MAY DAY
By Pastor Kevin Melin
When I think of May I think of May Day. One because I have a sister whose
birthday is on May 1st
and I have had experiences which I now call May Day
‘Misunderstandings.’ The first ‘misunderstanding’ came when I was quite
young. I carefully created a May Basket for my kindergarten teacher, Mrs.
Bergstrom, who lived as neighbors to us in Pennock. You know the gig, you
knock on the door or ring the door bell and then run for cover. The lucky
person comes out and is overjoyed when they realize they were thought of
and they pack away the candy and sweets. Yeah right!!
Mrs. Bergstrom came out and yelled, ‘Kevin Melin, I see you behind that
tree! Shame on you for cherry knockin on me!” Then she slammed the door
and NEVER SAW THE MAY BASKET. By the way, Wikipedia says…
‘Cherry Knockin’ is a prank that involves knocking on the front door or
ringing the doorbell of a victim, then running away before the door can be
answered. In other words ‘Cherry Knockin’ is a term for what this was IF it
was NOT May Day and I was not leaving candy. Apparently as a teacher,
Mrs. Bergstrom, had been a victim of this prank before! I went home crying
to my mom about what happened and then mom sent ME BACK to ring the
doorbell AGAIN!! This time I was to stay holding the May basket until Mrs.
Bergstrom came to the door so I could explain. I was petrified! She was
embarrassed. But all ended well.
The second May Day Misunderstanding was when my Alyssa came home
from CCS with a May Day basket. She crept up to the door. I saw her and
snuck out to the porch door. When she knocked, I swung the door open and
chased her to her hiding spot to find a crying, very unhappy little girl because
I had not ‘done it right.’ Alyssa is our 1st
born, who are into rules, you know!
Soo… we had to talk it out and explain things and had apologies. You get the
picture.
Have you ever done something good and right only to have someone totally
misunderstand what you were trying to do? Well, you probably had to do
what was done here, talk it out and share face to face the intentions and the
reason for actions taken.
Well… here we are in May and our church has just birthed a five week
practice of two services. And now the church body is ‘feeling it.’ So I invite
you to dialogue with leadership where needed so we eliminate May
Misunderstandings of our own. Let me reiterate some basics again as to what
we are trying to accomplish with birthing a 2nd
service with a contemporary
feel:

EXPANDING THE VISION…
RENEWING THE MISSION!!
African Mission Sunday
Feb. 24th
(For BOTH worship & adult Sunday
School w/ Lunch following to help kids to
go to Lake Beauty)
February is known for many
things. It is a month to remember
love for those who are closest to
us. It is known for cold and the
dead of winter. But here at
NLECC, February 23rd
, is African
Mission Sunday. We have the
privilege of having old friends and
new acquaintances all for purpose
of sharing how we can have a
significant impact on both the
Republic of Congo and Sudan in
the heart of Africa on the other
side of the globe.
Congo missionary, Pete
Ekstrand, will be here speaking
and sharing on February 23rd
BOTH during worship but also
during the Adult Sunday School
time. Pete Ekstrand actually
worked here at NLECC in the 70s
in youth ministries. It was with a
program through the Covenant
Denomination at the time. Added
to this our church has long
supported him and he has revisited
us on many occasions. Pete will
update us on the Covenant Kids
Congo program where our
denomination has partnered with

 We have an increasing space need in worship which necessitates a 2nd
service or we stop growing.
Simply put, we want to reach as many as we can with the gospel message. Thus two services!
 Once knowing a 2nd
service was needed, we looked at a contemporary service to reach the generation we
are largely missing. This is a missional as well as a strategic decision. We also have tried to make it a
priority that while we pursued this, we would attempt to keep the existing service ‘as is’ so the new
service was not a determent to the existing service.
 We then looked at ways to best offer two services while affecting the least and gaining the most. There
is no way to not affect some. We are hoping with offering extra adult Sunday School classes we
accommodate most.
 Having worship services at two ‘appealing’ hours (9 & 10:30) makes both viable and not one
disadvantaged. Also having both services empty into the lobby at the same time keeps our congregation
mixed rather than two congregations. Having worship back to back also helps our worship music people
who are the most pressed when going to two services
 There are too many nuances of why things were chosen as they were but feel free to ask so you are
informed.
Again misunderstandings are eliminated by talking face to face so pick up the phone or talk to an
elder/council/pastor if and when you need to.
I want to eliminate as many May Day Misunderstandings as possible. 
In His Grip,
Pastor Kevin

