Nursing Admission Essay Sample
I grow both personally and professionally through my relationship with nursing. Unlike many other careers, the growth is reciprocal. Nursing gives
me the freedom to venture into uncharted territory and in turn, nursing's boundaries expand. As the field of nursing develops and strengthens in new
areas, unique and rewarding opportunities become available to me. While I achieve a Master's of Science in Adult Primary Care from New York
University the profession of nursing will, in return, be rewarded with a valuable contributor. My nursing relationship began after a successful yet
uninspired career in fashion and media production. As the first person in my family to attend college and self–fund it, I am especially proud to have
graduated cum laude from the University of Texas with a BSN in December 2004. In school I maintained a 3.69 GPA in my

Oz Show, as a guest on Good Day New York, and on ABC 7 Eyewitness News with Dr. Jay Adlersberg. Dr. Jay Adlersberg has encouraged me to draw
upon my past career in modeling and on–set production to become the first nurse health correspondent. He and I agree that it makes sense for nurses to
deliver health–related information in the media. The public wants information from reliable, honest and ethical sources and nursing has ranked the
most honest and ethical profession in 13 out of 14 annual Gallop Poll surveys. After bolstering my education and credentials at NYU, filling the
vacancy in television is something that I would consider. Teaching is one of my favorite aspects of nursing and I could reach a much broader
audience using this forum. However, I want to be clear, I am not focused on self–promotion. I am interested in health promotion; health promotion
through my business, my writing and the media. A graduate nursing degree from NYU combined with my business acumen and previous career
experience will give me the confidence and credibility to advance in all of these

Nurse Residency Paper
The concept of nurse residency programs is not by any means a new concept. Programs have been grounded on Benner's theory of novice to expert.
Benner established the notation that nurses develop skills and understanding of job skills over time through an education also with hands on
experiences. She noted a nurse passes through five levels of proficiency: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert and was
generally reached only after years of gaining experience as a practicing nurse. A nurse residency can facilitate new nurse graduates to transition
smoothly through the levels and sometimes even more quickly. As a new graduate a nurse residency program is very appealing, not only does it help
mentor you through novice period but also helps develop competent nurses for the organization....show more content...
The report encouraged the assessment of NRPs' efficacy, predominantly their capability to enhance patient outcomes, nurse retention, and professional
proficiency. Despite the increasing amount of research on residency program outcomes, best practices for implementation are still changing. Therefore,
this paper focuses on the best practice recommendations. NRPs have made a tremendous impact on the nursing field to both novice nurses as well as
the expert nurse. The main themes appearing when reviewing the literature were reports about clinical competency, preparing new graduates for
interprofessional teamwork, training, orientation, and mentorship for newly graduated nurses. These topics will be discussed in this paper as they
pertain to nurse residency programs and newly licensed

Reflection On Learning Experience In Nursing
Reflection is used as a tool for self–improvement by examining and interpreting. Through the learning experience, it helps guide one's self. For
myself, I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect back on the last eight weeks of nursing school, I want to exam what it is like being a student,
moreover what I have learned in school as well as the clinical setting. Entering into nursing school I knew ahead of time that I would be faced with
challenges, consequently compelled to overcome certain adversities in order to achieve my goal. The first hardship I was faced with, was
juggling a full time job, family, along with nursing school. In order for me to be successful, I realized that I needed to choose what is important;
therefore, I resigned from my position as a Residential Manager of two group homes where I have worked for the past 15 years. This decision
allows the opportunity to devote more time for my academics. The adjustment has been difficult as I feel a sense of loss. My identity has changed
and what I have known for the last decade in a half is no longer present. Through the duration of the first semester, I can officially say that I'm
pleased with the progress that I have made. NSI has not been any easy task, but my grades are steadily increasing. Nursing is a continual education,
as nursing is continually changing. I have embraced different techniques learned through Kaplan to enhance my level of learning, such as time
management, prioritizing as well as stress reduction. I have compiled numerous notes along with flash cards to assist with studying. The greatest
effective tool I have utilized is study groups; this allowed different perspectives on the material, also granted the opportunities to fill in the gaps. As
the first semester draws to a near I'm faced with what I have learned, what I will take forward into the next semester, likewise what I will leave
behind. I have learned from being in the clinical setting being a nurse takes solid work, and dedication long after school ends. I will take forward
different experiences that I have encountered through my clinical rotation in the long term facility, the basic skills that I have obtained in lecture as
well as in the lab, along with great

