11. Immersed in the world of art and passionate about it
since his youth, Mr. Alexis de Bernede has always
considered himself an art collector. He established
his own organization at the age of 19 and began
collaborating with artists, collectors, and businesses.
Since then, due to his openness, the caliber of the
network he helped to build, the advice he gave, and
the discoveries he made, his career has grown
significantly, leading to work with some of the most
significant collectors and businesses in Europe and
his inclusion in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list.

and Mr. Alexis de Bernede:
Describe who you are as a person,
inside and outside of the workplace.
I am most likely the most optimistic
and smiling person you will ever meet.
I live for art, and love sharing my
passion. A third characteristic that
defines me is my love for new
experiences, unique encounters, and
spontaneity; which is illustrated by the
projects undertaken by Gismondi &
Darmo, all around Europe, always
creating bigger and more ambitious
projects in fabulous locations and with
ambitious partners.
Describe your background and what
did you do before you started/joined
the company?
I grew up between Paris (France) and
Boston, MA (USA). Before founding
Gismondi & Darmo, I was a student in
the United Kingdom, very involved
with my Bachelor's and Master's
degrees. I studied at the University of
Warwick (Warwick Business School)
in international management and at the
University of Oxford in art history.
I started collecting artwork (limited
edition prints at the time) with my
student job savings when I was 15.
This quickly became a passion, and
little by little, this would become my
life's work. I started exhibiting
contemporary art during my university
studies because I wanted to share my
love for certain emerging artists' work,
and help them grow their market and
recognition.
Tell us about the inception of the
company. How did it all start?
Everything I do is with my childhood
best friend and business partner:
Marius Jacob-Gismondi. We currently
run two activities: (1) Darmo; and (2)
Gismondi & Darmo. Both are very
close but focus on different niches.
First, we founded Darmo, a company
that supports emerging art and brings
historical locations into the spotlight to
help cities, regions, and countries'
heritage become better known and
appreciated.
Darmo was our first success, Starting
from our university dorm rooms (in the
UK for myself and France for Marius),
we started exhibiting emerging artists
in the most beautiful historical
locations we could find. Our shows
would consistently grow, with
outstanding sales every time, and
bolder (yet harmonious) curatorial
choices every time. We then started
collaborating and working with iconic
firms and mega-collectors.
Gismondi & Darmo was born four
years after Darmo and grew naturally
from the needs of our partners and
collectors, who needed services outside
of emerging art. To put it simply,
Gismondi & Darmo helps firms and
individuals grow their impact and
leave a mark in history through art and
culture.
What has made you successful?
What do you value?
I always lead my firm with quality of
work as our main motto—quality over
money. It was our secret to becoming
successful—especially when you build
your firm in one of the most traditional
industries: the art world. We started at
age 19, in an industry where "you can't
make it if you don't have gray hair."
Our approach was to always start with
small-scale projects with new partners,