As spring is in the air, we will spend the final few weeks before summer talking about friendship,
love and dating with our students. The curriculum that’s being used for the Sr. High is from
www.open.lifechurch.tv. If you would like a copy of it please let me know. The study’s focus is on
choices, consequences (good and bad), and character. There is a short video to go along with each
of the 4 lessons. Please contact me if you have any questions concerning the subject matter. First
and foremost, I emphasize with students that Word of God and parents are the authority when it
comes to rules on dating. Our time with the Middle School students will be spent more on healthy
friendships and good choices, as well as fielding questions on relationships and dating.

Church Happenings…
Sunday School 9:15 am: Children, Youth, and Adults
9:15 Sunday School option for adults:
Jeff Schmitz, Joppa and United Campus Ministry worker, will teach a class called ‘Reaching the World Where You
Live’: Presenting the Gospel works best when you actually live life where you live, worship where you live, and engage
where you live. There are more opportunities for follow up and creating community within your neighborhoods with the
people you regularly see.
The four week course will focus on who Jesus is, who we are and where we are -- including the people who are in our
daily lives. We'll discuss and pray about how to reach the community we're in. Come check it out and let's see how we can
make an impact where we live.
10:30 Sunday School option for adults:
Gary Swenson will facilitate a Ray Vandar Laan DVD entitled ‘God Heard Their Cry.’ Vander Laan illustrates how, in
ancient times, nothing was bigger than Egypt…powerful pharaohs, strong armies, and a multitude of gods. God’s people
were no match against the Egyptians. In this volume of Faith Lessons, discover how God answers the cry of his
persecuted people and proclaims himself Lord to them and their oppressors.

More Church Happenings…
Whether you are an avid fisherman or someone who enjoys watching
the sunset from a boat…this highly enjoyable excuse for
regularly scheduled fishing outings and picnic suppers is for you!
The evenings of fishing will take place between May 27th
and August 26th
. It is a great chance to spend time with your
family or others from church OR to invite someone who you would like to introduce to our church family! You may fish in
your own boat or team up with another team and share boats. We would love to see this become an intergenerational,
outreaching ministry of our church family! Let us know if you need a boat!
League will be held twice a month on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer season. Attendance each week is not
required, but you will want to try to attend as many nights as you can! Be sure to put these dates on your calendar: May
27th
, June 10th
, June 24th
, July 1st
, July 15th
, July 29th
, August 12th
, and August 26st
with a year end supper and celebration
night on the August 27th
.
The cost will be $4/person each night, or $25/person for the whole season. You can have as many people in your boat as
you want, but you must register as teams of two or three. This fee will help cover the costs of the supper which is generally
provided at the Holmen’s home after each outing. There are information/registration sheets at the information center in the
lobby. Call or email John and Paula Holmen at obby@tds.net or 320-894-8038 if you have any questions or to register your
team.

Link Newsletter, May 2014
As I look out the window at the most recent snowstorm, I am reminded of the storms, or
challenges, we all face in life. Each day, our neighbors take on storms: health challenges,
unemployment or the high costs of meeting basic needs. The Link is here to help. April 15th
was the end of the Cold Weather Rule and many households have recently sought Link
assistance to prevent the shutoff of their main heat source.
Here’s a quick story about one of the families that needed some help: A young family with a
newborn contacted the Link with an electric shut off notice of about $1,200. The Link worked
to connect the family to local resources and connect with resources at their home
congregation in Willmar.