A Career in Nursing Essay example
Nursing is defined as "as an application of scientific knowledge enhanced by artful practice in a socially responsible manner." (Gregory 5). Nurses
provide leadership as members of interdisciplinary teams, provide client centered care to promote health, prevent disease, and restore and maintain
client integrity throughout the life span. (Krannich 71). This makes it one of the most interesting professions, in my opinion.
General Qualifications for becoming a nurse, according to Regina Ranburn, include: "Compassion, caring for others, selflessness, love for humanity,
and desire to help others" (1). These qualities are vital to a career in nursing because most fields require direct patient care. Dealing with patients

Emergency Room, especially, the ability to access a situation and act quickly is vital to the patient's survival rate.
In order to acquire a degree in nursing, the steps required are having a high school diploma and some form of formal education post high school.
There are three different paths available: a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN), an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), or a hospital
diploma of nursing (Krannich 72). A BSN program includes four years in college with the curriculum consisting of "assessment, disease management,
decision making, health promotion and prevention, health care technology and policy, research, quality assurance, leadership, and management."
(Gregory 5). You are also required to complete clinical training, meaning working in a hospital for experience in the field with real people and
situations. The ADN program only requires two to three years of education (Gregory 5). However, the ADN program had the most educational
opportunities, or universities offering the program. The hospital diploma career path is not offered by every hospital, but only by seventy. The ADN

Competencies between BSN and ADN, RN Nurses There are numerous differences in competencies between BSN and ADN. Nursing is a dynamic
profession and life long learning is essential for nurses to stay current with the increased complexity of the healthcare needs of today and into the

How To Be A Registered Nurse Essay
Associate's Degree Programs
An associate's degree in nursing (ADN) includes courses in anatomy, nursing, nutrition, chemistry, microbiology among others. You'll also be required
to take general liberal arts classes. Earning an ADN is the most popular option for registered nurses and opens the door to entry–level staff nurse
positions which will provide you with hands–on experience in the medical field.
This is the fastest path to becoming a registered nurse as most associate's degree programs last about two to three years.

My Experiences in a Nursing Career Essay
Nursing
"Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, It requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painterВґs or sculptorВґs work; for what
is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of GodВґs spirit? It is one of the Fine
Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts." Spoken by a true nurse, Florence Nightingale; a pioneer of nursing and a reformer of hospital

My sights have changed as I have gotten older. I no longer want to become a medical doctor. I may in the far future decide to become a doctor but I
would rather be a registered nurse because they deal with the patients more. I also prefer working with pediatric or gereatric patients. Whatever
way that I decide to go I will always be helping someone, somewhere. I have looked at many colleges. I find myself lucky to be in Grand Forks,
North Dakota. UND is an amazing school, with a highly recommended nursing program. North Dakota is one of the only states left that require a
four year nursing degree. I looked in to going to the tech but decided that it was not the right choice for me since I am planning to stay in North
Dakota. This would mean I would have to work in minnesota or take a job in North Dakota and work under a different title with less pay and
benefits. Another benefit that accompanies going to a four year nursing program is if i wanted to higher my education it would be in my best
interest to have the extra two years behind me. My next step in becomming a registered nursing is a little sidetracked. I want to be come a CMA. A
CMA is a certified medical assistant. Once I become a CMA I will have more responsibility but it will be worth it. Becomming a CMA will help me
in future classes at UND. I will have the backround of medications as well as a better understanding of patients.

Foremost, I am drawn to nursing from experiencing the lack of quality healthcare available throughout society, often to the people who need it the
most. Growing up in rural China, I have witnessed the negative effects of a faulty healthcare system on children, adults, and even a whole community.