further projects into an entirely new
dimension. This led us to work with
some of the most iconic firms and
public figures of our time, from Gucci
to Giambattista, or historical castles
such as Chateau Saint-Georges in
Grasse (France) or Ghica Victoria
Palace in Bucharest (Romania).
Which are the major services of the
company and how do they the
company to get ahead in the
competition? What value-added
services does the company provide?
We are among the first (if not the first)
consulting firms specializing in
building ESG-driven cultural
initiatives for corporations. Our
services go anywhere from short term
projects (in-house or off-site
workshops, conferences) to medium-
term projects (art prizes, residency or
exhibition programs, art collection
creation) and work towards long term
goals (creation of a museum, a
foundation, an art collection of
institutional standard, etc.).
Our edge? Our expertise across
specialties (from ancient art to
contemporary), as well as our eye and
taste, which have been praised by the
press and partners, which we combine
with a made-to-measure offering to
ensure that every project embodies our
client's or partner's values and identity.
What are the most important aspects
of a company's culture? What
principles do you believe in and how
do you build this culture?
Marius and I live by the words
"leadership over management." We
surround ourselves with experts and
best-in-class teams—people who shine
through their knowledge and taste, and
whom we push to unlock their full
potential.
What is the significance of
innovative ideas in the company?
We constantly innovate to help our
clients differentiate themselves in their
industries and towards the public or
governments, through art and culture.
We don't revolutionize processes and
technologies; we rather leverage the
best of what tradition teaches us and
add in the flexibility and possibilities
offered by today's business,
technological, and artistic ecosystems.
Give us your opinion on; do
organizations rely heavily on
individual heroics or team
processes?
I'll go with neither, but rather "team
heroics." Let me explain why:
Ÿ One can't go without the other.
Organizations rely on visionary
leaders. "Visionary" to set goals
and "leader" to let team members
give the best of who they are to
bring projects to life; but no impact
can be created without
collaborative efforts.
Ÿ From a PR standpoint, the success
of organizations also depends, in
part, on efficient communication
and communication that has a face.
Ÿ But if I had to go with one answer, I
would go with team processes.
Nothing brings more value to an
organization than teams working
fluidly together, where individuals
unleash their full potential. Perhaps
this should be called "team
heroics"?
What are your responsibilities as the
Founder/CEO of the company?
What is the happiest part of your
daily routine?
Creating impact, and happiness. This is
both inwardly and outwardly facing.
The impact must be internal within my
company, so our team grows and
develops, so our partners' teams grow
and develop, and so that the impact
created by our initiatives touches the
public and participates in leaving a
mark in history beyond our (ourselves
and partner organizations') lives.
The happiest part of my daily routine is
being surrounded by creativity and art
in everything I do. Art is a silent
language that moves, creates emotions,
and leads to happier individuals.
What advice would you give
someone going into a leadership
position for the first time?
Don't do what you love; love what you
do. Emotions are contagious, and your
passion will drive those around you
and all that you touch or do.

Rachel and Carly had been acquainted
for approximately a year before they

Describe who you are as a person,
inside and outside of the workplace.
I think one of the reasons I have been
successful is that my approach with
people is no different inside or outside
of the workplace. I have always prided
myself with being unapologetically me
and I try to maintain authenticity and
transparency with people I work with
personally and professionally. Building
strong alignment in life is largely about
creating and maintaining strong
relationships with others. It can be very
difficult to achieve this without being
open and honest about who you are. I
am a confident leader but also have no
fear of being vulnerable and
empowering others to contribute and
add value. I make every attempt to
inspire others to rally behind my vision
rather than impose my views.
Describe your background and what
did you do before you started/joined
the company?
I spent much of my formative years in
Northern Ontario, Canada and moved
to Southern Ontario in high school. I
studied History and Religious Studies
at Western University where I
completed a Master of Arts in 2012. In
tandem, I spent my first decade in the
professional world honing my
compliance and risk management skills
at Citi Financial. Following the
completion of my MA I accepted a
position in the Risk Management team
of Emco Corporation, Canada's largest
wholesale distributor of plumbing,
HVAC, Industrial, and Waterworks
products. Over the course of the
following decade, I further built my
leadership skills where I oversaw the
complete overhaul of the organization's
Health, Safety, and Wellness program
and was recognized as one of
Occupational Health and Safety
Canada's Top 10 under 40.
Tell us about the inception of the
company. How did it all start?
I have always had a keen interest in
sales and marketing and felt like the
time was perfect to use the skills I have
developed in the corporate world to
embark on my first entrepreneurial
venture to meet a need in the local
market, while supporting other like-

Without strong leaders (not necessarily

possible there can be stagnation that
develops even if team processes and
dynamic is effective.
What are your responsibilities as the

What is the happiest part of your
daily routine?
I am largely involved in business
development and driving the strategic
vision for the organization. The best
part of my role is having the ability to
add value in my local community and
also seeing my team get involved and

