Kelley Durham, Owner & Personal Injury Attorney at K Durham Law PLLC, graced the cover of World’s Leaders Magazine as one of the Worlds Most Influential Women in Law, 2024
4. World’s Most Inuential
Women in Law, 2024
Though women have been theoretically allowed to
practice law for a long time, several persistent practical
obstacles have prevented many women from actually
pursuing the legal profession. For example, the
traditional family structure discouraged women from
having the assertive, cunning, and persistent traits
required for legal battles. To succeed or become
successful, they were usually educated to be more
agreeable and submissive—qualities that are not highly
valued in the legal sector. Since women are trained from
an early age to be less aggressive and more empathetic
and sensitive, this puts many of them at a disadvantage.
Unfortunately, this notion has to change since generosity
is a prerequisite for communal empowerment. Consider
taking a coworker to lunch to learn how you might help
them navigate their problems and overcome barriers.
Openly supporting and elevating female coworkers may
also be achieved by offering guidance and by sharing
networking, mentorship, and other chances for
professional development.
World's Leaders latest edition “World's Most Influential
Women in Law, 2024” has featured success stories of
woman law experts who are taking leadership to new
heights. The cover has Kelley Durham, an empathetic
and committed attorney specializing in serious and
catastrophic personal injury law, leads the dedicated
team at K Durham Law PLLC. With over 24 years of
experience in personal injury, she has spent 17 of those
years establishing herself as a leading figure in the field.
Beginning as a legal assistant in a personal injury firm,
her passion for the law ignited. Progressing through
roles, she became a paralegal and later an associate
attorney after earning her Juris Doctorate from Texas A
& M School of Law, graduating early. Post-law school,
she further refined her skills as an associate. Recognizing
the opportunity to make a significant impact advocating
for personal injury victims, Kelley founded the
successful law firm, K Durham Law PLLC, in 2015.

18. Ana
Tereza Basilio
A Renowned Arbitration Expert Serving Client with Excellence
Despite the fact that understanding and mastering group dynamics is
crucial for all leaders, there was a sense in our conversa ons that it
may, regre ably, be more likely to be put to the test if a female is in
charge of the group than a male. Although dealing with unconscious prejudice
can be challenging, it may present a chance to improve crucial listening skills
that might never be put to the test. Legal leadership is dis nct in and of itself.
Even though there are many common traits of effec ve leadership, the
demanding technical exper se required of lawyers adds extra elements to
success in the field.
Elected as a Leading Individual in the list of the best lawyers in the world in the
area of corporate li ga on by the Bri sh magazine Who`s Who`s, Ana Tereza
Basilio is a Founding Partner at Basilio Advogados and a renowned name in the
area of arbitra on.