Coming from a family that struggles financially, my parents were frequently absent for work, and often left me in charge to take care of my sister
and brother. From my siblings' birth in January 2006 and May 2008 respectively, I was tasked with feeding, teaching, and caring for them while my
parents were working, on top of managing my own schoolwork. However, I am fulfilled by the sense of gratitude I receive when I began caring for
those who could not care for themselves. In addition to teaching me patience, this also impels me towards a nursing career where I can fully utilize my
strengths. Furthermore, I gained exposure in healthcare through my internship at Chapa–De as a dental assistant that began in early November 2016.
By working clinically for over 12 hours a week, I gain invaluable exposure and experience by working with a variety of patients each day. The skills I
develop, such as time management, infection control, and patient comfort are beneficial tools I will wield into my nursing education and career.
Although my internship is focused on the dental aspect of healthcare, I desire to transfer my skills and experience into nursing because of the higher
variety and more holistic aspects of patient care that enthralls me and my neverending curiosity. Nonetheless, the opportunity to learn each day in this
field of healthcare is fascinating, and only further motivates me

Personal Philosophy of Nursing Essay examples
Personal Philosophy of Nursing UCF November 25, 2011 Personal Philosophy of Nursing My personal definition of nursing is taking care of my
patient as a whole; using my knowledge, being compassionate and caring, respectful and honest. Taking care of the; spiritual, physical and emotional
aspect of the patient, and taking into consideration their family and environment. Learning about the different theorists I associate myself the most with
Hildegard Peplau. Peplau believed that the relationship between the patient and the nurse was focus of attention, rather than the patient only as the unit
of attention. (Chitty & Black p.314–315). Using Peplau's theory my relationship begins with my patients as strangers and I try to...show more content...
Not being afraid to question doctors as well as the nurses about their care, asking for a 2nd opinion if they don't feel quite right about a diagnosis.
Patients should educate themselves on their disease process along with collaboration of the physicians and nurses. Patients should know why they are
on their medications, I have seen countless times were patients have no idea what their taking and why their taking their medications, their response
because the doctor said so this is not good enough. I also believe that many of our physicians and nurses have failed our patients looking at them as
just a body not an individual. We should encourage screenings, early interventions (education) to help prevent or reduce diseases. By doing these
things I think we can help to reduce patients hospitalizations, healthcare costs and risk of infections. Prolong the lives of our patients help them to live
a healthy and long life. There will be a few challenges ahead for our healthcare system and the nursing profession: 1. The Aging Population– (baby
boomers will be hitting retirement age). 2. Poverty–"the increasing numbers of disenfranchised people and pressure to limit health care expenditures
will collide to create an intense values conflict for nurses of the future". (Chitty & Black p.382) 3. Unhealthy Lifestyles– (obesity, tobacco use, lack of
exercise, stress, HIV/AIDS and drug abuse). 4. Faculty and Student shortages– making nursing shortage worse. Nurses as

Children pretend and use their imaginations to carry out their inner dreams. From playing doctor to wearing a firefighter's hat as children we
already have it set in our minds the roles we want to play in our adult lives. As a child I always had the desire to help people in need. If a friend fell
while playing tag I would stop to help, when my younger siblings would cry I would always offer my candy and a hug. I learned that helping others
made me feel good. It was something I loved. While becoming a woman I only embrace this love even more. Although I did not comprehend that these

provided both emotional and financial support to. I had to provide housing and try my hardest to teach them responsibility although I was learning
myself. This caused me to have to take on more hours at work and play a major role I was much unprepared for. Throughout life I have been so
focused on providing and supporting others that I forgot to properly care for myself. I ignored all the symptoms of my disease for years until my

Essay about The Evolution of Nursing Practice
In today's society, the medical field is constantly thriving with technological improvements and the growth of educated individuals that contribute to
the well–being of others. Nurses make up the largest majority of the industry, and with that, nursing is the fastest growing occupation. Nursing is a
job that allows people to not only take care of the sick but also to experience, learn, and further their interests of the human body. It is safe to say that
nursing of the sick existed way back into ancient times. There are many major differences, however, from nursing of today and of the past. Ancient
times revealed that nursing was not a "job" but an act of charity and so called kindness. People were not well educated and trained, and their...show

Physicians and surgeons were critical of nurses that were more interested in the spiritual needs of a patient rather than the physical (Brestovansky). This
might be because as people were dying, the Christian nurses would want to pray for their healing instead of perform surgery. It was the twentieth
century when two–thousand hospitals were put up in the United States. After the wars ended, there were few nursing jobs because of the large
number of nurses. As a result, nursing became an "honorable profession," which required college degrees. Technological advances were well thought
out and processed as nursing began to thrive. People began to study an environment in which the sick healed. Scientists and doctors developed a
routine that would help them study the human body more precisely. Both, doctors and scientists experimented with what they called the "germ
theory." The theory explained the causes of diseases, and people would then be focused on prevention methods. Nurses were the basis for teaching
the people how to stay healthy and away from infection (Moorhead). They traveled to patients' homes in order to care for them. Nurses are always in
need of, and by the mid 1950s, it was hospitals that were the largest single employer of registered nurses. Nurses may play different roles in the field,
but their responsibilities are all very similar. Nurses must be confident in everything they do and be patient with people. They should have strong

