Film Pitch: Lost Life
By William Craig, Max Gridley,
Ben Clifford and Deborah Hughes.
Lost Life 11/11/2014
Context
 Our film is targeted at ages 13 to 30 due to the violence involved with the
film however as the narrative will show the film is mainly about the effect
involved with the disaster not the incident itself.
 Based in the genre of the film and the rough narrative the production
company would be Amblin Entertainment, this company is US based and has
produced films like Twister (1996) which has the same disaster/drama hybrid
as our film opening.
 Our opening will have similarities to classic disaster films like Twister, 2012
and Flood whereas they can also be compared to dramatic films that deal
with death like The Bucket List and Seven Pounds.

Inspirations
www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVYP46ecl4Y Zombieland: This inspiration is down
to the clever credits and the hybrid
of genres.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty: We
found inspiration from this film due
to the good shots and location. The
phone call is clever and the idea
may be used in our film.
Lost Life 11/11/2014
Genre Conventions
 The genre of my film is drama.
 In our opening we are concentrating on specific people and how the disaster
effects them. It is extremely hard to film a disaster scene that looks realistic
so therefore we will limit the number of shots that include the difficult
scenes and try to angle the shots so that it look as good as possible.
 The genre will be clear due to the emotions shown by the actors and the
horror conveyed in the disaster scenes. The empathy will be given in the
disaster scenes due to people dying.
 The target audience for this film would be teenagers as the rating will be
12A. Also the actors within this will be teenagers and therefore wouldn’t
appeal to older generations.
Lost Life 11/11/2014
Message and Themes
 Themes: Horror, Disaster, News, Disorientation, Real life events.
 The opening will introduce the victim and the family member receiving the
news. These two characters will be the main stars in the film.
 Narrative: A disaster (natural or otherwise) occurs and the character Ben is a
victim a second scene is running parallel to this of a news article where the
disaster is being reported. The victim is witnessing the disaster from the
ground and then you see the emotion of the person watching from there
home.
 Icons: TV which represents the news and the receiving of events. The bodies
on the floor which represent the death and horror of the situation. This is also
shown in destruction through the rubble.
Lost Life 11/11/2014
Textual Analysis
 We aim to include a wide range of shots in this opening as the genre allows
different interpretations. For example we will use close ups of Max receiving
the news as it will intensify the emotion. However for the disaster a wide
panning shot would be effective to show the extent of the disaster, although
this may be difficult to film.
Lost Life 11/11/2014
Practicalities
 Characters: The main characters in this film opening will be Ben who will be
the news reporter and Max who will play the person receiving the news.
There will only be the need for two characters in this opening as in the
opening we will just create the problem and not go into detail of how this will
be resolved. Other actors may play people injured in the disaster however
this hasn’t been planned yet.
 Setting: The setting of the film would be indoors in a living room as it would
be a recording of a TV. The actual news report could be taken anywhere. The
shots taken of a disaster scene will be taken on a road or street however we
may use a green screen to get the shots. We could also use a beach or the sea
in our opening to show the damage of the disaster.
 Our opening is attainable as the majority of the opening will be the breaking
news filmed in a home and a section of background of the persons life.
