insects.

The word pest is derived from French ‘Peste’ and latin terms
‘pestis’ means plague or contagious disease
• Pest is an any organism whose population increases to such an
extent as to cause economic loss to crops or a nuisance and health
hazards to man and his live stock
• A pest is any animal or plant which has a harmful effect on
humans, their food or their living conditions
5. WHY INSECTS ARE CALLED PESTS?
Insects are called pests when their population increases to such
an extent as to cause economic loss to crops or a nuisance and
health hazards to man and his live stock
When the population of the insects reaches the EIL level, called
pests.
6. Another of the basic elements, the economic injury level, is
defined as the point at which a pest population begins to
cause economic damage.
The point that induced control measures must be applies to
prevent the pest from reaching the economic injury level is
called the economic threshold or action level.