21. Journey to the Best
Ana Tereza Basilio is a Brazilian
lawyer, completed her Bachelor of
Laws at the Cândido Mendes
University of Rio de Janeiro (UCAM)
in December 1989 and her graduation
in US Law at the University of
Wisconsin. She was a partner at Sergio
Bermudes Law Firm from 1990 to
1998 and an international partner at
Baker & McKenzie, responsible for the
civil and commercial litigation and
arbitration areas in Brazil, from July
2002 to 2005. She was an honorary
partner of the Andrade e Fichtner Law
Firm, in the civil and commercial
litigation and arbitration departments
from January 2006 to December 2008.
In 2008, Ana and her brother João
Basilio took on the challenge and
launched themselves into the new
project. They invited prominent
lawyers on the national scene and
graduates of law firms within the
country. They founded Basilio
Advogados Law Firm, which has
grown exponentially in specialized
civil litigation, arbitration, and
consulting firms in the past 12 years.
In her journey, Ana had the honor to be
a judge of the Regional Electoral Court
of the State of Rio de Janeiro, from
December 2010 to July 2015. She was
a member of the International Chamber
of Commerce (ICC), based in Paris, in
the Arbitration and Dispute Resolution
(ADR) commission, Director of
Mediation and Arbitration of the
Institute of Brazilian Lawyers elected
in 2018 for the biennium 2018-2019,
and President of the Mediation and
Arbitration commissions of this
Institute since 2019. In 2019, Ana was
nominated as Member of the
Permanent Forum of the Arbitration
Commission of the Escola de
Magistratura of the State of Rio de
Janeiro (EMERJ), and in August 2021,
together with great names of the legal
profession, she founded the Instituto
Brasileiro de Estudos em Proteção de
Dados - IBRADADOS, assuming its
presidency until April 2022.
Basilio Advogados
Basilio Advogados is well-known
among Brazilian families and is skilled
in providing legal services in the fields
of corporate, real estate, family law,
and civil litigation. It focuses on
business and is built around serving
huge corporations in a variety of
industries, including public service
concessionaires, healthcare, mining,
banking, construction, retail, and
individual customers. The firm's
diverse team works in a variety of
industry sectors, but it excels at
strategic civil litigation and arbitration.
They respond to demands that have
both domestic and international
implications, as Ana is proud to state.
Gains Accolades and Recognition
In November 2018, Ana was elected to
serve as the Vice-President of the
Brazilian Bar Association, Section of
the State of Rio de Janeiro for the
2019–2021 biennium, and in
November 2021, she was chosen to
serve once more for the 2022–2024
triennium. The Permanent Forum of
Transparency and Administrative
Probity, of the School of Magistrates of
the State of Rio de Janeiro-EMERJ,
nominated Ana as a member in May
2022. She was awarded the Medal of
Judicial Merit, from the Court of
Justice of Rio de Janeiro, in 2014 and
the Medal of Merit from the Federal
Regional Court of Rio de Janeiro in
2015; she was finally awarded the
Tiradentes Medal in September 2019
by ALERJ - Legislative Assembly of
the State of Rio de Janeiro and
recently, in August, 2022, she had the
honor of being awarded the Medal of
Merit Pedro Ernesto, conferred by the
illustrious councilors that make up the
City Council of the city of Rio de
Janeiro.
Growing as a Litigator
It is everyone's responsibility to learn
and evolve. Evolving means growing
by putting down strong and deep roots.
It means consolidating itself in the
market, having a strong base, and
transmitting security to the customers
and employees. Ana herself keeps
changing, modifying, and developing
in accordance with society and the law.
She keeps studying, improving herself,
exchanging experiences with her
colleagues, and dedicating her time to
each new challenge she comes across.
"Solving our customers' challenges is
the result we seek, the fruit we want to
reap day after day. Nowadays, what I
see that young lawyers lack, not all of
them, but in some, is precisely this
constant search for learning, the desire
to grow, to develop." Exhorts Ana
As per her considerations, one cannot
be conformist and stagnate. If society
changes, the law adapts to new
realities, laws fall out of favor, and
new laws are written and enacted, then
this evolution must be followed.
Secrets of Success
Ana, João and Márcio Notini, three
partners, run Basilio's management.
Operations and financial duties are
managed on a daily basis by João and
Márcio Notini. When it comes to
working with clients, managing cases,
putting teams together, creating
procedural tactics, and, of course,
meetings, dispatches, and oral
arguments, Ana is in charge. Ana
intends to keep up her aggressive legal
advocacy since she finds her greatest
enjoyment and satisfaction in being at
the forefront of her clients' and their
interests.

28. Below are
highlights of
the interview
conducted
between
World's Leaders
and Cindy
Watson:
Describe who you are as a person,
inside and outside of the workplace.
I've always been passionate and driven
about issues I care about. Growing up
in a blue-collar family (in a low-rent
apartment complex with a father who
worked shift work in a paper mill
factory), I felt called to protect the
rights of workers. It was always
instilled in me from a young age that
everyone deserves to be treated with
dignity and respect in the workplace
and beyond. That is a life-long
philosophy I have embraced and
brought to my law practice, zealously
representing trade unions and the rights
of their members.
Describe your background and what
did you do before you started/joined
the company?
Coming from a blue-collar
background, my parents didn't have the
resources to afford a post-secondary
education for me. So, I worked almost
full-time hours waitressing throughout
the school year for my high school,
university, and law school experiences
to earn the money to fund my
education. In the summers, I sought out
relevant work experience, doing an
internship in the Students Training in
Industrial Relations program, working
at employment agencies (both private
and public), and working with a trade
union.
Tell us about the inception of the
company. How did it all start?
I went to law school knowing I wanted
to practice trade union labor law. I
articled at the Labour Relations Board,
and after my call to the bar, I took a
position at a boutique labour law firm.
I was offered a partnership after only 3
years, but while I loved the practice, I
knew I didn't want to do it there.
Everyone thought I was having an
early midlife crisis when I turned it
down and opted to put out my own
shingle. I wanted a firm that was
mission-driven and ideologically
committed to protecting and enhancing
rights for workers and unions.
With the naiveté that comes from
youth, I had no doubt that it would
succeed. In hindsight, I had no equity,
no assurance of clients, no business
plan, or any of the typical minimum
requirements for a business start-up,
but my unshakable confidence in the
power of my mission allowed me to
forge a path to kickstart my own
boutique labor law firm, which quickly
grew (both in size and reputation). We
became known for our passionate
advocacy on behalf of our clients, and
I'm proud to say that reputation
continues.
What has made you successful?
What do you value?
I've always prided myself and our firm
on our core values of integrity, passion,
drive, commitment, and excellence.
That winning combination delivers
consistent, superior results. We believe
in what we do and the important value
it brings, not only to our clients but the
broader community as we advocate for
enhanced rights for workers on a
global level.
Because we are mission-driven, we
aren't motivated by the money. We
pride ourselves on our ability to effect
superior settlements, knowing when
and how to avoid litigation to secure
creative best outcomes and when to
litigate.
Cindy Watson, the founder and managing partner of
Watson Labour Law and a graduate of the renowned
Osgoode Hall, is an experienced and recognized a orney
who has specialized in social jus ce for the past 30 years.
Cindy is a sought-a er corporate trainer and speaker who
works to bridge the gap between men and women in
order to improve produc vity, communica on, and
gender prejudice.
Cindy is commi ed to breaking down barriers, achieving
wage fairness, and pu ng an end to discrimina on. She
has a demonstrated track record of empowering, figh ng
for, and pushing individuals to be the greatest versions of
themselves.
She is a well-known interna onal speaker, author, and

