3. Bus stop posters are usually placed at the corner of the bus stop, and are
always portrait due to the shape of the bus shelter. The posters are often
very simple and have large text to draw your attention. They also be more
detailed as the commuters nearby will be able to read it at a closer
distance. Some of the time, the poster will feature only one character from
the film which takes up most of the poster's design, like in this example of
Ice Age 3 and Kung Fu Panda’s poster. They are usually 70" x 48“ in size.
Bus stops allow a great amount of exposure for films as they’re a space full
of people who may come across the posters every day whether they’re
waiting for the bus or walking by, thus the posters are able to catch the eye
of the audience.
There are, however, some disadvantages to bus stop posters as well.
People driving or walking past them in a rush won’t be able to notice them.
Also the posters get regularly changed by the advertising company, there
are issues of vandalism and most of the bus shelters aren’t lighted so the
poster won’t be visible at night.
4. T-side posters are found on buses. 'T-side' posters are shaped like the
letter 'T', though the left end of the overscore is ilongated to stretch over
the side of the bus. The main image of the poster is usually placed within
the 4th box and below as there is more space for an image in this section,
whilst the film title is usually placed in the 1st-3rd box.
6. Posters are also displayed on large billboards, which will be on motorways,
or above busy roads so passengers can see at them as they drive past.
When placed over a highway it is usually 14ft by 48ft.
Billboard posters will have less information because there isn’t enough time
to read it, so it will only have the title of the movie, a catchy tag line and
maybe a date just to make people aware of the movie. Due to their huge
size, they’re hard to miss so the audience effectively gets informed about
the film. Sometimes they’re constructed in a creative or 3D style in order to
appeal to the audience. Despite that, they face the same problems as bus
stop posters as they get regularly changed, might go unnoticed and not all
of them are lit at night.
8. Film posters are also placed inside film magazines for avid magazine
readers to collect. These might be the size of the magazine cover or a one
sheet portrait one-sheet portrait: 27 inches by 40 inches (686x1020mm).
The short coming of this method of promotion is that most people won’t
probably pay attention to the advertisements or will read only once.
10. Multiple posters are on display of films ‘now showing’ or ‘coming soon’
both inside and outside the cinema. They’re also spotlighted so they’re
more noticeable and stand out to the audience visiting.
The plethora of posters surrounding the audience will lead to a lot of
competition so it will be up to chance which film poster will capture the
audience’s attention. Some people will only be interested in seeing certain
films and not others.