The second week of my preceptorship brought many new experiences for me, and I can honestly say that each day I spend with my preceptor is

Another important clinical competency I experienced while working with this patient was identifying the necessity of constructive feedback from my

explaining the situation I was sounding judgmental, and that I needed to disregard my personal feelings about the mom's feeding style and instead find
opportunities to advocate for the patient and educate the mom further. With advice from my instructor and the help of Kathryn we then placed a phone
call to the hospital lactation consultants and arranged a meeting for her to come and work with the mom to try and encourage breastfeeding and offer
further education about proper feeding practices for her new baby. On my second day of clinical experience this week I focused a lot on time
management and documentation for a full patient load, and also on the admission and discharge process. After taking report on all three of our patients,
I began my initial morning assessments. It was clear that our 8–year–old post–operative appendectomy was ready to be discharged. My priorities were
assessing her incision sites and ensuring the presence of bowel sounds, as well as making sure she did not have a fever and was tolerating a general

Nursing Admission Essay Sample

  • 1. Nursing Admission Essay Sample I grow both personally and professionally through my relationship with nursing. Unlike many other careers, the growth is reciprocal. Nursing gives me the freedom to venture into uncharted territory and in turn, nursing's boundaries expand. As the field of nursing develops and strengthens in new areas, unique and rewarding opportunities become available to me. While I achieve a Master's of Science in Adult Primary Care from New York University the profession of nursing will, in return, be rewarded with a valuable contributor. My nursing relationship began after a successful yet uninspired career in fashion and media production. As the first person in my family to attend college and self–fund it, I am especially proud to have graduated cum laude from the University of Texas with a BSN in December 2004. In school I maintained a 3.69 GPA in my ...show more content... Oz Show, as a guest on Good Day New York, and on ABC 7 Eyewitness News with Dr. Jay Adlersberg. Dr. Jay Adlersberg has encouraged me to draw upon my past career in modeling and on–set production to become the first nurse health correspondent. He and I agree that it makes sense for nurses to deliver health–related information in the media. The public wants information from reliable, honest and ethical sources and nursing has ranked the most honest and ethical profession in 13 out of 14 annual Gallop Poll surveys. After bolstering my education and credentials at NYU, filling the vacancy in television is something that I would consider. Teaching is one of my favorite aspects of nursing and I could reach a much broader audience using this forum. However, I want to be clear, I am not focused on self–promotion. I am interested in health promotion; health promotion through my business, my writing and the media. A graduate nursing degree from NYU combined with my business acumen and previous career experience will give me the confidence and credibility to advance in all of these Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Nurse Residency Paper The concept of nurse residency programs is not by any means a new concept. Programs have been grounded on Benner's theory of novice to expert. Benner established the notation that nurses develop skills and understanding of job skills over time through an education also with hands on experiences. She noted a nurse passes through five levels of proficiency: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert and was generally reached only after years of gaining experience as a practicing nurse. A nurse residency can facilitate new nurse graduates to transition smoothly through the levels and sometimes even more quickly. As a new graduate a nurse residency program is very appealing, not only does it help mentor you through novice period but also helps develop competent nurses for the organization....show more content... The report encouraged the assessment of NRPs' efficacy, predominantly their capability to enhance patient outcomes, nurse retention, and professional proficiency. Despite the increasing amount of research on residency program outcomes, best practices for implementation are still changing. Therefore, this paper focuses on the best practice recommendations. NRPs have made a tremendous impact on the nursing field to both novice nurses as well as the expert nurse. The main themes appearing when reviewing the literature were reports about clinical competency, preparing new graduates for interprofessional teamwork, training, orientation, and mentorship for newly graduated nurses. These topics will be discussed in this paper as they pertain to nurse residency programs and newly licensed Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Reflection On Learning Experience In Nursing Reflection is used as a tool for self–improvement by examining and interpreting. Through the learning experience, it helps guide one's self. For myself, I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect back on the last eight weeks of nursing school, I want to exam what it is like being a student, moreover what I have learned in school as well as the clinical setting. Entering into nursing school I knew ahead of time that I would be faced with challenges, consequently compelled to overcome certain adversities in order to achieve my goal. The first hardship I was faced with, was juggling a full time job, family, along with nursing school. In order for me to be successful, I realized that I needed to choose what is important; therefore, I resigned from my position as a Residential Manager of two group homes where I have worked for the past 15 years. This decision allows the opportunity to devote more time for my academics. The adjustment has been difficult as I feel a sense of loss. My identity has changed and what I have known for the last decade in a half is no longer present. Through the duration of the first semester, I can officially say that I'm pleased with the progress that I have made. NSI has not been any easy task, but my grades are steadily increasing. Nursing is a continual education, as nursing is continually changing. I have embraced different techniques learned through Kaplan to enhance my level of learning, such as time management, prioritizing as well as stress reduction. I have compiled numerous notes along