Editor's Notes
Welcome Everyone! Thank you for deciding to be a part of the Placement Skills Program. We are here to help you be successful, so do not hesitate to ask a WaveNet Center specialist any questions you have about the Placement Skills Program.
- The Placement Skills Program or “PSP” is here is help you improve your placement test scores and advance to the next level. Today we will go over a brief overview of the program and get you started with Learning Express Library or LEL.
Learning Express Library/LEL is an online resource tool available to current students of HGTC. This online library provides tools to improve in many subject areas, like Math or English. You can continue to use this resource outside of PSP to help you grow your knowledge and skills during your time at HGTC.
Once you have finished watching this presentation, a staff member will be available to assist you with your LEL account, and get you set up to complete your Initial Diagnostic Assessment also known as a Practice Test in LEL.
The Placement Skills Program was created in an effort to offer developmental studies students the opportunity to accelerate their progress toward college level courses. The program is geared towards students originally tested into these courses: MAT032 | ENG 032 | ENG 100
The PSP Sessions ARE offered FREE-of-charge. Students must attend all scheduled PSP sessions in order to be successful. It is required that students try their best to complete all sessions within a 2-3 week time period.
As an added incentive, students who come to these sessions will be able to re-take the Placement test free-of-charge. If you were not prepared for the Placement Test the first time you took it, this is your chance to have a second chance!
Instead of taking an entire semester of developmental Math/English, students attending the program will be able to omit those developmental courses and skip right to credit level courses! This could save you time and tuition costs.
The Placement Skills Program will help you identify your areas of weakness and assist you in working to improve those areas. If you are a student that has not taken a Math or English course in a while and need to refresh your knowledge, this is a great opportunity for you! We have experienced tutors/coaches working in our Placement Skills Program and are ready to help you improve! It is the students responsibility and commitment that will depend on the improvement of scores. It is very important to know that increased scores are not a guarantee if you do not put in the time and effort.
Next we will discuss the steps needed to complete the program. You have almost completed the first two steps! Lets review what you will need to entirely complete the Placement Skills Program. After this video today, you will complete your Initial Assessment Test in Learning Express Library. The Initial Assessment will pinpoint your areas of strength and your areas of weakness. Once you have completed your Initial Assessment, a WNC staff member will review your scores and register you for your PSP Sessions. After this - you are finished with Steps 1 & 2.
Step 3: Attend all PSP Sessions in the Student Success and Tutoring Center (SSTC). There is a minimum of 3 sessions required for each subject area. Conway WNC has additional coaches available if needed. Once you have attended all of your required sessions, you will speak with a PSP coach or WNC staff to discuss if you are ready to move to the next step (4).
Step 4: In WNC- once you are confident with the material you have used, you will complete your Final Assessment in LEL. Meet with WNC staff to evaluate whether you have improved enough before you go on the re-take the official Placement Test in the Testing Center.
Step 5: In WNC, after completing the final assessment, complete the PSP survey and schedule your retake test for the Testing Center - WNC staff will be available to help you create this appointment. OR if needed, WNC staff can assist you in scheduling additional coaching sessions to continue to work on improving your skills.
Step 6: Your last step will be to re-take your official Placement Test in the Testing Center. After you have re-tested, it is very important to continue with the registration process! This includes, meeting with your advisor, and then, registering for classes, and following through with your Financial Aid/Payment Plan. Come back to WNC for assistance in wrapping up those final steps in the enrollment process.
