2. Insomnia • A condition of unsatisfactory
quantity and or quality of sleep,
which persists for a considerable
period of time, including difficulty
in falling asleep, difficulty staying
asleep or early final wakening.
• Insomnia is a common symptom
of many mental and physical
disorders.

3. Criteria for
Insomnia
• A.The Individual
complains of difficulty
falling asleep
• Difficulty maintaining
sleep
• Non-refreshing sleep.

4. Time •B.The sleep
disturbance occurs at
least three times a
week for at least one
month.

5. Personal
Distress
• C.The sleep disturbance
results in marked
personal distress or
interferences with
personal functioning in
daily living.

6. No organic
cause
• There is no known causative organic factor,
such as
• Neurological or
• Other medical condition
• Psychoactive substance use disorder or a
medication.
• Examples include tea, coffee, coke, cannabis,
alcohol, fizzy drinks especially in the evening.
• Sleep apnoea, obesity, night shift working.