with flash cards to assist with studying. The greatest effective tool I have utilized is study groups; this allowed different perspectives on the material, also granted the opportunities to fill in the gaps. As the first semester draws to a near I'm faced with what I have learned, what I will take forward into the next semester, likewise what I will leave behind. I have learned from being in the clinical setting being a nurse takes solid work, and dedication long after school ends. I will take forward different experiences that I have encountered through my clinical rotation in the long term facility, the basic skills that I have obtained in lecture as well as in the lab, along with great Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. A Career in Nursing Essay example Nursing is defined as "as an application of scientific knowledge enhanced by artful practice in a socially responsible manner." (Gregory 5). Nurses provide leadership as members of interdisciplinary teams, provide client centered care to promote health, prevent disease, and restore and maintain client integrity throughout the life span. (Krannich 71). This makes it one of the most interesting professions, in my opinion. General Qualifications for becoming a nurse, according to Regina Ranburn, include: "Compassion, caring for others, selflessness, love for humanity, and desire to help others" (1). These qualities are vital to a career in nursing because most fields require direct patient care. Dealing with patients one–on–one every day...show more content... A "cast–iron stomach" is essential because of the previous trauma situations. This is where good assessment skills are very crucial. Being in the Emergency Room, especially, the ability to access a situation and act quickly is vital to the patient's survival rate. In order to acquire a degree in nursing, the steps required are having a high school diploma and some form of formal education post high school. There are three different paths available: a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN), an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), or a hospital diploma of nursing (Krannich 72). A BSN program includes four years in college with the curriculum consisting of "assessment, disease management, decision making, health promotion and prevention, health care technology and policy, research, quality assurance, leadership, and management." (Gregory 5). You are also required to complete clinical training, meaning working in a hospital for experience in the field with real people and situations. The ADN program only requires two to three years of education (Gregory 5). However, the ADN program had the most educational opportunities, or universities offering the program. The hospital diploma career path is not offered by every hospital, but only by seventy. The ADN programs available in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Rn to Bsn Essay Competencies between BSN and ADN, RN Nurses There are numerous differences in competencies between BSN and ADN. Nursing is a dynamic profession and life long learning is essential for nurses to stay current with the increased complexity of the healthcare needs of today and into the future. In other words, the needs of our patients are changing, as we must change in order to be prepared to better serve that need. Nursing has a long history of formal education which moved out of hospitals and into colleges and universities early last century. The associate degree level of nursing was developed out of a need to produce nurses in response to a shortage during and...show more content... As cited the report When Care Becomes a Burden released by the Milbank Memorial fund in 2001, two separate studies conducted in 1996– one by the state of New York and one by the state of Texas–clearly show that significantly higher levels of medication errors and procedural violations are committed by nurses prepared at the associate degree and diploma levels as compared with baccalaureate level. ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN NURSING The ADN program require about 2 yrs for the student to complete. The Adn nurses are associate degree in nursing, ADN nurses have clinical skills and hands on basic skills but they lack both management and leadership skills with in the nursing field. Additionally they lack research skills used in nursing as well as knowledge on informatics the use of technological advances in enhancing quality medical delivery. ADN is shortened program time and reduced tuition rates. This program is more concise which focuses on the clinical skills and more tasks oriented. It lacks the theory and science behind nursing as a profession.ADN nurses are educated to provide nursing are to persons with similar alterations in structured setting.ADN degree graduates to meet the needs of the pt. • 6. How To Be A Registered Nurse Essay Associate's Degree Programs An associate's degree in nursing (ADN) includes courses in anatomy, nursing, nutrition, chemistry, microbiology among others. You'll also be required to take general liberal arts classes. Earning an ADN is the most popular option for registered nurses and opens the door to entry–level staff nurse positions which will provide you with hands–on experience in the medical field. This is the fastest path to becoming a registered nurse as most associate's degree programs last about two to three years. Bachelor's Degree Programs An aspiring RN can earn a bachelor's of science in nursing (BSN) in four years at a college or university. If you're already an RN, you can enroll in an RN–to–BSN program which is geared specifically...show more content... After completing your degree program, you'll need to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). In order to sit for the exam, you'll need to apply for a nursing license from your state board of nursing. Since each state has different eligibility criteria, check with your state board to ensure you've met the requirements in order to take the exam. The NCLEX exam covers four "categories of needs," according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing: Safe, effective care environment: Management care and safety and infection control Psychosocial integrity: Coping and adaptation and psychosocial adaptation Health promotion and maintenance: Growth and development through the life span and prevention and early detection of disease Physiology integrity: Basic care and comfort, pharmacological and parenteral therapies, reduction of risk potential and physiological adaptation NCLEX is a registered trademark and/or servicemark of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing,