When You Think of Lake Beauty...
A couple of weeks ago we asked this question of people
on Face Book. It is awesome that within 24 hours we had
over 100 responses and that the post had been seen by
over 4500 people. When we ask the question of when
you think of LBBC.... There are a lot of memories
associated with camp in the lives of people. Here is a
compilation of what we got in response to the question,
in no specific order...When you think of LBBC...
Home, Heaven, Great Memories, Giving life to Christ/U
turn, Quiet/special ground, Meaningful Experiences, life
changing, transformational, God, Experiences for
Children, Highlight of my ...., Chapel, Other
Activities, Fellowship, lifetime, friendships, community,
family, family camp, staff Relationships, Friends, Best
place ever, Food, ISO, night games, Glad I am a
Camper, Retreats, Volunteering, Polar Plunge, Best Place
ever.
What sparked the question was a conversation that we
have begun here at camp. It is in the area of branding
and we are asking the question what we as staff see
LBBC as, what the attenders of LBBC see LBBC as and
finally what our neighbors around camp see LBBC as. It
is very encouraging to me as we look at where we are
today, things are a bit different than they were a while
back and we are continuing to make strides to improve
the perception, as well as the actual experience. We are
thrilled to be involved at this place and to be a part of
the life transformation that happens as a result of God
being a part of this place.
We are not done with the conversations about branding.
Be watching for more updates about this in the next few
issues of the newsletter.
We need your prayers...
April 29th there is a very important meeting happening
that we are asking you to pray about. Brian will be
presenting the final drawings to the Bruce Township
Planning and Zoning commission. We believe that we
have done our homework and have everything we need
to get the permission we need to make this new Dining
Hall a reality, but prayers are a great thing as we go into
it.

As you have been reading in the recent months, we are
in great need of an addition to the current Dining Hall for
additional dining area as well as additional meeting space
to better utilize camp year round. Also with the addition
of the new Solid Rock Discipleship program the additional
space is critical in a place set aside for the gathering
space for them as well.
We have secured financing for the building, we are a long
ways from having the cash in hand, but we are still
trusting others to come along side and help make it a
reality to pay cash as we build.
If you are still thinking and praying about how and if you
will be a part of making this a reality, now is the time.
We are still $400,000.00 away from our goal. If you have
any questions about how you can help, please don't
hesitate to call the camp, 320-732-3218.
Prayer Warriors
One the best ways to be in support of Camp--staff and
campers--throughout the summer is to keep them all in
your prayers. We believe that prayer is one of the best
ways to encourage and fight the spiritual battle for those
that are participating or in ministry here.
If you would like to be added to the Program Director's
email general prayer updates that come throughout the
summer week, then email Christa at chirsta@lbbc.com to

Work Day and Summer Camps
Spring Work Day is April 26th, 2014. We have lots of
great projects that people can be a part of as we get
ready for Summer. There are also projects on-going
between now and the start of camp that people could
come and be a part of, outside of the Annual Work Day.
So if the 26th doesn't work for you or your group, give
us a call and we will let you know what we have.
Summer Camp numbers are looking good for 2014. We
still have limited space in all of our Youth Summer
Camps and a very limited number in our Family Camps,
so don't delay. Call the camp, 320-732-3218 or email
lbbc@lbbc.com, or better yet, register online today for
Work Day, Youth and Family Camps.
MEMORIAL DAY FAMILY CAMP!
May 23-26, 2014
It's not to late to register for Memorial Day Family Camp!
Come for a great weekend to kick off your summer!
Our speaker for the weekend is John Duball, pastor at
New Day Covenant in Rochester, MN. He is excited to
share God's Word!
Register on-line at www.lbbc.com or call the office at
320-732-3218.