What advice would you give
someone going into a leadership
position for the first time?
Patience. Progress and success happen
one small step at a time and
periodically requires some steps
backwards to put on the proper
footwear or get the proper footing.
Forgetting this can lead some to
stumble and fall early in their

falling doesn't necessarily mean
failure. The slips, trips, and falls can be

strategizing open-source dissemination, defining the
architecture for new libraries, and growing the ecosystem's
competency to embed AI. Kunal brought his background in ML
algorithms to create a DIY shelf of hundreds of data science use
cases that shrinks timelines and automates deployment to any

Describe who you are as a person,

I am a hiker, rock climber, and novice
pilot flying to learn. When not doing
that, I do data science. But at my heart
I am a rock climber, always looking
for new challenges to scale be it in
mountains or in machine learning.
Rock climbing is a sport not focused
on getting to the top of the summit but
rather on which path you take to get
there. There always exists an easier
path. Harder the path, more the fun!
It's the hard things that are worthy of
our passion. And I bring the same
attitude of who I am outside of work

AI is all about innovation and the first
thing needed to drive innovation is

unknown. Being a trailblazer inside

Describe your background and what
did you do before this role in the
company.
Unlike many who work in the Tech
sector, I do not have a degree in
Computer Science or IT. I did my
undergrad in Electronics Engineering
specializing in my favorite area of chip
design. Since there were hardly any
chip makers in India, I took up my first
job in java programming, which I
immediately resented. I had no idea
what I wanted to do in my career but I
only knew I won't enjoy being a java
programmer. It was a bold & extremely
risky move as a fresher to walk to your
first manager in your first company and
say no to a project; just a few weeks
into the job. And yes, it did ruffle some
feathers and as a test, I was put on in
an emerging field called “Advanced
Analytics” to build a decision system
for the Military. It includes analyzing
the massive amount of data to guide
army units in conflict. This was a
turning point. I thoroughly enjoyed
modeling data & designing analytics
solutions with data science algorithms
(which have an uncanny similarity to
circuit designs). And soon, I decided to
switch from IT consulting to working
in product development labs; and been
there since.
This experience eventually led me to
re-discover what I absolutely loved as
a high school kid, which is statistics,
and took me back to school to get an
advanced degree from Harvard
University.
Tell us about the inception of your
product journey. How did it all
start?
Over the years, I have focused on
being an in-house entrepreneur by
taking on new product ideas which
push the envelope in the AI
marketplace. I began as a technical
architect for data science capabilities in
Cognos and then in SPSS (the original
AI toolmaker); leading the
development of first of its kind
Decision Mgmt. product that combines
predictive modeling with business
rules to provide optimized decisions to
end users that can be consumed in the
portal. It was a pre-cloud era so little
ahead of its time for the industry when
it comes to building the models via the
web interface. It however taught me
how to be innovative with a product-
market fit.
My last job was to bootstrap & lead the
AI mission in ADP to make HR
products simpler. My most recent
product is “Watson Libraries” for
embedding AI into partner products.
What has made you successful?
What do you value?
It's hard to describe oneself as
successful when AI is a team sport. I
consider myself lucky that I got the
chance to work with people who are
smarter & better than me every step of
the way.
Above all, I value interpersonal
relationships. I remember watching
one documentary as a college kid with
Warren Buffet that left a lifelong
impact on me. In it, he described how
to make decisions about how to buy
companies. I was expecting the answer
to be on the lines of rigorous financial
scrutiny some special due diligence.
Instead what he said was something
very interesting. He said that the most
important thing that makes him decide
if he should do business is if he feels
he can trust the next person (CEO or
president of the company). All due
diligence on one side and trust on
another side. I try to value the same
thing in whosoever I work with. I want
to be seen as a person whom my team,
my colleagues, and my leaders can
trust.
Which are the major services of the
company and how do they the
company to get ahead in the
competition? What value-added
services does the company provide?
I currently lead the Embeddable AI
mission for our partner ecosystem. As
part of Build Lab, we co-create with
other tech companies to build products
that embed AI capabilities into their
software products.
AI is an adversarial game with new
algorithms coming every day that
keeps making what was state-of-the-art
last quarter obsolete. In such a scenario
for companies who want AI capability
in their products but whose main
business is not AI or have millions in
RD we come as a friend.
Watson Libraries are purpose designed
with an open-source form factor, which
provides the algorithms in their raw
form that can be embedded with a
lighter footprint portable on any
Kubernetes platform.
What are the most important aspects
of a company's culture? What
principles do you believe in and how
do you build this culture?
The team culture I espouse is “Move
Fast Make Things” with relentless
innovation. Building team culture often
means leading from the front until the
team gets acclimatized to it and makes
them believe in themselves that
massive success is possible. Once that
hurdle is crossed, a thousand flowers
bloom all over as every team member
is now driven
What is the significance of
innovative ideas in the company?
For AI, innovation is the oil that keeps
the engine running. Without
innovation, no AI product can survive
even a quarter, forget a year.
I personally love leading innovation by
filing patents focused on solving
unknown problems in machine
learning. I have close to 20 patents
papers so far spanning various areas of

