  2. 2. Introduction to Non-Verbal Communication. <ul><li>Our aim is to begin studying: </li></ul><ul><li>Kinesics: body movement, facial expression and gesture. </li></ul><ul><li>Eye-contact. </li></ul><ul><li>Proxemics: how we handle the space around us. </li></ul>
  3. 3. How do we ‘read’ body language? <ul><li>(1) Pick one of the following characters to analyse: </li></ul><ul><li>Del Boy (centre). </li></ul><ul><li>Rodney (left). </li></ul><ul><li>Granddad (right). </li></ul>
  4. 4. (2) Note down for your character, the following: <ul><li>Gestures they use. </li></ul><ul><li>Facial expressions. </li></ul><ul><li>Posture. </li></ul><ul><li>Eye-contact. </li></ul><ul><li>How physically close he is to other characters. </li></ul>

(3) And then jot down how these gestures, facial expressions or posture could reveal something about: <ul><li>The situation the character is in. </li></ul><ul><li>His relationship with other characters. </li></ul><ul><li>The relationship the character might want. </li></ul><ul><li>Cultural background / social attitudes. </li></ul>

  9. 10. Non-verbal communication can also reveal: <ul><li>Who has power or status. </li></ul><ul><li>The emotions or feelings of characters. </li></ul><ul><li>Attitudes. </li></ul><ul><li>Identity – how they think they are. </li></ul>

Look at your magazine…………. <ul><li>Where can you find examples of body-language in photographs that show: </li></ul><ul><li>The power/status of characters. </li></ul><ul><li>The emotions or feelings of people. </li></ul><ul><li>Their attitude to something. </li></ul><ul><li>How people feel about their identity – who they are or want to be. </li></ul>