May newsletter

  • 1. 1 | P a g e MAY DAY By Pastor Kevin Melin When I think of May I think of May Day. One because I have a sister whose birthday is on May 1st and I have had experiences which I now call May Day ‘Misunderstandings.’ The first ‘misunderstanding’ came when I was quite young. I carefully created a May Basket for my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Bergstrom, who lived as neighbors to us in Pennock. You know the gig, you knock on the door or ring the door bell and then run for cover. The lucky person comes out and is overjoyed when they realize they were thought of and they pack away the candy and sweets. Yeah right!! Mrs. Bergstrom came out and yelled, ‘Kevin Melin, I see you behind that tree! Shame on you for cherry knockin on me!” Then she slammed the door and NEVER SAW THE MAY BASKET. By the way, Wikipedia says… ‘Cherry Knockin’ is a prank that involves knocking on the front door or ringing the doorbell of a victim, then running away before the door can be answered. In other words ‘Cherry Knockin’ is a term for what this was IF it was NOT May Day and I was not leaving candy. Apparently as a teacher, Mrs. Bergstrom, had been a victim of this prank before! I went home crying to my mom about what happened and then mom sent ME BACK to ring the doorbell AGAIN!! This time I was to stay holding the May basket until Mrs. Bergstrom came to the door so I could explain. I was petrified! She was embarrassed. But all ended well. The second May Day Misunderstanding was when my Alyssa came home from CCS with a May Day basket. She crept up to the door. I saw her and snuck out to the porch door. When she knocked, I swung the door open and chased her to her hiding spot to find a crying, very unhappy little girl because I had not ‘done it right.’ Alyssa is our 1st born, who are into rules, you know! Soo… we had to talk it out and explain things and had apologies. You get the picture. Have you ever done something good and right only to have someone totally misunderstand what you were trying to do? Well, you probably had to do what was done here, talk it out and share face to face the intentions and the reason for actions taken. Well… here we are in May and our church has just birthed a five week practice of two services. And now the church body is ‘feeling it.’ So I invite you to dialogue with leadership where needed so we eliminate May Misunderstandings of our own. Let me reiterate some basics again as to what we are trying to accomplish with birthing a 2nd service with a contemporary feel: May 2014 EXPANDING THE VISION… RENEWING THE MISSION!! African Mission Sunday Feb. 24th (For BOTH worship & adult Sunday School w/ Lunch following to help kids to go to Lake Beauty) February is known for many things. It is a month to remember love for those who are closest to us. It is known for cold and the dead of winter. But here at NLECC, February 23rd , is African Mission Sunday. We have the privilege of having old friends and new acquaintances all for purpose of sharing how we can have a significant impact on both the Republic of Congo and Sudan in the heart of Africa on the other side of the globe. Congo missionary, Pete Ekstrand, will be here speaking and sharing on February 23rd BOTH during worship but also during the Adult Sunday School time. Pete Ekstrand actually worked here at NLECC in the 70s in youth ministries. It was with a program through the Covenant Denomination at the time. Added to this our church has long supported him and he has revisited us on many occasions. Pete will update us on the Covenant Kids Congo program where our denomination has partnered with Inside this Issue 1 Pastors Article Pg. 1-2 2 Youth Article Pg. 3 3 Children’s Ministries Article Pg. 4 4 Women’s Ministries Pg. 5 5 Church Happenings Pg. 5-6 6 Expanding the Vision Pg. 7 7 Summer Reading Pg. 8 8 Community Events Pg. 9 9 Link Newsletter Pg 10 10 Lake Beauty Newsletter Pg 11-13 11 Prayer/Birthday Calendar Pg 14 12 Monthly Calendar Pg 15 Evangelical Covenant Church 208 Main St. N P.O. • 2. 2 | P a g e  We have an increasing space need in worship which necessitates a 2nd service or we stop growing. Simply put, we want to reach as many as we can with the gospel message. Thus two services!  Once knowing a 2nd service was needed, we looked at a contemporary service to reach the generation we are largely missing. This is a missional as well as a strategic decision. We also have tried to make it a priority that while we pursued this, we would attempt to keep the existing service ‘as is’ so the new service was not a determent to the existing service.  We then looked at ways to best offer two services while affecting the least and gaining the most. There is no way to not affect some. We are hoping with offering extra adult Sunday School classes we accommodate most.  