  • Hello and Welcome to Word! This is your first eLecture. I hope you like it. You may ask why not use videos. Well they are a pain and a lot of work. In order to be compliance, we have to make them ADA compliance and then make them so they will work in Blackboard without taking space! (Videos and sound take space). I am using PowerPoint 2007 (on Windows) and 2008 (on Macintosh) and make my presentations and notes. I then use LecShare (http://www.lecshare.com) and produce online materials with my presentation and notes. I hope you like it and much as I like using both. I love PowerPoint and YES…I LOVE Macintosh! Anyway, welcome. Let’s get started.

What is Distance Education? <ul><li>Distance Education (DE) is a means of learning online or away, off campus. </li></ul><ul><li>OCC has a variety of courses online </li></ul><ul><li>OCC’s primary and only supported system is Blackboard </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Very easy to use and user-friendly </li></ul></ul><ul><li>It may or may not be for you… </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Only way to find out is to try it a few times </li></ul></ul>

Setting Up Your Computer for DE <ul><li>Since we use Backboard, your computer needs to be set up properly to connect and use our system </li></ul><ul><li>The most important items are: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Disable ALL block stoppers – including those in the tool bars </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>i.e., Yahoo, MSN, AOL toolbars </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Lower or disable firewall security software </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>If you are on a network at home, your router has firewall….you do NOT need the firewall software on your computer at all </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Enable Java – Blackboard is Java driven </li></ul></ul>

Tech Support <ul><li>Even though you can ask your colleagues for help as well as me, you do have 24-hours Tech Support available. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Remember that tech support is only for technical issues </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Anything to do with contents, assignments or grades are not handled by Technical Support…those you go to your faculty </li></ul></ul>

The course in a nutshell <ul><li>In this course you will learn what is Word and how to present with this program. </li></ul><ul><li>Course Description </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Designed to improve document processing skills using Microsoft Word. Topics cover preparing documents, formatting and managing documents, and enhancing documents. Prepares students with the skills required to pass the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification exam. This course may also be offered online. May be taken for grades or on a pass-no pass basis. ADVISORY: Computer Information Systems A090 or keyboarding speed of at least 30 wpm. Transfer Credit: CSU. </li></ul></ul>