29. Which are the major services of the
company and how do they the
company to get ahead in the
competition? What value-added
services does the company provide?
We offer the full range of services to
our trade union clients, including (but
not limited to):
Representation before all labour
tribunals and at all levels of court
Ÿ Grievance & arbitration advocacy
Ÿ Labour Board advocacy
Ÿ Workers compensation matters
Ÿ Disability benefits
Ÿ Equity work
Ÿ Human Rights advocacy
Ÿ Legislative and political lobbying
Ÿ Training & Education programming
We stand out from the competition
given our passionate commitment to
the cause which is reflected in our
advocacy and in our ability to secure
better outcomes without litigation
where appropriate. We tirelessly seek
the best possible results for our clients.
We do so utilizing what we call the Art
of Feminine Negotiation, where we
bring rapport-building, empathy,
flexibility, intuition and trust-building
to the table so our clients get more
creative outcomes with better
relationships, greater buy-in and
longer-lasting agreements.
We think outside the box, looking for
unexamined options for enhanced
solutions. This cooperative versus
competitive approach consistently
yields better experiences and outcomes
for our clients. Having said that, where
necessary we are known for our
exceptional advocacy, where we leave
no stone unturned.
We care about our clients and their
issues. We don't treat them like
numbers.
Unlike most law firms, we also think
proactively, seeking to anticipate issues
and redressing them before they
become conflicts or problems. Our
proactive (vs reactive) approach is
unique in the practice of law and saves
our clients much time, money, angst
and relationships.
Give us your opinion on; do
organizations rely heavily on
individual heroics or team
processes?
Team is key in life generally, in
business organizations, and particularly
for trade unions and service providers
for unions. Unions are based on a
philosophy of solidarity—stronger
together. Individual heroics do not
serve the greater good. Building an
engaged, dedicated, passionate team is
key to success. Studies show that
diversity in thinking allows for more
creative outcomes and better results
(not to mention improved productivity
and efficiency).
Teamwork and the brainstorming it
affords will increase the output of any
organization (both in terms of
quantitative productivity, but perhaps
more importantly, in terms of more
refined, creative, distinctive, move-the-
dial end results).
This holds true generally, and we see it
as particularly important for our law
firm. Unions secure their strength in
numbers. Unions that rely on
individual heroics don't survive. The
law firms that serve trade unions need
to similarly embrace and foster team
environments to deliver the best
possible service, advice, and results.
What are your responsibilities as the
Founder/CEO of the company?
What is the happiest part of your
daily routine?
I'm proud to have built our thriving
practice over the last 30 years. We've
built a reputation for our passion,
integrity, and results. I'm still integrally
involved in the building of our team
and ensuring that our culture continues
to reflect our core values. Hiring our
best team is a key part of that process,
as is fostering relationships with our
long-time clients and building on client
development for the future.
I'm lucky to still be passionate about
representing trade unions. I love the
advocacy, and I particularly love the
exceptional training and education we
offer. Engaging directly with members,
stewards and front-line union reps
feeds me – the energy flows both ways
as we inspire each other in carrying
forward the important work that needs
to be done.
What advice would you give
someone going into a leadership
position for the first time?
Listen. Really listen. Bring empathy to
the table, truly seeking to understand
and meet the needs of others (both
within and outside your organization).
The benefits of this approach cannot be
overstated. Never seek to exert power
over others, but rather, always strive to
achieve power with those you engage
with.