  • 8. My Experiences in a Nursing Career Essay Nursing "Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, It requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painterВґs or sculptorВґs work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of GodВґs spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts." Spoken by a true nurse, Florence Nightingale; a pioneer of nursing and a reformer of hospital sanitation methods. I have many goals in life such as to have a good strong career and family. What is important to me is graduating Central high school and go on to UND. While at UND I plan to get my nursing degree and specialize in pediatrics and truama. I have...show more content... My sights have changed as I have gotten older. I no longer want to become a medical doctor. I may in the far future decide to become a doctor but I would rather be a registered nurse because they deal with the patients more. I also prefer working with pediatric or gereatric patients. Whatever way that I decide to go I will always be helping someone, somewhere. I have looked at many colleges. I find myself lucky to be in Grand Forks, North Dakota. UND is an amazing school, with a highly recommended nursing program. North Dakota is one of the only states left that require a four year nursing degree. I looked in to going to the tech but decided that it was not the right choice for me since I am planning to stay in North Dakota. This would mean I would have to work in minnesota or take a job in North Dakota and work under a different title with less pay and benefits. Another benefit that accompanies going to a four year nursing program is if i wanted to higher my education it would be in my best interest to have the extra two years behind me. My next step in becomming a registered nursing is a little sidetracked. I want to be come a CMA. A CMA is a certified medical assistant. Once I become a CMA I will have more responsibility but it will be worth it. Becomming a CMA will help me in future classes at UND. I will have the backround of medications as well as a better understanding of patients. Going to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Nursing Application Essay Examples The opportunity to challenge myself in UCLA's School of nursing, in addition to my own personal experiences and traits, supply me with a fierce determination to succeed in my academics, in my nursing career, and in fulfilling my aspirations as a whole. Foremost, I am drawn to nursing from experiencing the lack of quality healthcare available throughout society, often to the people who need it the most. Growing up in rural China, I have witnessed the negative effects of a faulty healthcare system on children, adults, and even a whole community. I find it appalling that people are suffering and dying from preventable diseases, due to a lack of access to medical facilities, or when individuals are unable to seek adequate health care because of...show more content... Coming from a family that struggles financially, my parents were frequently absent for work, and often left me in charge to take care of my sister and brother. From my siblings' birth in January 2006 and May 2008 respectively, I was tasked with feeding, teaching, and caring for them while my parents were working, on top of managing my own schoolwork. However, I am fulfilled by the sense of gratitude I receive when I began caring for those who could not care for themselves. In addition to teaching me patience, this also impels me towards a nursing career where I can fully utilize my strengths. Furthermore, I gained exposure in healthcare through my internship at Chapa–De as a dental assistant that began in early November 2016. By working clinically for over 12 hours a week, I gain invaluable exposure and experience by working with a variety of patients each day. The skills I develop, such as time management, infection control, and patient comfort are beneficial tools I will wield into my nursing education and career. Although my internship is focused on the dental aspect of healthcare, I desire to transfer my skills and experience into nursing because of the higher variety and more holistic aspects of patient care that enthralls me and my neverending curiosity. Personal Philosophy of Nursing Essay examples Personal Philosophy of Nursing UCF November 25, 2011 Personal Philosophy of Nursing My personal definition of nursing is taking care of my patient as a whole; using my knowledge, being compassionate and caring, respectful and honest. Taking care of the; spiritual, physical and emotional aspect of the patient, and taking into consideration their family and environment. Learning about the different theorists I associate myself the most with Hildegard Peplau. Peplau believed that the relationship between the patient and the nurse was