The process of separating suspended solid matter from a liquid suspension is
known as filtration.
It is passed through a porous medium that accumulate the solids, but allows
the passage of fluids.
The porous medium used to filter the solution is known as filter medium.
Equipments used for filtration are,
Pressure filter, Vacuum filter, Rotary Drum filter, Cartridge filter, Membrane
filter and Seitz filter

available which provides large surface area.

It is an apparatus consisting of a longitudinal drainage screen
covered with a filter cloth.
It is based on a surface filtration mechanism.
It acts as a sieve or strainer.
Vacuum or pressure can be applied to increase the rate of
filtration.
6. CONSTRUCTION
The filter leaf consists of a frame enclosing a
drainage screen or grooved plate.
The frame may be of any shape; circular, square or
rectangular.
The entire unit is covered with filter cloth.
The filtrate outlet is connected to the frame
through suction.

Cake can be easily dislodged and washed.
DISADVANTAGES
The maximum concentration of slurry that can be filtered is only 5%w/v.
10. USES
Leaf filters are suitable for handling flammable, toxic and corrosive materials, as
they are autoclaved and designed for hazardous environments when high
pressure and safe operations are required.
It is satisfactory if the solid content of the slurry is not too high.