Eare becoming worse
and worse. More
than ever, the world is
witnessing the brutality of
environmental
irresponsibility and the
catastrophic repercussions
of climate change, from
coastal erosion to smoggy
skies and disappearing
forests.
Corinne Lepage, a doctor of
law, has developed a
consultancy business that
encompasses strategy and
litigation due to her
experience and kept up with
the major energy,
environmental health, and
environmental files. She
collaborates with large and
small, French and
international, public and
non-profit organizations.
In addition, Corinne oversees significant
environmental, natural, and industrial disaster cases.
She is one of the experts on these subjects in
Europe. She co-founded the Huglo Lepage Avocats
law firm in 1978 with Christian Huglo and held a
number of official positions, including Secretary of
the bar council (1987–1990), Minister of the
environment (1995–1997), Deputy mayor, then First
deputy mayor of Cabourg (1989–2001), and
European deputy (2009–2014). She holds talks a
large corporations on how environmental and
climatic issues have evolved in relation to
commercial concerns.
Huglo Lepage Avocats
The first French public law firm founded by
litigation lawyers was Huglo Lepage Avocats. The
firm still provides advice to public authorities and
organizations today, and the majority of its litigation
work is done in the area of public law, particularly
public business law. One of the firm's most popular
lawsuits was the Amoco Cadiz case, which was
brought before American courts in 1978. Numerous
Environmental law disputes have been handled by
the attorneys at Huglo Lepage Avocats, notably the
defense of Dutch public authorities in relation to
Rhine pollution and German authorities in relation
to French nuclear power stations. The firm now
splits its time between counseling businesses and
municipal governments and litigation, continuing to
develop new fields of law, particularly those
pertaining to climate justice and environmental
health.
Making the difference in Competition
Corinne and her team are adapting to changes by
having a transversal perspective which spans not
only the various legal disciplines but also many
other sectors that are remote from the legal one,
particularly scientific and medical expertise. Huglo
Lepage Avocats has valued greatly reflection and
theory from the beginning and has always seen the
need for legal innovation.

She believes that running a business
is not easy, and it is even more
difficult now as there are significant
changes in how work is organized
and what customers and staff want.
The most crucial factors are having a

