2. What are maglevs ?
Magnetic trains are also called maglev trains.
The first maglev train was invented by Eric Laithwaite in 1984 near
Birmingham, England.
There two types of maglevs :-
1. Electromagnetic suspension ( EMS )
2. Electrodynamic suspension ( EDS )
Maglevs have a high level of safety.
Maglevs are the quietest transportation system in the world.
3. How do the maglevs work ?
In Maglev, superconductive magnets suspend a train car above a U-shaped
concrete guideway. Like ordinary magnets, these magnets repel each other
when matching poles face each other.
Here, both magnetic attraction and repulsion are used to move the train car
along the guideway.
4. Where are maglevs used ?
Maglevs are used in three countries :-
1. China
2. Japan
3. South korea
Maglevs were used in UK till 1995, maglevs are not used now in UK because
the maglev system is expensive.
5. Shanghai Maglev Train
The Shanghai maglev train is the fastest train in the world.
It can travel 430 km ( 267 miles ) maximum in one hour.
The train starts and ends at longyang road station.