part of my job is not so much what I
personally can innovate but how much
I inspire my team to innovate.
Give us your opinion on; do

It is often the virtuous cycle of two,

culture for the team. Individuals who
are highly driven are highflyers

What is the happiest part of your
daily routine?
I love statistics as I found statistics to
be a metaphor (or foundation) for the
cosmos where a symphony of chance
certainly is what defines everything
that happens in the universe ..including
our personal life.
The happiest part of my daily routine is
listening to problems that have no
known solutions. The innovation that
benefits society like using Machine
Learning to measure plastic pollution
in the world ocean or clean images that
are used to measure air pollution was
deeply satisfying. That keeps me
coming back the next day to the job.
What is the new challenge that I will
use AI for?
I often end up my day by going to a
rock-climbing gym and obsessing over
finding that solution
What advice would you give
someone going into a leadership
position for the first time?
The true test of leadership is in pushing
the envelope and then combining bold
ideas with flawless execution to build
great products by capitalizing on the
trust passion of your team. No
customer or client ever cared how great
or original an idea is but rather what
end product enriches their lives.

82. Life Story
Liam was born and raised in a small town in the north of England,
located on the outskirts of the North Yorkshire Moors. He participated in
youth football leagues for several of England's top football (soccer)
academies, including York City and Leeds United. He was released from
York City (League 2) when he was 12 years old, which finally caused
him to give up football for a short while. Liam later went on to play
football again which resulted in a two-year contract with Leeds United at
the age of 14 but later released after the two year contact. Liam re-joined
York City, the team that had previously dropped him, for the next two
years after turning 16 and signing his first professional youth contract. At
the end of the contract, Liam was once again released, and at that time
he was offered the chance to join a football club in the north of Sweden,
where he played for the following few years.
In 2017, Liam suffered a career ending injury when he tore two
ligaments, strained one, and tore both cartilages in his knee. After two
years of rehabilitation and two operations, he made a limited return to
football, playing with Swedish Division 1 and 2 teams and later training
with a Singapore Premier League team in 2019.
Cellfion AB
Liam had the good fortune to land a job in 2020 with the Linköping-
based business incubator LEAD, where he worked on a variety of deep
tech projects. He met the research team behind the amazing technology
and learned more about the work being done at the university through
one of those projects, the Cellfion one. He spent six months researching
the industry and financial prospects for the study and rapidly realized the
potential significance of the technology. It was
a sustainable technology that would also be
used to the energy transition, one of the
fastest-growing and most important sectors of
the economy.
To the best of the team's knowledge, Cellfion
is developing and commercializing the world's
first bio-based ion-selective membrane made
from the most abundant biopolymer on the
planet, cellulose derived from wood. The
membrane can be used in different energy
storage and conversion devices such as Redox
Flow Batteries (a battery technology that can
store substantial amounts of energy) and
hydrogen technologies such as fuel cells (used
for hydrogen conversion to electrical energy)
and Electrolysers (used for the production of
green hydrogen). He says, Our solution isn't
limited to just these devices, as we have
identified over 10 possible applications for the
material.
The Force behind Joining Sector
The key driving force to join this sector was
the feeling of knowing that Liam could make a
real impact with the technology. He says,
Climate change is one of the greatest
challenges we are facing, therefore we need to
reduce greenhouse gasses from the
atmosphere. One thing that is being
overlooked when it comes to climate action is
the materials that are being used. The world is
still turning to unsustainable materials that are
fossil based and contain rare, non-abundant
metals because of the lack of better
alternatives. This is where Liam believes that
Cellfion can make an impact and hopefully
inspire others to dare to take similar journeys.
Seeing Challenges as Ways of
Transformation
The future of manufacturing is exciting. The
number of innovations that can be made in the
area are enormous and Liam sees that
manufacturing has the potential to be modern
and innovative. He says, We already see a
push towards more sustainable manufacturing,
and I believe that clean and bio technologies
will be the future of manufacturing.”