being practical, and leading a team

traits she searches for. She first

36. Heidi Lindner
Supporting Entities in the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Sectors
“The possibility of designing solid
and innovative legal strategies to
face the challenges of my clients
has always been a source of
professional inspiration.”
36 | March 2024
38. The Heidi Staircase
As a young child, Heidi Lindner
enjoyed arguing, debating, expressing
her opinions, and taking the lead. Her
decision to seek a career in law may
have been influenced by her feeling of
powerlessness in the face of injustices
as much as her rage. Since her first
year of high school, she has known that
she wants to follow this area of study.
She earned a master's degree from
Panamerican University, a
specialization in constitutional
litigation (Amparo) from the Supreme
Court of Justice of Mexico's Institute
of Judicial Specialization, and a
master's degree from George
Washington University.
As her career progressed, Heidi
eventually concentrated on the topic of
Life Sciences within Intellectual
Property Law, paying particular
attention to the most recent
developments in science and
technology. She worked for Baker &
McKenzie's Intellectual Property
Department for about eight years.
During that time, she also rose to the
position of local partner. She joined the
current company, which was formerly
known as Arochi, Marroquin &
Lindner, in 1994. She is a Senior
Partner and the head of the Patent
Litigation section of Arochi & Lindner,
and she has more than 35 years of
experience in intellectual property and
life sciences litigation and advising,
achieving favorable rulings in several
landmark cases for clients in the
pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and
medical device industries.
Arochi & Lindner
Arochi & Lindner is a well-known and
respected name in Latin American
intellectual property protection. It was
established in 1994 and has become a
prominent firm in large part because of
its innovative and customer-focused
mindset. It opened an office in Spain in
2011, and as a direct result of its
success, they are still expanding both
domestically and internationally today.
Offering high-profile legal counsel in
the fields of intellectual property, life
sciences, marketing and advertising,
civil and commercial litigation,
corporate and regulatory, and personal
data security, the company has more
than 27 years of experience.
It helps clients overcome the legal
challenges they face by providing clear
and accurate advice that recognizes
and minimizes risks, foresees and
resolves issues, and secures the highest
potential profit for the clients within
each business opportunity, market, or
industry.
Due to its unwavering commitment to
each project, it is famous for its client-
focused service delivery method that
generates results quickly and
effectively. This is made possible by
the firm's commitment to each project;
its thorough approach based on years
of experience across a range of practice
areas; the assertiveness and
competence of its associates; and its
excellent understanding of clients'
business objectives.
38 | March 2024
39. Acknowledged for Competence
In the course of her career, Heidi has
had the privilege of being named as
one of Mexico's top attorneys in the
practice of intellectual property and
life sciences by a number of
specialized ranking publications,
including Chambers, WTR, IAM
Patents, and IP Stars. She was also
named three times to IP Stars' list of
the "Top 250 Women in IP 2022,"
which honors the top female
professionals worldwide.
She provides business advice on
licensing and regulatory issues
pertaining to the Mexican life sciences
industry, in addition to litigation. In
addition, she serves as a legislative
counselor to the National Association
of Drug Manufacturers, various Senate
committees, and, most recently, the
new Federal Law on the Protection of
Industrial Property.
Heidi was a member of the panel
representing the private sector,
specifically the Mexican
pharmaceutical industry, and she
advised the Mexican government on
the IP chapter during the negotiations
of the Comprehensive and Progressive
Agreement for Trans-Pacific
Partnership (CPTPP) and the United
States-Mexico-Canada Agreement
(USMCA/TMEC).
Holding a Position
The founding partner and devoted
leader of the business, Heidi Lindner,
has always been committed to offering
reliable legal services because she
cares about building solid relationships
via this commitment. She also focuses
on fostering a climate that will help the
company's administrative and
professional staff excel in their
respective domains. Given the
importance of diversity and inclusion,
she has always advocated for social
equality for all employees inside the
company in a setting that allows them
to fully develop their strengths.
Moreover, through IP litigation, she
has been able to influence the
development of the field through
significant rulings by federal judges.
As a pioneer in this area, Heidi is
equally interested in empowering more
women to make steady progress in the
workplace, allowing them to establish
themselves in leadership roles while
also developing their abilities.
Status as a Woman: A Challenge!
On the one hand, Heidi Lindner's
youth, which frequently limited her
options for action, is one of the two
biggest obstacles she has encountered.
But over time, this barrier has steadily
disappeared. The other obstacle has
been her gender, which, while it wasn't
a barrier to starting Arochi & Lindner,
has always been difficult when dealing
with customers, officers, and judges.
Men continue to hold the majority of
legal positions in Mexico. Growing
professionally in this setting entails
showcasing aptitude "despite being a
woman." Nothing is assumed without
question.
Heidi describes an instance in which
she conquered a gender barrier.
"I remember, about twenty years ago,
when the owner of a major company in
Mexico contacted me for an interview
to determine if I was suitable to work
on their intellectual property matters.
Before reaching me, he had already
met with two important law offices in
Mexico. After a meeting lasting more
than an hour, comparable to a
professional exam, the entrepreneur
finally handed over his business card.
That day, we started a great
professional relationship that still lasts
and has borne fruit with many other
companies in the field.”
Work-Life Balance
Heidi claims that the outstanding team
she has gradually assembled is made
up of energetic, dedicated, and well-
qualified young individuals. She
therefore finds that her team meetings
are her favorite part of the day. They
work in a setting of trust and talent
synergy, which not only makes them
all improve and produce better results
for the clients, but is also enjoyable.
She finds that one of the best feelings
comes at the end of the day, knowing
that the clients' expectations have been
fulfilled.
Given Heidi's commitments to the firm
and to her clients, balancing work and
personal life is always a challenge. It
necessitates the somewhat taxing
process of time management. It is vital
to be inventive in order to find quality
time. Creating boundaries between
work and personal life is also
important. She certainly doesn't always
strike the perfect balance, but she is
attempting to become more conscious
of her welfare and is urging her staff to
do the same.
"Tried and True Physician”
"Though I believe that the most
essential attribute is being empathic
with the client, providing a
personalized and receptive service that
generates a bond of solid trust
equivalent to that of a patient with
their "tried and true physician," Heidi
asserts.