Having worship services at two ‘appealing’ hours (9 & 10:30) makes both viable and not one disadvantaged. Also having both services empty into the lobby at the same time keeps our congregation mixed rather than two congregations. Having worship back to back also helps our worship music people who are the most pressed when going to two services  There are too many nuances of why things were chosen as they were but feel free to ask so you are informed. Again misunderstandings are eliminated by talking face to face so pick up the phone or talk to an elder/council/pastor if and when you need to. I want to eliminate as many May Day Misunderstandings as possible.  In His Grip, Pastor Kevin
  • 3. 3 | P a g e ECC Youth Newsletter May 2014 As spring is in the air, we will spend the final few weeks before summer talking about friendship, love and dating with our students. The curriculum that’s being used for the Sr. High is from www.open.lifechurch.tv. If you would like a copy of it please let me know. The study’s focus is on choices, consequences (good and bad), and character. There is a short video to go along with each of the 4 lessons. Please contact me if you have any questions concerning the subject matter. First and foremost, I emphasize with students that Word of God and parents are the authority when it comes to rules on dating. Our time with the Middle School students will be spent more on healthy friendships and good choices, as well as fielding questions on relationships and dating. Church Happenings… Sunday School 9:15 am: Children, Youth, and Adults 9:15 Sunday School option for adults: Jeff Schmitz, Joppa and United Campus Ministry worker, will teach a class called ‘Reaching the World Where You Live’: Presenting the Gospel works best when you actually live life where you live, worship where you live, and engage where you live. There are more opportunities for follow up and creating community within your neighborhoods with the people you regularly see. The four week course will focus on who Jesus is, who we are and where we are -- including the people who are in our daily lives. We'll discuss and pray about how to reach the community we're in. Come check it out and let's see how we can make an impact where we live. 10:30 Sunday School option for adults: Gary Swenson will facilitate a Ray Vandar Laan DVD entitled ‘God Heard Their Cry.’ Vander Laan illustrates how, in ancient times, nothing was bigger than Egypt…powerful pharaohs, strong armies, and a multitude of gods. God’s people were no match against the Egyptians. In this volume of Faith Lessons, discover how God answers the cry of his persecuted people and proclaims himself Lord to them and their oppressors. A couple of weeks ago we asked this question of people on Face Book. It is awesome that within 24 hours we had over 100 responses and that the post had been seen by over 4500 people. When we ask the question of when you think of LBBC.... There are a lot of memories associated with camp in the lives of people. Here is a compilation of what we got in response to the question, in no specific order...When you think of LBBC... Home, Heaven, Great Memories, Giving life to Christ/U turn, Quiet/special ground, Meaningful Experiences, life changing, transformational, God, Experiences for Children, Highlight of my ...., Chapel, Other Activities, Fellowship, lifetime, friendships, community, family, family camp, staff Relationships, Friends, Best place ever, Food, ISO, night games, Glad I am a Camper, Retreats, Volunteering, Polar Plunge, Best Place ever. What sparked the question was a conversation that we have begun here at camp. It is in the area of branding and we are asking the question what we as staff see LBBC as, what the attenders of LBBC see LBBC as and finally what our neighbors around camp see LBBC as. It is very encouraging to me as we look at where we are today, things are a bit different than they were a while back and we are continuing to make strides to improve the perception, as well as the actual experience. We are thrilled to be involved at this place and to be a part of the life transformation that happens as a result of God being a part of this place. We are not done with the conversations about branding. Be watching for more updates about this in the next few issues of the newsletter. We need your prayers... April 29th there is a very important meeting happening that we are asking you to pray about. Brian will be presenting the final drawings to the Bruce Township Planning and Zoning commission. We believe that we have done our homework and have everything we need to get the permission we need to make this new Dining Hall a reality, but prayers are a great thing as we go into it.
