3. OBJECTIVE
• Know the elements of a newspaper article, and
put into practice the writing skill by creating
one.

4. WRITING A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
Elements:
1. Headline.
2. Byline.
3. Placeline.
4. Lead.
5. Body.
6. Quotations.

5. 1. HEADLINE
•The headline should catch the reader’s
attention and should summarize the story.
Make it interesting!

6. 2. BYLINE
•The byline includes the writer’s name (and
the writer’s specially such as sports, food,
crime, etc.).
•Do not forget the date!

7. 3. PLACELINE
•The placeline is where the story begins.
Where the events occurred.

8. 4. LEAD
•A news article lead is based on the idea
that you need to present the best details
first. It has to catch the reader’s eye and
neatly provide the most important
information about the article.

9. 4. LEAD
•Provide the 5 “W’s” and “H” which it is a
traditional lead attempt to answer most or
all of the key questions.
•Who?
•What
•Why?
•Where
•When?
•How?

10. 4. LEAD
•Keep it short.
•If you have something in the lead, make
sure you will be talking about it in the
body of your article.
•Use words to make it interesting.

11. 5. BODY
•The main news article itself is written
from bottom down. In other words, the
most important information comes first,
with each paragraph giving less and less
details after that.

12. 5. BODY
•You should answer the 5Ws and H right
away in your body. Discuss them in more
detail using quotes.
•The body paragraphs should be shorts
(just 2-4 sentences long).

13. 6. QUOTATIONS
•You need to include things people actually
said.
•Quotations add accuracy to the story.
•Do not forget to add quotation marks!

14. ORGANIZE YOUR PARAGRAPHS
•Par. 1: Report on the Who, What, Where
and When.
•Par. 2: Report on the Why and the How. Be
more specific and add details.
•Par. 3: Provide a quote from a witness,
expert or participant. Add a sentence or
two before and after the quote to explain
who the speaker is and their connection to