focus of attention, rather than the patient only as the unit of attention. Patients should know why they are on their medications, I have seen countless times were patients have no idea what their taking and why their taking their medications, their response because the doctor said so this is not good enough. I also believe that many of our physicians and nurses have failed our patients looking at them as just a body not an individual. We should encourage screenings, early interventions (education) to help prevent or reduce diseases. By doing these things I think we can help to reduce patients hospitalizations, healthcare costs and risk of infections. Prolong the lives of our patients help them to live a healthy and long life. There will be a few challenges ahead for our healthcare system and the nursing profession: 1. The Aging Population– (baby boomers will be hitting retirement age). 2. Poverty–"the increasing numbers of disenfranchised people and pressure to limit health care expenditures will collide to create an intense values conflict for nurses of the future". (Chitty & Black p.382) 3. Unhealthy Lifestyles– (obesity, tobacco use, lack of exercise, stress, HIV/AIDS and drug abuse). 4. Faculty and Student shortages– making nursing shortage worse. From playing doctor to wearing a firefighter's hat as children we already have it set in our minds the roles we want to play in our adult lives. This caused me to have to take on more hours at work and play a major role I was much unprepared for. Nursing is a job that allows people to not only take care of the sick but also to experience, learn, and further their interests of the human body. It is safe to say that nursing of the sick existed way back into ancient times. There are many major differences, however, from nursing of today and of the past. Physicians and surgeons were critical of nurses that were more interested in the spiritual needs of a patient rather than the physical (Brestovansky). This might be because as people were dying, the Christian nurses would want to pray for their healing instead of perform surgery. It was the twentieth century when two–thousand hospitals were put up in the United States. After the wars ended, there were few nursing jobs because of the large number of nurses. As a result, nursing became an "honorable profession," which required college degrees. Technological advances were well thought out and processed as nursing began to thrive. People began to study an environment in which the sick healed. Scientists and doctors developed a routine that would help them study the human body more precisely. Both, doctors and scientists experimented with what they called the "germ theory." The theory explained the causes of diseases, and people would then be focused on prevention methods. Nurses were the basis for teaching the people how to stay healthy and away from infection (Moorhead). They traveled to patients' homes in order to care for them. Nurses are always in need of, and by the mid 1950s, it was hospitals that were the largest single employer of registered nurses. This week I focused on time management of a full patient load with continued documentation practice as well as admission and discharge procedures. I've had brief experiences in my past rotations assisting with discharge teaching and admission assessments however I have never been able to fully take charge and complete the process from start to finish, so this was a great learning opportunity for me. Another important clinical competency I experienced while working with this patient was identifying the necessity of constructive feedback from my preceptor and others. Specifically when it came to feeding practices by this patient's mother who I felt was over–feeding the baby. I realized that after explaining the situation I was sounding judgmental, and that I needed to disregard my personal feelings about the mom's feeding style and instead find opportunities to advocate for the patient and educate the mom further. With advice from my instructor and the help of Kathryn we then placed a phone call to the hospital lactation consultants and arranged a meeting for her to come and work with the mom to try and encourage breastfeeding and offer further education about proper feeding practices for her new baby. On my second day of clinical experience this week I focused a lot on time management and documentation for a full patient load, and also on the admission and discharge process. After taking report on all three of our patients, I began my initial morning assessments. It was clear that our 8–year–old post–operative appendectomy was ready to be discharged. My priorities were assessing her incision sites and ensuring the presence of bowel sounds, as well as making sure she did not have a fever and was tolerating a general diet.
