multimedia learning
 It should be interactive and under the control of learner
 Research indicates learners learn more when they are able to
control the pace of presentation –when to start, to stop or
slowing down.
 Pacing – can be achieved by breaking presentation into
segment  allow users to select segments at their own pace of
work
Principle of effective multimedia learning
 Learner knowledge structures are activated prior to exposure
to MM content
 Presentation is enhanced when the structures for
organizing the information are activated.
 Activation can be accomplished by allowing students to
preview the content through demonstrations, discussion,
etc.

 MM learning is most effective when the learner is engaged with
the presentation
 Content and format should actively engaged the learner:-
 Personalized the presentation-
 presentations have a more conversational tone and familiar
voice tend to be more engaging than that have a formal
tone.
 Use on onscreen characters (facial appearance (human-like
vs cartoon-like) and gender (male vs female) can increase
student engagement.

 MM learning is most effective when learner can apply their
newly acquired knowledge and receive feedback
 Learners must be provided with opportunities to apply
what they have learned with their everyday life.
 Learners should be informed about their progress 
frequent and immediate
