2. PRINCIPLE
 METAFILTER functions as strainer (surface filtration) for the separation of
particles.
 In this method, metal rings contain semicircular projections, which are
arranged as a nest to form channels on the edges.

3. CONSTRUCTION
 Construction and assembly of meta filter is shown in the figure.

4.  Metafilter consist of a series of metal rings.
 These are threaded so that a channel is formed on the edges.
 It consists a grooved drainage column on which a series of metal rings are
packed.
 These rings are usually made of stainless steel have dimensions of about
15.0 mm internal diameter and 22.0 mm external diameter.
 Each metal rings has a number of semi circular projection (0.8mm in
thickness) on one side of surface.
 The projections are arranged the same way up.
 These rings tightened on the drainage column with a nut.
 Metafilers are also known as EDGE FILTERS.

5. Working
 These filters placed in a vessel and may be operated by pumping the slurry
under pressure or occasionally by application of reduced pressure to the
outlet side.
 The slurry passes through the channels formed on the edges between the
rings.
 The clear liquid rises up and collected from outlet into the receiver.
 For the separation of fine particles, a bed of suitable material such as
kieselguhr is first built up.
 The pack of rings serves essentially as a base on which the true filter medium
is supported.

6. UseS
 For clarification of syrups.
 Filteration of injection solutions.
 Clarification of insulin liquors

7. Advantages
 Can be used under high pressure , without any danger of bursting the filter
medium.
 Running costs are low.
 It can be made up of material resistant to corrosion to avoid contamination of
preparations.
 It an extremely versatile filter.
 Sterile products can be handled.
