This document discusses road arboriculture, which is the growing of trees along roadsides. It outlines the objectives of road arboriculture such as providing an attractive landscape, shade, and reducing noise and glare. Patterns of tree planting involve spacing trees at least 12 meters from the road center. Trees must be cared for through protection, watering, soil maintenance, and protection from frost. Roadside trees can help preserve the environment if properly selected and maintained.
4. Road Arboriculture
Growing of trees along road side is called road arboriculture.
Trees can be grown on both urban as well as rural roads. The trees should
be planted at least 12 m way from the centre line of the carriage way.
The basic aim of planting the tree away from the centre line is to maintain
clearance at least equal to carriage way width at the level of crown of
trees.

5. Objectives of Road Arboriculture
5
The trees are grown on road side to serve the
following objectives.
• To provide attractive landscape of road side.
• To provide shape and comfort to road users and
make journey more comfortable.
6. To prevent soil erosion from the roadside.
To reduce headlight glare during night driving by the
planted shrubs.
To intercept the annoying sound waves and fumes from
road vehicles by the planted trees.
It provides shed to the road user. 6
7. Patterns of Tree Planting
7
Trees are generally grown along both sides of the
road. As already stated that, the spacing of the
trees rows the centre line of carriage way should be
at least 12 m, in case trees of wide crown type.
8. Care of Trees
Protection of Trees:
After planting the trees have to be looked after from
the attack of stray animals. Following measures can
be adopted for the protection of trees.

9. Iron guards : Iron enclosure are made around the trees to protect
them.
Bitumen drum guards : P.W.D. has lot of used bitumen drums in its
possession.
Barbed wire fencing: In this system four wooden bullies are driven at
four corners around the tree pit an bardbed wire wrapped around
them.
9
10. Maintenance of Trees:
Watering : Watering is an essential feature of tree maintenance. Method
of watering and interval of watering depends on type of tree, the land,
climatic conditions, water availability etc.
Hoeing : Soil around the tree stem should be kept loose. This helps in fast
growth of the tree.

Protection from frost: Plants which are likely to be affected by cold
should be provided protection by coveringthem by thatching.
Keeping trees straight: if plants get inclined they should be given
support with the help of bullies against the slope. This helps keep
the trees up right.

Conclusion:
The roadside trees are a cheaper and positive way to preserve
and improve environment. There were the Social Forestry
programmers, which yielded results, but failed due to the lack of
follow up actions and also in wrong selection of the tress which
were not natural to our country. The same programmes should
be reimplemented by removing the errors.
