Ben-Ami, PhD, enjoys watching movies directed by
Steven Spielberg.
A three-time Oscar winner, Spielberg most recently
directed the 2018 film Ready Player One. For his next
film, Spielberg is turning to the stage as he is set to
direct the film adaptation of West Side Story, the popular
Broadway musical that depicts the timeless love story of
Romeo and Juliet in 1950s New York. Tony, serving as
the Romeo archetype, is a member of the Jets gang who
falls for Maria, the sister of the leader of a rival gang.
The musical debuted on Broadway in 1957 and was first
adapted for film in 1961. Jerome Robbins and Robert
Wise directed the film and it won 10 Academy Awards.
3. STEVEN SPIELBERG
The script for the new film was adapted by Tony
Kushner, who previously worked with Spielberg on the
2012 film, Lincoln. Production is expected to begin this
year and the cast has already been announced. Ansel
Elgort will play Tony, while Rachel Zegler will make her
film debut in the female lead role of Maria.
Other cast members include David Alvarez, Ariana
DeBose, and Rita Moreno, who played the role of Anita in
the original 1961 film; she will play a new character,
Valentina, and serve as an executive producer.
