1. 2019 SXSW Panel Proposal
The New Rules of Artist Management
Short Description: Hold on to your seats and get ready for a
rowdy, cutting-edge & authentic discussion with four Artist Managers
that grew up in the game together!
Long Description: Addressing the then and now within Artist
Management. Session to include funny banter about old versus new
concepts. Topics include, Rules of Engagement, how to stay in tune
without losing touch of your core fans. Respect is strength...Not yelling
and throwing staplers anymore! The previous music industry mentality to
be "strong” meant to yell and scream to make your point... Now times
have evolved; respect makes a stronger point and is a much more
effective form of communication and execution. Partnership &
Collaboration is the ‘new black', which covers both brands and artists
about going 'wide' vs 'up'. Last but not least, Development is back -
creative, strategic quality control of releases utilizing best practices and
nuances to be heard over and above the clutter.
Organizer: Whitney Bishop (Parkham Global)
Moderator: James Blades (Blades Entertainment)
Panelists: Nick Lippman (Lippman Entertainment), Dan Dymtrow
(Maverick) & Ryan Chisholm (Nettwerk)
Topics to include, but not limited to:
• Then and Now
o Funny banter about old versus new concepts in management
as word play...ie: 'Agent vs Promoter’
• Respect is strength...Not yelling and throwing staplers anymore!
o The previous music industry mentality to be "strong”meant to
yell and scream to make your point or to get your way.
▪ Now times have evolved; respect makes a stronger point
and is a much more effective form of communication
and execution.
▪ Having the humility to listen to other ideas and/or not
let one’s ego sandbag opportunities is crucial. Stories,
anecdotes and tools to thrive now.
• Partnership & Collaboration is the ‘new black'
o Brands: Most artists would prefer to get a sponsorship from a
bigger company in general, but that would lead nothing more
2. than a short term check. Which we like, although there is
deepe alliances in play now. Partnering with a start-up that
would market you properly (plus provide a point in the
company) would allow the artist to win twice. (i,e, Timberlake
& Bai, Nicky Jam & Dirty Lemon, 50 Cent & Vitamin Water, etc)
o Artists: Most artists think that they need to collaborate with
someone “UP” from where they are, instead of “WIDE” where
they would receive the upside of the awareness of a different
and larger group.
• Development is Back
o Now more than ever you can't simply throw a record up and
have success, without a true plan and strategy around the
releases.
o Content is king; Creative, strategic quality control of releases
utilizing best practices and nuances to be heard over and
above the clutter.
• Rules of Engagement
o What is working right now and what will work in the
immediate future.
▪ Community management for instance is key, especially
on platforms that are at the center of our culture like
Instagram & Twitter.
• Caring about the consumer and eliminating the
friction to optimize the D2C relationship
• How to stay in tune w/ a wider fan base, w/o losing touch of your
core fans
o Strategies to balance this tricky game