83. Liam wants to see more daring individuals advancing
novel, useful technology. Governments, risk capitalists,
engineers, entrepreneurs, and researchers all have
important roles to play in this. The absence of risk-
takers and entrepreneurs that desire to advance the
technology into a commercial product causes a lot of
wonderful research and new concepts to be lost. He
thinks industries can create the future it desires by
promoting greater innovation.
According to Liam, in a start-up or scale-up company,
one is constantly developing procedures and adapting
value propositions based on the customers' demands and
wants, which is a never-ending process. He asserts,
What we put a lot of focus on today is customizing our
membranes for different market segments and
customers. He believes that through market and
customer focused development, Cellfion can improve
performance and increase the efficiencies of energy
devices. He adds, There is immense potential in
optimizing our solution to fit specific requirements in
each of the applications we target, as well as the 10
potential applications we have identified.
Guidance for Future Leaders
Liam can guarantee that there will be days when
everything feels hopeless, or one gets stuck in a rut. He
suggests for those times, Just keep going. He asserts,
You can only fail if you quit; hardships are just a part
of the journey. He recalls, My father always said to me
growing up that hard work beats talent when talent fails
to work hard. This is something that I carry with me
every day, and something I saw as a footballer. The most
talented players I played with at an early age are now
working in dead-end jobs, whereas the ones that gave
everything but did not have the most talent are now
playing in the Premier League or representing
international teams.”
Liam also believes that it is so easy to get caught up in
one's own work and the little details that one actually
loses sight of the long-term goals or fails to see how far
he or she has come. He says, By surrounding yourself
with experts and people you can trust, you can always
find a way to solve challenges.
Future Ideas
Liam envisions a really thrilling journey over the next
five years. He anticipates that the business will have
reached out to other geographic areas, increased the
number of skilled employees at the company, researched
new goods to add to its product line, and built the first
plant in the world for the production of bio-based ion-
selective membranes.

86. From Adversity to Triumph
Luke is a normal guy of 23 years old, that start his online
business career when he was 20. In the past Luke doesn't
had a very good time… his situation it was like: Debt, no
money, no friends and bad situation at university… so he
spent bad times with himself.
But from this bad situation and difficult things, Luke
found from him the strengthens to wake up and start to
discover a method for earning online, without money,
knowledge and too much time to invest.
He bought a lot of courses for thousands and thousands
of dollars but the results didn't arrive… so from this
experience, he learn an important lesson: It's better to
have own method for earn online and don't use the old
method that everyone today use.
Despite these adversities, Luke discovered the resilience
within himself, prompting him to seek an online earning
method that required no money, expertise, or significant
time investment. He ventured into purchasing numerous
courses, spending thousands of dollars, but
unfortunately, the desired results eluded him. However,
this experience taught him a valuable lesson: it is
preferable to have a unique approach to online earning
rather than following the same old methods everyone
else employs.
Luke's breakthrough came with an automated online
earning method that required no expertise or resources.
Recognizing AI as the future, he embraced it, rising from
his challenging past. By harnessing AI's power, Luke
transformed his life, paving a brighter future in online
entrepreneurship.
