1. COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS FOR 6TH
GRADE MATH CONCEPTS
What are Common Core State Standards and why were they created?
In October of 2010, the Oregon Department of Education adopted the Common Core State
Standards. These standards outline what students should learn each year and were created to
prepare students with skills needed for college and entry level occupations upon completion of
high school. The CCSS provides states consistent learning goals and aligned curriculum to
meet benchmark standards. It also provides a consistent set of standards that allows students
to move between schools and states (Oregon CCSS Fact Sheet, 2011).
Instruction time in our classroom will focus on four areas:
Connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using
concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems.
Completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to
the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers.
Writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations.
Developing understanding of statistical thinking. (Oregon.gov, 2017)
How will the CCSS impact our classroom?
Our class will follow the Common Core State Standards as a guideline for instruction. The
CCSS standards develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These guidelines are
aligned with the Smarter Balanced State Assessments in the spring and will ensure that
students will be prepared for success in these tests (Common Core State Standards Initiative,
2017).
